TL;DR
Denture Cleaning Tablets
Denture cleaning tablets are highly recommended for removing odors from water bottles. They are easy to use: simply fill the bottle with water, drop in the tablets, and let them sit for a few hours [1:1]
[2:2]
[3:5]. This method is praised for its effectiveness on both plastic and metal bottles, and it can be repeated as needed
[5:1].
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Another popular method involves using baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda is known for its smell-absorbing properties and can be used to scrub the bottle [1:3]
[4:3]. Combining vinegar with baking soda and letting the mixture soak in the bottle can help neutralize odors
[2:1]. Despite concerns about vinegar leaving its own scent, many users prefer it over bleach
[1:7]
[1:8].
Metal vs. Plastic Bottles
Plastic bottles are more prone to retaining odors due to their porous nature [1:2]
[1:11]. If your bottle is plastic and continues to smell after cleaning, consider switching to a glass or metal bottle, which are less likely to harbor bacteria and odors
[1:6]
[5:2]. Metal bottles are generally recommended for their durability and ease of cleaning
[1:12].
Additional Methods
Other methods mentioned include using activated charcoal, vanilla essence, and hydrogen peroxide. Activated charcoal can absorb odors when placed inside the bottle [4:2], while vanilla essence can mask unpleasant smells
[4:4]. Hydrogen peroxide is suggested for thorough cleaning and deodorizing
[5:3].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
If persistent odors remain despite multiple cleaning attempts, it may be worth considering whether the bottle has developed mold or bacteria that cannot be removed. In such cases, replacing the bottle might be the safest option [4:5]
[4:6].
I left my water bottle closed at home while I went on a week vacation. I’ve washed it 3 times with burning hot water and plenty of soap but it still smells. It doesn’t taste bad it’s just unpleasant to smell that while I’m drinking.
Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. This got a lot more responses than I expected and I’m far too lazy to reply to everyone individually.
What is the bottle made of? If it’s plastic, get rid of it — the material is porous and that smell and the bacteria that go along with it aren’t leaving. Replace it with something not made of plastic.
If it’s glass or metal, use a solutions of water with a little bleach and soak it over night, then rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
Don’t forget to soak the lid too. I’ve found it’s often my lids that trap the smell more than the bottle itself, depending on the kind of bottle.
Metal water bottles are better?
They are less porous, as in, they don't have as many or as large of the microscopic holes that bacteria camp out in. Plus they don't melt in the dish washer.
Think a magic eraser compared to a kitchen sponge, that's roughly the difference at the microscopic level between metal and plastic.
Depends on the metal they are made of
Bicarb soda/baking soda is known for its smell-absorbing powers, and it's gentler than bleach. Make a paste out of it and brush the bottle lip and lid.
No bleach, use vinegar.
Agreed! Just put vinegar in the bottle and let it sit for a few hours; should get rid of that smell. I use it on my musty Tupperwares and it works like a charm
Wouldn’t it smell like vinegar then?
Vinegar smell > bleach smell ? C'mon man...
I second the no bleach, use vinegar suggestion.
Denture cleaning tablets are awesome. Fill bottle with water, pop in two dissolvable tablets, let sit for a few hours.
My metallic water bottle smells weird, i have only had it for two weeks.
give it a soak with some denture tablets
Good old fashioned dawn dishoap let it soak for a while and then rinse out violently
vinegar and baking soda let it soak in there throw water in there shake it up
Normally at home I would clean my water bottle periodically by running it through the dishwasher or using a bottle scrub brush to get inside. I don't really want to pack a scrub brush.
Would you bring iodine or chlorine? Is there some other hack?
Try denture tablets. Consider flavourless tablets if you have a plastic bottle in case the flavour sticks
Bottle Bright cleaning tablets. You can get them on Amazon.
I've heard you can use denture tablets too and they're cheaper?
I use denture tablets every now and again on my waterbottle, and more frequently on my travelmug (tea and coffee).
I just toss a little baking soda in mine, shake it like I’m mixing a bad cocktail, then rinse. Once on a camping trip I forgot the soda and used toothpaste instead—minty fresh but my water tasted like Colgate for two days.
I use denture tabs for this. Same thing.
Few people here seem to like my method, but I'm gonna keep sharing it in the hopes that it helps someone else pack less someday.
