TL;DR
Controllers
The Pro Controller is frequently recommended as an essential accessory for the Nintendo Switch. It provides a comfortable gaming experience, especially for action games or extended play sessions [1:4]
[3:1]. For those interested in retro or platformer games, the SN30 Pro from 8bitdo is also suggested due to its compact size and affordability
[1:1]
[2:1].
Screen Protectors and Cases
A screen protector is considered a must-have to prevent scratches on the Switch's screen, which is known to be easily scratched [3:4]
[3:11]. Glass screen protectors are often recommended for their durability
[3:8]. Carrying cases are also important for protecting your device when traveling
[3:1]
[5:6]. WaterField cases are highlighted for their quality
[4:2].
Grips
For handheld mode, grips like the Satisfye grip or Skull & Co. grip enhance ergonomics and comfort, making long gaming sessions more enjoyable [1:2]
[5:4]. These grips often come with customizable hand grips and carrying cases
[5:2].
Bluetooth Adapters
Bluetooth adapters such as the Homespot or Genki allow you to use wireless headphones with your Switch, providing convenience and portability [2:3]
[4:1]. The Gulikit adapter is noted for being smaller and potentially safer
[4:6].
Additional Accessories
Other useful accessories include micro SD cards for expanded storage, with recommendations for the Samsung EVO 256 GB [2:4], and extra charger cords for convenience
[5:6]. Flip grips are mentioned for playing games in vertical mode, adding versatility to your gaming experience
[5:7].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
While these discussions provide great insights, consider checking out bundle deals that might offer multiple accessories at a discounted rate. Additionally, always verify compatibility with your specific model of Switch, especially if you have the OLED version, as some accessories may differ slightly in fit or function.
I just got a switch for christmas and what are the best accessories for the price, i know i want a pro controller and screen protector but what’s the best in your opinion?
Not necessarily must have accessories, but a decent list of items to take a look at:
Satisfye grip
Pro Controller
JETech Screen Protector
GameCube Controller
GameCube Controller Adapter
MoKo Grips (Cheap way to get some decent hand relief)
Ethernet adapter (Try 5Ghz wifi network speed test first)
Pro charger (Can be daisy chained w/ JoyCon charger below)
Joycon Charger (Can be daisy chained w/ Pro charger above)
Nintendo Joy-Con Wheel (For Mario Kart, but not that great tbh)
Joy-Con AA Battery Pack (Mainly for a good grip in single joy con mode)
USB-C to USB adapter (May be good for certain USB devices you would like to use in portable mode)
[8Bitdo SN30] (https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-SN30-Retro-Set-Black-nintendo/dp/B075WRBK7Y) (Great for Retro games. If you want to use it with other games, I'd recommend the SN30 Pro as it has analog sticks/triggers for only $5 more)
8Bitdo Bluetooth Adapter (Can get PS4, Xbox, PS3, Wii Mote controllers working with this adapter on switch and on PC both. 1 controller per adapter. Rumble and motion supported.)
Carrying case, screen protectors, sd card are really all you need unless you really don’t like the joy cons
Pro Controller is a must
Screen protector and a case if you plan on using handheld mode, even if you think you not gonna drop it, better be safe than sorry!
And a portable charger
I recommend the Joy Con Grip and Charge over the default Joy Con Grip.
The pro controller is the best, but an SN30 Pro from 8bitdo is great for platformers and classic/retro games. The extra shoulder buttons and analog sticks aren't bad, and for $40-$50 it's a great substitute for the Pro controller.
As for screen protectors, I see plenty of switch cases and skins that include screen protectors. So if you're adding skins and getting a case, you're very likely to get a screen protector. I have mine from my Zelda case (blue and gray one) and it's still going strong after a year and a third. Highly recommend it.
What is the best screen protector/case for switch?
Thanks!
Aside from what I thibk are essentials (screen protector, case) a pro controller actually feels really nice so get one of you have some extra cash on you.
I mostly prefer playing handheld in bed but I also like using the TV sometimea. So I bought an extra charger so I don't have to keep switching out the charger from the dock.
Homespot Bluetooth adapter. It’s very small so it has a tiny footprint and works with almost any wireless headphones. Super easy to set up and use.
A 256 Samsung EVO micro SD card
Guilty pleasure: Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. Make sure to get the season pass.
Screen protector?
8bitdo joypads are great and much smaller/cheaper than Pro controllers for sticking in your bag. No adapter needed either as they pair directly with your Switch and show up as a pro controller.
