How to Use the Scanner Room Effectively in Subnautica

TL;DR Equip the HUD chip, upgrade the scanner room range, and utilize camera drones for resource gathering and exploration.

Scanner Room Upgrades

The scanner room becomes significantly more useful with upgrades. The HUD chip is essential as it displays scanned resources directly on your heads-up display (HUD), allowing you to locate materials without needing to return to the scanner room [1:1][1:7]. Range upgrades are also crucial, each extending the scanning radius by 50 meters, stacking up to a maximum of 500 meters [3:1][3:4].

Resource Gathering

Using the scanner room for efficient resource gathering can save a lot of time. Once upgraded, it can help locate necessary materials like copper or rare items needed for crafting [5:1]. The scanner room's built-in fabricator allows you to craft the HUD chip and other upgrades, enhancing its utility [1:1].

Camera Drones

Camera drones act as remote-controlled beacons, helping mark cave entrances or points of interest [3:1]. While they do not directly affect scanning capabilities, they can aid in exploring areas safely and expanding the list of scannable items by rendering new locations [2:1][3:4].

Multiple Scanner Rooms

Building multiple scanner rooms can be beneficial, especially if placed in different biomes. This setup allows for broader coverage and access to diverse resources [1:4][1:6]. Some players even use additional scanner rooms for specific purposes, such as monitoring leviathan movements [1:9].

Base Location and Integration

Strategically placing your base near resource-rich areas enhances the scanner room's effectiveness. Many players prefer building bases near thermal vents or reef pillars for easy access to power and resources [5:5][5:8]. Integrating the scanner room into your base design, such as connecting it to a moonpool, can streamline operations and improve overall efficiency [5:12].

Other than the cameras, i don't find it very useful.

I cannot even read this blue weird 3d map 😭

I have set up it near my lifepod. Should I put a scanner room in other places also, is it any useful?

Once you have the HUD chip and see what it can do, I would highly recommend upgrading the scanner room for maximum range. It has saved me a ton of time in finding things I needed.

HungaryaRoli · 1 month ago

I'd argue with anybody how it is the single most useful equippment in the entire thing (scanner excluded)

You can scan a ton of stuff with it and see how close they are. If you dont have a HUD chip, you can use the cameras to see tgeir exact location!

This. The room (or even multiple scanner rooms) make a lot of sense once you have the HUD chip installed.

The hud chip puts the pings on your hud so u can find resources outside the base, useful for finding resources and tracking the monsters

The cameras I think increase the range a bit but more rooms make that range bigger

Snacker6 · 1 month ago

Until you get it, you can search for it, then send the camera out to it, then use that to find it yourself. It is not the most convenient way to find things, but it is useful if you can't find something any other way

More efficient resource gathering. The scanner room has its own fabricator, make the HUD chip and then expand the search radius to max and you can easily find the necessary materials to build the equipment and tools to survive.

There needs to be at least one resource loaded into memory and within range for you to be able to scan it. If you load the game while already near your scanning room and take a look at the list, there will be bugger all there, so you need to swim around and load further areas for the scanner to be able to pick 'em up.

How do the cameras work? Can I just leave the two cameras far from the actual room and then the Room can pick up what's in the area between those two cameras? If that's so, what does the range increase module do? I am very confused as to how it works but I've heard it's very useful.

You can scan for materials arond the room with the main interface (the range upgrade buff this) or drive around the cameras to look without risking your life (you are gonna lose signal if you go to far, again, range upgrade)

Don't bother with the cameras, just get the chip that highlights what you're scanning for, you make it in the scanner room fabricator

The cameras are just for scouting, and have no direct influence on what you can scan. The scanning options are based on what you’ve got loaded into your memory, what you’ve seen or been near that the game had to render. The camera drones can help look around, making more things render, but only when actively used. If you close the game and open it back up the list of scanning options will be wiped until you scout around and see things again.

Base scanning range iirc is 300m, and each module increased it by 50m. Camera range before the image fades out to static is unconnected to scanner range.

Cameras are basically RC beacons, useful for marking cave entrances or other points of interest so you can follow the camera marker. The scanner works separately and scans a radius of 300m, you click on the resource you want to find and it'll highlight it on the holomap in the room, if you get the range upgrade it gets +50 meters range and they stack so you can get up to 500m scan range. One of the scanner room upgrades will make it highlight whatever you're scanning without you having to stay there, this actually goes in one of your gear slots so you can still have 4 range upgrades (the speed upgrade wasn't worthwhile imo)

[No Spoilers] How do I interface with the scanner room?

