TL;DR The new Nintendo Switch model offers significantly better battery life compared to the Switch Lite, primarily due to hardware improvements. The Switch Lite is more affordable but sacrifices battery longevity for portability.
Battery Life Comparison
The new version of the Nintendo Switch boasts a substantial improvement in battery life over both the original Switch and the Switch Lite. This enhancement is attributed to newer, more energy-efficient chips [1:3]. Users have reported that the new Switch can last up to 5-7 hours on a single charge
[5:1], whereas the Switch Lite typically lasts around 3-4 hours depending on usage
[5:1]
[3:1].
Hardware Differences
The Switch Lite uses a slightly different chipset (Tegra 214 vs Tegra 210) and LPDDR4X DRAM memory, which provides some battery boost [1:6]. However, the regular Switch's larger battery capacity (4310mAh vs. 3570mAh for the Lite) and its ability to run cooler contribute to its superior battery performance
[2:1].
Consumer Considerations
Despite the battery differences, the Switch Lite remains appealing due to its lower price point ($199 vs. $299 for the regular Switch) [1:5]. It caters to consumers looking for a portable and less expensive option to play Nintendo games
[2:5]. However, users should be aware that the Lite lacks certain features such as detachable Joy-Cons and TV docking capability
[2:7].
User Experiences
Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the Switch Lite's battery life, especially when playing demanding games [5:1]. Others have found it adequate for shorter gaming sessions or travel
[5:2]. The improved battery life of the new Switch model has been well-received, allowing for extended playtime without frequent recharging
[4:3].
Ultimately, the choice between the Switch Lite and the new Switch depends on individual preferences regarding budget, portability, and gaming needs. For those prioritizing longer battery life and versatility, the new Switch model is the better choice.
I appreciate them publishing this, but could not see why they would. A lot of people will start to wait, since the battery life difference is HUGE. Also a lot less heat for MK11 and other hot running games. Most consumers will not make the less heat connection until after using, but will get the battery life difference that was published.
Seems they would have not mentioned it, rather than publish and expect consumers to buy a now “inferior” version. Seriously, the battery life difference is huge.
It can also impact Lite sales, but if more regular Switches are sold, they have the same overall install base and make more money selling peripherals with the regular Switch...... Perhaps that is why they published, to seed that in folks heads. The Lite price will lure new customers that would not have purchased the original Switch due to price or size. Announcing the new Switch will also lure new customers as well, due to much more battery life.
I’m one of the latter, so will get the regular Switch when released. None the less, seems Nintendo will see a big sales dip until the Lite and new Switch version is released and rely on others not knowing, to sell current Switch inventory.
After all the conjecture above, I still have to say their candidness about the new improved model is refreshing.
Edited for clarification.
One of my biggest questions is if the “new” switch is if it’s gonna have the better battery life advertised on the box, or is it just going to look like the rest. What’s it going to look like when me as a consumer walks in to target to buy the one with the better battery life? Am I going to look for a box, or are we going to have to look at serial numbers to tell?
They had to switch chips they were using. Newer chips are more energy efficient.
>Seems they would have not mentioned it, rather than publish and expect consumers to buy a now “inferior” version.
It comes out about a month after being announced... no big deal.
>It can also impact Lite sales
Doubtful. The battery life on the lite is still good, and the form factor is for a completely different consumer.
>I’m one of the latter,so will get the regular Switch when released.
Ok. Doesn't this answer your post?
Not to mention that the Lite is 2/3 the price. That alone will drive sales.
I got chips
They announced a switch lite with a little bit different chipset (Tegra 214 vs Tegra 210) and LPDDR4X DRAM memory, both grants some battery boost to the console.
New revisions of original switch get the same hardware improvements just to optimize their production. Basically it's not improvement made for players, it's improvement made for facilities, on which switch is produced. That's all.
Then why list the battery life? The result though of over 50% more battery life and a cooler running device are pretty significant benefits for the consumers. Have you played MK11 or Red Faction? They run comically hot on the current Switch.
...So people will buy it? Why would they not list a highly marketable improvement to the revised model?
This is probably not going to be common knowledge amongst the general Switch-buying public. I would be shocked if your average mom was informed well enough to know or care about the difference in battery life on the Lite vs. the new model, and especially the old model vs the new model. They'll walk into the store and see $200 and $300 price points and make a decision based on that.

That being said, I'm glad that they announced it because I have enough extra money to afford a trade in and upgrade, so I'll probably do that. They wouldn't have gotten my sale otherwise, so it's at least working on some people.
