TL;DR
Mazda MX-5 Miata
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is consistently mentioned as a top choice for an affordable sports car. It's praised for its driving experience, lightweight design, and handling capabilities [1:1]
[2:5]
[3:1]. The Miata is often recommended for those looking for a fun, classic roadster feel without breaking the bank. It is available new within budget constraints and is considered one of the best true sports cars in the market under $50k
[3:1].
Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ
The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ are also popular recommendations for affordable sports cars. These models offer a balance of performance and affordability, making them suitable for those seeking a sporty driving experience without excessive power that could be difficult to handle [2:4]
[3:1]
[4:1]. They are noted for their low horsepower, which helps keep insurance costs more manageable compared to higher-powered vehicles
[2:8].
Insurance and Maintenance Costs
It's important to consider insurance and maintenance costs when purchasing a sports car, especially for younger or first-time buyers. Sports cars typically come with higher insurance premiums due to their performance capabilities [2:1]
[2:3]. Additionally, repair and maintenance costs can be higher than those for regular vehicles, so it's crucial to factor these expenses into your budget
[2:3].
Other Recommendations
For those with a slightly higher budget, options like the Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z, and Volkswagen Golf R are worth considering [5:1]. Used models such as the C6 Corvette and Porsche Cayman can also provide a thrilling driving experience at a lower price point
[3:1]
[3:4]. However, it's essential to ensure that any used vehicle is thoroughly inspected to avoid costly repairs down the line.
In conclusion, while there are several affordable sports cars available, it is crucial to weigh all associated costs and choose a model that fits both your driving preferences and financial situation.
I'm 25 and my budget is around 10k dollars I'min middleeast tho so If you knew a specific one that's avaliable here I would really appreciate that
You can find decent Ford Falcons and Mercury Comets from 60-65 in that ballpark. May or may not have a V8 but fun lightweight cars.
Middle East is about US cars. Plenty of Caprice, Cadillac, Suburbans etc. in good condition. Problem is that people will not be selling their cars for that price. Unless you find a desperate seller.
ME is rarely abt. UK cars. Those are collected by British expats.
You can find C4 Vettes in this range.
First generation BMW Z3
If you are little flexible on that price, you can probably find a nice Miata/MX-5. Certainly not a muscle car, but I understand they are a lot of fun in the twists and turns.
They are pretty much all you need for what is effectively a small 2 seater roadster, in the British old style. Brilliant little car, and they are built for not slowing down in corners.
Hi everybody! I'm looking for a sports car that's under 15k that would be a good first car. I need to drive it everyday to high school, and sometimes other places. I love cars and this is a big thing for me so please help me out here!
Speaking from experience (I'm 18), just get an inexpensive, reliable car to start with. Your insurance as a teen is already going to be insanely expensive and throwing in a 15k sports car on top of that is going to cost you more in insurance than the car itself. Stick to finding reliable, common, easy to repair cars that won't cost you a fortune in expenses you aren't factoring in. Sports cars require more expensive parts to repair, and sports cars can come with more complicated designs that make working on them harder for shops and they'll upcharge you for that too. They'll also guzzle your gas like you shotgun a beer lol. And they may require a higher grade of gas, again, more money. I don't mean to squash any teen spirit but you're going to feel so bad when you finally get a sports car you want and it turns out using it costs you more than its worth. Just, don't fall into the cool car trap. My first car was a Nissan SUV, not exactly my dream car but it was so liberating to have, even though it's unassuming, and just a little personal sorry to attest to what I'm saying, I've been the sole reliable driver in the family, Everytime one of my brother's BMW's or Mercedes needs repair, I'm always there to give rides. My car? Takes 1 day and I send it into Walmart while my mom works on my day off, never need days of rides to get my car repaired like everybody else's. Also, once you have a reliable car, nothing is stopping you from working towards a car you really want later down the road, I'm planning on purchasing a project car soon, and once it's done, it'll hardly cost me a dime on the insurance because its an unassuming, slightly older, used car that would cost them like 2k to cover entirely lol.
Agree. A sports car is not going to be a great place to start if you don’t already live and breathe cars, and have the financial support of a parent to insure and maintain one.
GR86, or some other low hp car like that, otherwise insurance will be high af
Miata.
Miata or MR2
MR2 is a horrible rec for a new driver. They are prone to snap oversteer
Says the guy that doesn't even own a sports car.. It's not only a perfect first sporty car, many people get them after owning other high end sports cars as well, just because of how good of a driving experience they are.
