TL;DR
Step-by-Step Process
To reverse audio in Audacity, you'll first need to download and install the software if you haven't already. Once installed, open Audacity and load the audio file you want to work with. You can do this by dragging the file into the Audacity window or using the "File" menu to open it. After loading your audio, highlight the section you wish to reverse. Navigate to the "Effect" menu at the top of the screen, scroll down to find "Reverse," and click it. This will reverse the selected portion of your audio clip. Finally, you can play back the audio to ensure it sounds as expected, and then save it if you're satisfied with the result [1:1].
Common Issues and Tips
Some users may encounter issues when trying to reverse audio if they are unfamiliar with the interface or if certain settings are enabled. For example, in other software like Logic Pro X, features such as Flex Time must be turned off for the reverse function to work properly [5:1]. In Audacity, ensure that you've properly selected the audio segment you wish to reverse. If you're new to audio editing, take some time to familiarize yourself with basic functions like selecting audio sections and applying effects, which can make the process smoother.
Alternative Solutions
If you're unable to use Audacity or prefer not to download additional software, consider looking for online tools that offer audio reversing capabilities. However, these might have limitations regarding file size or format. Alternatively, if you're working within another DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Logic Pro X or Cakewalk, similar steps apply: locate the reverse function within the software's effect or processing menus [4:1]
[5:2].
By following these steps, you should be able to reverse audio tracks effectively in Audacity, allowing you to achieve the desired sound effect for your project.
I am sorry I just need it for a ARG
You can do it yourself using Audacity.
Audacity is free. Can be downloaded here:
https://www.audacityteam.org/download/
To do a simple reverse, load audio file, select the section of the audio you want to reverse, use the "effect" menu, select reverse, then play or save the audio.
I don’t use audacity and I cannot download it

Hi, you might be able to help me :)
I have the sound of a car driving from left to right and I need it to sound from right to left. How can I do that?
I tried reversing it but I do not want that reversing sound effect that happens when I do that I need the same sound but like if it was "mirrored".
Thank you!
NB: My Audacity version is 2.3.3 if that helps :)
split the stereo track into separate left and right channels by going to the down arrow next to the name of the track, and clicking [Split Stereo Track] and from there, use the LR slider thing to move the left to the right, and vice versa
hope this helps!
Yes, it worked. Thank you! :)
So I'm making audio for a game, and i have a sound already for opening a door, but I'd like to use the same audio for closing it but flipped. Is there any way to do that?
You mean reversing the audio? That's not how doors sound.
It will not work what you imagine but you can reverse by selecting the clip, clicking ‚Effect‘ at the top, then ‚Pitch and Tempo‘ and there is ‚Reverse‘
So if I want it the way I imagine, basically the same sound clip but the final part first and first part last, I'd have to do it myself using the same method I did to create it?? Damn that's upsetting.
Thanks for help, anyway!!
Now I‘m confused.
You simply want to reverse the clip of already existing opening door, right? Then reverse it.
But a door doesn‘t sound the same while opening/closing like if it‘s just reversed. Do you have that bang or thud when you open a door? If so, you got weird doors^^
Is there a feature in Cakewalk where I can reverse melodies or audio tracks? Even a simple plugin will do.
It is there highlight the audio u want to reverse then on the top left go to process the reverse effect
If you are trying to reverse a midi track freeze the track then do the same process and it will work
Process - Apply effect - Reverse
I still can't believe they don't have this feature, but if it is there somewhere it's buried VERY deep in the program, which makes no sense, it should be right there in the right click menu.
Idk if you still need this, but further up there was a guy who said th8is
>Process--> Apply effect --> Reverse
Works just fine for me
This. I assumed it was there. Shocked to hear it might not be
Process--> Apply effect --> Reverse
That's from SONAR
WHAT
I suppose you could install audacity and use that to reverse an audio clip. Although it’s an external program and not a plug in
I’m trying to reverse this audio which I converted to audio from midi. I’m pressing functions but i’m not seeing the option to reverse like in the video tutorials i’ve seen. I’m using Logic Pro X, any help would be much appreciated 🙏
You have to be in "file" mode (centre, at the top of the audio editor panel)
You can reverse the file non-destructively from the region inspector in the main window too - it's under the "more" dropdown.
