TL;DR
Home Remedies
Several home remedies can be effective for removing stains from water bottles. Vinegar is commonly recommended due to its acidic nature, which can help break down mineral deposits and stains [1:4],
[4:1]. Baking soda is another popular choice, often used in combination with vinegar or dish soap to create a fizzy reaction that helps lift stains
[1:2],
[1:6].
Abrasive Methods
Using abrasives can also be effective for stubborn stains. Uncooked rice can be placed inside the bottle with some water and soap, then shaken vigorously to scrub the interior surfaces [2:1],
[5:4]. Similarly, salt can act as an abrasive when combined with water and dish soap
[5:1]. These methods are particularly useful for reaching areas that are difficult to clean with a brush.
Commercial Products
For those looking for commercial cleaning solutions, denture cleaning tablets have been suggested as an effective way to clean water bottles. These tablets can dissolve in water and help remove stains and odors [5:2],
[5:5]. Bar Keepers Friend is another product that has been recommended for tackling hard water spots and other tough stains
[3:1],
[4:1].
Brushes and Tools
Using the right tools can make a big difference. Silicone or rubber bristled bottle brushes are preferred by some users because they clean effectively without scratching the bottle's surface [2:3]. For particularly stubborn stains, a stout variety of bottle brush may provide the necessary leverage to dislodge grime
[2:6].
Preventive Measures
To prevent future stains, it's important to clean your water bottle regularly. Hand washing with dish soap and hot water is generally recommended over using a dishwasher, as it allows for more thorough cleaning and reduces the risk of residue build-up [4:2]. Regular maintenance will help keep your bottle clean and free from bacteria growth
[2:7].
buy brush from 3M, brush off any stain u have
use dish soap, or sodium bicarbonate from ace hardware
This part in particular is very difficult to scrub
i take it u already tried dish soap or baking soda? if still cannot go for oxy clean or varnish oxy action, very strong bleach like other user said, but it might leave bleach smell later…
after bleach clean (hopefully), to remove smell put hot water, rinse shake and repeat
or simply buy new lar, your tuperware bottle seem hopeless ady, how you get that stain anyways?
From the looks of it, it is plastic material, which in general unhealthy and further scraping will cause more microplastics in your drink. Better invest in a stainless steel one, can preserve cold drink inside too.
I have so many stainless steel bottles rust it's unreal
Either very low grade stainless steel or mild steel in disguise 🤣
Sorry to hear that you’ve been duped
Yea generally scraping or cleaning plastic bottle with abrasive brush will release tons of microplastic. So just don't use plastic bottle.
Left over tea leaves. Put in and some hot water. Shake and leave it to soak
Those silicone bottle brushes are ok too
hot water with vinegar
Salt? Sodium bicarbonate? Vinegar?
drive a ball of tissue with chopstick round and round with sabun

Its called rinsing with hot water a few times, to wash, then with cold water.
How else do you clean a water bottle?
It holds water... like whats in toilets.
Its not Brawndo
Use soap and a brush. Your mouth bacteria gets backwahed into the bottle.
With… soap… and a brush… mold can grow in water bottles
Bacteria from your mouth ends up back in the bottle. Water itself has bacteria that is fine in small, fresh doses but is gross when never cleaned and left to grow and faster and get mixed in with new bacteria every time you refill. Use soap, ffs. The hot water from your tap isn't hot enough to kill bacteria. If you're rinsing it with boiling water, you would have be doing that for several minutes for it to be effective (and would be a bad idea for certain water bottles to hold water that hot because they aren't designed for it).
There is rubber/silicone/latex bristled bottle cleaners. I find they clean way better than those in the op comment, and they definitely don't scratch anything.
Do you not just wash it with a bottle brush?
I'm like this person clearly just doesn't wash it. Everyone responding w common sense solutions like a bottle brush. LOL
the more stout variety of water bottle cleaning brush won’t bend and is super effective. these can be frustrating if the stuff you’re trying to dislodge is really on there.
I clean all my bottles with a bit of rice which scours and scrapes. Shake it vigorously with a bit of bleach and dish soap. Comes out spanking clean.
Finally a tip I can get behind!! With bottle brushes, 1) they grossed me out because they themselves hold mildew, bacteria, etc., and 2) you can’t press very hard against the glass because the wire ends, so it’s not really scrubbing the inside of the glass very well it’s more or less scraping along the inside a little bit but leaving so much behind. I really like the rice idea. Can you describe what you do exactly? How much rice to bleach to water to dish soap? Does it matter what kind of rice?
Came to say this - also good on stained mugs!
They also make them for glass and metal straws! I have several sizes of these brushes, also to clean tubular tea strainers etc.
ive only used this bottle for water only maybe 4 times since i bought it last year and has been stored in a dry place. what could these marks be and how to remove them? soap and water didn’t do much.
Looks like hard water spots. Bar keepers friend will take care of them.
Are you running it through the dishwasher? I recommend hand washing it daily. Only takes 5 minutes.
hand washing with dishwashing liquid does not work
No, I was asking how you normally wash it. Those stains look like residue from a dishwater. I’d suggest trying rubbing alcohol, vinegar, or bar keeper’s friend to remove the stains.
In my household, we give Dawn Powerwash a try on just about everything haha.
It’s a hit.
Very recently I read the tip to use denture cleaning tablets for stuff like this. Haven’t tried it myself yet, but apparently it works wonders.
Tbh I would just throw it away and next time u get a bottle make sure it can fully be scrubbed.
Ain't got the money for that
Use uncooked rice with some dish soap and water. Shake it all around in there.
