DIY and Handmade Gifts
If you're looking for budget-friendly and personal gifts, consider making something yourself. Homemade items like pine cone syrup [1:1], body scrubs made from Epsom salts and olive oil
[1:2], or winter hand salves with foraged plants
[1:3] can be thoughtful and unique. Paper mache ornaments using flour and water as glue are another creative option
[1:5]. These gifts not only save money but also add a personal touch that recipients will appreciate.
Gifts for Classmates and Teachers
For classmates and teachers, small yet meaningful gifts can make a big impact. Candy is often a hit across all age groups, and you can get creative by making candy sleighs [3:1]. Other ideas include reusable chopsticks with a Ramen bowl
[3:2], tea bags, or DIY s'mores packages
[3:4]. For a more personalized touch, consider giving a class photo in a decorated frame
[3:7].
Gifts for Men
Finding the right gift for men can be challenging, but personalized items often work well. Consider engraved gifts like a leather keyring with coordinates, an insulated travel mug, or a multitool with custom engraving [4:4]. Humorous gifts such as a funny t-shirt or a novelty bottle opener can also be a hit
[4:2]
[4:5]. If you're looking for something experiential, consider gifting a class, subscription, or tickets to an event
[4:6].
Festival-Themed Gifts
For someone who enjoys festivals, practical gifts like a festival ticket, pashmina, artist merchandise, Camelbak, or comfy shoes could be appreciated [2:1]. These items cater to the needs of festival-goers and show thoughtfulness in understanding their interests.
General Tips
When choosing last-minute gifts, focus on the recipient's interests and preferences. Personalized or handmade gifts can convey thoughtfulness without breaking the bank. Additionally, experiences or subscriptions can provide lasting memories beyond the holiday season.
Hey everyone! I am broke (aren’t we all?) and have no income coming in. I bake for some people for Christmas gifts and love to spoil my parents. I also have some new friends who I’d like to make something for. Anyway, what are some really awesome gifts I could make without a huge overhead cost other than food things? I’m sort of a Jill of all trades and a master of none, but given it’s September, I hope I can work on things and practice leading up to the holiday.
Mix epson salts with olive oil to make a body scrub. Write a poem and frame it. Print out a picture of you and them and put it in a Christmas ornament. Make book marks for them and give them a book you are done reading. Check out the website Buy Nothing Christmas for more ideas.
What about a winter hand salve with foraged healing plants in little jars or tins?
That is such a unique idea! Thank you, I will have to search on how to make that. Much appreciated!!!
Paper mache! You need flour and water as your "glue," and whatever paper scraps you can find. Buy a bag of balloons and mold your paper mache around those. Paint them. Ornaments!
Next spring, if you are interested, you can harvest small green young pine cones, layer them in sugar in a jar and make pine cone syrup to gift.
Awesome! Thank you.

Since you mentioned you are Asian, if you are comfortable leaning into that on the gift front, how about a set of nice reusable chopsticks and maybe a Ramen bowl (I have seen some where the bowl has a chopsticks holder built in, optional package of Ramen (or other asian noodle pack). I once did a tea party themed kids party and bought surprisingly high quality china teacups from tj maxx or homegoods and filled them with goodies as a party favor- the kids still had those cups years later- making the idea a little more grown-up, you could shut the discount stores multiple times finding the best deals on mismatch mugs. You really like until you have enough of them and you could put some individually wrapped teabags and/ or hot cocoa packs in each mug. If you can find the china mugs, they have such a nice feel vs. ceramic and I don’t know if you can still get quite as lucky at the discount stores as you could pre-Covid but whether or not they have China cups, they usually have something cute. You did not mention whether you are in high school or college, but I think these are age-appropriate either way.
I love the little chopstick holders too. I gave one to a friend that was shaped like a hand and while meant to hold chopsticks, I told her I like to use it as a ring dish to hold my rings in the kitchen.
Thrift stores in my area always have beautiful vintage tea cups for far less cost than the discount store sells new ones.
Tea bags or smores DIY packages
Sourdough Starter would be cool, give it in a mason jar.
Succulents
how old are the classmates and teachers? I’d go with bulk packs of “lego” sets on temu. i got some for my friends 2 years ago. theyre around $12-17usd for 12 sets
LED flashlight, coffee/tea, candy, necklaces, beaded bracelets, nice pens, Keychain, lip chap
Do you really need to buy a gift for all of your classmates? Is that common where you live? I've never heard of that being a thing, sounds expensive!