Nothing could be simpler.
This has several advantages.
Honestly your method is my preference, but unfortunately I'm not able to on this trip.
I'll be traveling to a couple of places that don't allow single-use plastic water bottles: Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos (I'm pretty sure the Galapagos has this rule anyways, not 100% sure though).
Interesting, I had not considered them.
Thanks!
I'd go for a wide mouth bottle, with a narrow cap.
For example:
Wide so you can put drinkmix in it, or clean it easier. Narrow cap so you dont dump it on yourself trying to take a sip on the bus.
Yeah, this is all I've ever done. Clearly people love their water bottles though haha
Do you already carry chopsticks? I’ve used mine with a cloth to get the corners, when washing in a hotel room.
Chopsticks are great for eating salad! No more chasing the last, slippery leaf around your plate! And you can clean your water bottle.
So I have a plastic water bottle I use regulary.
A few weeks ago, I tried making a iced tea with a teabag specifically designed to make iced tea. It's 'special' ingredient was blackberry leaves which made it taste sweet without sugar.
Since then, the taste hasn't gone. I've tried washing with hot, soapy water, leaving it with hot water and lemon overnight and aired it out with the lid off as well.
Any tips on how to get rid of it?
Activaved charcoal. Just put inside the bottle and let it happen. The smell will go away
Put two tablespoons of baking soda in the bottle and fill it up with water. Let it soak for a few hours, then scrub it with more baking soda and water. If it still stinks after that, throw it out.
Get really cheap vanilla essence. Add a few tablespoons, swirl it around. Make sure you coat the whole inside of the bottle.
A friend worked at a fishmongers and this is what they used to do to get rid of smells
Throw it away, probably molded/bacteria inside that you won't be able to get out.
The thing is, it tastes and smells of the ice tea, so I don't know if it could be mould or just the essence of that iced tea has attached itself to that plastic like crazy
Honestly, to be safe, throw it away...that's my advice to you. Bottles aren't that expensive...you can always replace it.
Vinegar helps too. I use it in my water bottles to wash them before I go on long excursions in the woods. Hit it with hot water and soap then after your done fill the sucker up with vinegar and let it set for 24 hours. Dump it. Rinse. Then let it sit out and air dry. It worked for me, both stainless steel and plastic bottles. Good luck!
I have a glass water bottle that I carry with me to school. I've used it before taking it to school as well, and it was alright every time i drank from it, which was everyday. I filled the water bottle with water from the cooler ONCE, and since then, after a few minutes, the bottle would start smelling funky, like a sweet but disgusting scent. I thought it was the cooler water being weird, so i washed the bottle when I got home, and every time I filled it up since then, it has had the same problem. What's weird is, I cleaned it today, didn't use it, and after a few hours, the smell is back, but it went away originally after washing. Does anyone know what may have caused that? and can I do anything to prevent it?
Is the smell actually coming from the lid? Sometimes grime gets caught in the rubber or silicone seal.
Open it up, put some hydrogen peroxide inside, swish it around for maybe 30 seconds and squirt it through the top, then rinse it thoroughly. Takes away all the fun and makes it smell like new.
I don't know what causes it but I use denture tablets on mine -- fill it up with hot water and drop 1 tablet in for every 8 oz of water it holds.
you know the one. i have a thermally insulating metallic bottle if that makes a difference. i soaked it in dawn for two days but no avail. i need water during class pls help :(
Baking soda will remove coffee and other stains and odors. Sprinkle a bunch inside the bottle and scrub with a bottle brush or damp rag, then wash as usual.
This is probably just a temporary fix but when i chew gum and drink water it leaves my water bottle smelling like mint for a while after. Haven’t done any tests to determine how long exactly but you know
im just looking for a pure crisp water taste. lightly flavored water tastes bad to me
I put coffee in mine like a dingus and it tasted terrible. What you can do is add some white vinegar and some hot water, then just let it sit for like 30 mins. It removed the taste completely and now I can happily gulp my water again.
HOT water, shake a lot, repeat a few times
Works for me
I have the same problem, and I think you are probably just shit out of luck sadly.

I just searched this up and found these methods. I Will try the vinegar one.
