Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these recommendations provide a solid starting point, it's important to consider your personal preferences in gameplay mechanics and genre. Some players may prefer more action-oriented narratives, while others might enjoy slower-paced, story-rich experiences. Exploring trailers, reviews, and gameplay videos can help you make an informed decision based on your interests.
I've always been a big fan of games with a good story mode like uncharted for example.
Any good recommendations for good story mode games similar to uncharted or just ones that have good storylines
All of the Playstation hits like God of War, Spiderman, Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn are amazing stories
Spiderman, spiderman miles morales, the last of us, the last of us part 2, Detroit become human, and until dawn is the best stories in my opinion. And I guess I would count ghost of Tsushima director's cut, I think the main thing I don't like is the horse back riding and some of the side quests. I think if I had a PS4, instead of a ps5 it would of not been good for me and I would of return the game🤷♀️
Horozon Forbidden West :)) You can check the Graphics and Gameplay here: Looks INCREDIBLE on PS5 https://youtu.be/g_i7rLRAS80
Those have all more or less a big emphasis on story. There’s a lot of different gameplay between those however, so you need to check out what you like most.
I was going to post my own list, but yours almost 100% matches mine. The only things I would add are Horizon Zero Dawn, Gone Home, and Telltale’s The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. Also maybe Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture if OP finds they are into the “walking simulator” genre.
Disco Elysium has some of, if not the best video game writing of the past 20 years.
A Plague Tale is also a great one to check out in addition to what the rest have mentioned.
RDR2 has one of the best narratives in a video game in recent memory.
It's already free if you have a PS5 on the PS plus collection.
Surprised it took this long. Best story game I’ve played. I’m not a big gamer but man… this one is good
It's the most immersive IMO. Beacuse it's not an open world gane.
Great story and world, bui found the gameplay so boring I couldn't finish it
Mass effect legendary edition is three games and u load ur save from the end of one to the next so ur choices carry over. There is romance thou but it’s easy to avoid.
Shameless self plug: https://catholicgamereviews.com/category/platform/ps5/
Final Fantasy X, Guardians of the Galaxy, Outer Wilds, Star Wars: Jedi games, Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales, Alien Isolation, Hollow Knight.
death stranding, can be boring but once you play it enough it should click. if not could always watch youtube videos. and the sequel is releasing real soon. unless you got digital deluxe edition for early access
RDR2 is probably my favorite story in gaming. I also enjoyed God of War and I'm currently working through Ghost of Tsushima, which is like RDR with samurai.
So I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older, the story of a game matters more to me than mechanics.
The Rockstar Games, TLOU/2, Uncharted, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima are about the only titles I’ve gotten REALLY into in recent years.
Finished Control but never got super motivated by it. CoD is fine for the occasional distraction but not very engaging. Recently started Horizon Zero Dawn and it’s not really catching my attention either.
Loved the Spider-Man games, hate the Avengers one. Loathed my Returnal experience.
With all that in mind, what should I give a shot?
I keep circling back to Dead by Daylight each time a new attempt fails to engage me, and I’m SO tired of it.
Edit: Thanks everyone. This is all very helpful.
Horizon zero dawn didn’t grab me at first either. I played like 6-8 hours and just couldn’t get into it. I picked it back up a few years later and I am so glad I did. It’s a phenomenal game with an amazingly good story, gameplay, and so on. DO NOT GIVE UP ON HORIZON. As a fellow story based game player, you would totally be missing out.
Also add Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls. I remember I enjoyed playing thesr trio last year back to back.
The revelation about Project Zero Dawn blew my mind. Aloy's normal trails and tribulations were kind of dull, but once they let that cat out of the bag; I was hooked.
I dont see it mentioned much but A Plague Tale: Innocence really surprised me in terms of story and gameplay. Highly recommend!
If you go this route just be aware that it is very evidently made on a lower budget than say, Uncharted or some of the other games you mentioned enjoying. It does have a good story, however I found the voice acting and some of the character models/animations to be a bit janky and take me out of the experience. But overall, if you know what to expect it can be a fun experience.
There'll also be a sequel, so best time to start with this
However a hidden gem that unfortunately not a lot of people liked is Order 1886. It's very story driven, probably the closest to tlou and the whole world is just amazing
Or go with Scarlet Nexus if you're more into anime style. Heard it has a very good story too
Mass Effect trilogy. Great time to play with legendary edition just out.
