Current State of Weapon Upgrades
As of now, Helldivers 2 does not offer traditional weapon upgrades like those found in the original game. Players have expressed disappointment over this absence, noting that the lack of upgrades makes the gameplay feel less dynamic [1:1],
[5:1]. The developers have yet to release any official updates or patches that introduce weapon upgrades, though there is speculation and hope within the community that they might be added in the future
[4:11],
[5:5].
Warbond Variants as Alternatives
The closest thing to weapon upgrades currently available are the Warbond variants of guns. These variants provide some modifications, such as explosive shells for the Liberator, but they are generally seen as sidegrades rather than direct improvements [4:2],
[4:6]. Some players feel these variants do not significantly enhance the weapons' performance, and they often come with trade-offs, such as reduced magazine capacity
[4:1],
[4:3].
Customization and Modifications
While there are no traditional upgrades, some primary weapons can be "modified" during gameplay by changing firing modes or using special ammunition types once planet-side [4:1]. However, these modifications are limited and do not equate to permanent upgrades that improve the weapon's base stats.
Community Hopes and Suggestions
The community has expressed a desire for more comprehensive weapon customization options, such as changing sights, adding laser dots, or equipping flashlights [5:1]. Players hope that future updates will introduce these features, along with potential upgrades that could enhance damage, magazine capacity, or other aspects of the weapons
[5:4].
In summary, while Helldivers 2 currently lacks traditional weapon upgrades, players can explore Warbond variants and in-game modifications as temporary solutions. The community remains hopeful for future updates that will expand weapon customization and upgrade options.
Can’t seem to find anything on upgrading weapons if that’s even in the game. It seems weird that a level 1 and 20 in this game would have basically the same loadout apart from some stratagems especially for a shooter.
You upgrade strats not weapons. I'd rather not have to deal with upgrading weapons. Just another grind between myself and democracy
As someone who reached lv 50 already i disagree
Yup OG helldivers had weapon upgrades probably they will add it later on
Is buying variants from Warbonds the only real way to upgrade Primary and Secondary weapons?
If so. Give me my bayonet back Arrowhead.
Yep, that's it.
Laser weapons and Revolver it is then. Sigh. We have to pick up so many samples and other junk. Maybe we'll get weapon upgrades like the first game with a title update or something.
One can dream
I know this is a stupid question but I have been using the default guns since I got the game a week ago and they haven’t been the best so is. There any way of getting different guns at the level I’m at (level 5)
Battle pass unlocks them
Guns are unlocked from the Warbonds with medals.
Equip them from your armoury or when selecting your gear before you dive.
I just did it thank you so much 🙏🙏
Am I missing something or there are no weapon upgrades? All I could found was Ship modules
I think the equivalent of 'upgrades' would be the warbond variants of guns. Like the Liberator has explosive shells in the premium warbond.
Id agree if the Explosive Liberator wasn't a sidegrade at best.
Oh really? How come it isn’t just a straight upgrade.. I was about to unlock it! 😅
Yeah we had high hopes lol, all we got was more useless warbond guns and a bunch of nerf. devs clearly hate fun.
As of today, the Devs have not released weapon upgrades. You can "modify" some of the primary weapons once you have landed planet-side by holding in the RELOAD button and switching your flashlight on permanently and changing your firing modes. It is 100% True that even the Premium Warbond weapon unlocks are subpar and the standard Liberator and standard Breaker will out DPS them entirely. The explosive and incendiary rounds come under-powered since they have an elemental effect and also come with less magazines, making anyone considering them think twice as you will be taking up more of your Team's resupply drops for yourself. The Penetrator Liberator gets a bit more love. It has less power than the standard liberator but comes with three perks. The ability to melt through medium armor and the ability to switch to a long range scope while using burst fire or semi fire. It also comes with 10 magazines helping to offset the lower initial damage.
Other than that, Heavy and Medium Armor at the moment are also underwhelming, with Light Armor being the king of the pack. Heavy armor reduces your stamina regen and run speed so significantly, you are basically a liability. Light armor can still take a good hit, and with the shield backpack strategem, will see you through Helldiver difficulty. Your stamina will regen faster and you will be faster on your feet. Always try to look for armor that gives you +2 stims / +2 grenades, etc. Those are the unique and viable armors that enable you to stay alive or take out more enemy spawners.