Posted by Tuliao_da_Massa · in r/subnautica · 3 years ago

I'm more or less a begginer so no spoilers please. I built the scanner room, and I can access everything apart from the little console that shows resources to collect. I can click in the arrow uo and down, but for some bizarre reason, I can only click it with the jump button. The resources themselves I can't click at all. I'm playing at ps4. Does anyone know what's goimg on?

I did change the control of moving up in the water from R1 to X, but that can't possibly have anything to do with it. What do I do?

Scanner rooms with all the range upgrade and the scanner room chip are the best, if you need to stock up in materials (like the good old C O P P E R) or need to fabricate something and need something rare. The scanner rooms are useful as hell and I can't imagine a proper base without them.

Actually, i think it needs to connect directly to the multipurpose room. There can be a platform under the multipurpose room, but not under the scanner room. I haven't had any luck attaching a scanner room to a hallway or a moonpool. And i think the observation room has the same rules.

Cause it's module building if you put it there and tried to connect it to your multipurpose room the pieces would not line up so maybe it's stopping you from having that issue

Put a hatch on the hallway you build to extend it out. That way you will be able to quickly swap out the resources you're scanning for and collect different materials you need from the biome in succession.

I had to bud out an extension hallway to fit a scanner room on an early playthrough and did that to make it feel a little more intentional, but it ended up being so practical that now I always do it anyways

This is pretty much how I got through the game 😅 I'm a big baby - it helped me acclimate to new areas I was scared of. I put 4 range upgrades in each. The cameras are helpful for exploring the area and seeing what's around without risking your life or vehicles. It was also helpful to be able to track where any leviathans were with the HUD upgrade, especially at night.

I placed them at least 1000m away from bases and other scanners to make sure there was no overlap. As others say, they are very helpful for finding resources.

In terms of power I always put them somewhere I could use solar panels or thermal - so I didn't need to manually add anything to reactors.

You can do this if you want, but I personally just have a "mobile" scanner room. I'll prepare the materials to build a scanner room, a hatch, and 2 solar panels, then build them whenever I find a location I want to scan in. And when I'm done, I deconstruct everything to get all my resources back. This then allows me to build again at the next location I want to do some scanning.

[SPOILERS] Scanner Room

Posted by [deleted] · in r/subnautica · 4 years ago

I’m on my first ever play through and I just got the moon pool. I placed it where my scanner room was previously located so I attached my scanner room to the side of the moon pool. After I moved it the list of items I could scan for previously 3 pages went down to 1 with only sulfur, quartz, salt, titanium and wrecks on it now. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks

The game resets every time you quit too so you have to "unlock" everywhere again if you want to see what you can scan.

Btw you can pretty much carry everything needed to make a Scanner Room on you and loaded into your vehicles.

Aaaaand since you get everything back you can essentially take your Scanner Room with you when you explore.

However you'll have to bring a few extra things (power source + place to put it) if you're going to build it in deeper water since solar power decreases the further down you go.

The scanner room will only list the items you’ve currently seen/got loaded in your buffer. Log out and back in and the list will reset. Go swimming around, or like they said the camera drone, and anything that you got near and the game had to load in will now show up on the list.

How to build a scanner room in subnautica

What are the benefits of the scanner room in subnautica

AI Answer

🤖

How to use the scanner room effectively in subnautica

Here are some key considerations for using the Scanner Room effectively in Subnautica:

  1. Location: Place your Scanner Room in a strategic location, preferably near your base or areas where you frequently explore. This will allow for easy access to scanned resources.

  2. Power Management: Ensure your Scanner Room is adequately powered. Use solar panels or thermal generators to keep it running, especially if you're scanning for extended periods.

  3. Upgrades: Invest in upgrades for your Scanner Room:

    • Range Upgrade: Increases the scanning radius, allowing you to find resources further away.
    • Speed Upgrade: Reduces the time it takes to scan for resources.
    • Scanner Room HUD Chip: Displays scanned resources on your HUD for quick reference.
  4. Resource Scanning: Use the Scanner Room to locate specific resources by selecting them from the interface. This is particularly useful for finding rare materials like diamonds or lithium.

  5. Fragment Scanning: You can also scan for vehicle fragments and other blueprints. This is essential for progressing in the game and unlocking new technologies.

  6. Use the Camera Drone: Deploy the camera drone to explore areas that are hard to reach or dangerous. This allows you to scout for resources without putting yourself in harm's way.

  7. Regularly Check Scans: Make it a habit to check the Scanner Room frequently to keep track of available resources and adjust your scanning priorities as needed.

Recommendation: Combine the Scanner Room with other facilities like the Moonpool and Fabricator to streamline your resource gathering and crafting processes. This will enhance your overall efficiency in the game.
