What Redditors are Saying

Top Horror Movies to Watch

TL;DR For a thrilling horror experience, consider classics like "The Thing" and "Psycho," modern hits like "Hereditary" and "Us," and unique gems such as "Oculus" and "Mother!" for psychological depth.

Classic Horror Films

Several discussions highlighted classic horror films that have stood the test of time. "The Thing" (1982) is frequently recommended for its suspenseful atmosphere and groundbreaking special effects [2:1][4:3]. Other classics include "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974), "Psycho" (1960), and "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), all praised for their iconic status in the horror genre [2:1][3:4][4:6].

Modern Horror Hits

Modern horror films offer fresh takes on traditional scares. "Hereditary" is often mentioned for its intense psychological horror and unsettling family dynamics [3]. "Us" by Jordan Peele is noted for its social commentary intertwined with horror elements [1:1]. "Oculus" (2013) is praised for its dread-filled narrative and effective jump scares [5:1][5:2].

Creature Features and Gore

For fans of creature features and gore, movies like "The Ritual" and "Malignant" are recommended for their scary creatures and graphic scenes [1:1]. The "Wrong Turn" series is also suggested for those who enjoy intense gore and survival horror [1:3].

Psychological and Atmospheric Horror

Films that delve into psychological horror and atmospheric tension include "Mother!" which is described as inducing a sense of social claustrophobia [5:3], and "Enemy," which offers a psychological thriller experience [5:1]. "The Witch" is noted for its slow-building dread and atmospheric storytelling [3:5].

Unique and Lesser-Known Gems

Some lesser-known but highly recommended films include "The Relic" (1997) for its unique monster concept [3:2], and "Pyewacket" for its unexpected thrills [5:4]. "Castle Freak" (1995) is another intriguing choice for those looking to explore beyond mainstream offerings [2:8].

These recommendations span a wide range of horror sub-genres, ensuring there's something for every horror enthusiast's taste. Whether you prefer classic thrillers, modern psychological horror, or creature features, these films promise to deliver spine-chilling experiences.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm just looking for new horror movies to watch. If anybody knows some really good ones I would love to hear your recommendations. My personal favorite types are ones with the "scary creatures" and lots Of Gore.

You ever catch Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight? One of my all time favorites. Great monsters, good gore, great cast. Campy yet still kinda scary.

Must-watch horror movies?

Posted by flloydraine · in r/HorrorMovies · 3 years ago

As most of you horror enthusiasts here, I've been watching, playing and reading horror since I can remember, but lately I've been feeling a little stuck in a rut. So, I've decided to make a little list of some classic, must-watch movies that I've been ignoring for the entirety of my life (don't judge me, I know y'all have those too). Although I've seen a fair share of horror movies, I've never completed franchises like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Child's Play and so on... (ofc I've seen the originals, but not much what comes after) so I would love some help with my list.

there's really no restrictions -I like everything, from 80's cheesy slashers to new age psychological horror, Sci-Fi, creature features, ghosts, literally anything from any decade, no limits!

Re-Animator (1985) The Beyond (1981) The Thing (1982) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1, 2 and honestly 3 The Wicker Man (1973) Hellraiser 1 and 2 (keep going if you like. I love them all, but there are a lot, and they do fall off) Oculus (2013) The House of the Devil (2009) Pyscho 1, 2 and 3 Mandy (2018) American Werewolf in London (1981)

The Witch. It’s slow and atmospheric but the dread just crawls under your skin, and by the end it feels like you’ve watched a nightmare unfold.

I've seen The Witch, for some reason it just didn't do much for me at all! Maybe because I feel like Eggers work has got progressively better with each film. Seeing his later work before I saw The Witch just made it so it didn't live up to the hype?

Help me pick which are the best ones to watch!

Posted by Belachick · in r/horror · 1 month ago

I have a list of movies that have been recommended to me but I am just not sure where to start or which might be the best one. Can you guys help me? I'm in a bit of a downer the last few weeks and a good horror movie is something I can look forward to in the evening! These are what I have on my list:

  • Before I Wake (2016)
  • Enemy (2013) - not a horror, as such, but psychological horror I guess
  • It Comes At Night (2017)
  • Oculus (2013)
  • Mother! (2017)
  • Pyewacket (2017)
  • The Harbinger (2022)
  • Hellbender

Or, if there are similar ones to these you think I should/could add - please let me know :)

I tried watching Oculus, but turned it off—couldn’t get into it for some reason. I’ve seen it praised a lot, so maybe I’ll give it another shot.

Pyewacket was lit, and I wasn’t expecting it to be.

I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for good horror movies. some of my favorites are: saw II, evil dead (2013), the descent, night of the living dead, bride of frankenstein, aliens, hereditary, etc… I really love the vibe of early 2000s movies but I’ll watch any era. any suggestions would help, thanks!

Trick ‘r Treat is the best Halloween movie there is imo. It’s more of a Halloween holiday movie than the film Halloween.

That said, absolutely watch it but to get in the spirit it’ll be way more fun if you watch in October when it’s Halloween season.

In comparison to the Halloween franchise, I feel those movies mostly only feature the holiday subtlety so you can enjoy those anytime.

That’s a good list they made, and a really great idea if you’re dipping your toes in for the first time… The Shining is to this day still incredibly unnerving and immersive - beautifully shot and acted. Psycho is fantastic, and so is Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. That movie was a revelation for me because up to that point I did not think anything shot in black and white could even come close to being as scary as a modern day film, but Hitchcock knew what he was doing
