What Redditors are Saying

Natural Remedies for Bloating

Bloating can be an uncomfortable and persistent issue, often related to diet, gut health, or hormonal changes. Here are some natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments that have been discussed to help manage bloating:

Herbal Teas and Supplements

Peppermint tea is frequently recommended for its soothing effects on the digestive system and ability to relieve bloating [1:1], [2:4]. Ginger, whether consumed as a tea, tincture, or fresh, is also noted for its effectiveness in stimulating digestion and easing bloating [1:2], [3:1]. Other herbal options include chamomile tea, which has anti-inflammatory properties [4].

Dietary Adjustments

Adjusting your diet can play a significant role in managing bloating. Some users have found relief by avoiding gluten and processed foods, while others suggest trying an elimination diet to identify specific food sensitivities [3:3], [3:4]. Incorporating more fiber into your diet can also be beneficial, although it should be done gradually to avoid exacerbating symptoms [5:3].

Lifestyle Changes

Managing stress and incorporating gentle physical activities like yoga or tai chi can support digestive health and reduce bloating [2:1], [5:4]. Additionally, practices such as fasting or consuming easily digestible foods (e.g., chicken, rice, cooked vegetables) may help reset the digestive system [5:1].

Gut Health and Detoxification

For those experiencing chronic bloating, addressing gut health through probiotics, detoxification methods like activated charcoal, or working with a naturopathic doctor could provide insights and relief [3:2], [5:2]. It's important to listen to your body and consider professional guidance when necessary.

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While these discussions offer valuable insights, it's crucial to remember that individual experiences with bloating can vary widely. If symptoms persist, consulting with healthcare professionals to rule out underlying conditions such as SIBO, histamine intolerance, or other gastrointestinal issues is advisable.

I’m dealing with period but also digestion related bloat and wondering what works for you guys. So far I’ve tried ground fennel seeds and it’s helped a little bit.

Ginger! Ginger tea, or a big hand of ginger blended with a cup of water and filter out the solids - I add a big splash of that to sparkling water or juice. Ginger can help stimulate your small intestine motility and get food moving faster through your system. Ginger can also ease pms cramps!

Peppermint and fennel tea is always a hit! Add lots of fibre, lots of water, stay clear of ultra processed foods. Trying gentle walks and warm compresses too! Always helps shifts and soothe

I also wanted to say fennel!! Fennel tea, fennel through your food :) it really helps with gas in your stomach, as well as anis. If it’s more about your stomach and gut flushing well together, I would go with dandilion root. Dandilion for the stomach

Ginger can also help but can be flushing too aggresively if you’re sensitive

Many things can help with bloating but it depends on why you’re bloated. Gut microbiome dysbiosis can be affected by hormones. Perhaps some red clover tea can balance your hormones.

But bloating can be a thing of its own and is often one of the first signs of a gut that’s off balance. It can be diet, stress, infections and many other things. Often quite hard to find a solution for unfortunately. Peppermint tea can help. Or cold infusions on marshmallow root. If it’s stress then lemon balm is great.

It’s definitely some sort of gut imbalance, but I eat really healthy, no processed foods and lots of vegetables, so I don’t know what else I can do diet wise. I only really bloat during my period and maybe it’s just unavoidable bc it’s hormonal and the hormonal changes during your period slow down digestion and make you retain water so I’ll try a digestion blend and we will see

Would anyone have any recommendations for natural remedies besides probiotics that help them with their endo bloating ? Mine gets really bad where it almost looks like (or I feel) I’m pregnant. It can happen even after I eat fruit or drink. So anything would help ! Thanks !

I can totally relate to this!! Magnesium (there are sprays, capsules, powders, epsom salt baths-- whichever is easier/more appealing works) is great.

In the moment, I like twisting yoga poses/classes, loose clothes, easy to digest foods, teas like peppermint or ginger, and avoiding caffeine (makes mine worse).

If you notice it particularly after certain foods, avoiding those may help prevent it (if you haven't already) or even trying with your tolerance of those things. Most of the time it's not an all or nothing scenario (exception for celiac disease and allergies). There's usually a tolerance we can have, especially with fruit when the problem tends to be with the form of fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAP). I'd try that!

You may also find tolerance changes depending on where you are in your cycle, too. So it may not be something you have to avoid for ever, just at certain times or decreasing at certain times. This is definitely true for me!

Agreed with everyone else's suggestions. You may also want to consider gently detoxing your gut. Sometimes I'll take activated charcoal capsules on an empty stomach. They latch on to any toxins (including nutrients! So take it well in between meals) and can help reduce bloating

I think It's more about what you remove than what you add :)

For example, try to remove cow dairy (goat is ok!), sugar, cereals/bread/pasta, and junk food in general! And maybe try taking some kefir and black seed oil!

Look at the foods you’re eating. Chronic bloating can be related to many things, but it’s often food sensitivities or SIBO (which needs testing). For chronic bloating I recommend booking with a naturopathic doctor.

