What Redditors are Saying

How to Upgrade Tools in Stardew Valley

TL;DR

  • Visit Clint the Blacksmith with the tool you want to upgrade, along with the required metal bars and money.
  • Prioritize upgrades based on your gameplay needs, such as farming or mining efficiency.

Upgrading Process

To upgrade tools in Stardew Valley, you need to visit Clint the Blacksmith. You must have the tool you wish to upgrade in your inventory, along with the necessary materials—copper, iron, or gold bars—and the required amount of money [1:2]. Upgrades take a full day, so plan accordingly, especially for tools like the watering can, which are essential for daily tasks [2:3].

Prioritizing Tool Upgrades

Players often prioritize upgrading their pickaxe and axe first, as these tools are crucial for gathering resources like wood, stone, and ore [2:2]. The watering can is another important tool to upgrade, but timing is key. It's best to upgrade it during rainy days or at the end of a season when it's less needed [2:5]. Some players wait until winter to upgrade the watering can since there are no crops to water during this season [2:4].

Strategic Considerations

When planning upgrades, consider your immediate needs and future goals. For example, if you're focusing on mining, upgrading the pickaxe to handle tougher rocks more efficiently is beneficial [2:7]. Similarly, upgrading the axe allows you to clear larger stumps and logs for hardwood [2:6]. Balancing upgrades with seasonal activities can maximize productivity without hindering your farm's progress.

Full Upgrades and Completionism

While some players fully upgrade all their tools to iridium for completionism or aesthetic reasons, others focus on specific tools that align with their play style [5:1][5:10]. Fully upgrading tools might not be necessary for everyone, especially if you use sprinklers instead of a watering can [5:2]. However, having upgraded tools can enhance convenience and efficiency, particularly in later game stages when resources are abundant.

Additional Tips

  • Utilize rainy days or the last day of a season to upgrade essential tools like the watering can [2:3].
  • Consider crafting multiple furnaces to speed up the smelting process, allowing for quicker access to upgrade materials [2:2].
  • Remember that upgrading tools requires planning around their temporary unavailability, so ensure you don't need the tool for critical tasks during its upgrade period [5:3].

Hi I'm new to the game and I was wondering how I go about upgrading my tools? I know that you have to go through Clint to upgrade but the only upgrade that I have available is the watering can. Is it just a matter of using the tools more and then having the ability to upgrade? Btw I am in summer year 1. TIA

You just have to have the tool on you to see the option. You also need the money and the bars, but you wont see the option without physically having the tool with you

FYI for the upgraded hoe and watering can, you have to hold the button down and it'll give you a wider spread. After each upgrade you can hold it down longer to get an even bigger area, up to 6x3 tiles at iridium

Collect the ores from the mines (though sometimes you can get them from random rocks). Always make sure you upgrade your watering can if there’s going to be a rainy day tomorrow, as you can’t use them for a day while they’re being worked on (less important in winter, when you usually don’t have crops to water). Just keep in mind what you’re plan is for the next day - don’t plan to go to the mines, but trade in your pick axe, for example.

If you want to break open bigger things (for instance the wooden stumps and bigger rocks on your farm) you’ll need to upgrade to the iron tools.

I think the large stumps just require a copper axe, steel (with iron bars) is faster though.

For priority, which one is slowing you down most often? For me that’s the watering can, I like to go to copper (hold down button to water 3 tiles at once) and then stay there while I work toward quality sprinklers. For mining, I recommend at least copper pickaxe once you reach level 40, steel once you reach 80; breaks tougher rocks with fewer hits. For chopping trees, each axe upgrade lets you chop down a regular tree with 2 fewer hits for the top + 1 fewer hit for the stump, which adds up fast when you want to hit a bunch of the trees in the forest (chop down the stump and it regrows in about a week, except in winter; you can also plant tree seeds pretty much wherever you want, for more wood and/or tapping).

This is great—I prioritized my axe and pick every time I got everything up to the same level (e.g. I'd make my axe and pick copper first, then upgrade everything else as I could). I figured I needed more wood/rock/ore than anything else, so those were always my priority upgrades.

Definitely don't forget about your trash can: getting even a small percentage on things you have to throw away is helpful when you accidentally fill up your bag!

Another tip: two furnaces, which initially costs 40 copper ore (20 each, a lot at the start of the game), speed up your bar smelting enough to warrant the upfront cost; I haven't made a third one, mostly because I haven't felt the two wasn't enough for my pace. Copper bars are quick to make (you could make a whole supply of them in a day), but later in the game, it helps to be able to make 4-6 gold bars and 2-4 iridium bars a day for your tools, sprinklers, and bait. :)

You need the iron axe to chop down the big stumps for hardwood, and the iron pickaxe for those giant boulder things on the farm

If you're upgrading your watering can, make sure the next day is either the last day of the season (28) or a rainy day, because if takes Clint a whole non-festival day to upgrade any tool

Waiting until winter to upgrade the watering can is what I tend to do because I don't have anything to water.