Very easy to forget that people here are not "average consumers". The few (even if counted in thousands) people that will hold off to hunt for the revised model will not impact the sales in the grand scheme of things, where millions of units get sold yearly.
Because different people want different things. Simple as that.
I've been seeing a lot of confusion about the differences between the new Switch Lite and the original Switch. I made this chart for our discord but share here as well, hope it help clear things up. The info here has been simplified, and highlight the most popular misinformation.
Nintendo also has their own comparison page here: https://www.nintendo.com/switch/compare/

Nice, comparison. I find Nintendo Switch Lite a nice addition for people that are looking for alternative and cheaper option to play Nintendo games on. Hopefully this will bring more people to this awsome console.
Something I don't see mentioned by anyone is the fact that the Lite can't charge Joycons on its own, so you have to own a normal Switch or the charging grip. Buying joycons + charger brings the price a lot closer to the normal model.
This is what I was thinking. Take out the price of the dock and it’s almost the same price. Plus, if you bought 3rd party joycons, which have all the same features (or rather lack of features) of the attached ones on the lite, and take out the price of joycons, you save even more! Just buy a refurbished console only switch, and then buy the accessories that fit your play style and you’ll save money and have a better system.
I guess we'll see.
But it's like a lot of their consoles - they seem like they price them so you feel stupid for buying the lesser one and just spend up.
I mean, let's be serious here. For $100 less, you are making a ton of compromises. Maybe if it was $149 like /u/Kiefer_XJ said, there's an argument. But you have to be a fool to buy the Lite.
This was a way for them to avoid dropping the price on the real Switch. For the price we want, we have to vote with our dollars and not buy the Lite...which rewards Nintendo by letting them keep the regular Switch at full price when it should be getting a drop.
I know this might be redundant, but can you add in whether the Switch Lite has micro SD card support?
I do think $199 is a slightly harder sale then it could be. The issue for a family is that beyond that initial price point, games are now $50-60 instead of the 3ds $30-40, so total investment just to play Pokemon at retail price is $260 out the door. At $180 or so you could at least get that magic cost to start playing point under $250. But there will be sales, bundles, etc, so it might be fine.
It will be interesting to see what happens during the holiday though, since the Switch was often bundled with a game/discount last year. They'll obviously do the same if not more this time, so without a Lite bundle the holiday will be an awkward time period.
theres no way that would ever work lol. no one would buy the lite. only die hard nintendo fans
Depends on the user really. I've been a happy Switch owner since launch, but given the option back then I would have absolutely preferred this. Save $100 in exchange for dropping features I never use anyway? Sign me up.
The new 3DS XL was great and has a big game library. Nothing is exiting about this switch lite. 150€ and it would have been way better IMO. or even 180€.
Honestly in Australia it’s only $50 extra for a regular switch, the price is ridiculous for how much has been cut out.
Very much so, the battery of the normal switch is 4310mAh while the switch lite is 3,570mA. So the screen size plays a large part of the battery life being slightly better.
How long does the battery life usually last for you when playing this game on Switch Lite?
I have an OG switch and get about 2.5 - 3 hours out of mine. The battery life on the light is 800 mAH smaller than the switch (3500 vs 4300). I would guess around 2 to 2.5 hours on the switch light!
Hope this helps :)
light actually has better battery then og becasue it has a more efficent cpu
I’d say about 4 hours? Hard to tell as time flies when playing the game!
I find I have to charge my Switch Lite about every 3-4 hours & it depends on how bright I have my screen (battery lasts a little longer when the screen is dimmer)
Just bought my switch lite a month ago, I was thinking of heading to the park but I feel like I get 10 Minutes into BoTW and already at 40%, I'm gunna try playing with the brightness but just wondering what everyone else was getting

Edit, about to time test it out, 100% battery, 90% brightness, BoTW
Like it went from 100% to 40% in 10 minutes? The fuck?
The Lite at a absolute minimum should last 3hrs period.
Have v2 Switch, 2019 one that comes with extra battery life. I can say it's really, really good, much better than I expected.
Haven't played much BotW yet but for any other game I played like Odyssey etc. it's a beast. I can play all evening and it'll still have some juice by bed time for some ACNH action. What you describe here is completely alien to me, probably there's something wrong with your battery.
Yeah something is wrong bro. Even my launch switch can get like 2 or so hours of botw at 80% brightness
I have a v1 switch as well, for botw I only get ~1.2 hr at 20% brightness/airplane mode on...
How'd you keep your battery life as mine degraded a lot over the past 3 years?
Nornally in airplane mode I guess. Can normally clock 2 hours with brightness up at a normal level. The newer model switch its apparently almost double the battery life but I never have over 2 hours to play portable in a row anyway so it's OK for me.