This trilogy has the best character development in any game and I’m not talking about just the protagonist but also every notable NPC in the games. Should be way higher up in this thread.
This is the only reason I finished the game, lore was great but this game had the most boring characters ever, Aloy might be the most boring protagonist I've ever played. Side quests were bad too, had to stop doing them and just do the main quests
Persona 5 Royal. I myself not an anime fan but this game captivated me just a few hours in, great for story and gameplay I'd say, very much recommended.
Totally agree. I never played a jrpg, and was never a fan of anime, but I gave it a try. I was hooked after the first few hours. I had no idea the game would be so huge. 120 hours of amazement. It’s in my top 5 on PS4 for sure.
Plus you can sorta treat Persona 5 on PS+ as a demo for Royal. If you like it, buy Royal. It goes on sale for 20€ ish all the time too
I'll list all the games I've played so far: Grand Theft Auto:The Trilogy, Minecraft Story Mode: The Complete Adventure, The Last of Us Part 1 and 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, all Spider-Man games, Beyond: Two Souls, Stray, Hitman, God of War 3 and God of war ragnarok, GTA 5, The Walking Dead, Little Nightmares, Ghost of tsushima, Detroit become human, Cyberpunk 2077, far cry 3, horizon zero dawn and all Uncharted games. These are all the games I've played, and I hope someone can suggest more ideas. Online games aren't bad, but they're not really my thing, plus I don't have a PlayStation Plus subscription. Thank you in advance to everyone who reads this and is ready to suggest game ideas. :)
the Batman: Arkham series, thought you won’t get to play Origins unless you have PS Plus.
Yakuza games have some of the tightest writing in gaming. Keeps you on the edge until the end. I'd recommend:
Like a dragon: Yakuza -> Watch Kiryu's story on YT or play Yakuza 0 to 6 (I watched) -> Like a dragon: The man who erased his name -> Like a dragon: Infinite wealth
Based on your list:
The Witcher 3
God of War 2018
Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy 7 Remake + Rebirth
Alan Wake 2
Mass Effect trilogy
Nier Automata
A Plague Tale Innocence + Requiem
Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Sony did free enhancement for God of War 2018 on PS5 btw
First of all, it looks like you have great taste .
I'd just add....
Far Cry 4&5
Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy
Batman: Arkham Trilogy
A Plague Tale
Jedi: Fallen Order & Survivor
Titanfall 2
Wolfenstein Series
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Mass Effect Trilogy
Guardians of the Galaxy
Shadow of Mordor & War
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll most likely continue with the Far Cry games, and I can also continue with Batman since I used to play them on PlayStation 3
Can't go wrong there. It's simply an amazing series, I'm currently playing FC3 right now
I love story games! Some of my favorites you’ve already played.
My suggestions:
•Alan Wake (both of them)
•Control
•Assassins Creed Ezio Trilogy
•Baldurs Gate 3
•Doki Doki Literature Club
•Until Dawn
•Mass Effect trilogy
•Firewatch
•A Plague Tale (both of them)
A lot of people recommend Alan Wake, so it seems like both games are really good. Thanks for the game recommendations! :)
The first one is ancient and hasn't aged well. The second is top 5 game of this generation.
was wondering if you guys could help me select a new game to play. i’ve been rolling steady on games since i switched from xbox to ps5, but i’ve stalled out on knowing phenomenal games to play. what i’ve played since switching (played red dead 2, and Witcher 3 before switching, ik those will be popular replies): ghost of Tsushima spider-man 1 + 2 fallen order + survivor AC shadows tlou 1 + 2 split fiction black myth wukong and i just finished GOW 2018 and ragnarok back to back. the stories in most of these really hooked me and i’d love another game that does the same! not a big top down or turn based fan, if that helps narrow it down. i also tried elden ring and did not find the difficulty super enjoyable/rewarding.
Yakuza 0. Horizon series. Heavy Rain. Nanairo Reincarnation.
Expeditiom 33 has one of the best stories in all of gaming ❤️
OP says they are not into turn-based stuff. Their loss I guess, they are also going to miss out on Baldur's Gate 3 and Persona 5 Royal.
Path of Exile 2
New World
Diablo IV
Expedition 33! so good!
so i’ve heard, i just can’t do turn-based combat, i want more control lol
Yeah that’s fair. It has pretty good systems to give yourself more turns and there is a real time parry/dodge mechanic so you can parry their attacks or dodge them.