You'll need a steel pickaxe to break up the boulders on your farm. Copper axe takes care of the stumps, steel axe takes care of the logs. I have found that the order in which I upgrade these doesn't really matter.

If you can wait, do it in the winter. It was nice to not have to worry about needing certain tools the next day.

At the anvil! You smelt ore into bars are the furnace, and you craft a whole new tool at the anvil. Instead of upgrading your old tool into a better one, you craft a whole new tool once you have enough bars. I typically sell my old tools but I keep the previous watering can tier since you can have multiple watering cans that have separate water storage, so you can fill a bunch up and water your crops without having to go back and forth.

Yay! Where can I get a copper?

3 upvotes on reddit

East of your farm, just keep heading straight to the right after leaving your farm, you will find a minecart outside the blacksmith, interact with the minecart to enter.

For the mines, you will need a key to proceed to the next floor. You can find a rusty key by breaking rocks which will temporarily open the next floor for that day. You can permanently unlock a floor by opening it with a key that you can make at the anvil. The first 10 floors need copper keys, next 10 are iron, etc. Every 10 floors you will need to make a permanent key to progress to the next tier of floors (you can’t get to floor 11 without permanently unlocking the previous floors)

Every 10 floors is a new ore (more or less, at the last few floors before the next 10 you can start finding some of the next tier of ore).

I upgraded the pickaxe a few levels and now mining only takes 1 hit. Does anyone know if upgrading shovel or wood axe do anything? I did just a couple levels each and don't notice any difference. I haven't attempted fishing rod yet.

Edit: Well, sounds like I have an error in my testing. Possible that I upgraded pickaxe while also leveling up and have assumed the upgraded pickaxe allowed fewer hits, but it's based on strength?

Edit #2: Someone with 22str says 3hits still. I have 13str and found a new pickaxe - still getting 1 hit... Unsure what causes 1 hit mining.

Does anyone fully upgrade all their tools?

Posted by JujuBJones1996 · in r/StardewValley · 6 months ago

I watch a lot of Stardew Valley content on YouTube, and it seems like a lot of players don't finish all their tool upgrades. Pretty much everyone seems to fully upgrade their pickaxe, maybe their regular axe as well, but the rest are only upgraded once or twice, or not at all. But I always upgrade all of my tools to iridium, even the trashcan. Maybe it's not fully necessary, but it's not a huge expense late in the game and it's nice to have all the tools look cohesive. So, what do you normally do? Do you try to upgrade everything to iridium, or do you leave some tools out? Which ones?

A lot of the youtubers are minmaxing to a short term goal, like finishing the community center, so fully upgrading their tools would hold them back. If you play for years, it's kind of crazy not to fully upgrade them. Someone said the watering can doesn't need to be fully upgraded because of sprinklers, and yeah, there's truth to that, but when you get to the point of having several stacks of every type of ore, why not do it anyway?

6 upvotes on reddit
JujuBJones1996 · OP · 6 months ago

That's a good point. I definitely don't fully upgrade everything quickly; I usually get everything to steel by the end of the first fall, gold by the end of the first winter, and then iridium either once I have the resources or as needed.

2 upvotes on reddit
JanileeJ · 6 months ago

I upgrade everything. And enchant it, if possible.

The only real drawback is the time without the tool. You end up with more metal bars and money than you can use, anyway.

16 upvotes on reddit
JujuBJones1996 · OP · 6 months ago

I'm a stickler for the upgrades, but not so much the enchantments, I admit 😅 Whether or not I enchant everything depends on how much I feel like hunting cinder shards that particular save.

And you're right about time being the main drawback. Ever since 1.6 dropped I'm always afraid to upgrade my axe during the first summer 😂

4 upvotes on reddit
JanileeJ · 6 months ago

I usually have a lot of cinder shards, since I spend a lot of time hunting Dragontooth Clubs in the volcano.

I got burned on the green rain in my current save. I got the message saying my axe was ready, but Clint wasn't at his shop because of the green rain. 😭

3 upvotes on reddit
mspaghetti12 · 6 months ago

I do it just so everything matches 😅 But especially the axe and pickaxe it’s just so much more convenient. Once you’re a couple years in it’s not a crazy expense, and I usually just save up and do all mine in the winter.

Nice! The iridium trashcan is underrated; you have to throw so much out during Skull Cavern runs that it pays for itself really quick.

