What Redditors are Saying

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Which to Choose?

TL;DR

  • MacBook Air: Best for portability, basic tasks, and longer battery life. Ideal if you prioritize a lightweight design and don't need high performance.
  • MacBook Pro: Better for intensive tasks like video editing, programming, and gaming due to its active cooling, superior display, and additional ports.

Performance and Cooling

The MacBook Pro is equipped with active cooling, which allows it to maintain high performance during demanding tasks like programming, gaming, or running large models [1:1]. This makes it more suitable for users who require sustained performance over long periods. In contrast, the MacBook Air relies on passive cooling, making it quieter but potentially less capable of handling prolonged heavy workloads without throttling [3:3].

Portability and Design

The MacBook Air is lighter and more portable than the Pro, making it an excellent choice for users who prioritize mobility and ease of transport [4:1]. Despite being slightly heavier, the Pro offers better build quality and additional features like a higher refresh rate screen and more ports, including HDMI, which can be crucial for those frequently connecting to external displays [3:3], [4:10].

Display and Audio Quality

The MacBook Pro boasts a superior display with 120Hz refresh rate, mini LED technology, and better speakers, making it ideal for media consumption and creative work that demands high visual fidelity [2:1], [4:8]. While the Air's display is still impressive, it doesn't match the Pro's capabilities in this area [3:3].

Longevity and Value

For users concerned about longevity and value, both laptops offer good build quality, but the Air might provide better value for money if your needs are less demanding [3:1]. The Air's lack of moving parts (like fans) could mean fewer potential points of failure, although the Pro's superior performance may extend its useful life for power users [3:2].

Use Case Considerations

  • MacBook Air: Recommended for general use such as browsing, writing, and light photo/video editing. It's also suitable for students and professionals who need a reliable, portable device without the need for high-end performance [4:1], [5:5].
  • MacBook Pro: Ideal for professionals engaged in video editing, software development, or any task requiring sustained high performance. Its enhanced display and audio make it a great choice for media professionals [5:4], [5:1].

Ultimately, the decision between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro should be based on your specific needs, budget, and how much you value portability versus performance.

ORIGINAL POST

Hey everyone,

I’m torn between two MacBooks and could use some advice. I’m deciding between: • MacBook Air 15” (2025) • M4 (10-core CPU / 10-core GPU) • 24GB RAM • 512GB SSD

VS • MacBook Pro 14” (2024) • M4 (10-core CPU / 10-core GPU) • 16GB RAM • 512GB SSD

My main uses are: • Light gaming (mostly League of Legends and similar titles) • Programming and software development • Working with LLMs (locally running small models, testing APIs, etc.)

I love the larger screen of the Air and the extra RAM, but I know the Pro has active cooling and a brighter display, which could make a difference long term.

Which one would you go for, and why? Any thoughts or real-world experience would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Air can handle LoL just fine. I gave Warthunder a try on my M4 air yesterday, and it was hitting 150 fps without a problem. League and similar titles should run splendidly.

Light gaming (mostly League of Legends and similar titles) • Programming and software development • Working with LLMs (locally running small models, testing APIs, etc.)

This would indicate you probably should go for a Pro, because of the active cooling that can sustain performance for long periods of time for these tasks

That said, an Air can do all of this too. And the Air has an advantage for LLMs, which is the 8 GB extra memory, which is helpful

Which MacBook to buy- MacBook Air 15” (M4) or MacBook Pro 14” (M4)?

Posted by Claudia_ava09 · in r/macbook · 1 month ago
post image

I’m going back to university soon to study law and looking to buy a MacBook mainly for studying— note-taking, reading, writing essays, etc. I won’t be doing anything super demanding like video editing or coding. I’m leaning towards the 15" MacBook Air, since I want a decent-sized screen and at least 512GB storage. But once I upgrade the Air to 512GB, the price is pretty close to the base model 14" MacBook Pro (M4), which already comes with 512GB.

