TL;DR To reset the SMC on most Intel-based MacBooks, shut down your computer, then press and hold Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the built-in keyboard, along with the power button, for 10 seconds. Release all keys and turn on your Mac. M1 Macs do not have an SMC to reset.
Resetting SMC on Intel-Based MacBooks
For MacBooks with removable batteries, you should first shut down your Mac, remove the battery, disconnect the power adapter, and press the power button for 5 seconds before reconnecting everything [1:1]. For models with non-removable batteries, shut down your Mac, press and hold Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard and the power button for 10 seconds, then release all keys and turn on your Mac

Challenges with Non-Functional Batteries
If your MacBook's battery is dead and you're unable to perform an SMC reset, it might be necessary to replace the battery or use one with some charge to proceed with the reset [5:1]. Without power in the battery, the SMC reset won't work, so visiting a service center might be required
[5:1].
SMC on M1 Macs
M1 Macs do not have a traditional SMC, and therefore, there isn't a method to reset it. Apple Support suggests simply powering off the device and waiting for 30 seconds, although this may not resolve issues related to peripherals [2:1].
Common Issues Leading to SMC Reset
Users often resort to resetting the SMC due to issues like charging problems, display issues, or performance anomalies [3:1],
[5:1]. If your MacBook fails to turn on or boot into recovery mode, checking the power source or considering a battery replacement might be necessary

Hello. I have a1342 macbook. I am wondering how should i reset the SMC if i have no battery?
You have googled it already? Otherwise, try google first. (Or DuckDuckGo or Startpage.com). You will be amazed how much information you will get within a split of a second
I found nothing
I searched on support.apple.com and google but I wasn’t able to find how to do this or if it’s even possible. Anyone have any insight?
I called the apple support and the guys says. power off - waiting 30s its done with the smc reset. but I must say in my case it doesn't work. I would get runt a Anker 7in2 dock with usb-c as a display port but it doesn't run jet. peace ✌
Apple support just googles your issues. The "power off - waiting 30s" response is just the first answer available on Apple forums.
According to Apple, this link will help you reset your Mac's SMC.

Out of curiosity, what issues are you facing that is forcing you to reset your SMC?
I hope this helps! :)
I unstalled al diente and just wanted to make sure my battery doesn’t break.
I see, I hope all goes well, then!

Does it boot to Recovery?
Which key did you press for smc reset, i have the same issue but mine is completely dead…..
I just noticed my cord doesn’t light up when I’m charging my MacBook. Normally I reset my SMC but that doesn’t seem to work because there is no power left in the battery. When I try to turn it on it gives a symbol that I need to plug it in, even though it’s plugged in. Anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it? The smc reset won’t work because there is no power but I can’t charge it without doing the smc reset...
Hmm you might have to replace the battery if it's not responding to your power cord, unless you try a different cord or check another outlet.
Yeah I’m afraid I’ll have to. Or at least replace it with one that has some power in it so I can do the smc reset.. see no way around it than going by a service center..
It’s been a while but how did you end up solving this if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m using a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (15.4", 2.6GHz Core i7 – Mid 2019). I hadn’t used it for about a week, and when I tried today, it wouldn’t power on. I charged it the entire day, but it’s still completely unresponsive. I’ve already tried the common troubleshooting steps I found online (SMC reset, key combinations, etc.), but nothing has worked so far.
Has anyone faced a similar issue or know what else I can try to get it working?
Could try use other charger and cable.
If there are nearby Apple store could bring it there.
Hey, I turned on my MacBook to see an empty battery symbol with a cross through it. I had the battery replaced a few years ago. So after some googling, I figure it needs a SMC reset.
However, it will not turn on when I am holding shift+Ctrl+options. It only switches on when these keys aren’t pressed.
Is there an easy solution solve this?
It isn’t supposed to turn on when you press that combo of keys. Just hold it for 5-10 seconds when on charger, let go and turn the Mac on. The LED light from the charger should change color briefly, that’s how you know the SMC reset worked.

This is corrrect way to reset SMC. The MacBook doesn't has T2 chip.

I have the same model and same issue recently despite two different chargers and overnight charging and yeah the reset thing. Gave up an brought it to a repair place. The repair place removed it the backplate and let it “drain” overnight. They got it booting again. Don’t know if that was a ruse or legit fix.
Be sure to try two different chargers because they can go bad. I had to replace the charger brick about four years ago.
Also I replaced the battery last year when the same thing happened.
Good luck!
I tried two different chargers but it didn't work. Your mac started working after the overnight draining?
The repair place got it to boot. That is what they claimed worked. Again, not sure if that was a ruse. But I didn’t care because I tried everything that should have worked.
I appreciate the help.
Reinstall Monterey- agree to terms and continue.
Should probably erase the disk first in Disk Utility just to be safe, since you don’t know what it’s like before it hits your hands.
Thank. I’ll try this

Maca are actually easier to walk people through compared to PCs; sending it back would honestly be harder.
They did reset it, just didn’t reinstall macOS.
Click Disk Utility, then click View in the menu bar and select View Devices.
Then find the Apple SSD in the very top of the list on the side bar in Disk Utility.
Click “Erase” and choose options “APFS” and “GUID Partition Map.” When it’s done, click “Disk Utility” in the menu bar, then quit the app. You’ll end up back on the screen in your picture.
Then click “Reinstall macOS Monterey.” Accept the Terms and Conditions, then click the next button, click the disk you just erased, and start installing macOS.
When it’s done, macOS will be ready to setup brand new.
