Subnautica Sea Emperor Lore

Sea Emperor's Role in the Storyline

The Sea Emperor is a crucial character in the original Subnautica game, playing a significant role towards the end of the storyline. Players encounter the Sea Emperor in a facility located deep within the Lava Zone, approximately 1200 meters below the surface [2:1][2:2]. The Sea Emperor communicates telepathically with the player, guiding them to find a cure for the Kharaa bacterium. This interaction is vital to completing the game's narrative.

Location and Habitat

In the lore, the Sea Emperor was originally found in the void, a vast and dangerous area surrounding the main map, where it could fend off Ghost Leviathans and feed on plankton [5:2][5:4]. The PDA suggests that they lived in herds and would migrate to the shallows for feeding [5:4]. After being captured by the Precursors, the Sea Emperor was kept in captivity to produce Enzyme 42, which was believed to be the cure for the bacterium [3:1].

Juvenile Sea Emperors

Once released, the juvenile Sea Emperors spread across the map, growing and thriving in various biomes [4:1][4:6]. They are known to have a calming effect on their surroundings, reducing aggression from other creatures [5:6]. This dispersal reflects their natural behavior of migrating between different environments, possibly as part of their life cycle [5:9].

Subnautica: Below Zero

In Subnautica: Below Zero, the Sea Emperor does not appear in the final release. Early versions of the game included references to the Sea Emperor, but these were removed as the storyline evolved [3:1][3:3]. The developers decided to focus on new leviathan species and story elements, leaving the Sea Emperor out of the sequel [3:6].

Speculative Biome and Behavior

There is speculation about the Sea Emperor's original biome before capture. Some suggest the crash zone or the void as potential habitats due to their size and dietary needs [5:1][5:5]. The idea of nurseries is also proposed, where Sea Emperors might lay eggs in shallow waters, providing protection until the juveniles are large enough to survive independently [5:12].

ORIGINAL POST

I got the message from sam that said i was the only one thats within range of an emperor population, so i went online and i've spent 3 hours searching ingame and online but it always says different places. im in lilypad region right now but im not finding any? please help

l4zydumb4ss · 5 years ago

I've also read that sea emperors can be found in the lilypad islands region on the fandom wiki but have never seen them there (my guess is that the sea emperors probably have been there in an earlier version but the Devs decided that it would be too cramped with the Glow Whales also residing there and the fandom wiki entry just hasn't been updated yet). They are actually in the arctic now which is just east to the lilypad islands region and sometimes you can already spot a sea emperor when you're leaving the lilypad islands region. The artic is just bare plains so you'll know you're there when you've reached nothingness. As far as I remember they swim around a 100m depth so watch out that you don't swim over or under them and miss them.

So I got a telepathic message that scared the crap out of me, So where she is? I marked the lava zone entrance with the beacon. It's at a very large chamber with a sea dragon around (approx. 1200 meters deep). Do I have to go Deeper?

There's a chunky hole in the lava zone that you have to go down, and you find her facility. Not going to spoil the game, but you need a few things along the way first.

They 100% were in the older version of the story, after you had sent the sample of the Frozen Leviathan to the Vesper you needed to go to a Sea Emperor in the Artic to get the Enzyme

I did this and right after that the story was incompleted, and then they scrapped it

5 upvotes on reddit
Zorgzong79 · 5 years ago

I think they were removed because the old storyline needed the enzymes, but the new one doesn't. I wouldn't be suprised if they added them back in tho. When they were in, I think there was 2 in total.

Yeah I believe they’ve been temporarily removed.

They used to have a voice line asking you if you’d come to play the first time you swam past one.

I would imagine the void. She looks like she'd be able to fend off ghost leviathans, and she presumably eats plankton?

41 upvotes on reddit
oct0boy · 2 years ago

Every thing just kinda goes into a chill vibe around sea emperers so no need to fight ghost leviathans

26 upvotes on reddit
intrusiereatschicken · 2 years ago

It could've also been the impact of the ship that destroyed everything there. We can't really know for certain. In the case that the biome(s) there was(were) destroyed I don't think it would've been deep enough for the emperor's to thrive in.

7 upvotes on reddit
El_Bobbo_92 · 2 years ago

According to the PDA, she would live in herds in the void, and come to the shallows for feeding on microscopic organisms

94 upvotes on reddit
C
Cepterman2101 · 2 years ago

I could imagine with it being the biggest leviathan, the void would be the only suitable option in a matter of size. But if we consider what we need to make the eggs hatch, it could be possible that they were wandering around all biomes and didn’t have a specific biome to live in (which would make the life in captivity even more cruel).