40 upvotes on reddit
Own-Car-1 · 6 months ago

I never throw away things in the skull cave because I don't really bring much in with me. In my opinion, you should be going into the Skull Caverns with nothing except a weapon, pickaxe, bombs/staircases, triple shot expresso, 1 stack of food of choice, and maybe a farm totem.

Can’t upgrade tools even with the recipes and ingredients?

Hi guys, I’m new to the game (and subreddit) so apologies if this has been asked before. I’m trying to upgrade my makeshift watering can to the standard one, I have the recipe and all the ingredients… for some reason it doesn’t think I have the makeshift can? You likely already have the standard watering can. In your post you said you “fixed” your watering can. You don’t fix a makeshift watering can as the makeshift tools don’t have durability. If you fixed your watering can as you said, it would have to be standard at the very least.

Maybe you already upgraded to that one, double check which rod you have in your inventory. If it is indeed the correct rod, then it might be a bug unfortunately.

Well just look in inventory which watering can you have. Cause clearly you don't have the makeshift one 😅

what would you say is a good order for upgrade tools?

Hi guys I want to ask you for your recommendation for upgrade tools.

Right now I'm almost at the end of summer in year 1 and I already have the Copper Watering Can and I was wondering what could be a good next upgrade? I was thinking on the pickaxe or an axe.

Also I already have steel bar so I could upgrade the watering can.

Thanks in advance.

In my case, the first tool I max upgrade is the Pickaxe, a gold pickaxe is enough to save you a lot of time in breaking stones and ores in the mines. Also by having an upgraded pickaxe, helps you in collecting ores faster and easily, which you'd used to upgrade the other tools.

I only have my watering can at copper level, because I invested the ores I found using the pickaxe in crafting sprinklers. Upgrading axe is ideal also, cuts trees fast without draining much energy.

Upgrading your wood axe gives you access to another part of the map, so that was always my priority. Upgrading other tools just makes things easier/faster.

Getting pickaxe to steel early is a huge help (and gold soon after). I try to snag a copper watering can as soon as the weather gives me the all clear, since you end up planting a lot your first summer and fall if you want to make plenty of cash early. I like to shoot for the steel axe as soon as possible so I can get in the secret woods early on; the daily source of hardwood is great to get rolling so you can afford some of the pricier upgrades and buildings. Then I upgrade the hoe last, just for convenience lol

Noob question on upgrading tools.

Posted by Steelhistory · in r/StardewValley · 6 years ago

Hello, beginner question here.

Do we have to upgrade tools in order of tier? So like, is it required to upgrade a watering can to copper to get it to steel? Or can we skip the copper level and go straight to a steel can?

If I can save the 2000 gold on not upgrading to a copper can first, i will.

Keep checking the weather forecast on the TV in the morning. If you're on day 10 and it says it's going to rain tomorrow, then water your crops that morning and bring the watering can to Clint to upgrade. On day 11 the rain will water your crops, and on day 12 your upgraded watering can will be ready. That way you don't miss any days for watering. If you're desperate to upgrade you can use a rain totem to force rain for the next day.

You need to level up first. If you get to a certain level, the npcs will reach out to you to talk to them and the blueprints will be available. You can get the exquisite tools by reaching level 9 (if i remember correctly) so keep cutting tree, foraging, mining, hunting, and fishing to level up. I recommend going to the phoenix shrine and dragon shrine if you have enough renown. The phoenix shrine upgrades your bonus per focus (i don't remember what it's called) but i think it helps you level up more. the dragon shrine raises your focus' capacity. also don't forget to repair your tools if you have standard tools and above otherwise they'd go back to their previous state.

      • Steel Pickaxe: 5 Iron Bars
      • Gold Pickaxe: 5 Gold Bars
      • Iridium Pickaxe: 5 Iridium Bars
    • You can find ores by mining in the mines or breaking rocks on your farm.
  2. Collect Gold:

    • You’ll need gold to pay for the upgrades:
      • Copper Pickaxe: 2,000g
      • Steel Pickaxe: 5,000g
      • Gold Pickaxe: 10,000g
      • Iridium Pickaxe: 25,000g
  3. Visit the Blacksmith:

    • Go to Clint’s Blacksmith shop in Pelican Town.
    • Select the tool you want to upgrade and ensure you have the required materials and gold.
  4. Wait for Completion:

    • Each upgrade takes two days to complete. You cannot use the tool during this time.
  5. Repeat for Other Tools:

    • You can upgrade your axe, hoe, and watering can using the same process, just with different materials and costs.

Tips:

  • Prioritize upgrading tools based on your playstyle. For example, upgrading the watering can early can help with farming efficiency.
  • Always keep a stock of ores and bars for future upgrades.
  • Consider using the "Blacksmith" profession to increase the efficiency of your upgrades.

By following these steps, you can effectively upgrade your tools and enhance your farming experience in Stardew Valley!
