How to Replace Missing LEGO Pieces

TL;DR

  • Use BrickLink for older or rare pieces.
  • Contact LEGO customer service for missing pieces from new sets.

LEGO Customer Service

If you have recently purchased a LEGO set and find that pieces are missing, contacting LEGO customer service is a reliable first step. They have a form on their website specifically for requesting replacements for missing pieces [3:2][4:1]. It's important to ensure that the pieces are genuinely missing, as sometimes they can be overlooked in packaging or misplaced [3:1][4:4].

BrickLink

For older sets or specific pieces that are no longer manufactured, BrickLink is highly recommended. This platform allows users to search for individual parts by set number and create a wanted list to shop for these parts from various sellers [2:4][5:2]. BrickLink is praised for its affordability compared to buying new sets, although you may need to order from multiple stores to complete your collection [1].

Alternative Options

eBay is another option for finding replacement LEGO pieces. Users have reported success in purchasing parts at reasonable prices [5:1]. Additionally, checking local stores or other online retailers might yield results, especially for more common pieces [3:1].

Precautions and Tips

Before assuming pieces are missing, thoroughly check the packaging, including corners of bags and inside larger pieces [3:1][4:2]. For retired sets, LEGO's official replacement service may not cover lost pieces over the years, and attempting to use this service for such purposes could risk account suspension [2:2]. Therefore, it's advisable to explore second-hand markets like BrickLink for these scenarios.

ORIGINAL POST

Hey everyone,

I’m new to the community and haven’t really been into LEGO since I was a kid, but recently I started sorting through my old collection and realized that a few parts are unfortunately missing. I made a detailed list of them and now I’m trying to figure out the best way to get these parts.

While sorting, I used BrickLink a lot and found it super helpful – the prices for individual parts there seem insanely cheap compared to buying new sets. However, I’m wondering: What’s the best way to order these loose parts? Is it realistic to get all (or most) parts from one single seller to save on shipping? Or do you usually end up buying from multiple sellers? I live in Germany.

If anyone has tips for making this process smoother (or other sites worth checking), I’d love to hear them!

Depending on modesty of request and if the pieces are still manufactured you can simply ask Lego. They have a form on the website to request replacements.

Retired LEGO sets

Posted by Creepy_Challenge_521 · in r/lego · 2 months ago

I recently discovered a bunch of retired LEGO sets from when I was a kid that my mom kept around. They are for the most part intact, however most are missing a few pieces or larger structures. I’d like to try and restore as many as possible, and was wondering how I might go about replacing the missing pieces? Any help would be appreciated!

I think on the Lego website, they have a form you can fill out for missing pieces. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll get them, but worth a shot.

That service is for replacing parts from brand new lego sets, not bricks you have lost over the years. Doing this will put OP's account at risk of being banned as it's against their ToS

At any rate, they have a parts inventory here. It doesn’t hurt to reach out and ask them.

Bricklink. Look up each set by number, go to parts list and verify each part. If you are missing one, add it to a wanted list, then shop for parts from your wanted list. You will likely need to order from many different stores. I start with a rare piece, find someone selling it for a fair price and see what else off of my list they have.

Give Lego customer support a call, the phone number is in the instruction guide or on their website and they can send you the missing pieces.

Always check the corners of the piece bags and check inside larger pieces.

It is fairly rare that sets are missing pieces and I almost always find the other piece in the bag, the box, or tucked inside the back of another piece.

As already mentioned, customer support will replace any pieces you might be missing if it truly is missing.

If you're ever looking for pieces in general, you can check online retailers for parts or local stores. I use bricklink, but there are probably other secondhand retailers. Lego.com has an ever-broadening selection of pick-a-brick options as well.

Also, check the plastic bag to ensure you got out all of the pieces before throwing it away (I've made this mistake). But if you check what the first commenter said, and then make sure you didn't throw them away, you can file a request for missing parts on the lego website and they'll ship them to you for free. It usually takes 7-10 days.

I guess it depends where you live, I said 7-10 because I'd ordered a replacement piece like the day before I made the comment and that was what I was quoted, and it came on the shorter end of the estimate.

