How to Unlock the Mine in Stardew Valley

TL;DR The mine in Stardew Valley becomes accessible on the 5th day of Spring. You will receive a letter from Joja Corp notifying you that the debris blocking the entrance has been cleared [2:2][3:2].

Location and Access

To find the mine, head north past Robin's house and then east towards the mountain area. You'll cross a thin bridge and see a door in the mountain, which is the entrance to the mine [2:1]. The entrance is marked by a ladder going down, not a rock or boulder [1:1][5:2].

Common Misunderstandings

Many players initially confuse the farm cave with the actual mine. The farm cave is where Demetrius will later offer you a choice between fruit bats or mushrooms for foraging [4:2]. The mine itself is located in the mountain area and opens automatically after a few days into the game [4:5].

Potential Issues

If you're experiencing issues accessing the mine beyond the expected timeline, it might be due to a bug. Normally, the mine should be accessible starting from the 5th day of Spring [5:1]. Make sure you have received the notification from Joja Corp about the debris being cleared.

Gameplay Tips

Once the mine is unlocked, you'll receive your first sword through a cutscene as you enter [2:2]. Remember that the pickaxe only works on rocks within the mine, not on the bare ground [4:10]. If you're new to the game, take your time exploring and enjoy the process of learning how everything works. The Stardew Valley wiki and community forums are great resources if you get stuck [4:7].

Unlocking mine and furnace

ORIGINAL POST

Need a bit of help! I'm playing on Switch and I'm in Summer Year 1. I seem to be in a catch 22 situation, I can't unlock the mine as there is a rock blocking it and my pickaxe isn't high enough level to break it (I get "your pickaxe isn't strong enough to break this yet") when I hit it. But my understanding is that I need to mine in order to unlock the furnace so that I can upgrade my tools....

Throwing copper on the ground and picking it up doesn't seem to work on the Switch to unlock the furnace as there isn't an option (as far as I can tell) to drop and item, only trash it.

Any help appreciated!

Thank you!

That passage on the right is not into the mine. The way into the mine is the ladder going down, the way to the right is where dwarf is and he’s kind of a later character to unlock.

The mines become accessible after three days or so in-game. If you go up by Robin's house, keep going to the right and upwards. There's a thin bridge and a door in the mountain, that's the mine.

that's a resource cave! Demetrius will stop by and ask if you want fruit bats or mushrooms to get foragables in that cave, the mines that open on day 5 are where you do all the walkthroughs

Since this area is so small, it would be nice if a future update could just show it as part of the farm map rather than a different screen to load into, just a rock wall that fades away to reveal the cave when you enter.

I also think it's where the door to the 1.6 grandpa secret cave should be, it would make way more sense than off in a random place south of the farm.

The letter is from Joja saying that they've cleared up the landslide they caused. You can find the mines in a cave to the east and across a bridge from Robin's house. (North of town)

If you know which house is Robins, then go there and head east, follow the lake up and cross the wooden bridge and you should see a entrance to a cave. That cave is the mines

Rebuild the bridge or get the mine carts working again. It is a a little cave on the left side of the quarry.

How to get further in the mines?

Posted by plantaires · in r/StardewValley · 6 years ago

Hey there, I’m pretty new to this game (at the end of fall year 1 now) and I just wanted to know how to get further in the mines.

Even if I get there early morning I can really only get to level 15 or so until it becomes too late and I have to go home. Do you do most of it with stairs? Also how to you kill those little bugs that fly at you in the green bit of the mines?

I feel like at this point I should be getting further in them but I just can’t.

Every time you advance 5 levels you can use the elevator in the beginning to return to a level you've been to. Like if you end at 37 one day, the next day you can start at 35.

5 upvotes on reddit
plantaires · OP · 6 years ago

Really? I swear mine only goes to level 5 and that’s it...

0 upvotes on reddit
AmenoSwagiri · 6 years ago

Nope, every 5 levels you go, it unlocks it in the elevator. For reference, I believe there are over 90 floors, can't remember though. You should be able to go to floor 15 in the elevator.

2 upvotes on reddit
_theTenk · 6 years ago

Advancing 15 levels a day seems pretty ok to me.

1 upvotes on reddit
AmenoSwagiri · 6 years ago

They're doing the same first 15 levels every day because they didn't know about the elevator.

4 upvotes on reddit
monamisty · 6 years ago

Use the elevator.

3 upvotes on reddit
solvingtheday · 6 years ago

Okay, so.. first off, in case it needs clarifying, this image shows the elevator highlighted in blue, and the stairs in red. The stairs always only go down to the first level of the mines. The elevator will provide a popup that lets you go down five levels at a time, to the lowest you've been. There are 120 levels in total, and it will go all the way down. Now, once you hit level, say 15, you should see the elevator on that level, the light will turn on, and you'll hear a ding. You've now unlocked that level on your elevator, so if you go up to it at the top and click on it, you should be able to go down to level 15!