Thanks! That got it done, gonna sound stupid but i’ve never opened the audio file editor before lol
Nice.
If you want to try some really old-school time stretching, you can try the "Time and Pitch machine" in the file editor. That's what we used to use in the olden days before Flex was invented.
You've probably got the "Track" button selected. At the top of the edit window there are three buttons - Track, File, and Smart Tempo. Select "File" and you should see the options you're looking for.
Two handy tricks - If you hold the option key and double click the audio, you'll get the audio edit window to pop out on its own. I personally find it WAAAAAY easier to edit audio and midi and whatever else this way than having to deal with half sized windows etc. Also super nice if you have multiple screens since you can move the window over to another screen and still see all of your arrangement window on your other screen.
2nd trick is you don't have to destructively reverse samples. You can do it easily on a case by case scenario directly from the arrangement window. Select the audio you want to reverse, go to the track inspector, twirl down the "Region" menu, then "more" and then click the "reverse" toggle switch. You'll reverse your sample. The nice thing is that unlike using the audio editor, it WON'T reverse every single instance of that sample which is handy.
i made that bad boy a shortcut. i can reverse without menu diving or opening the audio editor.
Select the region in the tracks area and hit (shift + ctrl + R)
Have you turned OFF Flex Time? The Reverse Audio feature won't work if Flex Time is ON.
Annoying thing
I don't think you can reverse flex'd audio -- try bouncing it first to see if the option becomes available.
You were correct! Thank you!
You'e welcome!

Select the audio you want to reverse, click „E“ on your keyboard, open „File“ on the top of the window which opened from the bottom, than from the „Functions“ dropdown menu on the left choose „Reverse“.
I recently had to re-download audacity and forgot which version I was using previously (it wasn't the latest). I used to be able to click just below the timecode and the playback would follow my cursor, making it easy to quickly hear how a bit of audio sounds reversed. I try it on the new version and it does not do this anymore. Is there a way to enable this feature in the latest version? I'd really like to be able to hear reversed bits with just a click.
I have to say the new version of Audacity sucks. So many features not working like they used to. It’s a real mess.
Hi all,
I'm not sure how to do this, but is there anyway to made a faded out part of an audio file "reversed" so it's all one volume? I'm making ringtones and there are parts of the song that shift in volume.
Thanks!
Not the most elegant solution, but you could crank the volume of the entire track, then compress the crap out of it.
In an interview with RZA, he said he did this for some of the Kung Fu samples on Wu-Tang's first album.
I'll try that thank you! I'm a virgin when it comes to audio editing. I know just enough to get me by.
This worked very well! Thank you so much! I love listening to those parts that you can't hear well at the end
Glad to hear it worked
I'd like to add a reverse guitar overdub to one of the sections of a song. The thing is, the effect is just so unpredictable that I'm having trouble working out a part I like. Do you have any suggestions for this sort of thing?
Record it regularly how you want it to sound once reversed, then reverse it, learn it backwards, re-record it, and reverse it again?
Think about how you normally compose a solo… don’t just noodle. Simple rules like starting with lower notes and ending high… then play that in reverse., starting with the big finale then ending with the intro. Record it with reverb if you want that sucking sound. It really is a different way of thinking.
Figure out what you want to play, learn it backwards, record it and flip it.
Bounce that section out as a separate file, then reverse it and try out ideas over that.
you can do that. you can also do tape vary speed things like this. Studio One needed a late update/upgrade to get pitch integrated well enough but it's there in mst places if you are engaged enough and work hard enough. It's all there to throw the boomerang a certain direction and get what is comings from that direction when you go back and reverse it and speed and pitch back.
I came into the thread to suggest this, so I’ll second it instead.
A half trick I do is record a part, flip it backwards and add delay and reverb. Bounce that. Reverse back to normal. The swells sound reversed but the part is still there normal. It works if you want that effect but really need the part to be exact.
If I want a 100% reversed part, it's hit or miss how it lines up. You just have to record a few parts, reverse them and hope one of the tracks lands in a cool way.
This is a pretty cool idea. Thanks!
There are no up to date tutorials as (I am going to assume) they updated it and removed the “reverse button.” Any help would be appreciate. Thanks!
When you have the sample on the field, pull up from the bottom where the piano usually is and there's a "rev" button for the selected sample
