TL;DR To reset the PRAM on an Intel-based MacBook, restart and hold down Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound. Hold them until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound again. For M1 Macs, PRAM reset is not applicable.
Understanding PRAM/NVRAM
PRAM (Parameter RAM) and NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) store settings that your Mac uses during startup. These include display resolution, time zone, speaker volume, and more [1:1]. Resetting these can solve various issues such as network speed problems or external display connectivity
[1].
Resetting PRAM on Intel Macs
For Intel-based Macs, resetting PRAM involves restarting your Mac and holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after hearing the startup sound. Keep holding these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound again [2:1]. If your keyboard has issues, using a USB keyboard might be necessary
[2:2].
M1 Macs and PRAM/NVRAM
M1 Macs do not have a traditional PRAM or SMC reset. They operate similarly to iPhones and iPads where NVRAM resets are not required [3:2]. However, some users have attempted to clear NVRAM using terminal commands in recovery mode, but this is not officially supported and may cause issues
[3:3].
Troubleshooting Dead MacBooks
If your MacBook is unresponsive even after attempting PRAM and SMC resets, consider trying different chargers or taking it to a repair shop. Some users have reported success by letting the device "drain" overnight with the backplate removed [5:3], although this method is unconventional and should be approached with caution.
Just from what I have seen at my job it seems to work without any sort of rhyme or rhythm. Why the hell was it the solution for my network speed issue as well as not connecting to a external display? What goes on behind the scenes there?
It's an older article, but lists some of the items that can be stored in NVRAM/PRAM on Macs.

Resetting it resets to Factory Defaults
How or there is no way to do it
Try a USB keyboard, any model designed for Mac will usually work, and some PC keyboards will too.
You can also do it from Terminal, not clear if you can boot and get to terminal.
It's not working for me on the M1.
Any thoughts?
The M1 doesn’t have PRAM or SMC reset. It works similar like the iPhone and iPad.
Exactly what I needed to hear, thanks!
Not a problem, thank you for the reply
In my experience, I tried the “nvram -c” in Recovery mode on my M1 MacBook Pro, restarted the machine, and was booted back into recovery with a real scary error message that said something to the effect of “this copy of macOS is damaged and needs to be reinstalled.” I ignored that and restarted again and everything is fine now going on two weeks since. It did seem to at least wipe the remembered WiFi networks from Recovery, so I imagine the command does work to at least some extent. If you’re brave you can try and see if it fixes your issue :-)
...and sorry, forgot to mention I got that command from the Macworld article listed below.
I did not read the whole thing, but this article seems to say there is no NVRAM reset on M1 Macs: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/reset-nvram-mac-3801373/
I’m using a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (15.4", 2.6GHz Core i7 – Mid 2019). I hadn’t used it for about a week, and when I tried today, it wouldn’t power on. I charged it the entire day, but it’s still completely unresponsive. I’ve already tried the common troubleshooting steps I found online (SMC reset, key combinations, etc.), but nothing has worked so far.
Has anyone faced a similar issue or know what else I can try to get it working?
Could try use other charger and cable.
If there are nearby Apple store could bring it there.

I have the same model and same issue recently despite two different chargers and overnight charging and yeah the reset thing. Gave up an brought it to a repair place. The repair place removed it the backplate and let it “drain” overnight. They got it booting again. Don’t know if that was a ruse or legit fix.
Be sure to try two different chargers because they can go bad. I had to replace the charger brick about four years ago.
Also I replaced the battery last year when the same thing happened.
Good luck!
I tried two different chargers but it didn't work. Your mac started working after the overnight draining?
The repair place got it to boot. That is what they claimed worked. Again, not sure if that was a ruse. But I didn’t care because I tried everything that should have worked.
As titled
I believe you just leave your MagSafe or USB-C charger plugged in, shut down, and power back on
You could try the nvram command from terminal
man nvram
Dangerous though you could try deleting items one at a time to see if they helps.
Maybe worth ask here about why you think you need to do this...
Thanks. My window server process is running 40% and I’m trying to figure out why. My battery is halved and it’s just sluggish
Ask Dr Google
I appreciate the help.

Reinstall Monterey- agree to terms and continue.
Should probably erase the disk first in Disk Utility just to be safe, since you don’t know what it’s like before it hits your hands.
Thank. I’ll try this
Maca are actually easier to walk people through compared to PCs; sending it back would honestly be harder.
They did reset it, just didn’t reinstall macOS.
Click Disk Utility, then click View in the menu bar and select View Devices.
Then find the Apple SSD in the very top of the list on the side bar in Disk Utility.
Click “Erase” and choose options “APFS” and “GUID Partition Map.” When it’s done, click “Disk Utility” in the menu bar, then quit the app. You’ll end up back on the screen in your picture.
Then click “Reinstall macOS Monterey.” Accept the Terms and Conditions, then click the next button, click the disk you just erased, and start installing macOS.
When it’s done, macOS will be ready to setup brand new.
Hi there -
Long time Mac user who is usually able to debug/troubleshoot issues. However, at work I recently traded in my 4 year old MacBook Pro and received a new MacBook Pro with TouchBar, and the new laptop is having some strange issues at boot whenever there are any USB devices connected (it stalls and the progress bar never appears). I have to unplug all USB devices in order for the laptop to continue booting.
Typically in these situations I would resort to zapping PRAM and/or resetting the SMC controller. However on this new laptop there is no power button. In addition, when I shutdown the computer, as soon as I hit any key the computer powers on and doesn't seem to recognize that I am holding COMMAND-OPTION-P-R down.
All documentation online, even for the newest Macbook Pros, specifically refer to pressing/holding a "power button" -- but there is none. After a while I assumed that maybe the TouchID area doubled as a power button, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Are there special instructions to zap the PRAM on a new MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) with TouchBar?
Touchbar still has a Power Button = https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201150
Reset NVRam or PRam = https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
Thanks. Yeah, something else must be up as I did follow those steps. Either that or resetting the PRAM hasn’t fixed the issue and there’s some USB device that is preventing my Mac from booting
The fingerprint reader IS the power button. Press it and you will feel it depress slightly.
The TouchID sensor is a physical button that acts as the power button if you press it. Maybe you weren't pushing hard enough?

Hey all, I’m looking to maximize performance out of a M1 MacBook Pro. Thinking of just doing a complete factory reset and updating OS. Is this something you think would be good to do? Any other insight as to what you can do to keep this machine operating at its full potential would be great to learn.
Download and run the maintenance tasks of software called ONYX. It’s free and I run it once a month on all machines
Keep the internal SSD less than half full
Yeah this is definitely one rule I’ve always followed
I don’t think these really speed up an M series processor, but they used to help with Intel. I got into the habit of using them and just carried on with the M series as well. Some actually help, others just make the mac feel faster:
There are probably a few more tricks, but these are just the ones I remember off the top of my head
Now my Mac won’t start up. I get a cancel symbol and not the apple symbol. I tried because none of my apps were showing up in my privacy settings to allow (if anyone has another fix in patched Sur let me know)
If you do.. plug in the USB(installer), hold option at startup and click EFI boot... it shuts down computer.. then start it up again and back to 100%! Whew.
Thanks for the fix... I just have to remember this when I am panicked after resetting PRAM