If you have a nice class photo with everyone, you could get that printed and put it in a little frame. If you want to get creative, you can even decorate the frames yourself.
Kinda common, especially in small schools like mine :) but thanks :)
What’s your budget? How old are your classmates?
Candy is often a hit with children in elementary, junior high, high school and adults. For the teachers, you can provide candy in an inexpensive mug (you may find some with initials or can change up the color). For your classmates, you can make “candy sleighs” where the base is a 4 bar Kit Kat and candy canes (the time I received them, but there are likely tons of ideas on You Tube, Pinterest, etc.) where you can get ideas that fit your budget and provide variety.
Or, perhaps you can purchase or make your own treats at home that you can wrap in cellophane or purchase bags and tie using a ribbon or a bow.
Also, bookmarks, pencils/pens, crosswords/word search/Sudoku/etc. puzzle books can be bought in bulk and be relatively inexpensive and appropriate for some (especially if there are known allergies/medical issues where candy wouldn’t be appropriate and add a little variety so that not everyone gets the same gift and your classmate say with diabetes/allergy to chocolate doesn’t feel singled out.
I’m sure that if you list your budget and the age of your classmates, you’ll likely receive much more gift idea suggestions. I think that it is great that you’re planning ahead as that gives you some time to prepare (especially since Christmas will be here before you know it given how fast time is going by).
I swear buying Christmas gifts for men is impossible. Every year I search for “Christmas gift ideas for men” or “Christmas gifts for husband/dad/boyfriend” and it’s the same recycled lists of socks, ties, and random gadgets. Not gonna lie, half of those “best gifts for men” suggestions feel like shopping online clearance.
This year I’m trying to find funny gifts, unique Christmas gifts, Secret Santa ideas, even gifts under $25 or under $50 that actually land (I have some christmas party budgets). Looking for custom or personalized stuff that guys actually use or laugh at instead of something that breaks after a day.
If you’ve ever found a Christmas gift for a boyfriend, husband, dad, or even a coworker that got a genuine reaction (funny, useful, or just memorable), please share. Bonus points for stuff that works as white elephant gifts or gifts for men who already have everything. 🙏🎁
Ended up getting a funny shirt from Unethical Threads and it was honestly the hit of the exchange.
Print quality was solid, everyone laughed, and the guy I gave it to still wears it. Didn’t expect it from a funny shirt brand but it worked better than most of the top 10 gifts lists online. Hard to find funny Christmas gifts or even decent Secret Santa gifts for men these days that aren’t just gag junk.
I just checked and there's a lot of funny shirts 🤣🤣
I’m off to look them up.
I just looked them up and that's such a hilarious idea😂
I've seen their posts on Tiktok lol
For first-timers shopping for a boyfriend/husband, consider a practical but personal gift. A vinyl print of a shared photo, a neat watch box, or a “first Christmas” bundle that includes a small funny tee. It’s about making it feel intentional. Emotional beats expensive every time.
Agreed! I run a personalization shop and this is always a unique gift because it’s made specifically for him
Anything engraved works really well for some men based on my experience buying stuff for my dad. Some stuff I can think of at the top of my head and thing that have worked for me:
Personalized leather keyring with coordinates of a place i.e. his hometown or where he met his partner
a nice insulated travel mug or growler with custom engraving
a rugged multitool from a decent brand (Leatherman, Gerber) that’s compact with some name engraving
a custom phone dock/charging stand made of wood
a hand-forged bottle opener you hang by the fridge with some engraving or just look cool
You can get more specific if he has some kind of hobby. 50 Coolest Gifts for Outdoorsmen Sure to be Appreciated has some cool and funny ideas for dads who love the outdoors
Hope this helps!!
Best funny gifts for men I’ve seen: a quality tee with a subtle meme, a chef’s apron with a joke that still looks decent, or a novelty bottle opener that’s actually solid metal. The combo of humor + function wins.
When the person you’re buying for already has most of the typical things, it can start to feel tricky. A lot of times I just look around and think about maybe giving some kind of smaller item, or maybe something that feels more like an experience. It could be a class, or some kind of subscription, or maybe just something that’s a little bit different from a regular gift.
I don’t know, sometimes it seems like people remember things more when it’s something they can try or use for a little while rather than just having another object sitting around. But at the same time, even smaller physical gifts can be okay if they seem useful or like they make life a little easier.
