TL;DR For a thrilling horror experience, consider classics like "The Thing" and "Psycho," modern hits like "Hereditary" and "Us," and unique gems such as "Oculus" and "Mother!" for psychological depth.

These recommendations span a wide range of horror sub-genres, ensuring there's something for every horror enthusiast's taste. Whether you prefer classic thrillers, modern psychological horror, or creature features, these films promise to deliver spine-chilling experiences.
I'm just looking for new horror movies to watch. If anybody knows some really good ones I would love to hear your recommendations. My personal favorite types are ones with the "scary creatures" and lots Of Gore.
You ever catch Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight? One of my all time favorites. Great monsters, good gore, great cast. Campy yet still kinda scary.
Never heard of it. Thank you for the recommendation, it sounds really good🙏🏼
No joke - if you watch it and like it, I can recommend heaps of old movies. I’m old, so I remember all the old good ones.
Wrong turn series. Pandorum Rec series
Sounds intriguing
I'd Recommend "Fallen" from 1996, go in completely blind. some others are Silverbullet, and Lost boys
Thank you🫶🏼
THE 1st VHS has the story of the bat demon girl and turned out they have a whole movie on her called Siren.
Thanks🙌🏼
1: As above so below. 2:Cobweb. 3:Us.Barbarian. 4: Us. 5:The ritual. 6:Talk to me. 7:Malignant. 8:Hereditary.
My favorites all in order.
I’ll check them out, thank you.
As most of you horror enthusiasts here, I've been watching, playing and reading horror since I can remember, but lately I've been feeling a little stuck in a rut. So, I've decided to make a little list of some classic, must-watch movies that I've been ignoring for the entirety of my life (don't judge me, I know y'all have those too). Although I've seen a fair share of horror movies, I've never completed franchises like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Child's Play and so on... (ofc I've seen the originals, but not much what comes after) so I would love some help with my list.
there's really no restrictions -I like everything, from 80's cheesy slashers to new age psychological horror, Sci-Fi, creature features, ghosts, literally anything from any decade, no limits!
Re-Animator (1985) The Beyond (1981) The Thing (1982) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1, 2 and honestly 3 The Wicker Man (1973) Hellraiser 1 and 2 (keep going if you like. I love them all, but there are a lot, and they do fall off) Oculus (2013) The House of the Devil (2009) Pyscho 1, 2 and 3 Mandy (2018) American Werewolf in London (1981)
Great list!! Love Hellraiser, but never got to watch them all so maybe it's time to try xD
Spookies, Nightbreed, Frankenhooker, Lord of Illusions, In the Mouth of Madness, Street Trash, Cemetery Man, Dead Alive, Ginger Snaps, Martyrs, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Scanners....so many lol
All of those are so good. I would put Frankenhooker, Dead Alive, and Ginger Snaps at the top of those.
Great recommendations! Seen Martyrs and Ginger Snaps, but the other ones I'll be watching soon :)
My Bloody Valentine (1981) is the most underrated slasher IMO.
I just finished it pretty good watch
The scariest clown e v e r... seen him in All Hallows Eve first -so glad they got him a spin-off movie tho... I heard somewhere they are gonna make a sequel right?
Castle Freak🎃(1995)
Sounds interesting, I'll check it out for sure, thank you!!
It’s great… and Jeffrey Comb is in it..and you’re welcome.👻
Yes and All Hallows Eve with Art. They have a 2 and 3 to Hallows Eve but I prefer the first versions.
Hi everyone, just looking for some must see Horror/Thriller movies. Off the top of my head some movies I enjoyed were :
Hereditary, Heretic, Parasite, Nosferatu (2025), The Northman, Wolfman (2010),
Open to all suggestions, these are just some big hitters I could think of right now.
The Relic (1997) is a good monster movie with a bizarre monster that kills people in a very specific and gruesome way. It didn't win any Oscars but it's a lot of fun
Hellraiser... the first one is great... the 5th one... well it has Adam Scott...
We’ll tear your soul apart.
"I've felt EVERYTHING ELSE... please... please DO IT!" (Not verbatim)
I second this... The Hellraiser series, at least the first two are as legendary as you can get. One of the few movies I'll watch 3X times.
How about: Rosemary's Baby (1968), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Psycho (1960) Total classics and definitely worth a watch!
Thankyou, it's shocking how many classics I've ignored. Will check these out.
