TL;DR: Contact T-Mobile directly to unlock your phone, ensure it's paid off and meets eligibility criteria, and use the T-Mobile Device Unlock app if applicable.
Eligibility and Requirements
To unlock a T-Mobile phone, it must generally be paid off and meet certain eligibility requirements. T-Mobile does not charge for unlocking a device that is fully paid [1:1]. However, if the phone is still under a payment plan, they will not unlock it until it’s fully paid
[1:1],
[4:11].
Unlocking Process
The process of unlocking a T-Mobile phone can vary depending on whether you have an Android or iPhone. For Android devices, you can use the T-Mobile Device Unlock app, which checks the IMEI number to determine if the phone is eligible for unlocking [2:1]. For iPhones, the process involves contacting T-Mobile, who will then submit a request to Apple to unlock the device
[2:2]. This can take a few days
[2:4].
Customer Service and Support
Many users have reported difficulties with the unlocking process, including long wait times and miscommunications between T-Mobile and Apple [5:1],
[5:3]. It is recommended to contact T-Mobile customer service directly, either by phone or through their social media support team (T-Force) on platforms like Twitter or Facebook
[2:4],
[5:8]. In some cases, asking to speak with a supervisor or mentioning arbitration clauses has expedited the process
[5:2].
Alternative Methods and Considerations
If you are experiencing issues with unlocking, some users have suggested trying alternative methods such as using a SIM card from another carrier to check if the phone is unlocked [5:7]. Additionally, factory resetting the phone or resetting network settings may help resolve any lingering lock issues, although these steps should be approached with caution
[5:6].
Conclusion
While unlocking a T-Mobile phone can sometimes be a frustrating process, following the official guidelines and ensuring all eligibility criteria are met can facilitate a smoother experience. If issues persist, leveraging T-Mobile's customer support channels can often lead to a resolution.
So I'm switching to another carrier, but I can’t activate my new SIM till T-Mobile unlocks my phone.
Apparently you can unlock it yourself using ExpressUnlocks, but it's asking for money.
Is that the only way to unlock it or if I went into a physical store they could do it for free?
It's such a pain to get them to unlock it. I'm waiting on one device for the past ten days now - and it took two visits to the local store plus two hours of customer service calls to get to this point. They're supposed to text me when it was done, and nothing yet.
Go directly thru T-Mobile https://www.t-mobile.com/support/devices/unlock-your-mobile-wireless-device#heading4
T-Mob and other carriers do not charge to unlock a PAID OFF device. But if it's not paid off, they aren't going to unlock it.
In-store or over the phone?
Store reps don't have the tools for it. Call in.
So one of my family members is planning to give me their phone from tmobile. I was wondering how i could unlock it to use it on another carrier.
I think gnardog45 comment is only for Android devices. If you have an iPhone, it’s easiest if your family member contacts T-Mobile directly to have the iPhone unlocked. I think that’s the only way for an iPhone, as it’s not T-Mobile that actually does it, the submit the request to Apple.
Yes they have an iphone xr they want to give me. So i wasnt sure.
Just have them hit up T-Mobile via phone or preferably, via Twitter or Facebook direct messenger. It will take a day or two Max for Apple to process the unlock.
Just download the T-Mobile unlock app. Couldn't get any simpler than that. It reads your IMEI number to make sure the phone is paid off. Boom, that's it. Just kind of scans your phone for a few seconds. And tells you if it's eligible or not.
The reason I know is because a T-Mobile rep. accidentally closed out a phone I was using through a lease program. I think I only made one payment, turns out he closed it out and the phone was mine for free.
I heard about it, but i heard mixed answers saying that it dont always work and i would need to call tmobile and go through a process..
That's how I made sure the phone was paid off, mistakenly by a T-Mobile rep. Haha
voice call the carrier you believe the phone is currently assigned to. they can send you an unlock email and they can unlock their phone. remember that its not an android or apple manufacturer issue to unlock a phone, its the actual service provider.
so if that phone is on T-Mobile, call those guys, if it's on Verizon, call those guys.
they'll usually send you an email within a day and the phone will unlock the next time you use it. I suggest you "erase all" and clear all settings so you can start fresh. Hope that helps. I just did it with T-Mobile myself
If you need any reason to not get T-Mobile then here it is. At the beginning of the year in February I wanted to make the switch from AT&T to T-Mobile. I got the phone, paid in full, and for two months it was a nightmare talking to customer service just trying to pay my bill. At month 3 after unsuccessfully trying to pay I pretty much was told at the physical store to mail a check to x location for them to process payment. At month 5 they cancelled my plan for non payment. I walked back across the street to AT&T. So today my cousin broke his phone at work. Seeing as I had a good phone just locked to T-Mobile I sold it to him. He called to get it unlocked and they said they had to talk to me. I called and they said i had to pay my remaining balance. I paid it, way easier using their guest portal you just can't see the balance. Pretty sketchy not going to lie. I called again and they said the phone is unlocked (it wasn't). Called again and they said I had to unlock it (I can't). Called again they said they sent a request. When I asked for clarification on it they said they couldn't tell me much just that I would be receiving an email.
