Using Eggs in Alien Containment in Subnautica

TL;DR To hatch eggs in Subnautica, place them in an Alien Containment unit by building a hatch to access it. Drop the eggs inside and wait for them to hatch over several in-game days.

Building and Accessing Alien Containment

To use eggs in Alien Containment, you first need to build the Alien Containment unit itself. This requires finding and scanning blueprints, which can often be found in wrecks or Degasi bases [4:1][4:2]. Once constructed, you must add a hatch to the containment unit to enter it and interact with its contents [3:1].

Placing and Hatching Eggs

Once inside the Alien Containment, simply drop the eggs from your inventory into the tank [1:3][3:6]. The eggs will hatch automatically after a few in-game days, though the exact time can vary depending on the species [1:1][3:2]. Ensure there is enough space in the tank, as a full tank will prevent additional eggs from being added or hatching [5:2][5:6].

Using Alien Containment for Breeding

Alien Containment can also be used for breeding small fish, such as Bladderfish, which can provide a sustainable source of food and water [2:9]. You can capture small fish and add them to the containment to breed naturally [2:3].

Stacking Alien Containments

For those who want to create larger aquariums, Alien Containments can be stacked within Multipurpose Rooms to increase capacity. This allows for more extensive collections of fauna and flora, providing both aesthetic enjoyment and practical resources [1:1].

Troubleshooting Egg Placement

If you encounter issues placing eggs, ensure the tank is not full and try reloading the game [5:2][5:4]. Some players have reported bugs where certain eggs cannot be placed, so seeking out another egg may be necessary if problems persist [5:2].

ORIGINAL POST

I already have the alien containment, but i can't figure out how to hatch eggs. whenever i go inside it only lets me use the planter. I can't find any tutorials or help anywhere else online, so i thought i'd ask.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Only the medium-sized fish in the game have collectable/hatchable eggs, tiny ('prey') fish reproduce in containment through spawning, and Leviathan-class organisms are off limits, unless you're on PC and know how to use console commands.

  • Different species of fauna eggs take different amounts of in-game time to hatch, consult the wiki for estimates.

  • You can stack Alien Containments inside stacked Multipurpose Rooms to create a really tall super tank. My biggest is six high. The more tanks you stack the more fauna you can fit, just keep in mind that many egg creatures tend to take up more space inside containment, just as they do in your inventory. I.e, one tank can fit 10 prey fish but only a few larger fish.

Have fun! Hatching eggs, deciding what I want to populate my tanks and which flora to put in them are one of my favorite little things to do in this game.

I just built my first containment yesterday - a two stack. I hatched a rabbit ray (and a crash fish, which I immediately tossed in my bioreactor lol) and snagged one of every fish I could find in the Safe Shallows, then filled it with plants from the Safe Shallows, too. I can already tell I'm going to be obsessed with this feature lol.

I finally built an alien containment and am unsure what to put in it. Do I just leave creatures eggs in there? Or do I catch fish and leave them in there to breed?

You get eggs, and place them in there. You can also pick up small fish like bladder fish and put them inside.

And the fish breed too, so I used these for bladder fish farming xD easy water supply.

Best early game water source is salt + coral to make bleach then you can make 2 x disinfected water, suprised you hadn't discovered that by the time you were able to build an alien containment lol

TDA_Liamo · 7 months ago

Just get a water filtration machine. It gives you large bottles of water (+50 water instead of +20) and also salt which you can use to cure fish for food.

If you don't have the blueprint it's in >!one of the degasi bases!<.

i have a mod for more time capsules and one to make me able to scan for them and i personally go around placing scanners every while and just scan for time capsules and hope for cuddle fish eggs as of now i got 15 and im planning on getting 100 before building a 10 story multipurpose room with alien containment to have over 100 cuddle fish in them then a while later i would just unleash the army to the wild and watch the chaos and keep some for the bioreacto-

my lawyers have advised me to not finish this joke.

I mean, technically you are alien and you contain creatures which you kidnapped from their own world to your container. So you actually a bad guy here, bad alien who kidnapped kids from their families, brainwashed them(as they wont attack you) and then used them for experiments or test, or just to contain them in cage

Alien containment unit has a space of 10 units. If there is no space for the egg it will not hatch. All you need to dk is throw the egg randomly in the alien containement unit it takes about 3 in game days i think and then it hatches.

“Aquarium” can’t have eggs, you need the “Alien Containment” for those, and as said you then built a hatch on it.

Do you mean for the egg to hatch?.They usually take awhile from what I remember from the original Subnautica game. Not made an Alien containment Unit in Below Zero so don’t know how long they take to hatch in that game.

