TL;DR
Understanding Limit Break Mechanics
Limit breaks in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are divided into two types: kill-specific and use-specific. To unlock the first limit break on levels 1-3, you need to defeat a certain number of enemies with a particular character. The second limit break on each level is unlocked by using the first limit break a set number of times [3:1],
[5:2]. This means that for each character, you will need to actively engage them in battles and ensure they deliver the final blow to enemies to progress through their limit break levels.
Grinding Locations and Strategies
The Mythril Mines are frequently recommended as an optimal location for grinding kills due to the high number of enemy encounters per battle [3:1],
[5:2]. Another suggested area is the world map between the Mythril Mines and Junon, where players can encounter large groups of enemies
[5:3]. Using abilities like "Matra Magic" or "Slash-All" materia can help expedite this process by dealing damage to multiple enemies at once, allowing for quicker accumulation of kills.
Character-Specific Considerations
Certain characters, such as Cait Sith and Vincent, have unique requirements for unlocking their limit breaks. For example, Vincent's limit breaks up to level 3 are learned through kills, but his level 4 limit break requires finding a specific item [5:5]. Cait Sith's limit breaks involve gaining kills to unlock different slots
[5:6].
Optional Nature of Limit Breaks
It's important to note that unlocking all limit breaks is optional and not necessary to complete the game. However, having access to higher-level limit breaks can make boss battles significantly easier [4:1],
[4:2]. Players who prefer to experience the game without extensive grinding can still progress through the story and enjoy the challenge of earning limit breaks naturally over time.
I'll say this, F that last level in hard difficulty with unskippable cutscenes, F those Top Secrets battles both main game and DLC and F that Immaculate. Those battles were so stressful. But a very good game.
Now I am hearing that Rebirth is way grindier and way harder in every aspect... I think I am fine not attempting that one.
Congratulations, Rebirth is easier than remake 😅😅.
I also got the platinum for Remake and I'm currently working on Rebirth — what makes you think Rebirth is easy?
Don’t think so honestly. Rebirth is over double the time, has far more minigames where some you have to play basically perfect. Plus the vr battles are way harder than remake. I still loved doing it though
I have the decks of both, believe me Remake is a joke compared to Rebirth with the VR fights, even the DLC boss is simpler
Working on this now, on chapter 5 hard mode, it’s kind of a fun challenge so far. Congrats!
Hard mode is not that hard tbh, only Chapter 18 gets frustrating because it consist in 2 long battles, you mess it up at the end of the first one and you are going to go all the way back with all the unskippable cutscenes. The really hard ones are the 3 vs top secrets and another boss you unlock by playing the dlc.
How did you do the score attack thing for Yuffie? I tried it for ages and didn't get it.
What do you mean? The boxes challenge?
Yeah. I'd always get to the very end and fail.
I hear ya! I'm not trying either of them, congratulations to you for even getting this one. I love final fantasy games, always have. I've played them all, but they are known for some brutally hard trophy lists. I'm looking at you ff9 and ff10, lol.
Oh, I don't think there is a harder trophy than jumping the rope I don't know how many times in a row, this game is a cakewalk compared to that one. But yeah, basically the game pushes you to play in a very different way against some of the battles, meaning if you don't have leveled up the materia needed you are going to have to grind or have a very very hard time.
I also have that plat. I thought the hell house on hard was gonna be impossible, but I got really lucky and beated first try, maybe the dragon shit was difficult? But once you have the right set is a walk in the park. 10/10 game imo, the platinum not so much, it’s a grind for real and made me wanted to take a break from the series.
Overall an amazing experience, some trophies were more tedious than difficult imo, especially mini games.
Well done, I’m currently on this. Just the Cloud & Zack and Cloud & Sephiroth combat simulations to do and i’m done!
Thx and good luck with the last challenges 😎
Yea agree, I try to like the story changes but I want to wait for part 3 but that a story for another day.
It was tuff plat but Is was fun.
Congrats ‼️
Can’t wait for part 3!
Thx!
Congratulations this one is on my list.