As far as getting down faster goes, really most of the time the "fast" methods are only used later in the game, in the harder mine levels. Early game, you just want to keep plucking at it. I'll usually get 10 levels in a day after doing my other chores, but sometimes my luck is bad and it ends up only being 5 levels. Just keep working at it and you'll make it down.

For killing the flying bugs, and also all the other monsters, faster.. assuming that you've completed the quest to get into the Adventurer's Guild, go there and buy the best sword that you can afford. I usually buy the wooden sword as soon as I get the ability to enter. The basic starter sword is TERRIBLE. You'll get better swords as you go along. Some drop from monsters, some are from chests at certain levels in the mines. You'll also get boots at certain chests as well, so keep upgrading those to the ones with better defense and immunity!

I need stardew valley tips

Posted by lunabuug · in r/StardewValley · 3 months ago

I’m only on year two but I feel like I haven’t achieved much. I’ve got a small farm, 3 chickens, two cows and a goat. But I’m not really sure what else to do. I got through all the levels of the mine…. I want to start making my home and farm cute but I don’t know how to work my way up to it or get the resources I need to build all the cute stuff. Any tips on how to grow my life on the farm?

Shed with jam and keg barrels! Focus on getting the greenhouse going for year round options. I like to play stardew slow and not rush it. I talk to the NPCs a lot too that first year and second. Try to get most of the heart events. It’s more of a cozy game for me that way. Once the money starts to roll in then I focus on decorating and upgrading. I feel like I’m not having to grind as much then.

But I always try to upgrade the barns and coops first, then get a shed with artisan products going, and finally upgrading the house. Then once I have the money I need, I can easily plan a cute layout without having to wait as long.

2 upvotes on reddit
vatnvalkyrie · 3 months ago

The first year for me is just getting as much done in the community center as possible and getting friendships going around town. Year 2 you should have the resources to create sprinklers, grow crops in mass, and get your barn and coup maxed out. Year two, marry someone, have a baby, get bulked up on money and resources, and finish the community center.

Also look up how to earn points towards Grandpa’s evaluation. That’ll give you some guidance on what to focus on. You need I think 12 points

I try to get 999 wood and 999 stone, and abt 100 hardwood. That way, you can do whatever you need. Get married! Upgrade ur house! Get that purple cat thing from grandpa's shrine! Upgrade ur house again! Cheat on ur partner by giving flowers to every other marriage candidate (they won't care i sweat)

Just do what feels gud

If this is your first play through it’s okay to just take it slow and learn about the game and the lore. Use the wiki as much as you need.

That being said, if you want to start making money to decorate and buy things you can get some pigs. You can find some ancient fruit seeds and grow them in your greenhouse. Use your seedmaker and make more and more every harvest. While you build your ancient fruit plant supply, go in the mines 80+ and save every fire quartz. Make a bunch of dehydrators and eventually dehydrate all the ancient fruit you’ll have. Late game, my favorite strategy is to grow ancient fruit in the greenhouse and on the island year round and dehydrate all of it, and grow about 500 starfruit in the summer on my main farm to turn into wine. In the fall I grow a lot of fairy roses and build/collect crystalariums for diamonds and make fairy dust to speed up the wine aging process. I also have a barn dedicated to sheep and make a good amount just from of turning the wool into cloth, even more so with golden animal crackers. Use the wiki as needed if none of this paragraph makes sense to you

Anyways. You’ll find a way to play that works best for you. You can change the barn/house colors at Robin’s to make it cuter and move them around as well. Having the furniture catalogs makes it so much easier to decorate and make things cuter too

how to unlock the mine in stardew valley

Unlocking the Mine in Stardew Valley: Key Steps

  1. Reach Level 1 in Farming: You need to progress in the game and reach at least Farming Level 1. This typically happens early in your gameplay as you plant and harvest crops.

  2. Visit the Carpenter's Shop: After reaching Farming Level 1, head to the Carpenter's Shop, which is located in Pelican Town.

  3. Receive the Quest: You will receive a letter from Joja Corp about the mine being closed. After this, you can visit the mine entrance located in the northeast area of the map, just past the Carpenter's Shop.

  4. Enter the Mine: Once you reach the mine entrance, you will find it blocked initially. After receiving the letter, you can enter the mine freely.

  5. Explore the Levels: The mine has multiple levels (up to 120) filled with resources, monsters, and treasures. Be prepared with tools and food to help you explore effectively.

Tips:

  • Bring Weapons: Monsters inhabit the mine, so bring a weapon to defend yourself.
  • Gather Resources: Collect ores, gems, and other materials to upgrade your tools and craft items.
  • Use the Elevator: The mine has an elevator system that allows you to return to previously visited levels easily.

By following these steps, you'll be able to unlock and explore the mine, enhancing your gameplay experience in Stardew Valley!
