Legal Car Tint Limits by State

TL;DR

  • Tint laws vary significantly by state, with different limits for front and rear windows.
  • Front windows typically have stricter limits than rear windows.
  • Some states allow exemptions for medical conditions.

State-Specific Tint Laws

Each state has its own regulations regarding window tinting, often specifying different limits for front and rear windows. For example, in Florida, the front side windows must allow at least 28% of light in, while the rear side windows can be darker, especially for SUVs and vans [1]. In New Jersey, you can legally apply limo tints (5% VLT) on all rear windows [5:1].

Interstate Travel Considerations

When traveling between states, it's important to know that tint laws generally apply based on where the vehicle is registered. However, some states enforce local laws regardless of registration, particularly for windshields [2:1][2:3]. While enforcement might be lenient for travelers just passing through, it’s wise to be aware of potential legal implications [2:4].

Enforcement and Penalties

The likelihood of being pulled over for illegal tint varies. Some users reported being pulled over specifically for tint violations, even when their tint was within legal limits [3:1][3:3]. In Virginia, tinting your windows below the legal limit is a class 3 misdemeanor, which could lead to jail time if caught repeatedly [3:2]. Enforcement can depend on the officer's discretion, and sometimes tint violations are added as secondary charges during traffic stops [4:3].

Inspection and Compliance

Tint compliance may be checked during vehicle inspections, but passing inspection does not guarantee immunity from tickets [4:5]. It's crucial to ensure tint applications do not cover headlamps or tail lamps and adhere to windshield restrictions [4:1].

Recommendations

For those considering tinting, it's advisable to stay within legal limits to avoid fines and complications. If opting for darker tints, such as 5% VLT, be aware of visibility challenges, especially at night [5:3]. Additionally, check if your state offers medical exemptions for conditions sensitive to light [5:2].

If you live in Florida, you know how brutal the sun can be — which is why so many drivers consider window tinting. It keeps your car cooler, protects your skin, and adds privacy.

But Florida has some pretty specific window tint laws you’ll want to know before heading to a tint shop:

  • Windshield: Only non-reflective tint allowed on the top 5 inches (above the AS-1 line).
  • Front side windows: Must let in at least 28% of light.
  • Rear side windows & back window: Sedans = 15% VLT or lighter. SUVs/vans = can be darker.
  • Reflectivity: Can’t be more reflective than 25%.
  • Medical exemptions: Available if you need extra UV protection (requires physician certification).

💸 Penalties for going too dark can include fines (up to $116) or being forced to remove/re-tint your windows.

I put together a full breakdown with details on legal percentages, medical exemptions, and tips for staying compliant here: https://wetting.io/blog/florida-window-tint-laws

Hope this helps any fellow Florida drivers considering tinting their ride. Stay cool, stay safe, and stay legal!

Do window tint laws apply to only the state your car is registered in, or all states that you visit?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/roadtrip · 6 years ago

Say I get my windows tinted within the lawful amount for my state where my car is registered, and then I visit another state where that particular tint amount is illegal. Am I breaking the law or not, since I am from a different state?

Laws apply to the place you're driving in. So, if you got them tinted to 27% VLT in South Carolina and head to North Carolina, that's a no go since they require 35% VLT. But, they might let you go if you're just passing through.

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect.

I think these laws apply to only registered vehicles of that state not those traveling through.

KristinaAwesome · 6 years ago

I dug deeper and, at least in my state of NC, the windshields don't matter where the car is registered but the others windows are based on the state the car is registered.

Unless it's ridiculously tinted, I doubt a cop would pull someone over for that alone. But if you got pull over for another reason, they might tack that on too.

No cop is going to waste time on a window tint ticket to someone passing through. It won't get paid.

"Moreover, the window tinting requirements do not apply to the following vehicle windows:

A window of a vehicle that is registered in another state and meets the requirements of the state in which it is registered. (There is no corresponding exception for the windshields of vehicles registered in another state. See State v. Schiffer, 132 N.C. App. 22, 28 (1999)."

Has anyone ever actually got into trouble with police for tint?