🔥 Always Bloated? It Could Be Gut Inflammation 🔥

Posted by legitgiveaway · in r/GutStrong · 2 months ago

That heavy, gassy, uncomfortable feeling after eating isn't always about what you ate, it’s often about what’s going on inside your gut lining.

When your gut is inflamed, even “healthy” foods can trigger issues.

Signs of gut inflammation:
• Constant bloating or discomfort
• Food sensitivities you didn’t have before
• Low energy, brain fog, or random mood swings
• Acne or skin flare-ups

Here’s how to cool it down naturally:
🥬 Eat more anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, turmeric, and flaxseeds
🧉 Sip on ginger or chamomile tea instead of coffee for a few days
🧘‍♂️ De-stress, cortisol wrecks your gut lining
❌ Cut back on sugar, fried food, and alcohol

Your gut can heal, but only if you give it the chance.

What if you only really experience bloating after drinking water? Especially if you drink alot of water?

2 upvotes on reddit
legitgiveaway · OP · 2 months ago

That happens to a lot of people. If you’re chugging a lot at once, your stomach can feel super full and bloated. Try sipping it slowly instead. Also, if it’s cold water or you're drinking it right after a meal, that can make it worse. Could be a sign your digestion’s a bit off too.

I know binge drinking on an empty stomach caused it.

Do these symptoms sound familiar? If so, how did you stop them?

Posted by Yeh_whatevs · in r/Microbiome · 4 months ago

Hi everyone, been reading this sub with interest. I know everyone's experience is different but I'm interested if people have had similar issues with me and how they managed them.

I've suffered from daily bloating for years. My thing is, the bloat is manageable early in the day but becomes intolerable by night-time after having dinner. I'll generally feel lethargic, irritated and gassy for hours after dinner - which of course makes me great company at dinner parties /s. Alcohol doesn't help -- but neither does cutting it out entirely. It doesn't seem to make a significant difference whether I have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner or not. I've tested negative for SIBO, negative for fructose malabsorption and lactose malabsorption. I'm not sure I have a handle on an entire list of foods that trigger symptoms -- but I know the bloat / gas is very quick to arrive after eating rich food -- like high-sugar sweets, desserts and baked goods. I'm also wary of glutinous Asian food that uses soy and sesame oils, anything deep-fried, anything with a lot of pastry like pies and sausage rolls etc. And garlic and onion... But even after cutting these things out, my tummy is still straining at night -- even from eating innocuous things like small bowls of rice with canned tuna. I've tried the low-FODMAP diet -- yeah, it helps a bit but only a bit. My diet is pretty darn healthy -- eggs, spelt bread, spinach, tomatoes, meat, fruit and veggies, rice. Only use olive oil to cook... Very little take-out or processed food... Dairy is at a minimum, just milk with tea. Only real vice is morning coffee with biscuits and a bit of sugar in tea/coffee. But I'm also a bit anxious that I've screwed up my gut more by cutting out so-called trigger foods -- and that I really should be eating things like broccoli, cauliflower and yoghurt....

So I feel like my whole system is just rebelling at something but I have no idea what. I suspect I may have an imbalance of bad bacteria versus good. And the good guys just don't seem to stand a chance these days... I don't know what to do and I've seen a succession of doctors and "specialists" who never offer any remedies apart from: try the low-FODMAP diet, eat smaller meals, try meditation, sleep more, exercise and drink loads of water. Yeah, that's all great but it doesn't stop the bloat...

Have also tried daily digestive enzymes but don't notice any benefit. I don't really know enough about probiotics or prebiotics to have tried them, though.

If you've been in a similar place and found a breakthrough, I'm virtually willing to try anything -- whether it be vitamins, medicinal weed, antibiotics or whatever....

Thanks for sharing your experiences / tips.

You’re not alone. I have similar symptoms and haven’t had any luck either. I am currently working on balance my gut bacteria and then working with my naturopath to kill the bad guys & candida that showed up in my GI map. My advice is to listen to your body. If you can, test under the guidance of a naturopath who you trust, and hang in there! It’s a journey that has been constantly testing my patience and acceptance of my condition.

Yes. After years and years of dealing with this and trying to figure it out, i used A.I. to dial in a resolution and it has worked incredibly.

I learned my body was desperate for predictable, gentle fuel. I had always focused on an ultra-healthy Mediterranean diet with loads of colorful variety. Apparently, my body is too sensitive for that.

The solution has been a mix of fasting and a very plain gentle diet with slowly adding foods in. So to heal my stomach for weeks I ate only chicken, potato (or rice), and fully cooked zucchini and carrots. My fasting schedule meal times are 1030am, 2pm, and 5pm. With no eating other times and a solid fasting window. Slowly add foods and track bloating after a few weeks of giving your gut time to heal.

Bloating remedies?

Posted by kiearrrnnnnn · in r/lactoseintolerant · 7 years ago

So I basically went on the pescatarian / non-dairy diet about 6 months ago because I’m both lactose intolerant and prone to joint issues. Cutting out dairy and red meat seems to have been helping with both.

I’m pretty strict but not super strict with the dairy, I’ve been able to eat baked goods and other things that are cooked with a little milk / butter in them, but I never eat these things in abundance and I rarely eat them to begin with (cookies, etc). These have been literally the only dairy I’ve consumed in months and it feels good.

