TL;DR
Initial Setup
Setting up a Nintendo Switch involves connecting the dock to your TV using an HDMI cable and plugging in the power adapter [1:6]. Once the hardware is connected, insert the Joy-Con controllers into the console. Turn on the Switch and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the initial setup, including selecting your language, region, and connecting to Wi-Fi
[5:5].
Account Management
It's advisable to create a guest account for friends or family who might want to try games without affecting your save data [4:1]. This can be done through the user settings on the console. Additionally, if you plan to play online multiplayer games like Super Smash Bros., you'll need a Nintendo Online membership
[4:2].
Accessories
Consider purchasing essential accessories such as a screen protector and a case to protect your console [4:2]
[4:3]. If you plan on playing online, a LAN adapter can provide a more stable connection than Wi-Fi
[4:2]. For enhanced audio experience, consider setting up external speakers routed through an audio interface
[1:3].
Games and Recommendations
The Nintendo Switch offers a wide variety of games suitable for both single-player and multiplayer experiences. Popular titles include Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Pokémon games [5:2]
[4:4]. Exploring the Nintendo Switch Welcome Center can offer additional recommendations and tips for new users
[2:1]
[3:1].
Gaming Space Setup
Many users choose to set up their Switch in various configurations, from living rooms with large 4K TVs [1:2] to cozy gaming nooks with gooseneck device holders
[1:5]. Cable management is important for maintaining a tidy space, so consider organizing cables effectively
[1:7].
On your desk? The side of your TV stand? as part of your battlestation or cozy nook? Do you have other cool Nintendo gear to share?

Went out and splurged for a 4K Flatscreen along with the Switch 2, this bad boy right in my living room
Oh that’s a neat setup!
Do the speakers work for both the laptop and the Switch 2? How does that work?
sort of! the larger speakers are routed to my audio interface (silver thing left of switch) which goes to my laptop! the smaller speakers go to the left monitor (4k60) which has a headphone jack. PS5 and switch audio go through that
I’m setting it up, naked. Idk bout y’all.
Lmao
I use a gooseneck device holder, very convenient
You are so close to good cable management
Actually, only the black HDMI cable is "in the way" because it's new. The Ethernet cable will be removed anyway — it was only there for downloading faster.

Hey everyone :) I'll buy the console in a couple of weeks, really looking forward to it.
Got any tips for a newbie? I'll get "Super smash bros" and a controller, but what else should I get?
Screen protector and case.
Also if you plan to play smash online, you will need an online membership and a LAN adapter.
why LAN?
Screen protector, and a case.
Smash bros is great. If you're looking for multiplayer, consider Mario kart and Mario bros. If you're looking for single player then Mario odessey, breath of the wild, yoshi's crafted world, and a few others are great games. (A few are 1 or 2 players)
Make a Guest account for the inevitable moment someone goes to try a game and you don't want to mess up your save game.
I technically had a switch for like a month about like two years ago, but didn’t end up playing it because I was a heavy PC gamer and gave it to my nephews so besides Mario kart eight I really haven’t played any switch games so I’m very excited to start playing the Zelda games and some Pokémon. Any tips on what I should do when I’m done download the update Are there any settings that I should know about?
Should I get it?
If you like Nintendo games and want something that will have fun Nintendo games for its life cycle, then yes. If you like portable gaming the yes. Pokemon although scarlet and violet lack in certain areas, are still pretty fun. Pokemon legends arceus is extremely fun. Metroid dread is a superb metroidvania. All the legend of Zelda games on switch are amazing.
Unless you meant the switch 2 as in upgrading from switch 1. Then yes lol. Any game that has dynamic resolution on switch 1 will run at its highest resolution. Any game with unlocked frame rate will run at 60fps. And any game locked to 30 that struggled to hit that 30 will now have no issues.
I’m enjoying my switch 2. It’s just a super switch. It is the same just better and I’m completely ok with that fact.
Thanks! I’m upgrading from the Nintendo Switch Lite lol
It’s great! I mean I’ve only played Mario kart but the colors pop and the game is smooth!
The screen looks so good for a LCD screen!
Yes
I also skipped the original switch and am looking forward to enjoying some of the games I missed out on. The backwards compatibility sold me.
Welcome!! I just pre ordered Donkey Kong!
I actually think Nintendo is finally putting effort into their games. Like MK world isn’t perfect but I can tell they put some effort into it. Speaking of effort DK bananza looks like one of the best nintendo games we will ever receive. It’s just perfect. Can’t describe it any other way.
