How to Unlock Weapons in Cuphead

TL;DR Weapons in Cuphead are unlocked by purchasing them from the shop using coins collected throughout the game. New weapons and charms become available as you buy existing items.

Accessing the DLC

You can access the Cuphead DLC without having completed the base game or defeating the final boss [2:1]. The DLC is accessible from the start, similar to a separate island [2:4]. However, you need to purchase the DLC to access its content [2:5].

Weapon Unlocking Order

In Cuphead, the shop offers five items at a time. When you purchase an item, it is replaced with another. The order for unlocking weapons starts with Lobber followed by Charge [3:1]. This sequential unlocking allows players to gradually expand their arsenal as they progress through the game.

Upgrading Weapons

While some users have asked about upgrading weapons [4:1], Cuphead does not feature weapon upgrades in the traditional sense. Instead, players can switch between different weapons and charms to suit their play style and the challenges presented by various bosses.

Gameplay Mechanics

Cuphead features unique gameplay mechanics where characters use "magic guns" rather than traditional firearms [5:3]. These magic guns do not require ammo, allowing players to fire continuously during battles [5:2]. The game's whimsical design includes elements like planes with bombs and finger guns, contributing to its distinctive aesthetic [5:1][5:7].

For those looking to enhance their gameplay experience, exploring different combinations of weapons and charms can provide strategic advantages against challenging bosses.

Yea I guess but still works as a gun, now it's a just a lil funny thinking some of them use real guns that need ammo while they can just either made or get a potion which lets them just fire at will

Just got it in the mail last night and spent three hours playing it this afternoon. This is far and away the hardest game I have ever played. Definitely would appreciate any tips especially what to use coins on. God bless anyone who has beaten this game, especially 100%.

Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)

Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.

3 upvotes on reddit
Prof2367 · 1 month ago

And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through

Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.

I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge

I also like that no matter how hard a boss is in that game, it never feels like something you can't eventually do.

Just looking at the fight, you know that you have it in you to beat that, it never feels like the game is cheap, it always feels like it's you that is the problem and you know you can get better.

>HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!

Infinite amounts of trial and error, building skills more and more across a period of multiple hours a day, trying new strategies, retrying old strategies,

and a WHOLE lot of dying.

59 upvotes on reddit
decadentbirdgarden · 4 months ago

imo the most satisfying part of the game is in your own skill progression. I’m stuck on the Devil in the base game, but I know I will beat him eventually - the fight is fair and it’s just a matter of fine-tuning my reflexes and responses, as it was for every other fight in the game.

I was looking at my boss fight scores and noticed that I got a B- for Goopy Le Grande and an A- for Dr. Kahl’s Robot, lol. The game truly does get easier with practice (and a lot of patience).

I'm currently s ranking the devil and king dice. P ranked and s ranked everyone else. I had a little under 500 deaths after a+ everything the first go round on normal (including the run n guns), and I did a ton of resetting. I'm sure I'm now over a thousand and I've still be resetting. It's also my first time playing lol

It looks like a more fleshed out version of the cut weapon you can use through debug mode. But it had the ability to shoot through the target to damage multiple enemies/hitboxes. Not sure if that's gonna be part of this gun.

how to unlock weapons in cuphead

Unlocking Weapons in Cuphead: Key Considerations

  1. In-Game Currency: Weapons in Cuphead are purchased using coins, which you can collect throughout the game. Coins are found in levels and from defeating certain bosses.

  2. Visit the Shop: After collecting coins, head to the shop located in the Inkwell Isle 1 area. The shopkeeper, Porkrind, sells various weapons and upgrades.

  3. Types of Weapons:

    • Peashooter: The default weapon, available from the start.
    • Spread: A close-range weapon that fires multiple projectiles.
    • Chaser: Automatically homes in on enemies, making it easier to hit targets.
    • Lobber: Fires projectiles that arc, useful for hitting airborne enemies.
    • Roundabout: A weapon that curves around, allowing for strategic attacks.
  4. Unlocking Weapons:

    • Complete Levels: Progress through the game and defeat bosses to earn coins.
    • Explore: Some coins are hidden in levels, so explore thoroughly to maximize your earnings.
  5. Upgrade Your Weapons: Once you have purchased weapons, you can equip them in the menu. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for your playstyle.

Recommendation: Focus on collecting coins by replaying levels and defeating bosses. Prioritize purchasing the Chaser and Spread weapons early on, as they can significantly ease your gameplay experience.