Prices: MacBook Pro 14” (M4) - £1449 MacBook Air 15” (M4) - £1199

Now I’m stuck deciding: -The Air is lighter and more portable, which I like. -The Pro has a better screen and speakers, and might last longer performance-wise. -I know I don’t need the power of the Pro, but the Air upgrades are expensive, so I’m wondering if it’s smarter to just go for the Pro. I want something that’ll last me at least 5 years. I don’t want to overspend if it’s not necessary, but I also don’t want to regret my choice down the line. If anyone’s used both, how do they both compare day-to-day? Is the Pro noticeably heavier or bulkier? Just trying to get the best value for what I’ll be spending.

If you can afford it get the Pro. Everything is better, screen slightly smaller, with HDMI as well! I have an M4 Pro MBP 14 and havent had portability issues. The 15 inch air isn't that much lighter.

I'm in the same exact boat as you. I'm leaning towards the Pro because the screen and speakers are better, the battery life is longer, and the keyboard felt more comfortable for me in a side by side comparison. Also, I hook my MacBook up to an external screen quite often, so having the built in ports without needing to use an adapter is clutch. The 1" screen size doesn't make much of a difference.

Since the price is close, and the Pro is so powerful, I figure I may just get the bells and whistles so it lasts me a longer amount of time.

My current 2017, Touchbar MacBook Pro is still going strong after 8 years of daily usage. This new MacBook will replace that eventually.

MacBook Air vs Pro

Posted by Bravoobsessed6 · in r/macbook · 3 months ago

Hi there, I currently have a MacBook Pro, but it’s over a decade old and I’m been having issues with it lately. I use it for email, checking websites, and occasionally stream shows on it. I’m looking for recommendations on whether I should get the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

The most important thing to me is that the laptop lasts for as long as possible, as I can’t afford to buy a new one in a few years with medical bills I have so I want to make sure I make the right decision. Does one last longer than the other?

Thanks! (Sorry in advance if these questions r dumb)

Build quality is good on the Pro and the Air. For your needs the Air will be more than adequate; the Pro does have a better screen with better refresh rates available, but for the things you’re doing you’re unlikely to notice, and the Air screen will still more than likely be better than your old Pro’s screen. Also as the Air is passively cooled it has zero moving parts (other than the lid hinges and the keys), so is marginally less prone to failure than the Pro which has a fan.

It’s not dumb. The main differences between the Air and Pro are:

  • The Pro has a fan, and the Air does not (which means the Air is quieter than the Pro, but it also throttles performance if it gets too hot)
  • The Pro has an HDMI 2.1 port built into it, and the Air does not
  • The Pro has a 120Hz/HDR/VRR screen, and the Air has a 60Hz/sRGB screen
  • The Pro has optional Pro and Max chips available BTO, which have more RAM and larger GPUs
  • The Air is lighter than the Pro
  • The Air is cheaper than the Pro
  • The Air and Pro come in slightly different sizes (13" and 15" for the Air, 14" and 16" for the Pro)

The Air isn’t good for PC gaming, editing feature films or TV series, or 3D content creation, but it’s perfectly fine for your use case (unless you cannot live without HDMI 2.1 or HDR on the internal screen), so I recommend the Air.

The Air is also much cheaper than the Pro. I can get the base M4 MBA for £900. The Pro is almost double...i could get another Air in 5 years' time, and the Pro will have to last for almost 10 years for the same value. (excluding any inflation)

5 upvotes on reddit

That’s a really good way of looking at it

I used to be the person who max out their Apple computer when speccing one out. Thinking that is best for value. But since the M series chips came out, I have flipped that on its head…especially when M4 comes with base 16G or ram. I have a M1 with 16g of ram at work and it’s still fine. I bought a M3 with 24g of ram, 512 SSD for less than a base M4 MBA with 16/256.

I’ll use that for 5 years and then get another one then, put the £1k saved in an account, in 5 years I’ll use that money to get another MBA…with the interest I might even get even more RAM.

This approach I think keeps me with the latest tech more, better value, and keep up with the support by the OS. My 2012 maxed out Intel iMac lost support for a lot of the apps and stuff near the end of its life and that wasn’t fun. Besides the CPU, other things like the ports speed was outdated. So it’s nice to get a newer machine with new ports too.

