How to Connect Nintendo Switch to TV

TL;DR

  1. Ensure all cables are securely connected: USB-C power adapter, HDMI cable from dock to TV.
  2. Set the TV input to the correct HDMI port.
  3. Adjust TV settings, particularly resolution and RGB range.
  4. Try different HDMI cables or ports if issues persist.

Cable Connection Order

The order in which you connect your cables can be important for establishing a proper connection. The recommended sequence is to first plug in the USB-C power adapter to the dock, then connect the HDMI cable to the dock, followed by connecting the HDMI cable to the TV, and finally placing the Switch into the dock [1]. This method helps ensure that all components are correctly powered and recognized by the TV.

TV Settings Adjustments

Several users have found success by adjusting their TV settings. For Samsung TVs, turning off 'Game Mode' or changing the RGB Range to 'Limited' has resolved display issues [2:1][2:4]. Additionally, setting the TV resolution to 720p in the Switch's TV settings has been effective for some [4:2][5:3].

Troubleshooting HDMI Issues

If the Switch does not display on the TV, try using a different HDMI cable or port [1:10][2:5]. Testing the setup with another TV can help determine whether the issue lies with the TV or the Switch itself [1:2][3:2]. Some users have also suggested cleaning the connectors on both the dock and the Switch to ensure a good connection [3:3].

Dock and Power Adapter Considerations

Ensure that the dock is receiving power, as a lack of power can prevent the Switch from displaying on the TV [4:3]. If possible, try using a different power adapter to rule out any power-related issues. Additionally, updating the dock's firmware might be necessary, although this requires the Switch to be docked [3:4].

Compatibility Issues

Some TVs may have compatibility issues with the Switch, particularly older models or those with unique firmware settings [5:3]. In such cases, forcing the Switch to output at a lower resolution or using specific HDMI ports labeled for gaming may help [2:2]. If problems persist, consulting the TV manufacturer's support or considering an HDMI splitter might be beneficial [5:1].

ORIGINAL POST

Hi. My switch has worked perfectly fine with my living room tv until today. When I plugged the cord into the HDMI port, and Switch into the Switch dock, etc, it won’t show up on the tv. I saw a post similar regarding this and people had answered that I need to do it in a specific order— plug in USB-C power adapter, then plug in HDMI to Dock, then plug in HDMI to TV, then put Switch in the dock. I did all of that in that order, but it still doesn’t work. It clearly detects the Nintendo Switch, since it says “No Signal - NintendoSwitch”, but it still won’t display the screens. How do I fix this?

You could always try another HDMI cable.

Or better, try another TV with the original cable.

I did try another HDMI cable, but that didn’t work either. I know I could probably use another tv but this tv is the largest we have so it’s the one I use the most 😅

Maybe try the other TV just to help diagnose the problem. If it still doesn't work w that TV we can start troubleshooting the Switch itself

I take it you have little experience troubleshooting.

Trying it on another tv with the same and different hdmi cable potentially removes the tv as the problem.

What is with the auto moderator spam today? shits broken.

Have you tried rebooting the tv? I find that the computer for the assisted hdmi hub on the TV just stops responding to signals, like a lock up.

But the HDMI is working for everything else. I have a firestick as well as a PS5 plugged in, and those work just fine. Not sure what’s wrong with the Switch

This recently happened with my PS4, I had to boot it in safe mode and get it to automatically detect the resolution or something. Maybe check your tv settings, perhaps it switched resolutions or whatever.

I've had a similar situation a couple times. The order the cables are plugged into the dock is actually important, but I can't recall what the correct order is.

Can’t connect to TV!

Posted by PaleVanilla5588 · in r/NintendoSwitch · 2 years ago

I accidentially deleted my old post because I wanted to add a video showing my problem, but the community wouldn’t let me, so here it is again:

I bought a nintendo switch for my boy but i am having great difficulty connecting it to my tv. We have a Samsung The Frame and it can find the device when I connect it via HDMI, but after that I just get a black screen where it says "Game mode is on" but nothing else. I have tried with another HDMI cable that I know works, but without success. Can anyone help, or is the dock broken? It charges when I put it in the dock.

Then I would recommend starting the game and then throwing switch into the dock. I sometimes have troubles starting switch when it's already in dock. That's my best bet, if not, try another TV. Then you will know if issue is with TV or Dock.

Samsung televisions have been know to cause display issues on the Switch. Go to system settings, TV Settings, and change the RGB Range to Limited. Hopefully, that’s the reason it won’t display correctly: https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22331/~/how-to-adjust-the-tv-settings

Try turning game mode off in the tv settings. Nintendo is very fickle with what it works well with. Also, my switch wouldn’t work unless it was the Nintendo HDMI. Just throwing out some ideas, good luck!

EDIT: Nevermind, I reread your post and see that you already tried different TVs as well. I would guess the issue then is the port on the switch itself.

Try a different device in the same HDMI port on the TV. The port or TV itself could be the issue, especially since you tried multiple different cables and docks. If that doesn't work, then I would guess there is some kind of issue with the port on the switch itself and its connection to the dock

Hello my son has a original Nintendo switch. I’m having troubles getting it hooked up to the tv. I’ve tried different HDMI cords and different TVs and even a different dock. I’m assuming something may be wrong with the switch itself. Wondering if anyone has any ideas or potential solutions. I’ve looked online a bit and it seems to be a common problem with no real definite solution. Yes I’ve tried shutting it down, plugging in the cords to Nintendos suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Switch recently became only console that doesn’t connect to a specific TV

Posted by aoster_8 · in r/NintendoSwitchHelp · 4 months ago

Hi everyone! I have been having an issue with my switch and no support on websites has helped, so I wanted to reach out to see if anyone else has had this issue.