Agree with others. 99% of the time I've either overlooked it, laid it some place weird, or the piece made a break for it and it's somewhere on the floor.

Double, tripplw check and then check again all th bags, check the floor, check under the seat. The number of times I've got mad about a missing piece only to find it later.

That said, it does happen and you can get a replacement from Lego via their support section on the website.

Opinions on replacing broken / missing pieces via Lego.com vs Bricklink

Posted by Starlight_Skull · in r/lego · 1 year ago

Basically the title.

I've been going through my old sets and I have a lot of broken and missing parts that I would like to replace but I'm not sure how strict Lego customer service is or if I'd be better off just ordering new pieces either from the official pick-a-brick or third party like Bricklink.

I've never used any of the above services so I'm just looking for advice.

Note that most of the parts are from older sets (2000 - 2010).

no reason not to try lego broken part service regardless of age. it's a very simple process and will let you know if they will cover it or not. also depending on the part...i'm not saying you should do this...but you can just pick a newer set and get the piece from that one if it's too old.

Bricklink is the way to go. Parts for those sets likely aren't in production any more. Lego will have updated colors and new mold variants.

I wouldn't use the missing service for parts that have gone missing from my old sets. The intent there is to replace parts that are missing from the original packaging when you buy a set. I would use Bricklink for those.

For broken parts, Lego can only replace parts that they still make and have in stock. For older sets, they are less likely to have parts than Bricklink. I'd check, but probably just use Bricklink because it's faster.

Has anyone printed replacement Lego bricks, any tips?

Can you? Sure. Should you? No.

Legos have some incredible precision and 3D printers can't even get close to that precision meaning that the parts will either have too much or too little clutch power. And dialing in the dimensions will be a painful process too. You might as well just get some free replacements like u/ramk13 said or buy replacements through a site like bricklink.

The only good use for printed Legos is if you're making a custom part that doesn't exist in the actual Lego inventory.

0 upvotes on reddit
AZrightsThrowaway · 22 days ago

Or you can just dial in your tolerances with a little effort. I have printed thousands, and there are several resources that have them all mapped by item number and already scaled.

Hell you can even export pieces from Lego studio and then scale and print them. It does take a little tweaking tolerance/hole compensation but not really that hard. And modern printers can get very close to the precision, it's the strength that is lacking. Especially with a .02 nozzle I even get the Lego logo on the studs themselves...

You mean generic interlocking plastic construction bricks? Because people only print generic interlocking plastic construction bricks, we would NEVER print Lego that would be bad and wrong.

This is not what you are asking, but Lego will send you replacements for missing pieces for free. They have a web form you can fill out and the pieces show up in a few weeks. Over hundreds of sets I've only done it twice, and it wasn't for missing pieces, it was for broken/mangled ones.

What's the best way to keep track of missing pieces?

Posted by Nalyd217 · in r/lego · 2 years ago

Most of my sets are together and 95% complete, but almost all of them are missing a few pieces. What's the best way to keep track of the pieces I need? I've been using a spreadsheet, but it's kind of annoying typing it all in, and pictures would be helpful. As far as I can tell, bricklink can't do this. I've seen some people mention rebrickable, but I can only say yes or no to groups of pieces (If a set has 10 of the same part, but I'm only missing 2, I want to mark it that way). I saw a different post mention the BrickStock program, but it seems a bit confusing and hard to use.

There is no automated way but you certainly could do this on Bricklink. Create a wanted list then populate the list with the info from your spreadsheet. You will end up with a list of all your missing pieces including a picture and the number of each missing pieces. In the remarks section of each item you can indicate in which set it is missing. If the same part is missing in multiple sets you can also indicate in the remarks section that 2 go to this set, 1 for this set and so on.

6 upvotes on reddit
Nalyd217 · OP · 2 years ago

I just realized wanted lists would work for this and came back to edit my post lol. I don't need to do the spreadsheet even. You can create a wanted list out of a set, then go through and mark the parts I have. When I'm done, I just sort by pieces I have, and all of the missing ones will go to the top.

