How to Unlock Expert Mode in Cuphead

TL;DR To unlock Expert mode in Cuphead, you must complete the game by defeating the final boss, the Devil, on Regular difficulty. Once unlocked, Expert mode can be selected for each boss battle.

Unlocking Expert Mode

Expert mode in Cuphead is unlocked by beating the entire game, which includes defeating every boss on Regular difficulty [1:1][3:1]. This means you need to reach and defeat the Devil, the final boss, to access the Expert difficulty level [4:1].

Accessing Expert Mode

Once Expert mode is unlocked, it can be accessed from your completed save file. You do not need to start a new game; simply return to the bosses and select Expert difficulty before each battle [2:1][5:1]. Note that Expert mode will only be available in the save file where you completed the game [2:2].

Completion and Trophies

For players aiming to achieve the 'beat the game on expert' trophy, you can replay all bosses on Expert mode from your finished world without restarting the whole game [5:1]. To reach 200% completion, you need to defeat every boss on Expert mode [5:2]. While S ranks are not required for completing the game on Expert, obtaining one S rank is necessary for a specific trophy [5:3].

There's no need to start a new save, just go back to the bosses and there will be an 'expert' difficulty.

Yes, you have to beat him. Until every boss including the devil is beaten, no expert. The game makes you earn it.

I think you can only play expert once you've completed it on normal

47 upvotes on reddit
Okto481 · 3 months ago

Yep, Expert mode is unlocked by defeating the Devil, who requires beating every boss in the game on Normal. Unfortunately, it also invalidates the several hours I spent trying to A+ all of the bosses, because they'll just get overriden by S rank on Round 2

To play in expert mode, you first have to finish it on normal difficulty. Considering how complicated several bosses are in expert, it will be good to start in the most common way, so you will have more practice and get an idea of how each level works.

from your finished world. Expert difficulty dont even exist in other saves. You'll get past %100 completion every boss you defeat in expert mode and eventually you'll be at %200 completion where you complete the game in expert.

Just beat the bosses by selecting expert before each match. You can make them in the order you want

Also a tip, you do NOT need to get S ranks on all of them. Just simply beat them all on expert.

You do need to get one S rank to get that specific trophy though.

How hard is expert mode?

Posted by happyfugu · in r/Cuphead · 4 years ago

I guess I should just try and probably will, but I’m curious what my ~14 hour regular mode completion time means after just beating the devil this morning. (He was tough! Took me a couple hours.)

Am I kind of average skill based on that? Is expert mode achievable you think with another 10-20 hours at it? I realize it isn’t a science but trying to get a sense of if it’s achievable for normal people with reasonable time like me, or more for speed runners and very good reflex players.

Imo expert isn’t that much harder overall. It depends on the boss though.

Ok cool I’ll give a boss or two a shot at least and see how I fare.

Expert mode is very difficult. I had to change my strategy on every boss to compensate for the increased difficulty. That time frame is doable, but be prepared to be humbled.

happyfugu · OP · 4 years ago

Ok! Yeah I’ll just have to try, I guess I was wondering if I should resist to feel more satisfied with my regular clear but too tempting to try lol.

This happens because you selected Expert on a save that has it unlocked and when you go back to the title screen and play a new save, that Expert selection is stored when going into a fresh file or a file that doesn't have Expert unlocked yet.

How to unlock expert mode without completing the main game on PC

Posted by ShiningConcepts · in r/Cuphead · 6 years ago

There's an easy way to make expert mode available without having already completed the game. Maybe it's my OCD, but I prefer to do an expert playthrough on a different save file. I want to recollect all the coins to get that experience, and manually fill up the list as I play (rather than just update checkmarks to stars). I want the two save files to represent two different playthroughs.

Simply open your save file in a plaintext editor, do a ctrl+f for _isHardModeAvailable and you should see "_isHardModeAvailable":false. Simply change the word false to true (be careful to only change that, don't change anything that comes before or after the word false). Just save the editor and you can now play the game on expert mode right away! :)

On Steam at least, the save file is located in C:\Users\(your account)\AppData\Roaming\Cuphead.

Credit to this commenter for pointing this out to me!

There is a way without finishing a new file, you do have to have expert mode unlocked on a seperate file, what you said. On said completed file, select expert mode and beat a boss, then exit to the new file, do not touch anything when you select a boss and you should have expert mode. This is called the fresh expert glitch

Expert Mode is a Pile of Shit

Posted by Tantalus-- · in r/Cuphead · 1 year ago

I finished the game a couple days ago on regular mode and loved it, thought everything about it was pretty good and since everything was pretty manageable on regular, I figured I'd go for the platinum. I start out with the expert mode trophy and after doing all bosses except the ones on isle 1, I can confidently say that expert is a lousy boring mess. It absolutely sucks and feels like shit to play. Now I understand the difficulty is increased and it is supposed to be harder, obviously, but this is truly pathetic. The amount of spam and boring shit they added to these fights makes it feel like I'm bashing my head into a brick wall every second. Its incredibly disappointed as I did enjoy the regular game, but expert is just a master class embarrassment from the devs in game design. Seriously I have no desire to touch this game ever again once I am done with this boring ass mode except to play the dlc on regular mode. If I wanna challenge ill go elsewhere to better made games that make challenge fun and rewarding, something that cuphead just isn't.

TLDR: Spam and bs nonstop is lousy and boring to play. Stop the dick riding and go play a good challenging game like Hotline Miami.

Expert mode is better. It feels like they made Expert and balanced it perfectly, then removed attacks to make Normal mode.

Sounds like you need to play more! It feels impossible when you start but I managed to grind my way to beating it all on Expert and it was super satisfying.

Found a glitch that allows expert early

I did this by having expert mode selected for a boss on an old save, loading a new one (did this on co op but I don’t think that’s related), then when the choices simple or regular came up neither were red and I clicked A and suddenly I fight a much more difficult root pack then normal, then I see the flag golden cuphead and check the list for it to be a star and I’m js like “what the fuck-“

How to unlock expert mode in cuphead

To unlock Expert Mode in Cuphead, follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Game: First, you need to finish the game on Normal difficulty. This means defeating all bosses and completing all levels.

  2. Access the Main Menu: After completing the game, return to the main menu.

  3. Select the Expert Mode Option: Once you’re back at the main menu, you should see an option for Expert Mode. Select it to enable this more challenging difficulty.

Key Considerations:

  • Increased Difficulty: Expert Mode features tougher versions of all bosses, with new attack patterns and increased health. Be prepared for a more challenging experience.

  • Practice Makes Perfect: If you find Expert Mode too difficult, consider practicing on Normal difficulty to master the bosses and their patterns before attempting Expert Mode.

  • Co-op Play: If you're playing with a friend, teamwork can make Expert Mode more manageable. Coordinate your attacks and revive each other when needed.

Takeaway: Unlocking Expert Mode adds a new layer of challenge to Cuphead, perfect for players looking for a test of skill. Make sure you're comfortable with the game mechanics before diving in!