What high schooler has the money to repair a sports car out of pocket? Lol
Can you find an 86 for 15k?
If you’re in the U.S. - have you considered the insurance costs of owning a sports car? Even something like a V6 muscle car will probably be real expensive to insure. Not to mention repair costs, practicality, the odds of you getting into an accident… it’s not a very beginner-friendly type of vehicle
I’ve been looking for a couple months for a new car but I can’t seem to choose from all the choices out there, so I need help on finding a car. The only requirement is that the car is still being produced I don’t care if it’s new or used. I don’t have a specific taste in cars.
I swear, some of y'all have no idea what a sports car is.
“Miata” 💔
Mustang gt s550
Used corvette obviously. Next question.
Could probably get a nice C7.
You can probably get a lightly used new Z with 400hp and a manual
Yeah the Zs have been going down in price pretty recently.
check pm
Miata and BRZ/GR86 are available new in your budget and are the best true sports cars on the market till you get into the $50k+ range. Mustang worth a look for the power, but it’s too heavy IMO o be considered a true sports car.
Used I’d go Cayman or C6 Corvette.
Best Cheap Sport-Adjacent Cars
This list should just be fun affordable cars. I hate to have a “what is and isn’t a sports car?” Arguments but the turbo Mazda 3 is not a sports car. It’s fun and fast but it’s just a fast version of the Mazda 3. Other hot hatch and hot sedan cars have a lot more differentiating it from the regular model besides a more powerful engine.
Yeah I think there is a difference between a sports car and a sporty car. I bought a sonata n line and it’s fun and sporty but definitely not a sports car
There needs to be a scoring system for sports cars over base models. Hopped up engine, uprated suspension, bigger brakes. Additional scoring for suspension geometry/components, chassis bracing, and transmission setup.
fun is a strong word for the mazda 3 too. it's just fast. good car, but as an appliance that can merge quickly. the engine is wheezy and transmission is not responsive enough to forgive them dropping the manual option.
To many Average Joes and Janes with little to interest in automotive performance, I feel any two door coupe is a sports car, and anything with four doors is not.
So a base Honda Civic Coupe is a sports car. A Kia Forte Coupe is a sports car. A BMW M3 is not a sports car (but a M4 is). A Mercedes E63 AMG is not a sports car.
Also a BMW M4 is just as much a sports car as a Lotus Elise because two doors. Sure it’s bigger, but a Lincoln Town Car is also bigger than a Honda Civic Sedan and both are notasportscars.
Yeah, Miata and FRSBRZ86, that's it, those are the two cheap sports cars. OK, I'd be willing to stretch the definition to the base Mustang just to make certain people angry haha.
But the rest have too many doors, are a hot hatch, or aren't really cheap.
But the rest have too many doors, are a hot hatch, or aren't really cheap.
Conclusion: sports cars are now a luxury item. They always were insofar as it's always been a luxury to own a car whose priority is driving pleasure rather than basic utilitarian transportation. But now they're really priced that way. Make the same list from $50K-100K and the list grows. From $100K-200K it grows again. It's about the same for $200K-300K. And once you go over a million dollars there are more sports car options than any other price point - the caveat being that "over a million dollars" is a very wide range. But I'm not breaking that range down.
Beggars can't be choosers in 2025. Especially with the tuning potential of some of those platforms, who cares how many doors they have if they perform? I mean hell, the mustang is based on the fusion platform, and yet it is plenty fun. Number of doors a sports car do not make.
I drove base rental Mustang and couldn't wait to be back to Civic Si
I know the definition of "sports car" is open to interpretation but I'm not sure a FWD Civic SI or Jetta GLI really qualify.
This is just a list of every slightly sporty car under 50k. Complete clickbait
looking for a sporty car that's under 25k like the title said this would be my first car with any type of performance, and I dont want something with too much power that I cant control, but I also want something quick.
I've never drove stick before so id want an automatic.
This car would also be my daily car, so i want something that can be reasonably used as a daily vehicle, gas mileage matters but my current vehicle gets terrible gas mileage so pretty much anything would be an improvement
Miata, brz/frs, gti, civic si
Honda Civic Si, Subaru BRZ, Nissan 370 Z, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Volkswagen Golf R, Toyota GR86.
