How to Transfer Data to a New Nintendo Switch

TL;DR To transfer data to a new Nintendo Switch, use the built-in transfer feature for save data, or utilize Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) for cloud saves. Some games do not support cloud saves, so manual transfer may be necessary.

Using Built-In Transfer Features

Nintendo Switch allows you to transfer save data between consoles using the system settings. You need to log into the same account on both systems, navigate to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data, and follow the prompts to send and receive save data [2:1]. This method can transfer specific game data, although some games do not allow save data transfers at all [2:5].

Cloud Saves with Nintendo Switch Online

If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can back up most game saves to the cloud. To access this feature, go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud [2:2]. However, certain games like Pokémon Legends Arceus do not support cloud saves [4:6]. NSO holds onto your save data for six months after your subscription ends, allowing you to resubscribe within that period to regain access [5:1].

Manual Transfer for Unsupported Games

For games that do not support cloud saves, such as Pokémon titles, a manual transfer process is required. This involves using the "Transfer User and Save Data" option in the system settings [4:8]. It's important to ensure that no data is wiped from your profile during this process [5:2].

Account Linking and Multiple Devices

You can use the same account on multiple devices by creating a new profile on your new Switch and linking it with your existing account email [3:1]. Save data tied to each account will transfer when the account is moved to a new system [3:3]. If you plan to keep both consoles, the transfer process includes a prompt asking if you intend to keep the old Switch, which might affect how the data is handled [4:3].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

When planning a transfer, it's crucial to verify which games support cloud saves and prepare accordingly. Always check Nintendo's official guides and support pages for detailed instructions and updates on supported games and features.

ORIGINAL POST

I just transferred my data to a new switch. I had put all the save data on an sd card before beginning. I used nintendos website for guidance, and didn’t see anything about if data on an sd card would transfer. After the transfer I do not see any games on the new switch, and I cannot transfer games from the old switch. When trying to do this it says there is no save data for the user. I still have the SD card with the data in the old switch. I cannot put the sd card into the new switch without it deleting everything. Is there anything I can do about my old save data or is it all gone?

The save data are on the switch system, you can't put them on a SD card.

So yes, it is all gone, except if you still have access to your old switch and your data is still there. And then you can transfer the save data from one switch to another.

The only other possibility is the cloud saves if you have Nintendo Online.

You can transfer specific games you just need to have both systems set up first. Log into the same account on both systems, go to system settings, data management, transfer your save data, send save data to another console, then pick the game you want to send, then same settings but receive save data on the new switch. There are certain games which do not allow save data transfers at all. You also can back up save data to the cloud if you have Nintendo Switch Online

I thought nintendo didn't have cloud save? Isn't that why I read about so many on other nintendo subs complaining about losing their switch and all their data due to no cloud saves?

You have to have Nintendo Switch Online membership to use Cloud Save, System Settings -> Data Management -> Save Data Cloud

Transfer game data or user to new switch?

Posted by IndividualTap5277 · in r/Switch · 3 months ago

Grabbed a new OLED switch on sale at Costco and don’t want to lose my saved game data from the old one. My son and I shared the old switch so I don’t want to mess up his saved data either as he will continue using it. Would it be best to transfer my user to the new one? If so, would my user data still be available to play on the old console? Most all of our saved data is from physical games.

TIA

Save data is tied to each account. If you transfer your account to the new system, then save data associated with that account also gets transferred. If your son has a separate account, then his save data will remain on the old system.

He is a user on my account but I just set him up with a child account (he’s 7) under family account. I’m assuming then his data will transfer with my account?! Also, if I transfer my account am I not able to use the same account on multiple devices? Thanks for the info!

You can use the same account on different devices.

Just create a new profile on your new switch, then link it with the email you use with your account so it becomes the same account.

Then you can transfer the saves you want.

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/45047/~/how-to-transfer-your-save-data-to-a-nearby-nintendo-switch-system

If you have NSO, you can have the same saves on your account on both switch thanks to cloud saves... except for the games that don't support cloud saves.