3 upvotes on reddit
mirrorzreflectyou · 2 years ago

Exactly like you said if you want a separate list for each set. Just use the automated part out tool and mark all the parts you have. The method I gave is easier if you just want to purchase all the parts in one go.

Has anyone else noticed a decline in quality control from LEGO?

Posted by Hajikki · in r/lego · 7 months ago

I have been collecting and building with LEGO for over 40 years now. Up until recently, I had never been missing a piece. Then, early last year, a set was missing a piece. Oh, well, had to happen eventually.

However, in the last three months, I have had to contact LEGO for a missing piece 3 times. It was on 3 out of 4 sets, all purchased from official LEGO brick and mortar stores. Has anyone else noticed an increased frequency of missing pieces?

And yes, I am sure they are missing and not just stuck in the bag or dropped. I love LEGO, but this seems a troubling trend.

I think the 100 odd sets I’ve bought, only one have had a missing piece.

I think to get multiple does lean towards user error. Did you have any similar size left over parts after finishing each set?

And have these sets been in the new paper bags? Since they are crazy good at keeping pieces hidden inside. I went mad about 5 times while building the UCS Sail Barge.

Hajikki · OP · 7 months ago

No. Still the old clear plastic. The only surplus I have are the traditional 1-stud "extras" that are thrown in. I am not new to this. Precautions are taken. And it hasn't been simple simple pieces easy to replace out of my old stock. I emphasize this is very new. Literally hundreds of sets in the past with no errors. But 3 out of the last 4 is concerning to me. Have US based stores been receiving stock from a different factory recently? It was on the new Christmas Wreath, the Blacktron Renegade, and the Medieval Dragon.

Yep, 30+ years collecting…at least 1 set per month…never had more than 1 missing piece before 5 years ago…now it’s 1 in every 3-4 sets at least 1 common piece is missing

At least once a year I have a set with a close to dozen pieces either missing or wrong colour

As a serious collector I have a big stockpile of spares and I can normally overcome it…but these days they always seem to want to have a more unique element or colour, and replacements are not always on hand

The worst I have ever seen was from the Home Alone House. Almost 35 missing pieces....and I had to go through hoops to get them....had to send 3 photos, payment receipts, the lot number from the box, a total of 8 emails and then it took 2 months to get them.

I agree....quality control is down hill

Seriously? I had a set where half the pieces from the first bag were missing and they sent me the entire bag no questions asked. Then that one was taking way to ling to arrive, I complained and they sent me another one express shipping.

Well...here is Canada this is what I had to do. The lady CS rep I guess didn't believe that Lego could make such an error. They took the batch number (?) from the tape that held the box closed....and said she would get back to me as soon as the "investigation" was complete.

The pieces just showed up one day....never heard another work about the investigation of the results.

How to replace missing LEGO pieces

Here are some key considerations for replacing missing LEGO pieces:

  1. Identify the Missing Piece:

    • Use the LEGO set's instruction manual or the LEGO website to find the exact piece number and description.
  2. Check Your Collection:

    • Before ordering, search through your existing LEGO collection. Sometimes pieces can be misplaced or mixed in with other sets.
  3. LEGO Customer Service:

    • Visit the LEGO Customer Service website. They offer a replacement parts service where you can order specific pieces directly from LEGO.
  4. Third-Party Websites:

    • Consider using third-party websites like BrickLink or Brick Owl, where you can buy individual pieces from other LEGO enthusiasts or sellers.
  5. Local LEGO Stores:

    • Some LEGO stores have a "Pick a Brick" wall or may offer replacement pieces for free or at a low cost. It's worth asking!
  6. Community Forums:

    • Engage with LEGO communities on platforms like Reddit or dedicated LEGO forums. Members often have spare pieces or can guide you on where to find them.

Recommendation: If you're missing a piece from a currently available set, ordering directly from LEGO is usually the most reliable option. For older or discontinued sets, third-party websites like BrickLink can be invaluable. Always double-check the piece number to ensure you get the correct replacement!
