TL;DR
Primer and Adhesion
A crucial step in applying glitter eyeshadow is using a glitter-specific primer. Many users recommend the NYX Glitter Glue as it helps the glitter adhere better and stay put throughout the day [1:1],
[2:1]. Applying this primer over your regular eyeshadow base can enhance the intensity and longevity of the glitter
[2:1].
Application Techniques
For applying glitter eyeshadow, patting rather than swiping is recommended to achieve a concentrated look [3:1],
[3:7]. While fingers can be used, some find them awkward for precision. Brushes like concealer brushes or silicone packing brushes can offer more control
[3:2],
[3:4]. Additionally, dampening brushes with water or fixing spray can improve color payoff
[3:3].
Managing Fallout
Glitter fallout can be managed by applying eye makeup before foundation, allowing you to clean up any mess without ruining your base [4:2]. Holding a tissue under your eye during application or using a post-it note to pick up stray glitter are practical tips shared by users
[4:1],
[4:5]. Baking your face with loose powder while doing your eyes can also catch fallout effectively
[4:4].
Blending and Tools
Proper blending tools can make a significant difference in your glitter eyeshadow application. Investing in quality brushes, even if they aren't the most expensive, can help improve blending [5:6]. Real Technique brushes are mentioned as a good option for those looking to upgrade from basic brushes
[5:8]. Practice and experimenting with different looks will gradually enhance your skills
[5:9].
I would add a base of neutral brown and use glitter glue for the eyeshadow it helps chunky glitter stay all day.
Appreciate your advice. I'll try them all

Are you using any kind of primer?
I do I use cryolin, but it just seems to not cover my face because i have red marks in my face🙈
A glitter specific eye primer will help wonders! The NYX one and j.cat one are the most accessible ones I've found
So I recently got a new eyeshadow palette, it’s not the highest quality palette and sometimes the colors are a bit sheer but other than that it’s beautiful. I also have a primer coming in tomorrow that should help make it less sheer
A problem I’m having now is that when I try to apply the glitter eyeshadow it’s the type that is bit looser, not to the point of fall out, but I can’t get it off my finger for the life of me
I do normally use my finger for glitter eyeshadow, but since I’m having so much trouble should I try and use a brush? If so, what type of brush? How can I apply the glitter eyeshadow better?
Nyx glitter glue
Seconding the nyx glitter glue! It’s amazing
Try patting with your finger rather than swiping the glitter ahadow
I do have a little primer on my finger, then on the glitter, and on my eye 👁️
Yes nyx glitter glue
NYX glitter glue is the best. Apply it on top of your normal eyeshadow primer, then glitter on top. If you want a really bold glitter, use a flat packing brush (this is my favorite). Swipe it firmly in your pan and then you can brush or pat it into your eyelid (before the glitter glue can dry) till you get the desired intensity.
I started using a concealer brush to apply my eyeshadow primer instead of my fingers. Then when I’m ready for shimmer/glitter, I take the primer brush and dab on some more primer where I want the shimmer. This makes it a bit tacky so the shimmer sticks. Then I take a clean concealer brush, a nice small one, to apply the shimmer. Works great for me.
Also agree with dabbing/patting instead of swiping
try dampening your brush with water/fixing spray mist to improve payoff, or using a glitter glue or eye primer!
alternatively, use a sponge tip applicator to apply!
most kbeauty brands like clio usually intend their shimmers to be sheer toppers, so you can't always expect a lot of coverage/intensity from them... but they're usually very sparkly and ethereal tapped on sheerly~
These and super helpful tips, thank you so much!
I have a silicone packing brush that’s good for a similar application to a finger but more precision. I can’t remember exactly where I got mine (Revolution maybe?) but it’s similar to the Morphe M760
Thanks so much, I'll have try that type of brush out sounds like it would work well
Those plastic handle sponge tip things that used to come with eyeshadow? Are amazing. We threw them all out when the Youtube makeup revolution started and we all became artistes with our brushes lol. Basically any shadow that says to apply with a finger, I use these instead.
Anyone who’s been frustrated by weird formulas like the Selena Gomez eyeshadows - these spongey things are PERFECT for those.
those sponges are actually so useful for a ton of things! i use them for chrome nail art! def dont throw them out lol!
Thank you so much, I bet they would be perfect for this kind of thing you're so right!