Forgot about the g37/370z, that's also a good option
Yeah, there are all pretty good options really just depends on what one you like best and price.
Missing the C5/C6 on this list.
Mustang
Used GR86
Get something with a stick and learn, it will be so worth it.
I've driven regular family cars/hand-me-downs for the last 10 years and want something sportier. I'm more interested in aesthetics than pure performance since I won't be taking it to a track much...I just like admiring pretty cars haha.
Here are my criteria:
Preferences but not mandatory:
Used Mustangs and brz/86 seem to fit some of these, and I like how they look despite how different they are.
Thoughts? And any other suggestions I might be overlooking? Thanks!
Focus ST.
If you want AWD, a Mazda 3 Turbo AWD hatch. Not a coupe tho
The focus ST are fun cars but the ecoboost engines aren’t the most reliable. The transmissions are dog shit if you get an automatic, tho the stick was standard and they were ok. OP prefers automatic tho and is looking for reliability and aesthetics and and not much for speed so I’d say it’s not the best match
Look at a Scion FRS, they are identical to the toyota 86 and brz, but they are cheaper because Scion is not very known.
Which is funny cause Scion is just Toyota under their former "Younger" Audience brand before they just dropped that branding.
Interesting - had it on my radar since I knew it's the same but didn't think it'd be a major price difference. I'll take a look, thanks!
Listen I'm going to say it.
Get a sporty hatchback.
GTI, Mazda3 something like that like sure it's not sleek but it gives you so much more as a daily driver, storage and movement, it's FWD so it'll do wonders in the winter and snow. The DSG Automatics are great. (Downside is when it goes you replace the whole transmission but with the rise of CVT's that's now commonplace.)
Now Maintenance is the big one, if you take care of it properly and follow the German Demands. (it will last you.) The worst things in life is buying a Euro car that's been trashed and failed to be properly maintained. But by god when they have been they're great.
Easy working on something for maintenance but however be warned that more and more technology is put in the machine so you need the readers to properly read, diagnose, clear and fix the issues.
NC PRHT
Please get the manual, It's so much more fun.
2013 Mustang GT. Bought mine for 19k. It's a must in the manual. You will never get tired of it and is very reliable!
My car was totaled a couple weeks ago and I'm getting roughly 7.5k from insurance. I'm looking for a car that is ideally 11k or under. I would absolutely love a WRX, but unfortunately they are difficult to find and often too expensive, and also not cheap enough to run with my current income. So I'm looking for more budget options that will be affordable to drive but maybe pack a little more punch than my old car (2008 outback). Currently I'm looking at the Impreza and Lancer as potentially interesting cars, but am open to other suggestions as well. I want something that will be capable on snow and dirt roads but still feel a little sporty. Is this possible with such a low budget?
Check out used Subi BRZ, Toyota 86, or Scion FRS. They are not the fastest cars, but are fun, cheap little sports cars. Also maybe a used v6 or Ecoboost Mustang.
Yeah I don't need fast, just want something fun and capable. Thanks for the suggestions!
Mazda3 hatch MT
automatic NB miata lol
Won't work as well in Montana I don't think :(
Why would a FRS work then?
Mini Cooper JCW. Should be able to find one in that price range. My mother absolutely adored hers. She typically drives Corvettes (has had C4,C5,C6,C7s now) but she raved about how good the handling was and how well it accelerated when you put your foot down at highway speeds. They’re really fun little cars.
What are some of the best budget sports cars?
Budget around $10,000. Just wondering what some of the best overall sports cars there are for this price range. I just want to get something mildly sporty that won’t break every month, or need a gas refill after 3 days. Honda Civic SI seems to be my top pick as it’s somewhat sporty, reliable, and fuel efficient but I just wanted to ask if there are any other options that people know about (both used and new obviously).
Honda Civic Si
Mazdaspeed3
Mazda MX5 Miata
Saturn Sky
Saturn Ion Redline
Chevy Cobalt SS
Toyota Corolla XRS
Toyota Matrix XRS
Pontiac Vibe GT
Toyota MR2 Spyder
Acura RSX Type S
Scion tC (best models are 2011+)
Ford Fiesta ST
Man I would LOVE an RSX but every one I find has been beaten to death or has 200k+ miles
200k on an RSX? That thing's just broken in.
Miata is the obvious choice, but I'm going to suggest an unconventional answer:
Fiat 500 Abarth. It's a straight-piped, turbocharged go-kart. Drive one, it's hilarious.
