ORIGINAL POST

Hey everyone! I'm in the mood for a good thriller, but not the typical big-name ones. I’m talking about those hidden gems that fly under the radar. Anyone have any underrated thrillers you’d recommend? Bonus points if they’ve got a twist ending!

Requesting underrated / lesser known thriller movies

Just watched Blow Out! (1981) upon recommendation and really enjoyed it. I had never heard of it before, which got me thinking how many other good thriller films have flown under my radar, as it is one of my favourite genres. Recommend some hidden gem thriller movies. Please try and keep suggestions 1970’s and after as I’ve seen a lot of the classics prior to this and have a hard time getting into the more obscure older movies. Foreign films are encouraged as Im probably missing a ton of these.

Ill include my own list of favourite thrillers to start:

Gone Girl

Mother (2009)

Parasite

Get Out

Shutter Island

Prisoners

Nightcrawler

The Invisible Guest

The Wailing

Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo

The Gift

The Invitation

Eyes Wide Shut

Calibre

Black Swan

I think the prequel comes out next month and DO NOT watch the trailer or read the synopsis of the prequel 'till you've watched Orphan or you'll get spoiled on the great plot twist of the first movie.

I’ve seen the big ones like Se7en, Prisoners, and Zodiac, but I’m looking for something lesser-known that deserves more love. It could be a hidden gem, a foreign thriller, or an older film that doesn’t get enough attention.

What are some underrated, great psychological horror/thriller films?

Red Eye. This is one you don’t hear about often, mainly because the late Wes Craven was known for being a man who made straight up horror films, like Nightmare on Elm Street (the original, not the remake). Red Eye will totally mess with your head.

Possessor

Nightcrawler

Calibre

The guilty (2018 European version), this is a great great movie

Lots of black mirror episodes, lots of love death and robots episodes

Memento

May be too tame (certainly not horror) but more of a slow burn would be "The Conversation"

It's a war movie but Full Metal Jacket (and maybe even Platoon)

Collateral (more suspense/thriller)

Silence of the lambs

Red dragon

Prisoners

Mystic river -It's a mystery/police story but very cerebral and dark, may stray too far from your request

Enemy - super abstract, don't expect a traditional story/ending

The killing of a sacred deer - fucked up and kinda abstract

RevolutionaryJob9300 · 1 year ago

Im going to have to strongly disagree as well. I absolutely loved Coherence. Loved seeing how the collision of all those alternate realities can come about and how it messes with the people within. Also, there was no budget to rely on CGI/SFX, so they really had to have a strong script/plot for it to hold up and it did - amazingly well. I wish I could see it again for the first time.

1 upvotes on reddit
RevolutionaryJob9300 · 1 year ago

I know I am late to the party (in fact I have missed the party altogether), but I had to comment due to my strong feelings towards your comment! Coherence was fricken amazing imo. It all takes place in one house basically, so maybe that puts people off, but the whole concept was epic. It just felt somewhat realistic (which is rare for alternate dimension/reality type films) and I enjoyed speculating what I would do that situation.

Could you guys recommend some underrated murder mystery or suspense thriller movies/shows that are gripping from start to finish? I’m open to films in any language, as long as they keep the tension high and maintain an engaging storyline until the very end. I’d love something with unexpected twists, clever storytelling, or a unique take on the genre.

Looking for unconventional thrillers — something beyond the usual tropes?

Posted by carelesslie0 · in r/MovieSuggestions · 3 months ago

I'm in the mood for a good thriller — but I'm tired of the same formulaic stuff: the detective with a drinking problem, the obvious twist endings, or the villain reveal in the last 10 minutes.

I'm looking for thrillers that break the mold — something that plays with structure, tone, or perspective. Psychological thrillers, atmospheric slow burns, genre blends — I'm open to anything that feels fresh or weirdly compelling.

Some thrillers I loved: Prisoners Enemy Coherence Incendies Time crimes Primer Oldboy Mullholland drive Handmaiden Confession Perfect Blue Forgotten The call Psycho Donnie Darko Prestige The usual suspects Nightcrawler Arrival Interstellar Black Swan

If you’ve seen something that made you go “what did I just watch?” or kept you unsettled for hours after, I want to see it. I am ready to get traumatized and stuff so don't need to hold back on suggestions.

Good lesser known thriller horror films?

Posted by Alternative-Ant-4741 · in r/horror · 3 years ago

I'm a big horror movie buff and almost exclusively watch horror films : they help me relax, which might sound contradictory. Anyway I really love road trip themed films like Carriers, Jeepers Creepers, Joy Ride, Hitcher etc. The sad thing is most commonly known movies on similar themes I've already seen. Are there any lesser known but enjoyable and well made horror movies in this genre? I'd love to see them. Thanks

underrated thriller movies

Here are some underrated thriller movies to consider:

  1. "The Invitation" (2015)

    • A tense psychological thriller about a dinner party that takes a dark turn. The slow build-up creates an unsettling atmosphere.
  2. "Coherence" (2013)

    • A mind-bending sci-fi thriller that explores the effects of a cosmic event on a group of friends. It’s low-budget but highly effective in creating suspense.
  3. "The Gift" (2015)

    • A gripping story about a married couple whose life is disrupted by an old acquaintance. The film cleverly plays with themes of revenge and guilt.
  4. "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" (2016)

    • A chilling horror-thriller that follows a father-son coroner team as they uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding a young woman's death.
  5. "The Fall" (2006)

    • A visually stunning film that blends fantasy with thriller elements. It tells the story of a stuntman who spins a tale for a young girl in a hospital.
  6. "The Machinist" (2004)

    • A psychological thriller featuring Christian Bale as an insomniac factory worker. The film explores themes of guilt and paranoia, with a haunting atmosphere.

Recommendation: If you're looking for something that combines suspense with psychological depth, I highly recommend "The Invitation." Its slow-burn tension and unexpected twists make it a standout in the genre. For a more cerebral experience, "Coherence" is perfect, as it keeps you guessing and engaged throughout.