What the hell? 40% drop in 10 minutes or even a bit more shouldn't happen at all...
Are you sure you didn't buy refurbished one or something?
new from best buy
now that I think about it, I actually got a broken charger from the box, I didn't really care about it cause I had a few other USB-C Cables
Hmm I kinda doubt it would be the chargers fault but please whatever you do don't use third party charges because you're running the risk of bricking your Switch. Nintendo Switch is a bit finicky thing when it comes to charging and if you look up the horror stories of people using third party chargers and docks you'll see it's not nice thing to risk especially because many games don't support cloud save data.
Try charging it again but this time play it somewhere cool like inside your house and at maximum brightness and see if it will do the same thing. If it happens again then it's probably something wrong with your switch. I would recommend you to buy another, transfer the profile from your old one to the newer one and return the faulty one.
You could also opt in for Nintendo to repair it BUT it could take few weeks AND you're running the risk you won't get the same device back and will get a refurbished one, thus all your saved data lost...
Why didn’t you get a refund? Even if you had other adapters, that’s still not cool to get a broken part when it’s brand new. Don’t just let it slip by when you can get it taken care of
Not that long :/ (how u doing at Botw?
Haha. I loved the feeling of being free in the game and that you just can explore.
Do you let it hit 0% before you recharge it? What are your opinions?
I have a switch Lite bought in December and yesterday just played Pokémon arceus during a 3 hour trip on a train. When I poser off the console It was with a 39% of battery with the Bright set on the middle. I am very happy with this console on general terms, including the battery.
The move from Switch V2 (or even original Switch) to switch lite was huge for me, the battery life is much worse on games like Binding of Isaac.
Yup! One of the reasons I ended up buying a regular switch too. Used to let it hit 30% and then on the charger.
Physical limitations...
i charge it usually again at 10-20%
I just got a Lite and I’m amazed how bad the battery life is! It’s like 3-4 hours if you are playing a 3D game. My OG gray joycon Switch from 2018 is like 5-7 hours for the same games. I really didn’t expect it to be so bad. Still a great little machine, but the battery is definitely a major negative.
I thinking of getting a switch but if it doesn’t have good battery I’m going to have to re-consider
Have you tried google? Not to be a jerk, but this is easily searchable.
Sorry to bother you, but which one would be better for portability for travel? Is the lite or the console one better for travel and battery life?
If you are primarily using the switch while travelling I would recommend the lite version since its smaller and so easily stored.
Thank you! For some reason it didn’t cross my mind to google it and you reminded me. I now know

It's still 200 bucks . If it has a longer battery life I d consider it.......And it only transports matter.
Both. Own every color
Someone with that username shouldn't have to ask.
Ironic, isnt it?
In all honesty, I couldn't think up a good username for Reddit and just wrote thatvin instead.
Switch Lite seems like it's best as a secondary. Either as a second Switch or a second console in general. Personally, I don't think having my only console be a handheld to be practical. Not to mention tabletop isn't even possible with the Lite, which ends up making it a glorified DS
Hi guys,
So i recently joined the switch lite family after treating myself to a switch lite for my birthday. I own a Switch already but Ive been traveling around a lot and my family likes to use my switch when I’m away. I decided to go with a used one but I’m just a little worried about the battery life, and if this system’s battery has been degraded. I have 14 days to return it if I notice any defects, and there’s a relatively small but deep scratch in the screen that bugs me any time i notice it, but I can look past that
It might, but I wanted to ask here to see if it’s normal. I feel like the battery has been draining fast, faster than my regular switch but I chalked it up to having a smaller battery. When I was playing Animal Crossing on it, I started using it with exactly 50 percent battery and on medium-slightly lower than medium brightness, and over the course of 50 minutes or so, the battery dropped down to 27% . Is this normal?
I also left it to download stuff for maybe an hour or an hour and a half and it went from around 60 percent to 20 percent
It depends on what game you are playing, I get about 3 hours on more demanding games and 5 on smaller games.
What games you getting 5hrs on?
Minecraft, Star Wars Jedi Knight Games, close to 5 hours on super smash bros, Undertale, fallout shelter.
It sounds about right. I normally get 3hrs - 3hrs 30 mins max from 100% to 20% battery life. It’s game dependent but I’d say most games will give you 3hrs on that 100-20% battery ratio. This is the only thing that lets the lite down is battery
this is something I've been wondering because I'm the type of person who likes to take care of my devices and i get paranoid really easily when something seems off. A lot of reviews on the switch lite say TOTK lasts about 4 hours on a full charge. however, mine only lasts around 2 hours and 30 something minutes before completely running out. Is this normal? Or is it because I have an older lite model or something? I got mine in 2020.