Why is T-Mobile customer service so sketchy????
Honestly if anybody can confirm this is the actual process to unlock a T-Mobile phone I will have peace of mind.
What kind of phone is it?
A Samsung a52
Settings > connections> more connection settings> network unlock> permanent unlock
I paid 3 off online - within minutes I was able to unlock through phone settings.
How can I unlock a t-mobile phone? I'm looking at getting a phone but what do I need to do to unlock it? Thinking about getting a phone without any plan because tmobile will let you do that... What all has to be done?
I don't think the pay'd off clause is necessary anymore. I got two phones recently still on EIP and both are unlocked. I think it's just the 40 days on network that's concrete
It depends. On some androids at least, I believe that’s typically strictly enforced because it’s done through the unlock app which connects internally to T-Mobile’s system.
iPhones, they’re generally more lenient and would either tell customers either to make 2 payments if you recently got it, or just unlock it anyhow.
I've unlocked both my oneplus 7t and lg velvet 5g with the stock unlock app in the network settings. I didn't do anything special. Both phone are still on EIP. Oneplus was purchased on the July add a line and the velvet on the sept.
I just waited till after 40 days on the network and both unlocked after a few trys/days apart.
I got 2 LG wing a month ago and I was able to unlock them both the day I bought them.
How did you do it?
Wow that’s good to know. Yeah thought you had to have the phone paid off. That is why I waited to unlock my last iPhones. So with my new IPhone just be on network 40 days and they will unlock it?
I just got my iPhone mini unlocked on EIP after a week. The rep said since I was on the Magenta Military Plan with an iPhone they had no problems unlocking it. It did take about 5 days to unlock compared to two days previously for my XS.
Why not just buy the phone unlocked from the manufacturer?
I can unlock it for you
Paid off and on the network for 40 days.
If it’s a phone sold by T-Mobile, and it’s fully paid there should be an app (device unlock) for that. At least that’s what I have on my Samsung.
I paid off my phone over a year ago, my account is fully eligible to be unlocked, I called 72 hours ago to unlock my phone, and it still isn’t unlocked. They’re saying they submitted the request to unlock it, but it’s up to Apple to actually unlock. Apple says it’s up to T Mobile.
I leave for a trip tomorrow where I need a foreign SIM card. Whose responsibility is this and what can I do?
I know I’m late to the party but I just had this happen to me. I called T-Mobile and they tried to tell me my like needed to be active to unlock even though I was a customer for 10 years, my phone was fully paid off, and there was no balance on my account.
After talking to COUNTLESS representatives I asked for a supervisor and asked them how I could invoke the arbitration clause, considering my account checked all the boxes and they still weren’t unlocking and LET ME TELL YOU they were VERY happy to help after that. They sent a request to unlock, told me it would be 24 hours, I called back 48 hours later and they said it could take 72 hours, and on the third day my phone was unlocked.
We shouldn’t even have to go through all that to unlock a device, but here we are.
Contact t-force on Twitter.
They're likely the best option to get this resolved.
I contacted T Force on Facebook, she’s the one who said there’s nothing they can do but wait for Apple.
So I contacted Apple who said it’s up to T Mobile.
They're both kinda right. Apple does the actual unlocking, at the request of T-Mobile. Apple won't do it without T-Mo's directive, and T-Mo can only wait for Apple after they've requested the unlock.
Find a friend with at&t. Borrow their sim. Pop it in. If your phone is unlocked, the phone will register the sim card
Yeah, my Galaxy Tab S4 has been paid off for like 3 years, and I still can't get a working unlock code for it.
They gave me the same code 3 times which didn't work and now I need an MCK code, which nobody can (or will) give me.
Adding what worked for me here from switching to T-Mobile to Verizon. T-Mobile Unlocked the phone, verizon kept saying it's locked and couldn't get esim working. Basically anyone you talk to with on these phone companies don't know what they are talking about and will just make shit up - it seems like the esim is supper buggy and sucks.
I reset network settings, deteled esims, and factory reset my phone (didn't fix the problem) - which by the way make sure your email 2 factor authentication is turned OFF before doing this or you could permanently lose access to your email!
What did work was downloading the My Verizon App on my phone I was trying to activate, and went through the esim activation steps on there and it worked immediatley. There must be some kind of carrier firmware that the people on the phone or in store can't put on your phone, but the app was able to switch the esim from t-mobile to verizon.
Hope this helps someone!
Ok adding some comments to this thread since my unlock was finally complete. After many calls to T-mobile, Spectrum (carrier that I was being transferred) and Apple here is what you need to know.
Before unlock you IPhone and going to another carrier be sure you paid the Phone off, pay any remaining balance in you T-mobile account .
Request the transfer PIN, this will be needed to transfer your lines/number to another carrier. (After generated this is good for a few days like 5 days I think).
If your IPhone after those steps is still shown as Block (check General —> About —> Carrier Lock: No Sim restrictions, if show something else is still locked) probably was because your received a replacement by Apple for your Apple Care or some other warranty and when T-Mobile tried to unlock your IPhone the request was sent but using your original IMEI and not the one you receive the replacement. So T-mobile must submit a case to Apple support indicating that your new IMEI needs to be unlocked since the balance was paid off and you met all the criteria.