Going forward, base model (perhaps slight RAM bump if required), is my plan.

Cannot decide between Macbook Pro or the Air?

Posted by ItWasDoneOnFirstTry · in r/macbookpro · 19 days ago

I’m thinking about getting a MacBook, but I haven’t had a laptop in like 10 years (my last one was an Asus). I mainly just want something I can use anywhere, not stuck at a desk. I do a lot of browsing, watch Netflix, and some light media stuff no gaming. I also don’t really store a lot of videos or photos. Some friends told me the MacBook Air is nice because it’s lighter and easier to carry around. But another friend, who’s used the MacBook Pro heavily for years, says the size difference isn’t that big and the Pro has better performance and display. Money isn’t really an issue, so I’m just wondering which one people who’ve used both would recommend.

Definitely get a MacBook Air , get 15 inch -16-24gb ram will be perfect for you and as much storage as you you need 512-1tb? , the m4 air is more than capable of anything you will use it for , don’t get sucked into the “pro” it’s really for professional video editing and music production? For your use cases even the very very base air would be more than enough, hope that helps

You're telling him not to be fooled by apple marketing when buying a pro but you do the same thing. I wouldn't choose an M4 Air over an M1 Pro even if the newer chip was twice as fast. They're around the same price too. The compromise on cooling system, refresh rate, ports, etc. are not worth it.

Agreed that OP should go for the Air, but as their use case includes watching videos, I’d at least try out the Pro. The screen and speakers are much better, so if that beats portability for them, and price isn’t an issue, then the Pro could be the way to go.

I got the fans going on the Pro playing Cyberpunk on high graphics settings, not as loud as my old windows laptop. My wife has the air, and it is indeed entirely silent.

The Pro has just delivered solid performance out of the box since I got it a few months ago.

I’ve had both. For what you described you should definitely get the air.

For most things you aren’t going to notice performance difference between pro and air unless you program or do media editing.

Basically if you have to ask likely the air is the better choice for most users. Exceptions would be you like display of pro better, or speakers. Otherwise most users aren’t going to notice.

Air is completely silent because of no fans. With the M4 pro chip I’ve never heard my laptops fans.

I do notice the pro is thicc. I think most users will like form factor of air better. I know several friends who have choice for work and they pick air since it’s more portable.

MBA vs MBP for browsing and light photo/video editing

Posted by sidewinda98 · in r/macbookair · 1 month ago

As the title suggests, I’m about to make a decision as to whether I should purchase a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. I’ve done a fair bit of research on which one might suit me best and I’m leaning towards the MacBook Air 16gb/512gb. My main uses for the MacBook would be standard browsing, writing, photo editing and some video editing. I’d also like to dabble in programs like Logic and Blender. The improved image quality and ports on the Pro are almost swaying me to get that instead. I have only ever used my iPhone for browsing and photo editing but I’m starting to find it a bit annoying and would like the flexibility of doing it all on a MacBook.

I just wanted to post here to get some more opinions on what may suit me best based on the info I’ve given. The MacBook Air is just within my budget, the Pro would be pushing it a bit but I could buy it with a bit more saving.

TIA

Macbook Pro vs Air... PLEASE HELP ME

Posted by ResidentSwimmer3070 · in r/macbookair · 2 months ago

Hey everyone,

I’m currently using a 2019 Intel MacBook Air and thinking it’s finally time to upgrade. I’m looking at either the new MacBook Pro M4 (14") or MacBook Air M4 (15"), both with 24GB RAM.

I’m still a student and planning to use this laptop throughout university. Probably gonna do like 80% of my work on it — writing, research, streaming lectures, running tons of Chrome tabs, maybe some light editing, and just general multitasking. I usually have an external monitor plugged in too.

So yeah, wondering what the main differences are between the two, and which one would make more sense long term. I know the Pro has better performance and a fan, but not sure if that really matters for my use case?

Any advice would be appreciated!