Pat it on instead of brushing it. No strokes, just pat it with some soft pats. Works much better for glitter eyeshadows.
Thank you for the tip, I'll give it a try :)
I’m still not use to doing my eyes before my foundation. Eyeshadow fall-out was an annoying problem, especially if it had glitter. I started using a Post-it to remove the glitter. It is just sticky enough to pick up the eyeshadow but not sticky enough to mess up my foundation. Total WIN!!
I do it first before my face. I use a tissue held under my eye especially if I’m working with a very dark shadow or something really sparkly it helps with the fall out.
Honestly nothing has worked better for me that just doing it first even though it looks crazy until I do the rest of me face. That and tapping off the excess is actually a big lifesaver too
Recently I started baking my face while I do my eyes. The loose powder "catches" the fallout and most of it gets swept away with the powder when I'm done. I still prefer to do my eyes first so that I can sharpen the outer corners with a makeup wipe, but when I do my face first that works pretty well.
I'll try your method next!
Never thought to use a post-it note! Thanks for the tip
I just hold a tissue under my eyes while I apply the shadow. The glitter falls onto the tissue and I toss it after.
I just wanted to say that I love seeing your updates and seeing what look you did that day and what colors you chose! It really makes me happy to see everyday and I really look forward to seeing your posts :)
Thank you. I like trying out different looks.
Do you use an eye shadow primer before you put on your makeup? I got a little mini urban decay primer for my eyes and it lasted for AGES and made blending a lot easier
No I don't use an eyeshadow primer, but I might get one in the future.
Those colors look really good together! I think darkening your brows would help pull it together more. All I do is swipe some brown shadow over mine. It makes them look thicker. Remember practice makes perfect, and your doing a great job!
I’ve always struggled with blending until I bought my first proper few brushes. They weren’t the most expensive versions, because I’m still very much a novice, but they were a little nicer than the cheapest ones I could find. I’d suggest buying one brush for application and another fluffier one for blending.
Every time I see you post a new look I see improvement, and I’m glad you’re enjoying trying new colors and styles.
xx
Agree! Your blending is improving OP, and I love how you choose bold bright colors!
At the moment I am using brushes I got from Wish and a couple of Eco Tools eye brushes that I got from Amazon. I might get some Real Technique brushes in the future. People on here have said they are good. Thank you for your comments.
The colors you've picked are very pretty together!
Hello,
So I ordered Tiara Song on Amazon as no store near me had her in stock, and they had her at the lowest price point.I know it is a risk with the quality control.(I bought Maria Garcia on there and she came with a smudged cheek that I ended up giving to my sister as she collects them too and didn't mind the spot.I asked for advice on here ,on how to fix her but didn't feel confident enough to attempt it)So---Tiara is beautifully painted, clothes looks good(she's still in box) but she is missing glitter on her eyeshadow. There is a FAINT line on her left eye in the lighter purple eyeshadow area and none on the right.
My mother has Minnie and she has glitter at her inner corners and near her eyebrows. Is Tiara only supposed to have it right above her eye,and also how would I go about applying it? ModPodge?
Sorry for the ramble..any advice would be appreciated.Thank you so much and Happy Mother's day to all the Moms out there..(pet & doll Moms included!)

I've added and touched up the glitter on multiple dolls of mine using folkart's dragonfly glaze acrylic paint. The decoart enchanted shimmer acrylic paint is also good but it is more metallic than glittery.
Most people I've seen do it say they use glitter nail polish. I'd add a bit of varnish first as base layer to protect the vinyl from the nail polish just in case it could react badly. You could probably also use varnish with nail art glitter though!
I added gold glitter to my Daphne with gold glitter nail polish! I hope someone else can approve, or shoot me, for that suggestion 😂 That was months ago, and it literally looks the exact same as the factory glitter, it even chips the same.
Oh hello there! I thought of trying nail polish, but it also gave me anxiety.Daphne is so pretty,my older sister has her!
I'd love it if my family were into dolls! They're only into cars and military stuff 😭😁
I have always added glitter by mixing it with a gloss varnish. Not always my favorite addition but I've found Deco Art's Duraclear Gloss Varnish mixed with like a drop of water will keep the glitter sparkly without adding too much sheen difference to the rest of the face. Also works with pigments for shimmery eyeshadows.