My switch functions completely fine most of the time except when connecting it to the living room TV. When I try to connect it to this TV, the screen is blank (most times), there’s no signal, or it says there’s an invalid format. This is strange because I’ve connected it to this TV several times before and had it work correctly. It’s even more weird because we’re able to connect the Xbox to the TV with the same cables without issue. Additionally, I tried setting my switch up on my room tv, and it worked perfectly.

I’ve tried turning it on and off, using different cables, using different ports, and looking at the switch settings but nothing seems to be working. Any help or suggestions would be so appreciated.

Steam Deck has had this issue with several certain TVs, dock not outputting to them at any resolution/setting or even after rotating the USBC cable the other way (as there’s some funny business with valve that the specifications of either their dock or cable aren’t equal depending how the USBC connector is oriented) 😂

I’m actually surprised at the Switch and its dock’s compatibility on account of it being a first of its kind USBC-based dockable tablet game console

When i’m using the Dock it charges and when it’s ready to show the switch on the Tv screen it shows the green light at the bottom of the dock. So it’s not the dock. Also it’s not my Tv because i tried my Switch on my monitor and it still didn’t connect

Hi! Thank you for your submission to /r/NintendoHelp! Please note that we are a fan community and not officially endorsed by Nintendo.

While you're waiting for an answer, here are some tips to help you along the way:

First, did you try Googling your question? A lot of questions about Nintendo can be answered quickly by just typing them into your search bar.

If you are asking a question about an older Nintendo system, try searching the subreddit most relevant to that system's hardware. It's likely someone has already asked a similar question before.

If your question is about Wii U, New 3DS or Switch hardware, you'll likely get a better answer if you contact Nintendo directly, rather than posting here.

#Nintendo's contact information is as follows:

  • North America - 1-800-255-3700
  • Europe - +44 (0)345 60 50 247
  • Australia - +61 3 9730 9900
  • Japan - +81-75-662-9600

Please note that contacting Nintendo by phone is the best way to get support. If you send an email or use the web chat you are not likely to get the support you need.

Good luck with your support endeavors!

Switch won’t connect to TV

Posted by RedditBoiWithNoLife · in r/Switch · 5 months ago

I have had my Switch for almost seven years now, I got it when I was 10. I stopped using it after a year or two because it suddenly stopped connecting to the TV. I remember putting it into the dock one day and the TV just didn’t recognize it as an HDMI input, and after trying all the fixes 12 year old me could think of, I just gave up and forgot about it.

Now I wanna connect it to the TV again and I’m getting the same result. The little green light next to the TV logo on the dock turns on but the TV doesn’t recognize the input. I don’t know what the problem is. It’s something to do with the Switch, because the Playstation 4 connects fine with the same HDMI cable. Maybe the Switch doesn’t like the non- Nintendo HDMI cable?

What should I do?

Thamior77 · 5 months ago

I've had issues with non-official ones in the past. You can always try a different one before buying an official one.

I'd also double check that the Switch is fully in the dock even though the light is on. Turn on the Switch while in handheld and then dock it. You should feel it go into the USB and the screen will turn off when it connects to the dock. If your Switch is loose inside the dock, the connection won't be very secure and it'll go in and out, a screen protector can help with this if you don't already have one. If it's super loose, you've probably put a good bit of wear on the dock and/or the Switch's USB port.

Try a different device

Process of elimination

Suspected bad device in suspected bad port with suspected bad cable

Replace one item at a time

First bad device, bad port, new cable

Then bad device, diff port, bad cable

Then bad device, diff port, new cable

Then good device, bad port bad cable Then good device, bad port new cable

(You see where I’m going)

If all devices and all cables and all ports aren’t working you’ve got a problem with the tv. If it’s turning on and displaying signal correctly it’s probably the input/control board

  1. Does the Switch have power? If the battery is empty, it might need to charge for a little while before it will properly power on.

  2. If it's an older TV, have you selected the appropriate HDMI port as input?

  3. As others have asked, is the switch dock plugged in?

  4. Have you pressed the power button on the switch after putting it into the dock and checked to see if the green indicator light turns on?

Help. Switch not connecting to TV

Posted by Spyrophantom · in r/NintendoSwitch · 5 years ago

I brought my switch and the dock to a new place, when we tried to hook it up, it just says “no signal”

We tried flipping the HDMI cables, restarting both the console and the TV twice with no changes. The console itself works fine in handheld mode, heck I even played a bit on the flight over, and yes the dock is plugged into an outlet.

I’m at a loss here.

(Note: the HDMI cable is not the one bought with the system, unsure if that’s the issue though)

How to connect Nintendo Switch to TV

Here’s how to connect your Nintendo Switch to a TV:

  1. Gather Your Equipment:

    • Nintendo Switch console
    • Nintendo Switch dock
    • HDMI cable (included with the Switch)
    • TV with an available HDMI port
  2. Set Up the Dock:

    • Open the back cover of the Nintendo Switch dock.
    • Connect the included AC adapter to the top port labeled "AC ADAPTER."
    • Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the bottom port labeled "HDMI OUT" on the dock.
    • Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on your TV.
  3. Place the Switch in the Dock:

    • Ensure your Nintendo Switch is powered on.
    • Carefully slide the Switch into the dock, ensuring the screen is facing the front of the dock.
  4. Select the Right Input on Your TV:

    • Turn on your TV and use the remote to select the HDMI input where the Switch is connected. This may be labeled as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.
  5. Start Playing:

    • Once the input is selected, you should see the Nintendo Switch home screen on your TV. You can now use your controllers to navigate and play games.

Tips:

  • Make sure your Switch is charged or connected to power while docked.
  • If you encounter any issues, check all connections and ensure the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
  • For a better gaming experience, consider using a TV with low input lag and good refresh rates.