The switch lite has a smaller battery compared to the other models.
Could be the battery depending on how many charge cycles you've done. Sadly the Switch doesn't show that or battery health. Screen brightness also plays a huge factor though, but I'm not sure at what percent it becomes a huge battery hog. Anything above 50% would chew away at time though for sure.
I've used it nearly everyday since, charging it only when it's below 30%. I heard somewhere older lite models use the same battery as the v1 though, which could explain this but idk. I don't play with the brightness over 50% most of the time.
I heard somewhere older lite models use the same battery as the v1 though
This is not true.
All Lites use a 3700mah battery and all full-size versions including the V1 use a 4300mah battery.
The reason the newer versions have better battery life is because they had a die shrink and consume less power, not because of battery size.
Every Lite was made after this revision so all Lites have the same power consumption and battery size. It was actually the revision to decrease battery consumption that improved cooling enough to make the Lite possible in the first place.
I'd probably go ahead and replace the battery then. It's not that expensive or hard. You should be able to find the battery on Amazon or ifixit. Nintendo might even sell the factory ones if you call, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
2 hours 30 for a demanding game is pretty good tbh, but as others have suggested flight mode can help a lot.
How old is your switch?
About 3 years old.
2.5 hours sounds fair for a 3yo console and a large 3d game, especially when Nintendo says 3 hours is the min for a new Lite.
Is your brightness set very high?
-- Consumes more battery.
WiFi and Bluetooth enabled?
-- Consumes more battery.
Lower the brightness, enable Flight Mode.
It should give you an extra hour. Maybe.
Actually I did a separate test with everything you said above, and I got about 3 hours and 5 minutes.
Testing it with botw I get about 4 hours before the battery completely runs dry, which is why I'm kinda doubtful it's a battery issue.
The switch lite has a smaller battery compared to the other models.
So i wanted to get a new Nintendo switch, obviously the coolest part of the switch technology is it going from a handheld, to a full TV compatible console, but I found myself just loving the hand held aspect sooo so so so so so much, so I was looking at the switch oled, because I thought it may handle games and a micro-sd better, and also better batterylife? But now I just found out you can put a micro-sd into the switch lite!, the switch lite aesthetic, and convenience, and price and size is definitely what's so appealing to me, but I've never owned one so I have no idea, if they run well, have a good battery and if they last long, so any advice?? I can not decide, can the switch lite run games okay? Need input!
The Switch 2 is about to come out. Just wait for that. But I’ve had my Switch for about 5 years. Never even replaced the joycon that my dog chewed as a puppy b/c it still works perfectly and never got stick drift. I’d say as long as you take care of your stuff the lifespan is nothing to worry about.
The joycons thing is kind of just luck.
I've had 4 serviced at this point.
I DIY'd one and had Nintendo do the other 3.
Some of them are original to the consoles and still work fine. Others had drift that made them unusable in under a year.
Total luck of the draw.
Yeah that’s true. Another reason to just wait for the Switch 2. And for OP I’d also recommend against getting a switch lite before a regular switch b/c if you get stick drift on that it’s a lot harder to fix. But since it’s up to chance like he said it shouldn’t be a determining factor. Just don’t be rough on it and hope for the best. Lol
Since launch. Everything works perfectly. Joycons are just luck though,
I bet the bullet and bought an OLED new cause it had a bit of a discount. I don't plan on buying a switch 2 at launch either way so I'm totally fine with my choice. OLED if you want a better screen or switch lite if you dont mind the screen and never wanna dock. It's really up to your preference. Going on Facebook marketplace is normally the best price option and you get normally find it bundled with a bunch of games. Also lets you resell it on marketplace if you really want a Switch 2 later. Nintendo products tend to hold their value decently. IMO I would go with a OLED switch just for the capability of playing multiplayer games on tv (the switch has some really good couch co ops)
The OLED's internal components are identical to the OG Switch and Switch Lite, the screen is the only difference. It's not a "Switch Pro".
OLED has a bigger battery and larger internal storage.
It doesn’t “handle games better” as OP suggested though
I’d get the OLED now. Let the new console hype die down, new catalog build and hopefully we get a S2 OLED in a few years. You have a great backlog of games to choose from and games are simply beautiful on the OLED screen imo.
If you take care of your devices the switch can last years. There is a switch 2 announcement later this week if you’re willing to wait and see what they say about it. If you only wanna do handheld and wanna save some money though the switch lite is amazing