Like wetting an eyeliner brush to dip in an eyeshadow & using some as eyeliner? I recently ran out of my gold eye liner but have so much gold shadow, I was wondering if anyone has done that or has any tips!! Thanks :)
I love using simmer eyeshadow as eyeliner using a wet brush. One thing I have learnt the hard way is to make sure you don’t overpack your eyeliner brush when doing this. Once, I finished my base before doing my eyeliner and I had my brush drop piles of black eyeshadow onto my cheeks. There was no fixing it beyond removing my entire look.
I do this everyday. Its my one “signature” step.I use my dark brown eyeshadow and eyeliners with a angled liner brush. It doesn’t really smudge on me or fade much. And I’ve been doing this for about 2-3 years at this point.
Perfect thank you so much!! I didn’t wanna buy a whole new gold liner. I actually just tested it out with my gold shadow & it actually looked so much better than the liner!
Great when you want to smudge it up for a grunge look.
I did this for years, back (edit for typo) when I regularly wore eyeliner. I used makeup setting spray to "mix" some shadow on the back of my hand, applied it with a small angle brush; it worked pretty well. My eyeliner look was very simple, though (no wings or anything like that).
Yeah I don’t usually do wings or anything but I love colored liners!!! Thank you I’m gonna test this out :)
I do it all the time. I wet my liner brush and drag it across my eyeshadow.
Perfect thank you!!
I'm pretty new to makeup too. I find my looks turn out best when I use the least amount of product possible and build it up as needed. I also blend after each application instead of just at the end.
I try blending and have even bought different brushes bc I thought I just had bad brushes but it seems like I just can’t pull it off HAHA
Do you use a lid primer? I don't find much difference when I do, though some friends wouldn't apply shadow without it. I think it might depend on skin type, shadow type, etc.
When I first started out I tried following YouTube tutorials where the looks would involve about five mattes and three shimmers and I just wasn't at that level yet. I managed to make my eyeshadow look good when I would just use two mattes in the crease and one shimmer, using a small amount at a time and building it up. My first palette was actually the sweet peach palette (if that's the one you mean) so I would suggest priming, setting the primer with white peach, blending some of the mattes in the crease and then highlighting the inner corner, maybe with nectar. Really simple but you can always make it more complex as time goes on :)
I would say start small and work your way up. Trios or quads are best (or using only 3-4 colors). I prime then add a mid tone color to my crease (aka the transition color) to allow the other colors to blend in. Use a small amount of darker shadow on my outer crease area just to add some depth and I add a lighter brighter shimmer or metallic color to my inner 1/3-2/3 of my lid. Make sure the colors all work together and I top off my brow bone directly under the high point of my arch of my brow and dot some in my inner corner normally of a shimmer or highlight color 99% of the time the same I use on my cheeks :)
only place it where you need it and blend! also build the color up by shades, if you want a red eye shadow look, start with a light pink ane go down the line. sometimes its not the palettes qualities but the brushes! target has some good cheaper brands like real technique that have packs :) practice makes perfect
Use a primer and B L E N D. Make sure you have a clean brush on hand just for blending stuff out without spreading excess pigment where it doesn’t belong
Thank you!!
As someone who is still fairly new to makeup, I got confused at first and thought you were supposed to smear red all over your eyelid...
And then I wondered where it all went in the second step! Can't blend it out that much.
That’s why I made my comment above. And got downvoted to hell. Haha cray
Omg same
With my deeply hooded eye lids and straight downward sloped brows, all you'd see is the first color anyway.
They make it look so easy :/
If you use TikTok, there’s a creator I started following recently called yashface2310, and she does some awesome hooded eye makeup tutorials if you’re interested. It changed my makeup game.
Same :(
I have a question,
so is the first top shows in red where to put the shadow and the bottom image shows what it looks like? yes?
does that mean images 2,3,4 are steps to achieve one final look or are there four different independent looks?
I believe so! It took me a second to learn to read it as well. On the bottom row with the pallets it also shows which is the correct color by outlining it in red too.
One look
I have no idea what this means.
The shadow you are supposed to use for each step is highlighted by a red box. The top images are just showing where you apply the shadow (the red parts), and the ones under those show what it should look like. It took me a moment to figure it out lol
Hope that helps :)
So I consider myself ok at applying makeup. I could do better with contouring, but overall makeup tends to make me look better not worse. However, whenever I wear eye makeup I always look worse. I can't even do two shadows because it turns out all muddy, and even one color tends to make my eye look smaller not bigger and I can never figure out where to stop putting eyeshadow (how far and high do I go??). I watch youtube videos and I swear I feel like the person just magically applies it to the right place; when I try doing the EXACT same thing it turns out looking horrible. Does anyone have any tips? I have been playing around with eyshadow for years and I can never get it right.