Thx, you surely have something to look forward to 👀
This game has 61 trophies: 54 bronze, 5 silver, 1 gold, and a platinum.
They are very hard (8/10) and take 150 - 200 hours to complete.

I am trying to get all the limit breaks to get all the achievements, anyone got tips for this?
Limit breaks are divided into 2 types. Kill specific and use specific. To get the first limit on level 1-3 you need to kill a certain amount of enemies.
The best place is in the mythril mines just before you exit the door on the top middle. You can fight enemies in groups of 5+. The party member who deals the killing blow will get credit for the limit kill count. You can use the slash all materia to make it faster something that does aoe.
To learn the second break from 1-3 you need to use first break a certain number times. The best way to do this is to increase the damage dealt to your character so their limit bar increases. Putting them in the front row with cover materia will help. You can also use a hyper item to give them fury. If you have Aeriths level 2 break fury brand she can force limit break activations on allies too.
Level 4 breaks are special items that you need to find. They can only be learned when you have all previous breaks from levels 1-3.
I recommend using a guide like jegged.com to help finding them if you don't want to search yourself.
Okay, you are a fricken legend. I got 5 level 4 limit breaks in 35 minutes thanks to those tips.
No problem
Thanks for the detailed response. This helps a lot.
For the kill specific ones try to farm areas that give you a lot enemies at once. The area around the chocobo farm is pretty decent. I'm sure there are other areas but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Good luck.
Jegged’s FF7 guide
Just playing the ps1 version. I saw a tip online you can grind limit breaks. But for me its taking so long and i just want to go forward in the game.

Do i have to get all limit breaks with all characters? Or am i going to have a hard time to complete it without those?
You don't have to get any of them, but they will definitely make the game easier when fighting bosses. The later LB are really strong
You don't need to unlock them all. It's entirely optional.
Carry on with the game - you'll unlock most of them just by playing through normally. It's a good idea to switch your party members around so they all get a go. If anything, grinding to get them all early might spoil the fun of earning them later on.
So im running through the game and im on Disc 2 rn. Ive got XIII's and Yuffie's Level 4 Limit Break items but the my issue is their Limit Breaks are at Levels 2 and 1 respectively. So how in the world do i train Limit Break levels?
So, for each of the first 3 limit break levels, you have to get 2 unlocked for each level. Generally, for the first skill in each level, you need to use the skill x number of times (usually 8, I think) to unlock the second skill.
After the second skill unlocks, you usually need to kill around 80 enemies with that character.
The best place to grind for kills is the mythril mines in the north room. From where the zolom entrance is, go left a screen and then up one. Most of the mobs should average 4-5 enemies per encounter.
After your x number of kills, the next level limit break unlocks (1,2,3). You need to manually change the limit break level and select the new one in the main menu. Then it's back to using the skill x times to unlock 2nd skill and killing x enemies to move to next level.
Level 4 limit breaks are different. You have to have all of your level 3 limit breaks unlocked, but additionally, you need to have their limit break item to teach it to them. Those are found in different locations throughout the game, although it's usually late game for most of those with the exception being Aerith.
I hope this helps, but also check out https://jegged.com/Games/Final-Fantasy-VII/Limit-Breaks/ for more in-depth info for each of your characters.
Awesome thanks
To train up a limit level you have to find a spot with lots of groups of easy enemies and stack up kills, I usually put matra magic enemy skill on whoever I want to level up and fight in the mythril mines and in the world map between there and Junon. Usually you can one shot the whole group.
To get the second limit break for each level you want to give some hypers and go somewhere where there’s some tougher enemies that do damage so you can get I think eight limit breaks to unlock those second ones.
Each level has 2 limit breaks... you gain the 2nd by using the first X amounts of times. You gain new level limit breaks by defeating X amount of enemies with that character.
For instance, Cloud starts with Braver, you use that enough times and get Cross Slash. You use Cloud to defeat something like 75 enemies and you unlock level 2 limit breaks with Blade Beam, you use Blade Beam X amount of times to get Climhazzard. You thrn use Cloud to defeat X amount of enemies and you'll unlock Level 3 limit breaks and Meteorrain, use Meteorrain X times to get Finishing Touch.