I saw some of the games you listed are not exactly narrative focused (I would never say that about GoT or Spiderman for example) but they still have an interesting story, world, & characters that are complimented by fun gameplay. So here's my suggestions, with varying levels of focus on narrative:
And also, if you ever get over your dislike of turn-based or top-down games, the storytelling in these games are really great:
so i’m an avid story game lover, my favourites being dbh, heavy rain and beyond two souls (can you tell i love quantic dream) and i’m desperate for a new game to play, particularly on ps+ but it’s fine if it’s not. i’ve been playing rdr2 recently but im still on chapter one and i just can’t get through it (yes i know chap1 is supposed to be one of the most boring ones and that it gets better later) i’m mostly focused on non open world games that are mainly story based and don’t include jumpscares games i’ve played that i really enjoyed are: dbh, lost records, road 96, mile 0, beyond two souls, heavy rain, all lis games and spiderman miles morales although i wasn’t the greatest fan of that thanks !!
The Last of Us, Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch, Oxenfree, God of War (2018), Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
yes, i forgot to add edith finch to the list, was a great game, think i might give oxenfree a try given the great reviews
I heard Taltalle games are good - I only played “Batman” - and yeah, it was very cool! In the same style, and also based on comic - “Blacksad: Under the Skin” is pretty nice noir game; if cartoon style graphics aren’t a problem - “Goodbye Volcano High” & “Night in the Woods” are absolutely great, and “Fall of Porcupine” is also good; if its management gameplay is fine by you - “Spiritfarer” has great, but very sad story; “Mafia Definitive Edition” is probably the best mob story, among all videogames (it’s linear, also has separate open-world-sandbox mode); if you haven’t try already- both parts of “The Last of Us” must be mentioned, but that’s well known franchise, and with action & stealth gameplay.
yess i’ve wanted to try telltale games for a while !! i’m also desperate to try tlou but because i’m lowk a pussy it’s just the sheer amount of jumpscares holding me back😭
Yeah, I’m not too good with horrors either - but TLOUs should be fiiiinne… (I think…. Maybe - it was fine for me :P)
The Invincible
Final Fantasy XVI (16)- you don’t need to play any others to understand it.
Lost in Random
Death Stranding
Ghost of Tsushima
Ratchet and Clank-A Rift Apart
Forgotton Anne
What Remains of Edith Finch
Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture
Journey
Nier Automata
what’s death stranding about ? i’ve heard a lot about how good it is and i think its on my gamepass so i was going to download it and i’m just going in blind
Oohhh boy. lol Well to simplify it as best I can: mankind has partially discovered tangible objective evidence of where people go after they die. Or at least the space in between wherever mystery place they end up. But something has gone wrong and people aren’t passing through anymore. And the world has become chaotic along with it.
You play the role of a porter (delivery person/post apocalyptic Amazon worker) braving the wilds to deliver packages to people isolated and hunkering down, afraid of what’s happening around them. You help them reconnect, literally and figuratively, to other people and communities.
But that’s just a small portion. The story very quickly gets pretty wild. lol
Control
SOMA
Still Wakes the Deep
Guys i want to know some good story driven games on ps plus. I have played the following games and really liked them. 1.Last of us 2.God of war 3.Ghost os tsushima 4. Detroid become human 5. Horizon zero dawn( and forbidden west) 6. Devil May Cry 5
I really loved these games and was wondering if anyone could recommend more games like these or any good story games.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Life is Strange: True Colors, The Quarry, Scarlet Nexus, Judgment, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Stray, Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
FF7R is a must, along with FF16
Facts. FF16 was incredible. As was FF7R.
Guardians is a great shout!
Guardians is the answer. Stray? Not great.
Last of us 2 is a no brainer if you enjoyed the first. I think they're both incredible games. Red Dead 2 as well is a masterclass in single player world building.
Agree with both, but neither is on the service, I believe. They're both good enough to warrant coming out of pocket, though.
Best thing about ps+ for me is it gives me games to play while I wait for things I want to go on sale. Picked up rdr2 ultimate edition for $30 ($70 discount). And I didn’t have to wait long. But it was just on sale so no telling how long until it’s on sale again.
Any of the uncharted games, any of the tomb raider games
Yeah the RGG games have some really long finales lol
I was looking forward to this game and finally got to play. Im a chapter or two in. Its really slow and I dont really follow the story. I beat up these tiny imp monsters and one big ghosty dude. and what?