Edit: I don't have a pic on hand but people say my eyes look like hers (and skin tone) for reference: https://famousbio.net/data/uploads/peoples/38/MzI5Mzg-rebecca-black-2.jpg
>and even one color tends to make my eye look smaller
Don't put anything under your eye if you're having this issue. Also, some of us really can't wear eyeliner very well.
>whenever I wear eye makeup I always look worse.
It's possible that you're using the wrong pallette for your skin tone. Most eyeshadows out there are warm, because that's what the current style is. If you are cool toned, you're going to have a harder time finding the right shades.
In the future, post a picture of your face, and maybe some of us can spot what your problem is. It might be your eye shape. If you're bashful, crop a photo to just show the upper right quadrant of your face... like if you drew lines straight up and sideways from the tip of your nose.
>I watch youtube videos and I swear I feel like the person just magically applies it to the right place; when I try doing the EXACT same thing it turns out looking horrible.
Don't compare your work to someone who makes those videos as their job. Many have admitted that they'll sometimes spend a half hour or more getting the blend right on just one eye... but they're obviously not going to show that long ass struggle in the video.
Same here. I LOVE eyeshadow and have a collection of palettes but can't figure out how to apply it right. The tutorials never help me either. I have hooded eyes and that doesn't help me much.
Try the tape method. Put on tape on the corner of your lids to help guide you make the corner of your shadow sharp.
Put on an eye primer. Wet n wild makes a great one. Works great for hooded eyes.
Pat on eyeshadows using a sponge tip applicator. Dont rub, just pat.
Kinkysweat just uploaded a live yesterday on how to use eyeshadow on hooded eyes! She's great
I have hooded eyes and I now basically always use the same method: Darker matte shadow on outer 1/3 of lid and then blended into the outer crease, light matte or shimmer shadow on inner 1/3 of lid, any shadow on the remaining 1/3 in the centre and sort of blend out either side into the other two colours.
This is about the maximum effort that's worth putting into hooded eye makeup as there's no point using 8 shadows when no one will see them lol.
I have hooded eyes too and its a bit simple but what works for me is putting a a darker shade above the “crease” (the line that sucks in your whole eyelid like a black hole xD). Then i put a much lighter shade below the crease on the lid and it makes it pop out more since usually anything i put there disappears. Put the lighter shade just a bit above the actual line too to make it not completely disappear and give a little “fake crease”. I never use eyeliner anymore since it covers everything up and it looks fine without it. If i feel like it sometimes I’ll take an angled brush and taper the shadow out into a wing but its kinda hard lol
((I also start with a shade that matches my skin tone and cover my whole eye area with it since my eyes have some weird discoloration so idk if itd be necessary for you))
Idk if that helped but i tried
Watch Alyssa, she's got hooded eyes but she manages to create beautiful looks, you just have to find the right technique to make it work
I'll try to figure out your tips on my eyelids I agree that eyeliner is pointless. My lids are so hooded that all you end up seeing is eyeliner
I highly recommend The Makeup Chair on YouTube.
She has great tutorials for beginners and explains different eye shapes and positioning of eyeshadow.
Do you have hooded eyelids?
edit: Asking because I’ve been in your exact place and it took me AGES to figure out that I was watching makeup artists that didn’t have the same type of eyes as myself!
Me too except mine aren’t hooded, but very deep set. I only recently learned how to apply eyeshadow that didn’t make me look like I’d been punched!
With eyeshadow I think the right brush is key. Before I would blend and blend and blend but the shadow would still look like a block of colour, then I got a big fluffy brush and it’s completely changed everything!
How to use glitter eyeshadow
Here are some key considerations for using glitter eyeshadow effectively:
Prep Your Eyelids:
Choose the Right Tools:
Layering Technique:
Application Method:
Minimize Fallout:
Setting the Look:
Recommendation: For a more dramatic effect, consider using a glitter glue or adhesive specifically designed for eyeshadow. This will help the glitter stay in place longer and prevent it from creasing or fading. Always remember to remove glitter eyeshadow gently at the end of the day to avoid irritation.