Use the Omnislash item to then unlock Level 4 limit break, Omnislash.
It's the same for each character, the only difference is how you acquire the Level 4 limit break item.
The only exceptions being Cait Sith and Vincent.
Yes, Vincent just needs to kill to learn his limit breaks up to level 3, then need to find the item to learn his 4th.
And cait sith just needs kills to get the slots, I think he also needs to gain more kills to unlock the cait sith reels but im not sure if that's right.
Make sure you have at least 4-5 of each elemental materia and max out all your materias.
As for the minigames, there are plenty of guides online of how to cheese the auto battlers, or how to perform well on Cactuar Crush. Never found the situps/gym stuff to be difficult, I'm a rhythm gamer so it kinda is like that.
Any other tips leave a comment and I'll answer as best as I can!
"Didnt find the situps hard " the one thing i was gonna ask about i completly dropped the game cause i want to get that done and out so no tips huh 🫠
I found it easier to just remember the pattern and I closed my eyes. It slowly speeds up to tolerate faster inputs so just start slow and gradually build it up....count it like you would count out a song like 1, 2, 3, 4. Just practice the pattern before you even start the game. Get your finger used to the motion and pattern they have to do. You got it brother!!!!
Tip I have to give is turn off the in game music. Makes it so much easier to count/keep Rhythm. Took me only a couple of tries after doing this 👍
For real! If it wasn’t for his guides, getting the plat would’ve torn my sanity to shreds!
I just have the battle sim left. Other than following the Optinoob stuff, any recommendations?
If all you have is the battle sim stuff then not really as I followed his guides. One thing you'll find is you.canr replicate his strats but sometimes things happen so don't follow them so rigidly and if things go off program, to remember the strat and just keep going. For the battle sims, if you follow his guides, for the Zack/Cloud fight, on round 9 and 10, don't get caught out so much by attacking. The main damage comes from the magic so trying to always hit them can and will get you killed. Focus more on blocking in Prime Mode as it gives you a ton of atb, and only get Berserk status when you're ready to throw some lvl3 magic. If this doesn't make sense it will if you watch his videos.
You got it, just take your time and remember there's no timer for the fights, take it slow and keep your fundamentals in order, its actually not so bad.
Yeah I've had a little look so I'm getting what you're saying.
Keep it flexible, stay patient, win. I shall do my best! Thanks for the heads up
Congratulations on the plat! 😁
Couldn't agree more with your title. Got the Platinum last year, and the combat simulator at the end is just BS. Congratulations on the Platinum :)
I’m playing the OG for the first time on switch and was just wondering if there was an ideal “routine” of sorts when it comes to using each character for a certain amount of time to build up limit break uses/enemies defeated? I feel like I’m swapping between characters fairly often, but should I be keeping them in my party for a longer period of time? Hope this question makes sense lol
Give everyone the fury status effect and everyone's limit should raise faster/more when they get hit from enemies.
Can't remember what the specific item is called, but you can buy it in about every item shop.
Hyper is the one, I like to keep a stock in case I get saddened or randomly die.
Especially for Vincent and Cloud. They both seem to get depressed at everything.^/s
My method.
Get Enemy Skill materia.
Get Mantra Magic for it (enemy encountered right after you leave midgar)
Mythril Mines, last area (hanging vine) go north, run about, usually encounter groups of 3-5, use the materia.
Thats how I farmed kills for the limit unlocks.
So for the majority of the game would you suggest simply playing who I like until I feel the need to grind the limit unlocks I don’t have?
Pretty much, you will unlock the vast majority by just playing. And then you can mop up any others you want really.