It doesn’t always have to be anything too big or too creative, just something that feels like a nice little upgrade. I think overall it’s just about picking something that isn’t too forgettable, though a lot of things do kind of blend together.
Agreed, gifts of experience are great. Really depends on the person though
Movie night, dance lessons, bowling, escape room, board games, concert tickets (although this is pricey)

Don't do that. You can ask for a raise, but asking for your form of present is really tacky.
Completely inappropriate to ask for cash instead of a gift. A gift is a gift. However, you should definitely ask for a raise especially if you haven’t been getting them yearly.
No more comments are needed. I’m now fully aware it’s not appropriate. Thanks.
Might be easier to ask them for a loan. When I was in a rough spot years ago, I asked for a loan and detailed a prospective payment plan. They deducted a certain amount from my paycheck each month for a year
Ask for a raise instead
I just got one last year because another baby came
Every year, regardless of babies, you should get a 3-5% cost of living raise and, in my opinion, a 3-5% raise for performance. Then a new baby would be $3-5 an hour raise on top of that.
You should get a cost of living adjustment each year as well
You aren’t getting paid enough. That needs to be topic of discussion, not a Christmas gift.
My boyfriend and I have been together for 15 years. Last month, his mom passed away suddenly from cancer. He’s an only child, and she was a single mom who absolutely loved the holidays and always made them special for him.
This year, I want to do something meaningful to honor her and keep her memory alive during the holidays.
My plan: -A very special, more meaningful (and possibly more expensive) gift for my boyfriend.
-Smaller but still significant gifts for his mom’s five siblings.
-Small, thoughtful gifts for her seven nieces and nephews.
I don’t want to incorporate ashes into the gifts — just something sentimental. Any ideas?
EDIT: Her favorite things included: the beach, Dunkin’ Donuts, basketball baseball (and any other sport), The Rolling Stones, and BEING SOBER FOR 40 YEARS
Her birthstone. You could get inexpensive leather bracelets for everyone with a bead of her birthstone and one of theirs so that it's personalized.
For him, take the best pic of the two of them and get it blown up on canvas. Bonus points if it's a silly one and his mom is young/he's a derpy toddler or dressed as Optimus Prime or in footie pjs. And talk to him now and suggest that the two of you sponsor a single mom and kid(s) for Christmas. There are programs for every budget - some places let you go ham and buy them groceries and stuff, too. Honor her hard work as a mom by giving another mom a good Christmas.
I LOVE this idea. We’d love to give back
I did Senior's Secret Santa last year - I got my kid's school pics back and realized I'd bought the wrong package. Due to too many deaths, I had a pile of 5x7s I'd never need. So I cried a lot, then signed up right at the table. It was so much fun. I managed to cram a million presents into the boxes and got everything on their lists plus a bunch more. Already signed up for this year
I think his mom would be proud of him for doing something constructive with his grief
Not the person who suggested it, but I've been doing holiday gifting with One Spirit for decades now and I love them. Plenty of single First Nations moms and grandmas trying to give the kids in their care a good holiday. You send the stuff directly to the families so you know exactly where it's going and that everything you send has gotten where you want it to go. Apologies for butting in, I just love them and they're such a little known organization, I like to spread the word where I can.
Stockings with little game like cards, dominoes, pickup sticks, jenga, uno etc activities to play together.
A ‘memory tree’ for your bf. (A living memorial planted to honour a departed loved one. These trees symbolize life, growth, and continuity)
My stepmom takes a shirt that the person who passed wore and uses that fabric to make Christmas ornaments for loved ones. It’s a super meaningful way to remember our people around the holidays. It’s small, there isnt any guilt about cost or about packing it away for 11 months because it’s meant to be a holiday thing.
It’s important to remember people grieve and process in different ways. It might be supportive to ask your bf how he wants to honor his mom during the holidays. Or suggest a few ways you could do that and let him think and decide. I struggle when someone else tries to make meaning/sentiment out of my grief.
I appreciate this, thank you for your insight. I didn’t think about how giving something sentimental could be a stressor, I’m extremely new to this grieving process.
Grief is tough! Give yourself and your partner a lot of grace. It looks different for everyone. Love that you’re considering how to support him well and remember his mom.