Tiny note in regards to the liberator penetrator: I don't agree with the ammo comment.
It has 30 rounds in a magazine and brings 10 magazines, while the regular liberator has 45 rounds in a magazine and brings 7 magazines.
11 * 30 = 330, 8 * 45 = 360
(11 instead of 10 because I'm also counting the magazine that's already in the gun)
So the ammo difference is slight and not even really in its favor.
I don't agree about Heavy armour.
You can survive one full tank hit. Light armour will get you oneshot, and when I play solo is the difference between being a sacrifice or get out
Everything else I 100% agree
The armor values actually dont work atm. Patch notes confirm this.
In solo i find mobility a big factor in staying alive.
They teased the exosuit, and the game just came out.
Probably in a future update maybe?
didn't age well, the exosuit is terrible (at least in my opinion)
god damn.. they MUST implement this, its almost a dealbreaker for me
We all miss baionettas
My question is basically what the title is. I just unlocked the defender smg after finding out its in this game aswell, but I didnt have a chance to use it as I had to leave the house. Im sure its good regardless, but is there anyway to get gun upgrades like in the first game?
No weapon upgrades as of right now. I'm hoping they let us do something like change the sights, or add laser dots on the barrel or a flashlight if the weapon doesn't have one, but I'm not sure how I feel about straight upgrades like more damage or extra mag capacity as that changes the balance of weapons (I didn't play HD1 so don't know how it worked there)
It was generally just stuff like armor piercing ammo, larger mags, smaller bullet spread, that type of stuff. (for that last upgrade, remember the game was a top-down angle shooter so this wouldve been more significant then than it would be now, though it would still be nice in HD2 ofc)
Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate you guys sparing me the trouble! Maybe if we kill enough automatons, Joel will change his diabolical ways and bless us with some fun new perks. Spill oil, fellas
Not yet hopefully soon
Not yet, but leaks seem to suggest it’s coming.
Unfortunately not.
I bought helldivers on the ps4 and when i try to equip weapons it says they are a reinforcement pack and i need to pay for them. Can i get them any other way?
Dlc weapons are only from buying the dlcs
No, the DLC equipment can only be unlocked by buying them.
If you mean how to unlock more than just the starter stuff, you get some by leveling up and you get more by completing planets.
>Can i get them any other way?
No.
The DLC weapons are side-grades of what you will unlock while leveling, with the "meta" guns being unlocked with levels
So I’m back at playing Helldivers 2 again after months of not playing it and honestly glad I’m back cause I forgot how good the game is. I just want to know what are the weapons to use now since they nerfed and buffed weapons with the updates. Last time I played was when the first warbond pack came out. Is the sickle rifle still good? Give me some suggestions on primary weapons to use against automatons/bugs that people are using now and what strategem weapons too. I found out that the quasar luncher takes a long time to recharge now and the auto cannon is hella good now. Thanks!
Good:
Decent:
"Bad":
I think that you discount the standard liberator. It's a perfectly fine gun; marginally worse than the sickle maybe, but the DPS is fairly similar, it has no spin-up time, and you can keep firing for longer when accounting for reloads
I tried to be conservative because we know how this sub is, if I had to do it more based on what I think the list would look like this
OP:
Good:
Decent but not great (or niche):
We need a top like this but only with free warbond weapons.
One of the very few times I agree with a primary weapons take on this subreddit
Great list and agree with every choice
Personally I feel like its burst DPS is too high and magazine too small, so it absolutely melts part of a patrol and leaves me on reload for the rest.
YMMV as I've always liked more powerful slower firing weapons. I also don't care for the new carbine (that doesn't mean it's "bad").
What you will usually see it Dominator or Scorcher on bots and Sickle or Incendiary breaker on bugs.
Most weapons however are viable, but this is the general pattern.
I've been maining the Scorcher, but yesterday I dropped down with the Diligence Counter Sniper. It is definitely viable if you can move around undetected.
Used to main Diligence too, but its weakness is no stagger on heavy and rocket devastators that are virtually impossible to deal with from front with that gun (at least with my aim), switched to eruptor and its great, even staggers rocket devastators so you can two shot them before they launch their salvo, and takes out scout striders with one groin shot. Only weakness are berserkers that get too close too soon.