I finally got to these, after some months of having the game on hold after beating it, characters and most materia pretty much maxed out. Holy crap are they hard, but I'm really enjoying them. I'm not using any guide and just trying to figure them out on my own. I've already managed to complete Tifa's and Cloud's and they've been some of the most difficult fights I've done in any video game but the way they require you to come up with strategies for each round and figure out a build that will work for all of them is really great. I like that the enemies are so different and force you to change your playstyle, I think these are the fights that make you master the combat with each character and make you explore how all of their abilities work.
My slight complaint about the Rulers of the Outer Worlds and Bonds of Friendship in particular is how long they take. An endurance run is OK I guess but both can take upwards of 30 mins even if you know how to perfect guard and be very efficient with the stagger bars.
So in the end while I did manage to power through with a "sensible" build meant to block, heal and be able to hit hard physically, after dying in the very last battles like 5x (especially Odin, !%#!$ I blocked everything for 5 minutes straight then the very last few hits he lands something and I'm done) I just got burned out of it and took an overpowered magic build instead, which then trivialized things - granted, it trivialized things because I could perfect guard up until the point I could cast Aeroga and recover all my HP/MP while staggering the opponent. The important part is I was done in like 10 mins. So it's not only about mastering combat (it certainly is, don't get me wrong), but it's also very much about endurance, unless you completely break the materia system with duplicates paired to support materia.
In that regard I've also loved the solo challenges more in the end because they allowed me to play the character mechanics more so than the materia system or limit siphon shenanigans, and I hope they bring more of that for part 3.
I really think the last Brutal Challenge is the one that's supposed to be done last. If you keep doing what you're doing, you're going to learn a lot about every character, all the materia and all the possible tactics and strategies you can use.
I really feel like the intended way to do it is to do all of the Brutals up to Rulers, then do all of the Legendaries, then do Rulers with everything you've learned from the rest of the game. It's extremely hard. Doable without guides and help with strategies if you really want to, but I never did that. I did all of the Legendaries with no guides, but Rulers was too much without some sort of help.
I was able to finish legendary bouts without using guides but I did research battle mechanics for each character since they were hard to thoroughly understand thru in game tutorials.
I cheesed thru hellions intonement, seventh seal and rulers before i did legendary but I plan to at some point revisit them with my own build.
I think doing the legendary has helped me alot with materia and battle mechanics(blocks, synergies, each individual characters nuances) as well as how to exploit enemy weaknesses that I should be theoretically able to do hellions and seventh seal with only moderate difficulty and then rulers with high difficulty
Makes sense, I'll probably wait until beating the game on hard mode before completing the Brutal, the first one wasn't too bad, took me a couple tries, but I know they get crazy difficult.
They're doable before Hard mode. I did them as my last thing for the Platinum, after Hard Mode, on PS5. Honestly they felt much more of a slog when I knew they were the last thing I had to do.
I've just finished them again on PC after the end of Normal mode and it's made Hard Mode feel much more of a breeze. Not because of the rewards, but because I can just chill through the game safe in the knowledge that there isn't some disgraceful challenges waiting for me after it haha.
Well brutal challenges have some easy build like yuffie chesse , or tifa uppercut or something i cant remember after plat this game. On the other last two legendary challenges is hard because you cant cheese with only 2 char. And some easy build still require lot of practice and hope rng not fuck you up.
It's fun until you get to the last Brutal Challenge which is the hardest thing in any video game ever. You won't be able to complete it without looking up guides on YouTube, and even then it's still very overwhelming and time consuming.
I still have a ways to go so we'll see, I don't mind doing challenge fights over and over, the two I've beaten must have taken me over a hundred attempts between them.
Don't let people tell you it's not possible without a guide, that's just a wild thing to say. It's definitely very hard but if you have the patience you can do it. One thing i'd recommend if you're doing it without guides is to record and rewatch every time you die to see what you did wrong and what you could do better next time. On PC there's things like Medal or shadowplay to clip the last 5 minutes of gameplay, PS might have something similar. This is one of the best ways to improve your skill quickly
Technically I didn't use a guide, but I did have to google how to handle Seph's shadow chains because I thought I tried everything but nothing was working. Other than that gimmick, it's really not that hard once you get the hang of it. Beat it first play through without any guides, with the exception of a quick google answer
I hate that I slept on Prime Mode until I got to the challenges. It’s actually very good and definitely central to playing Cloud in the challenges.