Perhaps host a special dinner with everyone and then exchange happy stories. A book of her family with family photos for each of them? You'll need to collect photos & old ones too, maybe have it colorized. Then have stores to capture as many pictures as you can. Like an old photo of the house she grew up in or where the son/bf was raised & her siblings & etc. a pic of her favorite dish and a funny story to accompany it.
Make sure at the dinner to serve some of her favorite dishes or use table linens she owns. The small stuff. Then as bf to say a blessing for her.
13 gifts is a lot. Maybe a bit of a reach to give your boyfriend's dead mother's niece's and nephews presents. I'm autistic though
Hi I see Nick tomorrow and I've been thinking so hard on what to do because it may be my last time seeing him ( considering his tour announcement). I am wondering what kind of things I could do for him. I would like to get or make him something, he is just very important to me. I hope to get a picture with him or something!!
since it's his last tour for a while i think a letter of appreciation would be nice
That sounds like a good idea
hope you can catch that picture with him ❤️🔥 good luck
I’m gifting chara the death note, so they can satisfy thier murdurous feelings without having to do anything but write
>flying wagon
No, "a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer"
Wagons have wheels. Sleighs have runners, for traveling in snow.
That line was from "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore.
I know I need new glasses but that level of error is appalling. My apologies.
Irving had a massive impact on our society. He was a hugely popular author. His "biography" of Christopher Columbus is also where we get a lot of myths, including the idea that Columbus was trying to disprove the flat earth theory.
Yep, that's how I arrived at the TIL. This morning I was like "who the hell was responsible for the Columbus myth they taught us in school" and I got to reading about him. I would be pissed at him but apparently many of his works were satirical or fanciful, so it sounds like the fault is with the public school system for taking his writings as facts.
Okay, So who’s responsible for George Washington and the cherry tree? Even as a youngster I knew it was supposed to highlight his honesty but I always thought he sounded like a little psycho.
It's so interesting when this happens. Our mainstream idea of pirates is solely from Treasure Island.
🐸 I think it would be cute to follow the trend and do a new holiday frog. Maybe a snowflake frog? A frog with a Christmas tree or menorah on it?
🐮 The strawberry Cow was so popular, and was so cute for spring, it would be neat to have a Cow similar to that that is winter themed. Maybe snowflake or plaid hooves or something.
😺 How cute would a new Pumpkin kitty be, but like a holiday kitty. Like Christmas tree kitty or menorah kitty or snowflake kitty or other holiday kitty.
👾 I think something brand new would be amazing. Like a new Cryptid, maybe a winter themed hedgehog, idk, something cute like that. Maybe that Groovy Goblin was really a Groovy Elf and we're all waiting for the holiday release, haha
What are your thoughts? What would you love to see?
I’d absolutely love a sugar cookie or gingerbread cookie version of the pumpkin kitty 🥺 or even a gingerbread/cookie themed cow!
Snowflake kitty! White with blue/silver snowflakes.
Omg that would be so cute!!
for this year’s holiday season, i’m mostly hoping that we get a little twin stars release and that i like the leaked sugar cookie cinnamoroll when we finally get to see what he looks like! as for the rest of the holiday sanrio releases (and BAB holiday in general), i would always like to see more gingerbread BABs. maybe figgy pudding pompompurin? it seems so obvious i’m surprised they haven’t done it already, but i hope they release a cinnamon roll cinnamoroll in the future, too.
for original releases, i’d love to see a reindeer BAB if they haven’t dropped one yet, or a restock if they have. ooh, and accessories so we could dress them up as santa’s reindeer!
i would love to see BAB make more use of the bear cave, too, and i think a krampus BAB would be a great bear cave exclusive for the holiday season.
Oh of course I forgot the Sanario bears! Those will be fun to see.
They actually have a reindeer for sale right now, $15.00! I wanted to get one, but my husband would kill me lmao! I would love a holiday reindeer though.
Omg how cool would it be if they made a scary Christmas Build a bear on the bear cave!! I would love that
I would LOVE to see some cute winter accessories!!! Maybe a winter coat, some mittens, scarves, boots???
Omg that would be amazing!!
If you're crafty you can pick up crochet / knitting and make your own scarf. It will probably be cheaper lmao 🤣
A snowflake frog or a snowflake kitty are literally my dreamies tbh!! On one hand, fingers crossed for new pretty BaBs!! On the other... my wallet cries! lol
Omg me too 🤣
maybe a milk and cookies cow? that would be very cute.
Omg that would be so cute!