Plasma punisher is clutch on bots the aoe locks down while squads. And it can 2 tap striders everytime.
The good weapons are the ones you enjoy playing, friend. Go try em and see what sticks with you.
Yes the plasma purifier slaps
It's been 5 months since we had new ones. That's almost half as long Helldivers 2 existed. I just want to spend my hard-earned currencies!
I would love for the backpack call-in time to match the weapon call-in time. It's lame getting my support weapon instantly and then sitting there like a goober for another 10 seconds waiting on the pack. But tbh, interested in anything new to spend samples on.
I throw my backpack, then toss my support weapon on the same spot, then throw down a smoke strike, then get lined up so when the backpack lands destroying the weapon pod I can catch it
What I do is call in my supply backpack first. Look around for danger/POI's and then throw in my support weapon. Most of the time they arrive at the same time. But I agree with you.
Things I want:
Integration of drones and other sentries with helldiver optics(to compliment the motar one)
Detonation of remaining ammunition for explosive sentries upon destruction
A ship upgrade to let all sentries you call down target what you ping instead of just mortars (why just mortars to begin with???) would be awesome
Best I can do is 2% faster Hellpod landing speed costs 350 Common/280 Rare/62 Super Samples - AH
Jokes on you I'd still upgrade it.
A vehicle bay would be perfect.
We just need more vehicles.
Vehicle bay with upgrades for the Mechs and the FRV. And the APC/Tank I hope we'll get.
And more names. Still hoping to get “of Vengeance” as a suffix
Patch notes information on the playstation blog and on YouTube.
Weapon customisation deep dive here on YouTube. Playing a weapon gives xp and unlocks mods for it!
They cooked 🔥
Played a ton yesterday. The weapon customization was such a welcome surprise and makes the game feel significantly more complete in a way I find hard to quantify.
Lots of weapons that didn't feel good now feel excellent, or can be made to feel excellent with a mod or two; and the Wasp went from killing me all the time to only killing me (or teammates) when I (they) mostly deserve it which is a HUGE improvement. I love the changes to the super-store so can't wait for those to get pushed live.
Great update, 10/10.
I'm new to the WASP, and I learned quickly that it is not great in close quarters. Those rockets come out every which way, and will absolutely explode in your face if not vigilant of your surroundings. Last night I was charging up the stairs to a flag raising objective and tried to nail a fleshmob at the top. All four rockets I fired exploded directly in front of me on the stairs.
any word on if strat weapons can be modded? like the mg43 or the stalwart?
Negative, no stratagem weapon modifying yet
Correct. Likewise, no modding of secondaries “for now.”
Just primary weapons at the moment, it did sound like they want to expand the system to secondary weapons at least.
I wanna put a laser sight on my hatchet
At work currently but from what i read it is just primary weaponry as of now.
Do note that collab weapons are not customizable.
That said, Killzone weapons are effectively extended mag liberators/defenders with higher ROF.
Must be bugged, the patch notes said they got rid of the rotation
I just checked the store and I still only have three sets available
Should've called this thing the "Portable Flashbang" because it's killing multiple bugs AND my sight capabilities 😭😭
Honor is yours my fellow comerad

How to upgrade weapons in Helldivers 2
Upgrading Weapons in Helldivers 2: Key Considerations
Resource Management: Collect resources during missions, as you'll need them to upgrade your weapons. Pay attention to the types of resources required for different upgrades.
Weapon Customization: Explore the customization options available for each weapon. This may include attachments like scopes, grips, and barrels that enhance performance.
Leveling Up: As you progress through the game, your weapons may level up based on usage. Regularly use your favorite weapons to unlock their full potential.
Skill Trees: Check if there are skill trees or upgrade paths specific to each weapon class. Investing in these can provide significant boosts to your weapon's capabilities.
Experimentation: Try different combinations of upgrades to find what works best for your playstyle. Some upgrades may enhance damage, while others improve accuracy or reload speed.
Recommendation: Focus on upgrading weapons that complement your preferred playstyle and team composition. If you enjoy close-quarters combat, prioritize shotguns or SMGs with upgrades that enhance damage and reload speed. For long-range engagements, invest in rifles with scopes and stability enhancements. Always adapt your upgrades based on the challenges you face in missions.