Tifa , cloud, aerith and yuffie is op on they own way.
Cloud can be op with prime mode magic build or pure strength build
tifa well she is op if you can utilize all her tool and skill
aerith best magic caster in the game with genji gloove make her become walking nuke.
Yuffie well it yuffie
I waited almost 5 years after release to play this and I wasn’t disappointed. 90 hours enjoyably spent, especially after playing both OG FF7 and Crisis Core last year. I screamed at my TV more than once while attempting Yuffie and Sonon vs Top Secrets. After that, I had a surprisingly easy time with Weiss.
I’m going back to PS3 to platinum a few old games, but I’m watching Rebirth, just waiting for it to go on sale again so I can jump back into this world. I don’t know if I have it in my to go earn Rebirth’s platinum but I’ll sure as hell try, and I’ll be ready for Part 3 at launch.
I’m stuck with the Yuffie vs Top Secret fight for two days now. Which guide did you follow?
https://youtu.be/50XJg68HJMw?si=AcM3gpVceZddRKT3
I tried to use a pure aggression no healing approach but I couldn’t execute that strategy consistently. A safe setup suits my lack of skill much better.
I just beat it after complaining here 😅 that was the hardest fight. My thumbs are all sore now
I'm interested in the series and this is free on ps+, do you think it's a good place to start the series?
It’s got a great combat system, characters and world, so the answer could be yes. But I always recommend that people play the original FF7 before this. Without spoiling anything, Remake is kind of a misnomer for this game. The story that FF7 Remake tells is more like a sequel than an actual 1-to-1 retelling of the original story. If you’re at all interested in turn-based JRPGs and can handle the PS1 graphics, then you should play OG FF7 before you play FF7 Remake. I think having that context will make the overall story more interesting to you, although my nostalgia for the original certainly plays a role in my recommendation.
I’m never sure if this whole spiel actually helps anyone make a decision. You have free access to the game so go ahead and give it a try. If you get a few hours in and get curious about the original, then pick that up too, I think it’s usually $16 and well worth it at that price. Either way, I hope you find an entry point to Final Fantasy that works for you! There are also a free demoes of FF14 (the MMO) and FF16.
Thank you so much, I will give it a try then! :) appreciate the in-depth response!
Congratulations🔥
FF7 OG is my favorite game of all time and I have a plat for rebirth but getting the plat is brutal. Good luck🏆
I gave up on this coz my power went out in the middle of the Pride and Joy fight and I didn't save, so ive gotta go back and do some combat challenges again.
Congrats! Now get ready for Rebirth.. and good luck!
The Ranking (as of Feb 2025):
includes sequels & remakes, but not spinoffs
EDIT: I updated the NES & SNES titles with data from Nintendo Life, since Metacritic doesn't have scores for the original versions. I also averaged the expansions for 14, which puts it in a more fitting spot.
What is a Blended Metascore?
Well, I sort of made up my own system using the data posted on Metacritic (and sometimes supplementing with Nintendo Life scores for older games which do not appear on MC). I was not satisfied with the rankings from the critic score only, and feel that factoring in the user score as well lands closer to broad public opinion. Thus I figured the best way to rank series properly was to get the average figure after factoring in both of them, across platforms and different releases, which the site usually separates. Thus this "Blended" Metascore includes both critic & user scores together (with a bit of weighting) and factors in both the original release and the latest release to account for not only legacy, but also the version most people will be playing today, and sentiment change over time. I rounded the averages to the first decimal place, and ties are broken by number of scores submitted (votes). I did not account for DLC if it was scored separately on Metacritic; i.e. if it was not part of a "Definitive Edition" or equivalent release. I made an exception for 14 due to the nature of the game and since it is very dependent on the expansions. 11 didn't have complete data for them, and what is available wasn't far off the base's score, so I left it.