So it’s been months with no substantial dairy intake and I’m assuming my intolerance is much worse now. I ate something with chocolate in it today that must’ve had a LOT of milk in the chocolate because I’ve got the classic bloating and gas pains back with a vengeance. Just curious, are there any home remedies anybody has for this or do I just stick it out like I used to in the past? It’s really bad this time :(

Gotta say, feeling this again makes me very glad I cut dairy out so much... I’ve really enjoyed not feeling this way for 6 months.

Personally,

I've found walking helpful, when you can; it's uncomfortable but it jiggles everything the right way to seem to get the air out somehow ~ also stretching, or laying on your right side and rubbing your stomach in circles [I've found clock wise best personally]

It does, however, depends on if it's hard bloating and I just feel stuck; then the belly rubbing works, to soft just very air filled, then I try and at least pace a little bit to see if I can get anything moving.

This is what I do and it works great.

I usually take some gas-x or pepto to help with the bloating symptoms. I don't really know if these qualify as "home remedies" but I've tried everything from special yoga moves to spices and drinks and nothing, for me at least, works as well as those pills.

Bloating and digestion, water retention

Posted by Ambitious-Honeybun · in r/herbalism · 3 months ago

Hi everyone. I am a big believer of certain herbs being able to help some medical issues (in the past, this has not always been the case for me, as I tried to use herbs to treat a really serious issue lol, and that did not go too well). But I'd get to get some advice on this since it's more benign.

I have been dealing with bloating and water retention constantly for the last 2 years. I used to bloat even when I had a severe eating disorder and was eating a lot of raw foods. Now that I have a higher weight, more steady menstrual cycle, and eat mostly cooked foods, I still experience this very annoying issue. It does get worse right before my period as expected, however I feel like month-round, I deal with bloating and water retention, and I assume this must be linked to digestion issues.

Could anyone here advise on some tips and tricks I may do? I have started taking fennel tea, crushing the fennel seeds before steeping. I'm not sure how to really fix this problem long term. Any of you experience the same? Thank you all for the patience reading this.

Bitter plants can help greatly, centaury is great and kinda neutral. Artichoke leaf can be a good help to. You can have them in pills if the taste is too strong. Bitterness will help stomach + liver + pancreas + bowel movement.

Then you might want to throw some aromatic herbs to kill the excess of bacterias. They contain essential oils that regulate the bad bacterias and leave unharmed the good ones. So can add some cumin, caraway, cardamum, fenugrec, fennel, etc... to your dishes.

Just make sure to take it easy with thyme, muscad, cinnamom since they're the most powerful and can irritate your stomach and severe and your liver.

Ofc make sure to eat easy stuffs like poatotes and carrots, avoid drinking big quantities during meals, dont mix too much different foods, avoid quick sugar and alcohol.

I used to combined fresh ginger and pineapple juice and drink a cup first thing in the morning, one at midday, one before dinner and just before bed. I used a 7 oz cup and it was enough. It helped a lot while I was able to tolerate it-I had found it online. If I can remember correctly I would grate (you can put it in a processor or blender both work fine) 1 1/2 lbs of fresh ginger -place it in a strainer (lined with cheese cloth) over a pitcher filled with 1 bottle 64 oz of 100% pineapple juice. Begin to press the ginger juices through the cloth-you just want to prevent the fibrous pieces from getting into the pitcher, all of the soft stuff is ok. The more you put in, the spicier it will be. Squeeze the cheese cloth at the end to get the rest. Discard what’s remaining. Stir the pitcher and refrigerate until needed.

Note: If you have a very acidity stomach I don’t suggest this drink. Maybe as your doctor first. Currently I use GasX and Beano.

Key Considerations for Natural Remedies for Bloating

  1. Dietary Adjustments:

    • Avoid Gas-Producing Foods: Limit intake of beans, lentils, broccoli, onions, and carbonated drinks.
    • Eat Smaller Meals: Consuming smaller, more frequent meals can help reduce bloating.
    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to aid digestion and prevent constipation.
  2. Herbal Teas:

    • Peppermint Tea: Known for its soothing properties, it can help relax the digestive tract.
    • Ginger Tea: Ginger can reduce inflammation and help with digestion, alleviating bloating.
    • Chamomile Tea: This can help relax the digestive system and reduce gas.
  3. Probiotics:

    • Incorporating probiotics (found in yogurt, kefir, or supplements) can help balance gut bacteria and improve digestion.
  4. Physical Activity:

    • Regular exercise, such as walking or yoga, can help stimulate digestion and reduce bloating.
  5. Essential Oils:

    • Peppermint Oil: Can be used in a diffuser or diluted and applied to the abdomen to relieve discomfort.
    • Fennel Oil: Known for its digestive benefits, it can also help reduce bloating.

Recommendation: Start with dietary adjustments and incorporate herbal teas into your routine. If bloating persists, consider consulting a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions. Keeping a food diary can also help identify specific triggers for your bloating.