Hey yall, I love my hydroflask, covered in stickers and everything, and I will admit I’ve left lemon water in there longer than generally acceptable, but recently it’s become a problem in a way it hasn’t before. Whenever I re-add water after cleaning it it begins to smell, I’ve tried using vinegar, those cleaning tabs, and boiling water and none of them have worked so I’m unsure of where to go from here
Try denture cleaning tablets, they work wonderful to help remove the smell
Take apart everything you can, including removing the lid seal etc. Soak every part in hot to boiling soapy water, the hotter the better, for at least 15 minutes, add a sterilising tablet, the kind you would use for baby bottles, let soak for as long as possible then wash as usual. You could also add some bicarb in, before adding the sterilising tablet.
Used this method for years on multiple different kinds of bottles, including plastic, and it has always seemed to work.
Maybe bar keepers friend
The flavor isn’t on the bottle, a good scrub with vinegar/baking soda or a coffee machine tablet would certainly remove all the flavor from the bottle.
The smell/flavor is either in the plastic of the lid or more likely, the straw. If you’re quite sensitive to smell/flavor, possibly the gaskets. I had one taste like soap, well, it still does if I leave the straw on the lid. Take the straw off/get a new one/ swap to one without it and it very likely will be fine.
The plastic is far more permeable by smells/chemicals than the metal ever will be. It is certainly somewhere in the lid assembly, whether that’s the gasket straw or lid itself you’ve gotta figure out.
If it’s really that terrible, consider swapping the entire lid assembly.
Hello. I purchased a waterbottle on ebay. When it arrived it smelled bad like some type of detergent or perfume. I opened a snad. I used vinegar bath to remove the smell but it did not work. Im glad i didnt use it because the water from that vinegar bath smelled horrible. Even after 3 baths I was advise to use bleach. Not having bleach i used clorox clinging toilet gel. Now the smell is gone but smells like clorox toilet gel. Do i trash the bottle? I received a refund, safe to drink from?. Would of rather bought the bottle on amazon for all the work i did lol.
Baking soda + water, let sit.
This is the key. I forget far more often than I should to rinse orange juice out of my water bottles. Horrible horrible smells. I don’t even need to let it sit for a day, just do a first wash normally, sniff check, then pour in a tsp of baking soda and some water. Shake good for 30 seconds. Rinse it out and do another sniff check. Often once is good, but you can repeat if necessary
I use hot water and baking soda and let sit for a day.
Hot water's not a great idea in some plastic drinking bottles. Warm water's safer.
Source: owner of a bottle that's much smaller and denser than it used to be.
if it’s plastic you’re kinda out of luck, had a similar issue with a plastic bottle i had, soaked it in dawn for a bit too long, tasted like soap forever, so i just trashed it. amazon has some good metal bottles has an alternative to the plastic ones!
The more chemicals you apply to plastic, the more unstable you make it, and you risk consuming the chemicals in the plastic as it deteriorates. A strong detergent can make it unsafe, and you used harsher chemicals that that. Toss it.
I'd toss it, or recycle it. Water bottles aren't that expensive. I lose/break them all the time.
Metal containers. Always
I've had this water bottle from Nintendo Tokyo for a while and it's always had this problem
Even if it's just been cleaned an hour ago, it'll stink. No matter how thorough you wash it (bottle brushes etc), it'll end up smelling really bad after an hour or two. No other bottle or anything does this in the house
It's a metal bottle with a plastic insert at the top to give it two different drinking holes (large for cold drinks, small for hot) and then a metal and plastic lid that merges with the insert. I can't take the insert out as it helps keep it air tight
The bottle itself usually smells fine, it's just the plastic insert and the lid
Try white vinegar wash
Put some bicarbonate of soda in it and add hot water. This kills bacteria and lifts dirt. I have used it on flasks for decades.
Put itnin a glass with warm water and a denture cleaning tab.
I would soak in water with baby bottle sterilizing tablets and scrub with a toothbrush
Take out the rubber pieces with a popsicle stick, then clean them with dishwashing detergent. Depending on the brand, you might be able to buy a replacement for the rubber parts, since it’s unlikely to fully clean them at this stage, and in the future clean them more often.
All of those rubber gaskets need to be removed every so often and possibly just replaced. It's black mold. It's probably better to just replace the bottle at this point.
It’s not black mold.