Congrats bro enjoy I love mine too 🖤🤍
Where did you get that button covers?
The switch 2 is also my first switch and the Mario games are so fun to relax to.
Looks nice
Received my Switch 2 on launch day. This weekend, I decided to arrange my gaming room to accommodate the new edition. I didn’t know how I felt about this system till now. This system is great. I hadn’t really messed with it till I had it all set up, and I’m loving it. How are your experiences and thoughts about what Nintendo has done?
How did you hide wires
All the connections are in a cubby behind the Tv. Drilled holes and fish wire through.
Are you using color changing LED’s behind the tv that follow the esthetics of whatever color is on the display?
I think it is Philips Ambilight. I have it too, amazing thing.
Yes sir
Yea, cuz it’s way too high! TV’s should be centered at eye level in the most common seating position!
His tv is way too high
Way too high. Neck pain inbound.
This looks like ceiling too low maybe this is a basement /mancave
r/floortoolow
It kinda is….
This will be my first Switch and first hand held gaming system since the Gameboy Advance. What accessories should I skip and what are must haves? Other info that might help paint the picture: this will be my only game system, I’m picking it up at GameStop, and I don’t see myself “docking” it too often.
In order of necessity: a case to transport it, a screen protector and a pro controller
I'd put screen protector first, because you're just as likely to drop or scratch it at home before you ever put it in a case to travel with.
Case is #1 for me, my switch didn't have a screen protector for most of its life but was carried in a case since day 1. That said, I have a case and screen protector waiting for my switch 2, and my switch was used when I got it.
Curious - why is the screen protector so valuable? Does it affect the clarity of the visuals in your experience or if you'd expect as much?
It's not important and the Switch never was scratched by the dock unless you jammed it in at an angle like a monkey.
It protects the screen. The Switch dock scratched the screen, I'm sure the Switch 2 dock will too
I don't think a pro controller will be required if playing in handheld mode
This is the correct answer, plus a MicroSD Express card if you plan on being entirely or primarily digital.
nailed it. this is all you need imo.
If you won't be docking it much, then you will want a carrying case for sure, you don't want to be leaving it sitting in the open to get smashed by objects.
Carrying case and a glass screen protector
Switch 2 Pro Controller for playing on TV
Nintendo Switch 2 All in One Carrying Case - to store your Switch 2, Switch 2 dock, Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joycons. I want to buy this so I don't get dust and will pack away after every playing session, doesn't take long to setup your dock and Switch 2.
My computer has a hdmi cable port, but after plugging it in looking back at my computer, nothing is happening.
I even made sure my Switch console was put in the dock property. Whats going on??
Most HDMI ports on computers are HDMI out, which means that the port will only send out an output, not accept it.
Sad noises
If you are trying to hook it up so it appears on your monitor but your monitor has only 1 hdmi input you can buy a 2-1 splitter or a switch box like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079L8VZ5R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hU3sDbYBHTT2R which allows you to swap your inputs to a single screen. I use something along to the later to run my Xbox and SNES to my monitor alongside my computer.
For those of you who come to this subreddit and look around for a guide to buying a Nintendo Switch, I hope this thread helps you. So without further ado, let's talk about you buying your next video game console, the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite:
As of right now, there are two different options you can purchase when it comes to the Nintendo Switch. You have the option to buy the Nintendo Switch in two different SKUs: the hybrid system which allows you to play on the go or as a home console, or you can buy the Switch Lite, which is the handheld version only. If you are struggling to figure out what version you want to buy, my advice is that if you even think you are going to play on a tv, just save the extra $100 and get the hybrid Switch.
Accessories for the Nintendo Switch:
There are multiple accessories for the Nintendo Switch, however, I believe there are five main accessories you should look to get as soon as possible after purchasing your Switch.
And now that we have the accessories out of the way, here is a list of 10 games that you should probably look into (obviously not buying them all at once).
If those games don't really peak your interest, here are some other games I'd recommend from my personal collection:
Hopefully this guide helps someone out!! There's definitely a lot of other games that could be added to the list of "must check out games," so don't take my word for just the games listed!
I see you've made no mention of the two versions of the hybrid Switch, which might be important for someone buying a pre-owned model ... the original release (model HAC-001), and the hardware revision with a more efficient chip-set and thus better battery life (model (HAC-001(-01)).
Jodi split pad is a great suggestion, if you like playing in handheld mode. So much comfier and makes playing 3d games like doom or Skyrim really enjoyable.
Recently bought a switch and thought this was a great read, nicely done!