Posted by Hottjuicynoob · in r/WRX · 2 years ago

Going to get my windows tinted soon, wondering how likely I am to get into trouble if I go below my states legal limit. My state limits it at 25%, is this a good amount or should I go lower? What's the lowest you should go practically speaking?

I've had tint on my cars for 20 years in 5 different states. While 99% of the time it's merely a "add-on" charge to a ticket I was already getting (speeding, rolling stop sign, etc).. I did have ONE cop in Chicago pull me over specifically for the tint on my car (2005 nissan maxima). fucker pulled out a scraper from his glovebox and made me scrape them off my front windows there on the side of the road. real ball buster that one...

definitely a risk, but probably VERY small IMO.

FWIW: I still get 10% or lower tint on all my cars :P

FYI - It’s a class 3 misdemeanor in VA to tint your windows. You could face jail time if caught a second time.

No shot in hell a cop could ever force me to put a scraper to my window, I'd rather get arrested.

There is just no way it's legal to force someone to remove their tint on the side of the road

I’ve gotten pulled over for completely legal tint about 4 years ago. Have 35% on the front windows, he pulled me over in the morning on the way to work and was like “you know why I’m pulling you over today”. And I had no idea because I knew I wasn’t speeding. He used his tint meter to find out it was legal and he was like “the overcast weather must have made them look darker, I apologize” and I was on my way. He did compliment my car before letting me go, so that’s a positive lol

I'm surprised he let you go. But it's good to know some cops will admit they made a mistake and apologize. I want to get my windows tinted, but I know this will happen to me and they'll just lie that my tint isn't legal. XD

I've moved to Cincinnati since this happened and I've been here for almost 4 years and haven't been pulled over for tint... knock on wood (and I actually think my tint is illegal in Ohio, I think it's 50% here and mine is at 35% unlike Missouri). I think it just depends on the officer lol

My f-150… limo tint all the way around… 10% on windshield ( I was young ).

Camaro , Limo tint all around minus windshield

Subbie , 5% all around minus windshield

350Z , 15% all around minus windshield

I have my mustang now. 25% and I have yet to be pulled over !

Have had tint on multiple cars (in Ohio) and have never been pulled over for tint usually something else then they try and get you for tint. But just so you know if you do illegal tint you should just do it however dark you want there isn't a difference in fines for different tints illegal is illegal. So might as well go 5% all around lol

my states legal limit is 35 on front doors and back can be whatever. i have 20 in front and a few of my friends also do. none of us have been pulled over but my friend thats got 5 on his fronts has been pulled over. might be the same fines but tint thats not as dark is less likely to be pulled over from my experience.

Paying attention to the road includes making eye contact with drivers. It’s literally a part of drivers Ed and behind the wheel

It’s also not just about driving, but about when I’m walking. Don’t have the safety of an airbag and seatbelt, and ya might realize that being able to see if a driver is on their phone or not matters

Tint would only matter for inspection purposes for the following:

Cannot be applied over any headlamps or tail lamps. This includes the center high mound brake lamp (3rd brake light)

Cannot be below the AS-1 line on the front windshield (or no more than 3 inches from the top of the windshield if no line is present.) Now, it is allowed below that line if permitted by the DMV and must be marked on the vehicle registration.

Currently in New Jersey with a 07 VW Jetta if that helps.

Depends on the state you live in honestly and their regulations on tint. It sucks, but the majority of states w allow front window tint unless you have a serious eye condition (for which they have a dmv doctors prescription form for you and your doctor to fill out for tint clearance). It sucks for when you’re on the highway receiving bright led light from the oncoming traffic on the other side, but good news is most states allow more than 10% tint for the rear window and rear passenger windows. You can also go on sites like temu or aliexpress to buy very affordable blue light filters for your rearview mirror and side mirrors to filter out blue light as well as led light to help you see better on the road. Hope this helps!

Legally you can put 5% tint however I wouldn’t recommend that if you’re not used to driving with tint because it can be very dark at night without any lighting around.