Get a glass screen protector ASAP and the rest are optional. A case if you want to travel with your switch and pro controller if you are planning to play some action games.
Optional maybe but man, getting an anti-glare screen to go on that protector will change the way you're seeing things quite literally. I don't know why companies even make non matte screens.
I wouldn't say you need it, as long as you're careful with your switch. I've had mine for around a year and a half with no protector, and there's been no scratches, at least not on the screen.
Glass screen protector. Stop what you're going and get it now.
I came from a Vita which had a very scratch resistant screen. I've been told the switch screen was optimized not to break or shatter but is quite easily scratched. I never care about screen protectors even for my phones but I did get one for my switch
It’s just super flimsy plastic. JerryRigsEverything did an excellent durability test: https://youtu.be/XJP6gERPmMk
TL;DW keys scratch screen but otherwise it’s very drop-friendly. Kids will have a hard time breaking it.
Glass screen protector isn't necessary, so long as one is careful the flimsy plastic ones work wonderfully.
Pro-Controller
Screen Protector
Carry case for traveling
The Pokemon ball attachment comes with a code for Mew.
If you plan on playing Smash at all, whatever controller you're most comfortable with, but most Smash players will evangilise the GameCube controller.
Games in order I recommend:
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Kart 8
Yoshi's Crafted World
Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker
Then any multiplatform game you're excited to be able to take on vacation with you, mine:
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I have a PC that can rock it at 1440p Ultra settings, but being able to take it on vacation is worth the graphical downgrade.
Dark Souls Remastered.
Cuphead. I actually only have this one on Switch.
This is a great list. All I’d add is the satisfye grip and case.
Which satisfye grip is best... I see they make two
I'm gonna echo the "tempered glass screen protector" comments... because it's that important.
satisfye gaming grip if you plan on playing portable alot.
I was just surprised with a Nintendo Switch and am so excited!! I want to know which accessories are your favorite, which websites are best to buy accessories from, and anything else a new Switch gamer should know. Thank you!!
My favorite accessories are made by this small independent business called Human Things. They make the “Genki” which is a Bluetooth adapter that allows you to connect your wireless headphones, and also comes with a brilliant portable stand and microphone for voice chat that plugs in to the aux port. It’s all packaged in a case that looks identical to other Switch games too!
They also make a product called the “Covert dock” which is the most portable dock / charger you’ll find. They did extensive research to ensure the dock matches all specifications and authored a paper explaining why other third party docks can be dangerous / brick your console. The one they make is high quality and you don’t need to worry about that risk. It also comes with global travel adapters.
Aside from those two accessories, WaterField (aka SF Bags) makes some brilliant Switch cases made from premium materials - stylish and mature designs made from high quality materials that will last far longer than the console itself!
My advice is to do your research on all accessories and that you get what you pay for. Don’t solely look for the cheapest accessories you can find, as that could lead to damage of different sorts or just a simple waste of money.
I’ve bought two WaterField cases for the Switch (gave one to a friend and kept the other) and one for the Vita. They are the best cases I’ve ever used. I’ll never buy another brand’s case as long as WaterField keeps making them.
The gulikit is an objectively better Bluetooth headphone adapter for the switch, and it is much smaller. And there are multiple cases showing that the covert dock is not safe
Just to add to your first point:
If anyone has the PS4 Gold wireless headset, those work automatically with Switch. Just plug the USB dongle in and you're set.
Emphatically this. It's expensive, but once you have one you never want to play any other way. I even prefer handheld mode with the pro controller.
The cheaper solution is the 8bitdo sn30 pro+. It's a great controller and quite frankly the d-pad is way better. But it's missing the quality of life features like waking up the switch, HD rumble( it has regular rumble), amiibo. But you can also play on pc, it has analog triggers and really customizable software. So it really depends on what you're using it for.
Skull & co. grip. A "must" for handhelders.
I just got mine yesterday and will never go back to joycons. The sticks are so sweet. Way more comfortable in my hands to.
Yeah, that's one thing that kinda sucks about it, although I consider it a net positive since it's still a lot better than the flimsy one on the Switch.
The analog stick pads they include are also a minor tradeoff, where I like the extra grip given to me on the sticks, but the left one makes it harder to press the - button (thankfully this isn't used often in much).
Handheld would be impossible for me, due to the size of my hands, if it weren't for them. Just wish they had thought of a scratchless model earlier.