As this is a compilation of many gamers' tastes, it may not reflect your particular view, but rather shows general opinion. Personally, I would have swapped FF 12 with FF 8 in their positions, but this post is not my opinion, but based on scoring data and a particular methodology.
What do you think? Does it line up with your expectations? I have found while ranking different series, I am much more satisfied with this than using the traditional Metacritic score alone.
This seems about right from general consensus I’ve seen. 16 will probably the most divisive. It’s personally my favorite FF of all time but I know it has many haters and also people who really enjoyed it. But ofc no one is going to agree 100%. Reviews are all subjective at the end of the day
16 is absolutely a top game, but the worst RPG in the series. That's how I've decided I feel about it.
Top 3 or 4 game in the series for me, that unfortunately has a combat style I'm just never going to be able to interact with off of baby easy mode.
Lmfao. Imagine apparently loving JRPGs enough to subscribe here, and then anointing the one FF to eschew all actual JRPG elements to appease everyone BUT jrpg lovers............. as your all time favorite.
I want out of this alternate reality we have been in so badly.
I mean, there are a large amount of people who play JRPGs for the story and presentation bc there isn't any really any genre outside of JRPGs that hits the same type of story beats and overall tone.
When you consider that JRPGs throughout history HAVE continuously lowered the RPG mechanics (not as much choice & consequence vs CRPGs, auto stat allocation, better items just being outright stat boosts, simplified skills trees, auto battle systems, etc), I can see the leap in logic that the team had to reduce what they thought was filler for a lot of people who just want to hop into these games for the storyline and world traversal.
While I do think FF16 went a bit far in that regard, there aren't too many JRPGs in general where I've had to put actual thought into the RPG mechanics. Recently played Tales of Arise and Berseria, and both of them were just fairly generic as far as progression went, to the point where if the mechanics were missing I don't think I would have noticed. In the last 5 years or so I went through FF7 and 10, and outside of optional content, you really don't have to spend much time in the sphere grid/materia systems. Just following natural progression and spamming ATK/Heal for most battles got you through.
Only games I can think of where I actually had to interact with RPG mechanics to progress would be SRPGs like Tactics Ogre, or SMT3 (this is out of my own personal list recently). Maybe Xenoblade 3 as well with all the jobs and mix/matching them.
I think the only games that REALLY keep the spirit alive in that aspect are SRPGs, dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, and CRPGs like Pathfinder/Baldur's Gate/Atom RPG/Pillars/etc.
I belive that ff16 had alot of potential. Good storytelling, good lore, very good music, Incredible cinematics and more mature than other games of the same franchise.
But it is in my opinion mostly wasted, especially for a final fantasy. It has no companions, no elemental types, very little strategy, incredibly bad rpg elements that i belive they could be deleted from the game to make it better. The sidequests are very boring to play, and often they feel mandatory for the main story (because the main story itaelf has side quests as story quests). I did not hate the game, but felt very frustrated by the rollercoaster of High highs and Low Lows.
FF6 at spot 7 is egregious.
6 is the only FF game that's often on a list with the greatest games of all time. Really should have the number 1 spot.
In lots of recent poll, its often beaten by FFVII and FFX
6 is probably cited most often, but you generally see 7, 9, and Tactics listed among the greatest games of all time. Even not including Tactics, there are tons of people who still prefer 7 or 9 to 6; it’s not consensus at all.
Having said that, this list serves very little functional purpose in terms of actually ranking FF games, and your overall point is that 6 is under games it has no right being under, and for that you’re obviously right. Using metascore for games before online reviews is generally wildly innacurate, let alone the fact that game reviewers just suck in general.
FF16 in the top 5, LMAO JRPG sub in shambles 🤣
It also doesn't help that FF6's GBA remake has some controversial sprite choices and the Pixel remasters aren't much better which likely prompted older gamers who loved the SNES release to rate lower.
C'mon guys! No way FF13 is worse than FF1 and FF4:The After Years
It is worse than FF1 for sure that game deserve a much better score but I agree that it is hard to say it is worse than FF 4: After Years I say they deserve a tie.