After 3 days that case was created my IPhone was finally unlocked and was able to activate my number with the new carrier 😤📲📱
Does anyone know the policy on Windows phones ? Do you have to call care, is there any other way to unlock? Thanks.
It's a pre-android phone that I got with contract back in 2009. Can I really just call them and have it unlocked even if I'm no longer a customer? Thanks
Where/how are you planning to use this thing? GSM/EDGE would work in some places in the world, but networks are decommissioning their non LTE/5G networks as fast as they can without leaving their customers in the lurch.
I actually don't know because I won't be using it. It got internet back in the day, but that was 3G at the most.
call em up and see if they can unlock it.
Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. They said they would email me an unlock code and that it might take a week to arrive for some unknown reason.
Probably had to contact manufacturer for the code. It happens with older phones
A week is a bit extreme. They usually email it before you get off the phone.
If it's Android, you should be able to do it through the T-Mobile device unlock app (will need an active T-Mobile sim card to do this). If that doesn't work, or it's an iPhone, you'll have to call care to request an unlock
If I pay off a T mobile bought phone does it unlock itself to allow carrier change ?
I paid off my phone last month. Here is the web page that explains the Unlock Policy and how to manually unlock if the automatic unlock didn't happen or isn't available for your phone.
https://www.t-mobile.com/responsibility/consumer-info/policies/sim-unlock-policy
my pixel 6 unlocked itself after 40 days of service. edit: iirc
Most Androids either have a Device Unlock app or network unlock setting under network connections. Apple devices require you to contact care to unlock.
Recently it changed to proactive unlocks for Apple devices. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ If they don't automatically unlock you would contact care.
Thank you
Usually, but still has to be on the T-Mobile network for 40 days.
Trying to switch over to mint mobile. It won't allow me to save a new network access point.
You shouldn't need to unlock the phone for it to work on mint as they use T-Mobile towers. But only calling customer service will get them to push the unlock through.
Despite the overwhelming abundance of information available online about this, have you actually tried contact T-Mobile about this first rather than strangers who can’t do it for you?
I think it's to late at night to call tmobile for help. Will they help me? I figured they would tell me to get lost. I've been in contact with mint and they have done everything they can on their end.
Do you have a link that could help me? I've tried looking online.
There is no self-submission portal. You need to contact them directly.
Is it paid in full? Try the t-mobile app
Ok thank you
Just for future reference, for questions like this, you really need to put it more information. Like if the phone was yours originally or if it was paid off completely.
On eBay the seller said they cannot unlock the phone as they are not the original owner but can I still pay a third party supplier for the code? Btw I'm in Canada with Rogers.
I know apple products usually needs the original owner to remove the ownership off the phone but this is a Motorola, so can can I unlock it via a third party?
Thank you, much appreciated.
Since it's a T-Mobile Motorola phone, does the phone have the T-Mobile unlock app? If it came with the app, some 3rd party unlockers sell a service that allows you to use that app to unlock.
Interesting. Do you know if that is a for sure thing or case by case? Thank you.
It should work, as long as the phone in this case Moto Z Play came with the T-Mobile unlock app on it. One way to find out would be to reset the phone to factory defaults and see if the app is pre-installed. If it is, then you can search for the 3rd party service that allows you to unlock using the app. Some 3rd parties will even refund your money if the unlock fails.
What phone is it?
Moto z play. And thank you everyone!
Z2 Force*
Tmo never sold the z2 play
It's almost certainly stolen. Unlocking will be pointless because the ESN will also have been banned.
No
What else can I do? I keep calling them and they keep telling me it's gonna take 24 hours but I'm starting to think they're not even doing anything. I need to give this phone to my wife and she's leaving the country soon so I'm not sure how else I can unlock this phone.
Did you go into Settings and see if Network Unlock is an option?
it gives me an error i can't do anything
It’ll give you an error if it doesn’t have a T-Mobile SIM or it hasn’t been used on an active number for over 40 days.
This. You can temp unlock androids
I paid off my flip 5 and I was able to use settings and network unlock option literally within two minutes. Can you verify if you did paid payment towards device eip?
Yep, Even T-mobile said my device is paid off but i don't think they know how to fix my problem.
Did you buy and financed through T-Mobile or bought a locked variant elsewhere (Samsung/Best Buy)?
Did you make sure you dont have sim swap block on? If you call and ask for a manager you might get somewhere tbh i know people hate doing it but you have to sometimes with T-Mobile if you are getting the run around which you totally are.
Contact t force via Twitter they have unlocked tmo locked phones not even purchased by me no issue as long as it was paid off they just opened up a case and in like 3 days they automatically unlock them I did it with a S22 Ultra and a iphone 13.
Have you tried turning the phone off for a bit? That did the trick on one of my phones.
Typically policy is to have device paid off AND on an active TMobile sim for 40+ days in order to unlock.
But support can override the latter as long as there's an active T-Mobile Sim in the phone for at least a day.