Denture tablets can be good
Salt can work as an abrasive! Just use cold water and way more salt than can dissolve and a little drop of dish soap. Shake it up for a while and most stuff should come off.
So can dry rice!
Was about to ask who tf has dry ice casually at home...
Reading isn't strong today
That’s most likely mold. I had some of the same looking stuff on my water bottle that would not come off, even after being soaked in soapy water for hours. I just ending up getting a new one
This. Plastics are porous.
It’s mold. You can’t My recommendation is to a to go for the simplest kids possible. Avoid anything that has a straw/sucky thing at the top. Also look for pure stainless steal with no plastic coating like this. It’s easier to maintain and will not have this issue.
Buy a straw cleaner, looks like a little pipe cleaner. Soak the cap in boiling hot water to loosen the grime. Use the straw cleaner to get into the hole with a bit of soap and scrub it clean. Check the rest of the bottle including all seals. Then follow these steps to sanitize and disinfect
https://www.clorox.com/learn/how-to-clean-sanitize-water-bottles-with-bleach/
just classic water bottle muck and gunk, you can get a q-tip and wipe it off
I tried but the black spots won't come off
But a new one. Once you use & clean it, then store it in the freezer between uses. The mold will not have a chance to grow.
Put bleach on the q-tip. If that doesn’t work, try rubbing alcohol.
Honestly, I'd throw that away and buy a new one. Then I'd make sure to clean the new one thoroughly and often. You could clean it using the advice you've been given here, and it would be fine... I'd just never feel right about drinking from something that had gone moldy.
I have washed with hot water and dish soap, soaked overnight, and scrubbed but can’t get this off. It’s hardened on there and I think it’s just dirt and crap from my purse. I can scratch it off with like a paper clip but I need a real solution to properly clean this.
Denture cleaning tablets. Soak it over night. They are great for cleaning, especially things in hard to clean places…..water/coffee bottles, tank of coffee maker, uses are endless and they are also antibacterial
They are also way cheaper than the specialty tablets sold on Amazon.
My bottle top gets like this, I use a bottle brush, its like a long thin wire with brush bristles on the end. Works well on the straw too if there is a straw attached. I think it was a couple of quid.
I also found I could pop the mouthpeice off carefully which made life easier, but this is at risk of breakage.
Vinegar will dissolve it if it is mineral deposits.
Yeah for vinegar spritz. A quick spritz of stuff and it’s all shining. Rinses easily, won’t do you any harm anyway. Yeah for vinegar spritz.
I get this too. I put white vinegar in a plastic jug and immerse the top for about 15 minutes. If there’s any still there after that, it will just wipe off.
How do you clean your water bottles? I’ve tried so hard to get that filmy residue off and it’s Impossible to do.
Yeah bottle brushes are the way to go. I've never tried vinegar, I normally just use soap and then a lot of rinsing
Bottle brushes and white vinegar. I bought bottle brushes with wire handles so they fit through the hole easily and can be bent to clean hard to reach areas.
You can use a descaler to clean it but if you live somewhere with hard tap water, it'll be difficult to avoid. It's nothing to worry about, though, just slightly unsightly at times
I have hard water in my faucets so I just wipe down my cups
water stains, probably mineral deposits. if you don't like them just use distilled water for cleaning and drinking.
Distilled water for drinking? Are you huffing glue or something?
Distilled is okay for drinking if you add electrolytes. I was gifted a water distiller for a new nighttime breathing machine and just in time too because my tap water filter broke and I don't really have the money for a replacement at the moment. My husband snags electrolyte packets from his work so it works for now.
Hopefully they meant "but not for drinking" 😬
Hard water. No biggie! They probably wipe off.
They’re minerals, Marie.
Rock stains
Use dish soap and a bottle brush. Sometimes I use denture cleaning tablets and hot water to deep clean them.
They sell straw brush and bottle brush in pairs nowdays. Use the skinny straw brush, wet with dish soap, to wash the inside of the straw and mouth piece. Use the bottle brush, wet with dish soap, to scrub the interior of the bottle. Make sure to let the bottle dry thoroughly before closing the bottle and storing. If you plan on using it immediately after washing, then you can skip that test. I would use a sponge to wash the interior of the bottle cap.
If you have a bottle with those rubber/silicone gasket rings in the lids, they make tools to remove them so you can wash those too. Mold can grow under those if you don’t remove them to clean them unless they’re glued on. I think manufacturers used to glue them on years ago, but with the rise in popularity with these insulated bottles, they’ve stopped gluing them on for ease of cleaning.
Don’t forget to memorize how they were on originally! If you but them back on wrong, you risk bottle leakage. I found out the hard way with a metal insulated soup thermos with a lid with a gasket. Chili juice and oil leaked everywhere in my lunch bag!
I put my hydroflask in the dishwasher and it’s been fine.
Hot water and dish soap. Detach the straw if you can. Run water through the straw and the lid. Use soap with a sponge on the outer straw part in the lid.
Basically, wash it like other dishes. Very basic stuff.
getting a small pipe cleaner or straw cleaner will help clean the mouth piece and straw way better and will get rid of that gross slime that builds up. usually they come in a pack of reusable straws but check your local dollar store or even hardware store in the piping section
If you clean it daily, you don't get a build-up. You can also put the straws in the dishwasher if you have one.
You're getting so detailed for someone who literally didn't know to wash a drinking vessel. Let's start with the basics.
Mine always continue to smell like soap and I’ve never really been able to get the straws clean.
Is a soap smell not clean?
Maybe get a fragrance free soap?
In with the other dishes, use a bottle brush with the test scrubbing attachment, basically a tiny little scrub brush to clean inside the lid. Rinse well.