--

By example, I have my account on two switch and NSO, and my save of BotW is on both but I only have my save of pokémon violet on one switch and if I want to use it on the other switch, I have to send it (it will be deleted from the other switch, so there is only one copy of this save at any time).

Is it actually possible to transfer save data to a new Switch?

Posted by burningzenithx · in r/PokemonLegendsArceus · 3 years ago

So I’m planning to get a Switch OLED this weekend and have started prepping my current Switch for transferring data and trading it in.

All the rest of my games are backed up to my Nintendo Switch Online account. I know Pokémon Legends Arceus does not support cloud saves, but is it possible to transfer the data manually?

I already beat the game and completed the Pokédex and had only some lesser outlying things to do, like get from rank 9 to 10, get the rest of the Uknowns, and dig up the rest of the tablets (or whatever they were called).

Is it possible to transfer save data or are claims that it is possible just people trolling the net?

Is it just better to temporarily subscribe to Pokémon Home, dump my Pokémon there, and move them back once my new Switch is set up?

UPDATE: So I got my OLED and completed my data transfer. My Pokémon Legends Arceus data as well as my Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee data transferred without issue. It’s still perplexing that cloud saves aren’t supported considering you can in fact transfer the save data through the transfer process. It’s because of this situation that I was paranoid and uncertain as to whether the save data would be transferable in the first place. Oh well, Nintendo is gonna Nintendo.

burningzenithx · OP · 3 years ago

The transfer process has a prompt asking if you plan to keep the old Switch or not. I’m assuming it does things slightly different depending on which is chosen. I’m trading in my old Switch once I’ve completed transferring and redownloading, so I don’t know how the process plays out for those who choose to keep both Switches.

Yes it's possible :) i used it for Arceus as well. I could explain how to do it, but a Google search for "nintendo switch transfer save data" should get you in the right direction.

So is it just the normal manual transfer process then for if people don’t have NSO and cloud saves?

I'm not entirely sure if it's the only way for Arceus but I used the manual way yes. If you meant an automatic way than I personally don't know of one and sorry for misunderstanding in that case.

Transferring Save Data from a switch

Posted by Ok-Struggle2867 · in r/NintendoSwitchHelp · 7 months ago

I have decided to give my switch to a relative so I can get the switch 2 whenever it comes out. How can I save my game data so when the new switch comes I can upload it and not lose game saves? I know if we have two switches together it’s easy to transfer data but how does it work if I won’t have the switch for some months?

It is possible to use NSO but I don't know how long the saves are kept if you don't keep NSO. AND some games like the pokémon games don't support cloud saves.

So the short answer is you can't for all. You have to make sure your relative or anyone else don't wipe your profile and its saves.

Nintendo Switch Online subsciption has cloud save backup for most games. Nintendo support has list of games that don't have NSO cloud save support/ https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/41267

After an NSO sub runs out, nintendo holds onto your save data for 6 months. Within that 6 months, you just need to resubscribe to gain access to the cloud save data.

How can I transfer my save data and games from an old Switch to my new Switch without overwriting the Mario Kart 8 that comes with it?

I recently got a new Nintendo Switch that comes with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I want to transfer all my old games and save data from my old Switch Lite to my new Switch but I’m afraid of accidentally deleting the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that comes with the new one. How do I go about this? Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas everyone!

Code is not attached to your console. It’s attached to your account. Use the download code with your account and you can use it on any console you’re logged into. Go into the store on your first Switch, deregister that Switch, sign into your account on your new switch. You’re done.

Pretty sure you can do games individually if you do the physical transfer, where you hold the switches near each other and transfer that way as opposed to the cloud.

If you have NSO, they save are store onto the cloud but you could transfer saves over from your switch

Is it possible to transfer stuff from a switch to a switch 2 and keep everything on the switch?