The Witch. It’s slow and atmospheric but the dread just crawls under your skin, and by the end it feels like you’ve watched a nightmare unfold.
I've seen The Witch, for some reason it just didn't do much for me at all! Maybe because I feel like Eggers work has got progressively better with each film. Seeing his later work before I saw The Witch just made it so it didn't live up to the hype?
The Omen Dog Soldiers Ravenous Nefarious Sleep Tight I absolutely loved the Dark Crystal series for dark fantasy Pans labyrinth The 13th warrior
I've avoided horror movies my entire life, not for any particular reason, but now I am interested in them more than ever. What are some recommendations you guys have for the best / your favorite horror movies of all time?
Edit: I didn't expect this post to get as many comments as it did, thank you all for the suggestions! I am currently creating a watchlist based on your suggestions and my own research.
The Changeling. It was made in 1980 with George C Scott. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but it absolutely scared the heck out of me.
Joooooseph
Scared the daylights out of my sister.
Here's some classics every horror fan should watch, should be enough variety to get you started and help you figure out what type of horror you like.
Silence of the Lambs
Halloween
Scream
The Shining
28 Days Later
Night of the Living Dead
Jaws
The Thing
The Ring
The Thing, Poltergeist, Lake Placid, The Haunting (1963) and Prophecy (1979)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Videodrome (1983)
Carrie (1976)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
You forgot The Exorcist (1973)
Yeah, it's very good but it's not one of my favourites.
Awesome choices
Amityville Horror, The Blob, Hills Have Eyes.
I have a list of movies that have been recommended to me but I am just not sure where to start or which might be the best one. Can you guys help me? I'm in a bit of a downer the last few weeks and a good horror movie is something I can look forward to in the evening! These are what I have on my list:
Or, if there are similar ones to these you think I should/could add - please let me know :)
Oculus- it is a movie with plenty of dread and jump scares. A good watch.
the trailer was intriguing!
Mother!
I don’t know if it’s even a thing but I felt like that movie gave me social claustrophobia…
I haven't seen Mother but I'll rank the rest:
1, Oculus (#1 by far; it's a favorite of mine)
Enemy
Before I Wake
4 . It Comes at Night
Hellbender
Pyewacket
The Harbinger
I tried watching Oculus, but turned it off—couldn’t get into it for some reason. I’ve seen it praised a lot, so maybe I’ll give it another shot.
Pyewacket was lit, and I wasn’t expecting it to be.
I felt like half of Oculus was her reading old newspaper articles about people who were near the mirror that were killed. Literally reading word for word like 50 examples of the exact same thing it's like I get it Karen jeez.
Yeah pyewacket sounds awesome actually
Oh thanks for this. This is very helpful :)
I loved Mother! and Enemy. Try one of those.
Mother! does sound great! Enemy also because I love Jake Gyllenhaal
Love Oculus. Always a great watch
I've been looking for a good horror movie but all the ones a saw are just gore and I'm not really a big fan of gore, I'm looking for a movie which is scary but has a bit of thriller as well and a great story behind it to get me attached to the story and not just waiting for jump scares.
Identity! It’s old but amazing and has a twist ending.
Yes! GREAT mention!
The Wailing
Came here to say this.
The Mothman Prophecies.
Chapstick
The Visit
Devil
Trap
Atm
Barbarian
One time I was on an elevator with a bunch of people, you know how it is, everyone is awkwardly silent. So I just said "anybody see that movie where all those strangers were stuck on an elevator? And one of them was the devil?"
Got some awkward laughs out of the crowd
Case 39
I’ve been a bit bored lately and it’s been a while since I’ve watched a horror movie. I’ll scroll through my watchlist and won’t find anything that catches my eye. I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for good horror movies. some of my favorites are: saw II, evil dead (2013), the descent, night of the living dead, bride of frankenstein, aliens, hereditary, etc… I really love the vibe of early 2000s movies but I’ll watch any era. any suggestions would help, thanks!
1408 (2007).
The taking of Deborah Logan, Babadook
The Perfection (2018)...
And if you don't mind particularly intense (feel bad) kind of films... Incident in a Ghostland is a personal favorite, but it's really dark.
Barbarian
One Cut of the Dead !!!!
Shaun of the Dead, Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell, Zombi 2, Dead End, Inside, Triangle
also EVIL DEAD 2013 MENTION 🥶💯🔥🔥🔥
Im desperately in need for a good horror/thriller for a solo movie night tonight!! please give me your best recs!!
im not into gory stuff but i want a movie thatll leave me pretty freaked out!