It's a very nice controller, I just wish it (well, mine at least) didn't suffer from the dodgy d-pad and false joystick inputs :-(
What’s wrong the the d pad? I use it mainly to play new super Mario bros. The joystick does flick back in the opposite direction (inputs) sometimes, especially when playing smash
I'm kinda new to having a switch I only have 5 games a controller a case and I have it since Christmas 2021 so I'm wondering what are good things to have on hand or when out
I would highly recommend the Skull and Co. grip if you play in handheld mode. It has customizable hand grips, and it comes with a carrying case that fits the Switch with the grip case on.
Screen protector (get this early), pro controller (for playing docked and for competitive games), a satisfye grip with corresponding carrying case (especially if you’re getting older), and an extra charger cord (so you can leave one plugged into your dock and take the other with you when you’re out and about).
Do you know what chargers I should get I was kinda worried to use anything bar official and iv been looking for a OLED screen protector I can't find one
Depends which country you live in, but there are lots of screen protectors for the OLED on Ebay and Amazon (search Switch OLED screen protector— my favorite is the amFilm one), and I always use the official charger too. Just Google “Nintendo Switch charger”.
The Satisfye grip, easily the best thing I’ve purchased for the switch, especially if you play mostly handheld
Satisfye grip is the shit. So good. The switch went from 1/10 in term of ergonomy to 20/10 with the grip
The Pro Controller is excellent for playing docked. Genki makes neat dock built into a power brick. I wouldn’t say anything outside of what you have is necessary.
Flip grip to play some shmups and other games on vertical mode
Yes. Check out “does it flip?” Page for flip grip. They keep track of titles that use it
My favorite accessory is my pro controller, followed by my Skull grip. I also really like having a spare Nintendo charger so that I can plug it in while playing handheld if needed.
What chargers do you recommend other than the official one
Unfortunately, official one is the way to go. You are sure it's powerful enough to charge the console while not playing but also while playing at the same time.
Also it has "great build quality". I have two official chargers that I moved a looooot with me and they're still near mint
Lost me at starter kit. the only thing good out of it is the case.
Thanks for saving me a click.
it's like the most basic accessory's you can get that are not worth it.
Here, I'll make you a better list:
I purchased a starter kit. For $15 I got a case, some decent earbuds, two screen protectors and a cleaning cloth. While the screen protectors are cheap, you are still getting an incredible deal. You could easily spend $15 and only get a case. If you are buying the console new you are spending quite a bit of money as it is. Factor into this $15-$60 for games and you could quite easily overshoot any budget. A starter kit helps save a few dollars on less-than-essential items.
I like how 6 of the ‘items’ on the list are from the same item
As someone who owns / ordered the starter kit I can say for 100% that the joycon guards kinda wear down the joycons’ little clips that keeps them docked to the console which is REALLY BAD, I had to buy 2 extra pairs because of this.
2nd thing to note is that the earplugs sound quality is sub-par to 1998 Nokia cellphone speakers.
Aside from that, everything else included in the starter kit is great for new switch owners.
None. Thats why they are accesories; accesories arent must have.
This is a terrible list. Don’t waste your time watching.

I've got an OLED coming at the end of the month. I've never played with a Switch before, do I need anything that doesn't come in the box to play it on my TV? What else would you recommend looking into?
Skull & Co grips
Screen protector
8bitdo adapter if you already have a ps4\ps5 controller
Biggest possible micro SD card you can afford
Mod chip. Screen protector. Bigger SD card carry case.
Pro controller for sure. Also, get better joy-con replacements with bigger buttons and joysticks.
To play on TV ..... Pro controller. And a large micro SD. 512GB recommend.
Welcome to the family
The number one thing you need is a good carrying case.
The switch OLED comes with a plastic screen protector applied so unless you regularly smash your screens, you probably won’t need a screen protector.
A stylus can s good if you plan to play games like Mario maker.
And finally a pro controller is good for playing on the tv but the joycons are perfectly usable and I my opinion they are not as uncomfortable as everyone says.
My girlfriend just got a switch, I want to get her something for it, but a set of joy cons or pro controller are boring. I want to get her something a bit more interesting
I got the skull and co case and that's been absolutely amazing for handheld mode. I also got the pro controller after using a cheap knock off for a but and wow it's so amazing!!
Pokéball plus, GameCube Controller and adapter, HORI DPad Controller, Splatoon 2 soft case
Wait, they brought back the hori dpad?
It’s basically a joycon without rumble, without motion, without wireless, and it’s handheld only but has an awesome DPad instead of the four buttons. Perfect for indies, and 2Dgames.
Didnt the hori controller cause a bunch of overheating and other issues?