Posted by mattymattias0 · in r/NintendoSwitchHelp · 2 months ago

I've had my switch since 2018, and by transferring save data to the switch 2 i don't want to factory reset my switch just like that, all of a sudden. So I would like to know if there is a way to "copy" save data so that i can have it on both consoles. (Before you take this post down, the nintendo website doesn't say anything about this.)

Ok so apparently the transfer already copies data on its own, except for some games, that's good to know

It copies everything to the switch 2. Including all Pokemon, splatoon and animal crossing data.

A copy of all the data MINUS Pokemon, splatoon and animal crossing remains on the old switch.

Yes, that's how the local transfer works. Only the online option factory resets the switch afterwards.

Afraid_Word5820 · 2 months ago

Don’t take my word on this but I believe the system transfer automatically copies all data and keeps it on both with the exception of save data for certain games like Splatoon and Animal Crossing which are transferred to the new system and deleted from the original to prevent exploits.

This, games like Pokemon and a couple random ones said they could only have saves on one system but my OG switch still has 99% of what was originally on it.

I wasn’t sure because I have not touched my OG since the transfer

This may also depend on if you have NSO. Because it relies on cloud sync for the fact that your saves don't have only one home, with the exception of some of those specific games.

2 upvotes on reddit
Kongopop · 2 months ago

I did a full system transfer and it still leaves your old switch with all it's stuff on it except for those random games that don't cloud save like Pokemon and animal crossing. Only thing is all my games on my old switch don't have their virtual game card inserted so if you want to play digital games to boot them up you just have to do the virtual eject from the new switch and load it on the old one...I think

3 upvotes on reddit
IMPNick · 2 months ago

I transferred everything to my switch 2 and it didn’t factory reset the old one so I essentially had 2 copies of all the data. Another method is if you have a NSO subscription I believe it stores all your data online so you can grab it from there but I might be wrong.

From my recent experience, if you have Nintendo Online Subscription, its just simply a matter of redownloading back the save data from cloud. Log in your new Switch and everything should be there as soon as you sync up with the server.

However, if what you meant is game data or games downloaded from eShop, it is tied to the Switch. You need to format the micro SD card, and re-download the game from the new Switch. Just open your lobrary from eShop or through the main menu to view your list of purchased games.

Without knowing your situation, I can only suggest you do another data transfer, just like how you transferred your data from the old Switch ot the new one.

Yes, just do the same data transfer like you did when you got the second one.

Boot up the old Switch and do a transfer from there. But it will also wipe the new Switch.

How to transfer data to new Nintendo Switch

Transferring data to a new Nintendo Switch involves a few key steps:

  1. Prepare Both Consoles:

    • Ensure both your old and new Nintendo Switch consoles are updated to the latest system software.
    • Connect both consoles to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Use the Data Transfer Feature:

    • On the new Switch, select "System Settings" from the Home menu.
    • Scroll down to "Users" and select "Import User Data from Another Console."
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to link your Nintendo Account and transfer user data.
  3. Transfer Save Data:

    • If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can back up your save data from the old console to the cloud.
    • On the old Switch, go to "System Settings" > "Data Management" > "Save Data Cloud Backup" and back up your save data.
    • On the new Switch, go to the same menu and download the save data from the cloud.
  4. Transfer Game Data:

    • Download your games from the Nintendo eShop on the new console using the same Nintendo Account.
    • If you have physical cartridges, simply insert them into the new console.
  5. Check for Additional Content:

    • Make sure to check for any downloadable content (DLC) or additional purchases linked to your account and download them on the new console.

Important Notes:

  • The data transfer process will erase user data from the old console, so ensure you have everything backed up before proceeding.
  • If you have multiple users, you will need to repeat the transfer process for each user account.

Recommendation: If you have a lot of data or multiple users, consider using the cloud backup feature with Nintendo Switch Online for a smoother transition. This ensures that your save data is secure and easily accessible on your new console.