Heredetary is really good...The invisible guest, mystic river.
Nothing has ever scared me like
Blair witch project
The strangers
Paranormal activity
But best thrilllers I’ve seen that weren’t scary:
Get out
Midsommar
Hereditary
Saw
Misery
The mist
Ps I’m always surprised to see anyone recommend longlegs. I watched it with two friends at the cinema and we all thought it was so stoopid
Jacob's Ladder
Train to Busan
Kill Boksoon
The Shining
Blair Witch Project
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Longlegs (2024)
Psycho (1960)
I’m interested in others’ recommendations! Always on the lookout for good scary movies.
thank you!! i cant wait to check these out 😆
Second "Longlegs"
The Thing, Halloween & Trick ‘r Treat
The thing been always on my mind for years to give a go and trick r treat never see many talk about them enough but always see them streaming sometimes
Trick ‘r Treat is the best Halloween movie there is imo. It’s more of a Halloween holiday movie than the film Halloween.
That said, absolutely watch it but to get in the spirit it’ll be way more fun if you watch in October when it’s Halloween season.
In comparison to the Halloween franchise, I feel those movies mostly only feature the holiday subtlety so you can enjoy those anytime.
Agree, the original The Thing
Alien
The Exorcist.
Hereditary
Hellraiser (1987)
Black Christmas (1974)
The Exorcist
The Thing (1982)
Possession (1981)
22 years on this planet and I’ve watched little to no horror movies. I’m deciding to not be a pansy anymore and dive into the genre head first. Any suggestions? Doesn’t have to be a popular or well-known film.
(There are a lot of great modern horror flicks as well, but these should be watched first)
Great list! I would add Rosemary's Baby as well, as far as the classics go.
This is an awesome list, with a ton of great movies!!
Jaws is probably the best PG rated Scary movie. We’re gonna need a bigger boat
imo, yes, but not before most of the other ones listed here. I would run out of most highly regarded horror movies before watching, unless you just fell in love with 1982 and want more. 1982 is an absolute movie classic.
It makes me so happy that this is the top comment. Greatest horror movie of all time.
Session 9
In the Mouth of Madness
Cabin in the Woods (this is part horror movie, part parody - watch other horror movie first so you can better appreciate the jokes about the tropes)
I've seen a LOT of horror movies and this one gave me nightmares. Definitely recommend watching but holy shit it's intense.
I absolutely love horror movies and still haven’t been able to watch this again since the theater
That’s a good list they made, and a really great idea if you’re dipping your toes in for the first time… The Shining is to this day still incredibly unnerving and immersive - beautifully shot and acted. Psycho is fantastic, and so is Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. That movie was a revelation for me because up to that point I did not think anything shot in black and white could even come close to being as scary as a modern day film, but Hitchcock knew what he was doing
I agree. I had no interest based on the synopsis and trailer, but was pleasantly surprised. I would put it in the top 20 horror flicks
So happy this is #1. My favorite horror movie
top horror movies to watch
Here are some top horror movies to consider:
"The Shining" (1980) - Directed by Stanley Kubrick, this classic psychological horror film is based on Stephen King's novel and features Jack Nicholson in a chilling performance.
"Get Out" (2017) - A modern horror masterpiece by Jordan Peele that combines social commentary with suspense, focusing on a young Black man who uncovers disturbing secrets while visiting his white girlfriend's family.
"Hereditary" (2018) - This film explores themes of grief and family trauma, delivering a deeply unsettling experience with strong performances and a haunting atmosphere.
"A Quiet Place" (2018) - Directed by John Krasinski, this film creates tension through silence, as a family must live in a world inhabited by sound-sensitive monsters.
"The Conjuring" (2013) - Based on true events, this supernatural horror film follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they help a family terrorized by a dark presence.
"Midsommar" (2019) - A visually stunning folk horror film by Ari Aster that explores themes of grief and relationships within a disturbing Swedish festival.
"It Follows" (2014) - This unique horror film features a supernatural entity that relentlessly pursues its victims, creating a sense of dread and paranoia.
"The Babadook" (2014) - A psychological horror that delves into themes of motherhood and grief, focusing on a mother and son haunted by a sinister presence.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a mix of psychological and supernatural horror, start with "Get Out" for its thought-provoking narrative and social commentary. For a more traditional horror experience, "The Shining" is a must-watch for its iconic status and chilling atmosphere.