The eggs will only hatch in alien containment units. You have to open a databox to get it. I don't think the storyline takes you there because it's by s part of shipwreck. I think I know where it should be around but if you don't want to know and explore for yourself then don't read the next part

At the close side of the Aurora is a big cliff with a lot of recourses. You can follow this cliff in the direction of the open Aurora side. When the cliff stops you need to go left in the mushroom Forrest. There is a wreck with the databox to the acu somewhere there.

Slight correction: The storyline does take you somewhere you can get the ACU. Won't say where, to avoid spoilers.

There sadly seems to be a bug that some eggs just can’t be placed :/ If it’s not an uncommon one maybe look for another one?

Also, it’s possible that the tank is full. Can you add other eggs to the tank?

Incubators Not Included

Posted by [deleted] · in r/Oxygennotincluded · 4 months ago
post image

PSA: You dont need incubators except early on to get carnivore. Once critter populations stabilize, eggs in = eggs out and the incubator serves no purpose other than to hold babies for 5 cycles for immediate relocation.

...except, that functionality can be done even cheaper by a newly buffed building: the critter trap. Its now reusable and only requires ore to build while consuming no power, and also holds critters for several cycles (Ive not tested how long and am still working on improving this design. I only know it releases babies when they grow into adults). Introducing the new design:

Eggs are sorted and deposited by species in their own room. A puddle automatically evolves the unused critters, except when the traps are empty and the doors open. We control this with a critter sensor instead of the traps output, because we dont know if excess babies entered the room or if the traps ejected their critters to be recaught shortly later.

you dont even need dropoffs actually.

just a two tile blob that fills a pneumatic door will do. Drop the eggs into it, and only open it when you need more critters.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 4 months ago

It doesn't show well but there's water in the tile with the eggs. The critters drown unless the door opens. Is that what you mean?

1 upvotes on reddit
CraziFuzzy · 4 months ago

Where does the critter trap play into what you are showing here?

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 4 months ago

They're a little hard to see cuz they're flat on the floor, but they catch critters on the way out of the drowning chamber and hold them until delivery time.

Their only drawback is that they don't filter by species, so you need a room per species.

1 upvotes on reddit
CraziFuzzy · 4 months ago

ha.. didn't see them on the phone screen. But the critter pick-up would work for this as well, wouldn't it?

Do you need to put eggs in an alien containment unit for them to hatch?

I dropped an egg onto the ground and it started doing the wiggly thing like in the alien containment unit, but it was outside. I'm asking so I don't accidentally lose the egg somehow while testing it. (also it's for below zero in case there's a difference between the two games)

Posted by EbonyMWood · in r/subnautica · 4 months ago

Probable spoilers ahead! Read at own risk!

It was a reasonable amount of work but fortunately only about a dozen or so creatures with eggs you can collect and hatch so i managed it!

I have a two story large room alien containment with all the hatched creatures + a mix of wild fish i caught to make it look like a proper aquarium.

Actually really happy with how it turned out. ☺️

If there are any eggs i may have missed feel free to mention them but I did use google to find out which eggs I could find in the game for use in alien containment.

Tbh probably doing this as im procrastinating going back to the lava zone to progress the game story-i want the game to last as long as possible as its my first play through.

How to use eggs in alien containment in subnautica

Using Eggs in Alien Containment in Subnautica: Key Considerations

  1. Building the Alien Containment:

    • First, ensure you have the blueprint for the Alien Containment module. You can find it in the game or scan fragments.
    • Build the Alien Containment inside your base using the Habitat Builder.
  2. Placing Eggs:

    • Once the Alien Containment is built, you can place eggs inside it. Simply approach the containment and interact with it to access the inventory.
    • Drag and drop the eggs into the containment area. You can use various types of eggs, such as those from different species like the Sea Dragon or the Reefback.
  3. Hatching Process:

    • After placing the eggs, they will take some time to hatch. You’ll need to wait for a period (usually several in-game days) for the eggs to develop into creatures.
    • Ensure the containment is well-maintained and has enough space for the creatures once they hatch.
  4. Feeding and Care:

    • Once the eggs hatch, the newly spawned creatures will need to be fed. You can provide them with food by placing it in the containment.
    • Monitor their health and ensure they have enough space to swim around.
  5. Harvesting Resources:

    • Some creatures can provide resources or materials once they mature. For example, the Cutefish can be harvested for food.

Recommendation:

  • Experiment with different types of eggs to see which creatures you prefer to raise. Some may offer unique benefits or resources. Additionally, ensure your base has adequate power and resources to support the Alien Containment module effectively.