Keep going a bit further? will the story pick up?
Ff16 very story driven
Already played almost all the suggestions here so looking for some new stuff. Played rdr2 stray re biohazard the bio shock games the souls games ghost of tushima plague tail games and to many others. What do you guys think?
I'm not sure what a story game is, but I recommend In Sound Mind, Darq, and Deathloop.
Horizon games, last of us games, uncharted games, Spider-Man games.
Are the horizon games what everyone says they are? I’ve been think about playing them
Not sure what everyone is saying but I had a blast playing both of them. Catch the first one on a sale and try it then.
Have you played Life is Strange?
Have you played detroit become human?
Yup
Just to give you some context, I was a heavy gamer in the NES / SNES / PS1 era. I still played into my late teens but eventually stopped gaming for a while. Last consoles I owned were PS2 and Xbox 360. After well over a decade of no console gaming, I bought a PS5 a few months ago, spur of the moment. It has been great and has rejuvenated my love of video games. I've also been able to play some great games I missed over the years.
On top of that, my wife has really been enjoying some of these games, mainly for the story. There are some games I'll play for a quick dopamine hit (Forza Horizon or THPS) but at night once the kids are in bed, we'll kind of settle on the couch and she'll watch me play something and it has been fun!
So, I'm looking for other (PS5 playable) games that have great, immersive, interesting stories, and games where the story is a very predominant part of the game (i.e., preferably avoiding games where the story takes a backseat to the gameplay for very extended periods of time).
As an example, here are some of the games we've both loved, specifically ones where she really liked watching the story as I played:
Thanks in advance!
Alan Wake Remastered and Alan Wake 2 (you can slot Control in-between as well but still get a great story regardless)
Ghost of Tsushima
Days Gone
Tomb Raider 2013 and its sequels
Uncharted series
Spider-Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
Final Fantasy VII Remake + Rebirth or Final Fantasy XVI
A Plague Tale
Persona 5 Royal
The Bioshock games
The Mass Effect and Dragon Age series
Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3
Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures games and The Quarry (all but Until Dawn also have 2 player modes if she'd maybe want to get involved with more simple point and click mechanics. Games like The Wolf Among Us and Life is Strange would also be great for this).
Life is Strange. Me and my wife enjoyed it
Detroit Become Human is one of the best story games I've ever played.
Telltale the walkin dead and Wolf among us are are the only game my GF ever liked watxhin me play, and she can even play herself !
Good stories where she can help with choices
The best recommendations I can think of on PS5 are:
Uncharted Series (the best ones are from 2 onwards, the first one is a bit dated)
God Of War series (starting with the 2018 reboot)
Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy is one of the best stories I've ever played
Horizon Zero Dawn (and its sequel, Forbidden West) has a great story and is beautiful to look at.
has anyone got any recommendations for ps5 games? I play very story - based games of fandoms and worlds I am familiar with. Outlaws, Fallen order and survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. I love being able to interact with heaps of different npc and feel like you are developing a real personality in the game. Needs to be lots to do and an intriguing storyline. Any recommendations for games like this ? thank you
Skyrim, Horizon Zero Dawn (1&2) the storyline of Destiny or Destiny 2, Red Dead Redemption, God of War (not a whole of of relationship with npc but still a great play) I really enjoyed FarCry Primal
Have you tried Horizon Zero Dawn? It is not from any known franchise, but it is a beautiful world, with a very interesting story. There are lots of npcs to interact with in the open world.
If I am not mistaken, it will be adapted into a series by Netflix
This is the answer. Deep lore, fascinating story, excellent player character, and tons of NPCs to interact with. It’s also absolutely gorgeous. The best part is, if you like it, there’s Horizon Forbidden West that you can jump right into.
And the DLCs!
Red Dead Redemption 2 for sure. It’s by far one of the best games I have ever played
Marvel Rivals? It's free.
Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and Days Gone. All great PS open world story driven games.
top narrative games for PS5
Here are some top narrative games for PS5 to consider:
The Last of Us Part I
Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Life is Strange: True Colors
Returnal
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Recommendation: If you’re looking for a deeply emotional experience, The Last of Us Part I is a must-play due to its masterful storytelling and character development. For a more action-oriented narrative, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut offers a beautiful world and an engaging story. Each of these games provides a unique narrative experience that showcases the strengths of the PS5.