No, they fixed the battery drain issue long ago. Works perfectly.
I have the handheld switch grip comfort for the whole system. Not those cheap gel ones. One that feels more like an actual controller. Great for handheld and my hand doesn't cramp up anymore. (Fu old age)
do you have a link to the specific one you got?
If you have Pokémon Let’s Go and play Pokémon Go on your phone the pokéball plus is really cool
Hands down the best money I ever spent on my Switch was the Pro Controller. Boring or not, it's the single best investment I can recommend for the Switch.
I had a cheap $25 knock off controller and it was fine but it just felt clunky and stiff. Got a pro controller on Black Friday and wow it's a world of a difference and I absolutely love it as a controller
I bought one just feels like a knockoff xbox one controller. Hand grips drop to much
I plan on getting a Switch w/ ssbu and MO along with a wired controller so my sister and I won't have to share joycons playing smash.
I don't intend on talking the game on the go so I don't plan on getting a travel case. Are there any other things I should consider in the price-tag?
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Adjustable-Charging-Stand/dp/B07D12JGBB
Its a small charging dock that doubles as a more reliable stand than the one attached to the switch. Small form factor makes it super convenient for traveling.
Screen protector. My partner and I both have had Switches for the better part of a year and the only other thing either of us has felt like we needed was a travel case, but you said that you won't be taking it on th go. If you're going to be getting games digitally, you'll want an SD card.
I got my husband a switch for christmas and here's my experience in the past 24 hours:
•the switch console itself - comes with two joycons to support play with one or two people. Bundles don't do much to help the price ad the game ends up being about the same price as if you bought it separately. Comes with the console, a pair of joycons, a dock, two wrist straps for the joycons, and a comfort grip that DOES NOT charge the joycons. ~$300
•extra joycons - these are nice to have but if you don't have a large group of friends I would say hold off. The only reason my husband got them is because we have a friend living with us at the moment and he brings his girlfriend over and we all like to hang out together. These are opinion based on if you need strting out or not. ~$70/set
•screen protector - this is an absolute must because the dock can scratch the plastic screen very easily. I reccomend a tempered glass one as they are very durable. ~$10/2-pack
•micro sd card - a 64gb sd card should hold you over for a long while but isn't immediately necassary if you are doing physical copies of games. Remember, it doesn't have to be nintendo brand. ~$12
•pro controller - not necassary starting out since the grip that comes with the console works fine for holding the joycons like a normal controller if it's docked and obviously you've got the joycons attached to the system if it isn't. ~$60
•accessories - i advise waiting on accessories like the amazon bundle you saw until you get a feel for the system itself and see what you would actually use with it and is necassary. Less wasted funds and space in your room. ~$30+
Obviously prices do not include tax there but the essentials come out to about $310 plus the price of however many games you want.
Pro Controller, Screen Protector and at minimum 128GB SD CD card ($20 on Amazon). Get the pro controller worth the price.
Is it worth it though? I mean, it's great, but I've never had any issue with the joy-cons and I'm rarely compelled to actually get my pro-controller out and use it. It usually gets used by player 2 actually, to be honest.
Could just be that I'm a filthy casual though, who doesn't feel the need to strive for maximum performance or anything like that.
Idk, I just feel like in my case the money could have been better used
I spent the first 6 months with the system using the joycons with the controller adapter. I bought a $20 wired controller on Amazon that was decent and used that for player 2 when they came over. I wasnt thrilled with that remote to be honest and the wire was just too annoying. I saw the pro controller for $50 a while back and said let me take the plunge. I legit haven't touched anything else since. It's such a comfortable feel. IMO it was worth it
Given the price difference and that I'm fine with a wire, I'd the pro controller really needed?
If you are fine with the wire than No. I have no regrets on splurging for the Pro
I’ve wondered this myself I don’t find the controller adapter for the joycon uncomfortable at all but using it in hand Hel is quite uncomfortable leading me to believe the controller grip for handheld to be very important as I’ve heard so much about Zelda being better in hand held
I got this and while not perfect it is way better than just Handheld alone. Still fits in my zipper case and don't worry about the kids handling it near as much. and only $17US
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B077V9B7C6/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_8WGnCb5DHZRQJ
It doesn't come with an SD card. It does have internal memory and if you're mostly going to be playing smallish indie games then you'll be able to have a decent number installed at a time. You can also just alternate which ones are actively installed on your Switch if you do hit your limit. You can always add an SD card at any time if you end up wanting to have several larger games on you Switch at time.