Can get a good used one for $10K. Is it more reliable than a Civic Si? No, but I will fight anyone that the Abarth is more fun.
Miata or MR2 Spyder
Love my Spyder. Really nice that most of the drivetrain parts are interchangeable with a Corolla keeping costs down.
Echoing peoples comments on the Si. If you can find an 8th gen Civic Si with the K20, they’re really fun cars. Problem is 8th gen Si’s are usually pretty beat up so its hard to find clean examples.
The Si probably is the best choice.
The saturn ion redline and chevy cobalt ss are fairly slept on if you want something unique. Build quality isn't as good as a honda, but they are probably cheaper.
You might be able to find a high mileage ford fiesta ST around $10k
Miata Is Always The Answer.
I mean there's videos and posts galore or people "traded in my mustang/porche/baby for a miata/mx5. And honestly if you can fit, there's literally not a better road sports car on the market present or past.
Genuinely curious and thought this would be the place to post. Thanks.
86 and Miata are really the only viable answers here.
Define affordable lol, off the top of my head probably some BMW 3 series models or dodge chargers
Hard to call a charger a sports car
Does it have to be new? If not I’m gonna go with a c5 vette.
He says incredible performing; I would say the C6 Z06. Can be had around 30. No base model corvette fits “incredible performance” IMO.
Brother, people are talking about Miata’s and 86’s… a c5 is a higher performer than both of those.
The base C6 is quicker around a track than a C5 Z06.
Hyundai N cars.
Underrated, Veloster Ns are honestly impressive vehicles
Yes. A Veloster N has better steering and tossability than an M2 and an Elantra N will match or beat your M340i around a track.
How do you define sports car? The Civic SI is often called a “sports coupe/sedan”.
My immediate response to your question is Mazda Miata. I did a late night drive from Nashville to Atlanta last month driving a brand new Miata, and it was probably the most fun I’ve had in 10 years driving.
How’s the visibility when driving a Miata?
Hey everyone! So, I'm thinking about upgrading the ol' whip and I've got a soft spot for sporty cars or even sporty-looking SUVs. I'm definitely the type who enjoys the thrill of driving and wouldn't mind testing the new ride out on a track. Anyone got any cool suggestions? Preferably with 3 doors? Bonus points if it's not a nightmare to maintain or find parts for in Europe.
MX5 ND2, GR86, Lotus Elise, Porsche Cayman / Boxster. More or less sorted by maintenance budget :).
Hot hatches: GR Yaris, Renault Sport Megane mk3, Hyundai i30N.
Two car garage MX5 + Fiesta ST mk8 ? Edit - or less sensible but even more fun: entry level Caterham + what ever is left on a hot hatch, e.g. a solid mk5 GTI.
Lots of options as 40k is a reasonable budget for this.
C6 Z06. Surprisingly practical as it has the big hatch in back
I was going to say: there's one obvious answer at this price, and it has an LS7.
I take BRZ over stinger, unless it's freezing, when I am going out alone or with just 1 person. Stinger is a fun car too but doesn't handle so well as BRZ and the steering feel is not as engaging, it's still much faster.
Focus RS 🧐 a bit over 300hp awd hot hatch. Very mod friendly as well
Not a sports car. Not that reliable either unfortunately
Have the frs and big agree. Such a fun car for the price
Mustang gt 5.0
Very reliable engine. Be ready for a stiff transmission. But yes you can get a very clean 2011-2012 mustang gt for way less than 40. Less than 25 even. That’s 400+ hp in a car that won’t leave you stranded.
Add some thicker rear tires maybe 295, a decent exhaust, tune it to run e85, you’re looking close to but not quite 500hp at the crank. That’s faster than a lotttt of cars out there.
I wish they would bring the ecoboost to India. There is only the v8, which costs nearly 100k used for a 3-5 year old, 15k miles. Not affordable at all. I love the design, and a 6mt droptop ecoboost would be soo cool to have. Ford isn't here anymore, saving up for one of the v8s now.
or a BRZ if you can find one.
Stinger is a good option, but it's worth pointing out that the Stinger isn't really a sports car. Nothing wrong with that mind you, but I wouldn't really call it a competitor to anything listed above.
That said, it totally fits with the OP's needs, but it just feels weird seeing it listed after Elises, Caymans and MX5s.