I would go with 20%

Depends on the area. I’ve had 5% on 4 cars over 10 years now and never got a ticket for tint. Unless cops are complete assholes no one is pulling you over for tint, it’s usually a ticket you get after you speed or something, however when I get pulled over I make sure to roll my windows down lol

2 upvotes on reddit
tyranitar1234 · 3 years ago

It’s not going to be a primary reason to stop as they need to actually have a tint reader and be certified on it. So it’s a huge hassle, but it might be a reason to write you one instead of a larger ticket. Instead of a 10mph over ticket they will give you the tint ticket as it’s cheaper and easier. If your car was all to spec It would most likely just be a warning. Depends on the Ofc. and your driving record a lot of times. I would recommend 20% and just chilling from there. The reason why dark tint is hated by cops is you can’t see into the vehicle and thats how they get shot/hurt so it’s a safety and respect thing.

2 upvotes on reddit
famousbymonring · 3 years ago

Townie's might be limited on the but Highway will almost always have a tester ready to go.
A few % off legal won't get a primary stop with out a tester but even without a tester being that far under legal thats going to be an easy "from my experience I was able to tell..." Not saying you will for sure get pulled for it simply that being way under is like doing 90 in a 25 cop isn't going to need a radar to pull you for speeding.

2 upvotes on reddit
tyranitar1234 · 3 years ago

I feel like you are disagreeing and agreeing lmao. I was trying to state that if you went 20% you get the darkness you want and you don’t need to worry about being pulled over. When the officer pulls you over rolls windows all the way down turn your in cabin lights on and keep hands on the wheel until they greet you… 99% of the time they letting you go. Although WSP(state) officers can be a royal pain about anything. To be fair they can find 6 reasons at any point to pull you over and ticket

Im confused, it says "sedans will now have the same tint rules as SUVs and Trucks" Dont trucks and SUVs have lighter restrictions? Doesnt this mean its the opposite of a crackdown?

19 upvotes on reddit

NVandraren · 4 months ago

You are correct, this is the opposite of a crackdown:

> Before this bill, trucks, vans and SUVs could have darker rear tint than sedans, which led to confusion and unfair enforcement.

> With the new law, sedans can now have the same tint levels as other vehicles. The goal is to treat all drivers equally.

But penalties for illegal tint are higher and tint companies have to provide a certificate as well. You also have to roll down your windows when pulled over so the paranoid pork patrol doesn't get too twitchy and blow you away.

Would like to see tint rules enforced on HPD vehicles as well; being able to see through windows while in traffic improves safety for everyone involved.

Legal car tint limits by state

Key Considerations for Legal Car Tint Limits by State:

  1. Visible Light Transmission (VLT): Each state has specific regulations regarding the percentage of visible light that must pass through the window. Lower percentages mean darker tints.

  2. Front Windshield: Many states allow only a certain level of tint on the front windshield, often requiring a clear band at the top.

  3. Front and Rear Windows: Regulations can differ significantly between front and rear side windows, with some states allowing darker tints on rear windows.

  4. Medical Exemptions: Some states provide exemptions for individuals with medical conditions that require darker tints.

  5. Enforcement and Penalties: Be aware that enforcement can vary, and penalties for non-compliance can include fines or being required to remove the tint.

Takeaways:

  • Research Your State: Always check your specific state's regulations, as they can change frequently. Websites like the International Window Film Association (IWFA) provide updated information.

  • Consider Local Climate: If you live in a hot climate, darker tints can help reduce heat inside the vehicle, but ensure they comply with local laws.

  • Consult Professionals: If you're unsure about the legality of a specific tint, consult with a professional installer who is familiar with local laws.

Example of Tint Limits:

  • California:

    • Front windshield: 70% VLT
    • Front side windows: 70% VLT
    • Back side windows: No limit
    • Rear window: No limit
  • Texas:

    • Front windshield: 25% VLT (with a 5-inch strip allowed)
    • Front side windows: 25% VLT
    • Back side windows: No limit
    • Rear window: No limit

Make sure to verify the latest regulations for your specific state before applying any tint to your vehicle!