They were decent ( batteries were long gone)... Apple laptops have a good lifespan.

For what you said you will be doing BOTH machines will be MORE than enough.

With the Pro you get better ports, probably better speakers (but since you are looking at a 14 pro the 15 air MAY have better speakers) you also get a higher refresh rate on a pro screen (120 vs 60)

With the air you get a quieter machine (no fans) - lighter may be more portable even though it's a little bigger and then yes you get a slightly bigger screen.

Comparing 13" to 13", I'd say if you have one to go to an Apple store nearby to try out the Touch Bar on the Pro. If you like it, get the 13" Pro. If not, the M1 Air should work just fine. I wouldn't worry about weight much, they're pretty similar-weighing laptops.

The simplified answer is that the Pro is bigger and heavier but is faster in any heavy workload, so if you need performance then get the Pro. If you need portability then the air is the obvious choice.

Personally I dont think the air is worth it because if considering the M2 air then for a small price increase you can get the base Macbook Pro 14 which is faster and has a better display.

Hey everyone, So lately I’ve been considering upgrading from my 2014 Macbook Pro to one of these two MacBooks. I would also like to add that I am a school student in my final year and I plan on using the MacBook I will buy for a good couple of years. Not less than 6 I hope. I do not do editing or any heavy tasks that require a powerful laptop but I really am into future proofing as much as I can while remaining within my budget. Despite everything I have said, I still do not quite know which MacBook out of these two I should go for. I need some assistance here. Thanks :)

Big difference people often forget: MBP is actively cooled, MBA not. So extended workloads are handled better by the MBP, as it can cool itself better.

Just a heads up - the high refresh rate on the MacBook Pros is worth looking at. I use high refresh rate devices everywhere else in life, so going from 120+ everywhere else to 60 hz on the MBA can be jarring. If you’re in a similar situation I’d take that into account.

Considering the price difference is $110, and for that $110 you are getting:

  • higher refresh rate screen
  • more ports
  • brighter screen
  • better processor

I would say the M3 black MacBook is the easy choice here. For only $110 more it’s a pretty good deal over the M2 air. The only real downside is you lose like 1 inch of screen but it’s not really that crazy especially if you have external monitor.

absolutely, Air can't sustain more than a few minutes. If you do anything slightly heavier it drops performance by up to 50%. I think exporting a video (which would fit in heavier) reaches the thermal limit in 2 minutes. Only 2 minutes.

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro

Key Considerations:

  1. Performance:

    • MacBook Air: Generally equipped with lower-end processors (M1 or M2) suitable for everyday tasks like browsing, word processing, and light photo/video editing.
    • MacBook Pro: Offers higher-end processors (M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2 Pro, M2 Max) for more demanding tasks, such as professional video editing, software development, and graphic design.
  2. Display:

    • MacBook Air: Features a Retina display, but lacks the higher brightness and ProMotion technology found in the Pro models.
    • MacBook Pro: Comes with a brighter Liquid Retina XDR display, offering better color accuracy and contrast, ideal for creative professionals.
  3. Battery Life:

    • MacBook Air: Excellent battery life, typically around 15-18 hours depending on usage.
    • MacBook Pro: Also offers great battery life, but the Pro models may consume more power under heavy workloads.
  4. Port Selection:

    • MacBook Air: Limited ports (usually 2 Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports).
    • MacBook Pro: More ports available (up to 4 Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, HDMI, SD card slot), providing better connectivity options.
  5. Weight and Portability:

    • MacBook Air: Lighter and thinner, making it more portable and easier to carry around.
    • MacBook Pro: Heavier and bulkier, but offers more power and features.

Recommendations:

  • Choose MacBook Air if you need a lightweight, portable laptop for everyday tasks, casual use, and you prioritize battery life and cost-effectiveness.
  • Choose MacBook Pro if you require higher performance for professional work, need a better display, and can benefit from additional ports and features.

Ultimately, your choice should depend on your specific use case and budget. If you often engage in resource-intensive tasks, the MacBook Pro is worth the investment. For general use, the MacBook Air is an excellent option.