266 upvotes on reddit
S
Soft-Pixel · 2 years ago

It’s probably the latter considering that after you hatch the eggs the juveniles all start hanging out at different points around the map

92 upvotes on reddit
Jayccob · 2 years ago

But there is also the concept of nurseries. It's not uncommon for fish to live in the open ocean, then come to shallow waters to lay eggs. The young either held straight to the open waters or hang out in the shallows where to provide defense from predators until they get large enough.

42 upvotes on reddit
Ashton_Umbrilem · OP · 2 years ago

It would explain why there was so many different creatures from different biomes the architects just tried to make her feel comfortable trying to get the cure quickly

143 upvotes on reddit
landartheconqueror · 2 years ago

It could be both. They spend their adult lives in the void, but migrate to the crater to rear their young.

8 upvotes on reddit
Basethdraxic · 2 years ago

Or maybe somewhere different of the planet, I can see the precursors maybe finding one on another part of the planet and dragging it to the volcanos crater

2.2 lore bomb shells: Imperator and Leviathan.

Posted by Lanhai · in r/wuwa_lore · 5 months ago

We need more lore enjoyers to discuss what just happened in 2.2! It's so weird to me like what happened to Carlotta's story about 2 divinities and the combination being the true form? That was just a lie brought out by Leviathan?

I was really hoping that the fish one was going to be the good guy and the horse the bad one, remember do not trust the horse? What happened to that?

Another thing I don't understand is Imperator's apparent connection to the sea when I'm only seeing wind powers from the horse? Why is Cetus and Lorelei/the other mermaids connected to Imperator?

Where does the story go from here? I'm still so suspicious of what has happened but it seemed very straight forward.. I don't know, what do y'all think?

I think there's defo some lingering questions that will need to be addressed and resolved in 2.4+

IMO, I think the horse /is/ the Sentinel and the Imperator, but maybe everytime we've talked to Imperator, it has actually been the Threnodian talking? they were merged together for so long, maybe the Threnodian has been playing the Imperator like a Puppet. and now they've been released or something and are hiding inside of Cartethyia, waiting to re-emerge ?

2 upvotes on reddit
Tricky_Dragonfly5530 · 3 months ago

The Cetus/Imperator connection is explored more along the "Old Man and the Whale" event that Kuro made permanent (minus the special rewards). In one of the questlines, Phoebe translates ancient tablets detailing how Cetus was originally a guide for souls killed on the sea into the afterlife. However, Cetus would rage and cause immense storms, so Imperator built the Lighthouses to calm him and named him guardian of the seas and master of marine life.

I may not be using the exact terms, but the reveal is after you get the last lighthouse lit through the three gifts to the ghost at the crab shrines.

1 upvotes on reddit
Lanhai · OP · 3 months ago

I meant more like why is Imperator who is all about the wind and is basically a pegasus so related to watery creatures? They seem to make more sense being connected to Leviathan/the hybrid of the two.

I don't really want spoilers of what's next just advice on whether I should do it now or not ?... hope that makesense ... thanks

Also Em163 CrackPoint, which implies he comes out of a crack like Nu Udra can, which likely means it doesn't have an Ammonite shell as some have depicted him with.

Credit goes to Cola, once again. Once we get a BUNCH of stuff, I'll make a masterpost of stuff all compiled together, but I wanted to make sure people see the most important stuff as it comes out.

Lot of breeding and consuming their young? Or maybe there used to be a lot more there that they already ate. Sea emperor being the sweetheart she is may have let them have a nibble every now and then from her. Most likely scenario though is >!that the aliens that went digital found a way to sustain them all, most likely through the peeper vents or some alternative food source!<

Key Considerations about Sea Emperor Lore in Subnautica:

  1. Species Overview: The Sea Emperor is a colossal creature, one of the largest in the game, and is part of the alien species known as the "Emperor Leviathans." They are characterized by their long, serpentine bodies and bioluminescent features.

  2. Role in the Ecosystem: The Sea Emperor plays a crucial role in the ecosystem of Planet 4546B. They are believed to have a significant impact on the local fauna and flora, particularly in relation to the lifecycle of the Sea Treader and other species.

  3. The Quarantine Enforcement Platform: The Sea Emperor is integral to the game's lore surrounding the Quarantine Enforcement Platform. It is revealed that the Sea Emperor was captured by the Precursors (an ancient alien race) to study its ability to produce a substance that can cure the Kharaa bacteria, a deadly infection threatening the planet.

  4. Eggs and Reproduction: The Sea Emperor lays eggs, which are found in the Sea Emperor's containment facility. The player can interact with these eggs, and the lore suggests that the Sea Emperor's offspring are vital for the continuation of their species.
