Need Recommendation: Strategy/RTS/Top-Down

Posted by irishstereotype · in r/iosgaming · 4 months ago

Howdy all,

I don’t do much mobile gaming. I’ve got periods of downtime I need to kill during my schedule right now so I’m looking for something.

I like strategy, rts or top downs. Rogue lites and some tactical shooter style games as well. Something with a persistent progress or upgrade system would be a bonus.

I’d prefer a game that isn’t built on a micro system or ad generation system. I’m happy to pay for the game upfront.

I’d prefer a game that can be played using only the phone and doesn’t encourage or require a gamepad or backbone addon.

The store is really hard to get a feel for what is AI trash and most of the decent games look like microtransaction or “energy” based games.

Appreciate any suggestions!

EDIT: to be clear, I’m fine if micros are in the game as long as they are optional and not designed to artificially slow your progress if you don’t purchase more.

Song of Conquest is good, though more tactical than top-down RTS.

What's everyone playing on mobile to satisfy their strategy cravings?

Posted by Total_Doubt514 · in r/4Xgaming · 2 years ago

I'm a mobile gamer (please don't hurt me), but that's only as of late. I grew up playing RTS, 4x, and Grand Strategy games.

I've tried out Call of Dragons, Rise of Kingdoms, and some others games on mobile (King of Avalon, Guns of Glory, etc.), but they really weren't my cup of tea. It's not the P2W aspect at all though, it's just the tedious nature of building & waiting, marching & waiting, etc. that wore me out.

Just curious to see what everyone else is playing (if anything) to satisfy their strategy game itch on mobile. I personally have been enjoying Battle for Polytopia, but the scale of it always made it feel more like a casual puzzle game to me.

  • Unciv: opensouce Civ5 clone, not yet fully feature complete but steady development. Runs on Java so there are Linux/Mac/Windows/Android builds, but not sure about iPhone.

"What is the best... car, or smartphone, or coffe, or.... ets"? Can you answer at least one of these questions and be sure that your answer is correct?

"Best-worst" - isn't that pure subjectivity? Why are you asking a question that obviously has no objective answer?

Age of Conquest IV - good, amazing game, I know it. But "best".... I can't say that. Compare this game to, for example, the (legendary, timeless classic): Birth of the Empires, or Uciana. And to be completely honest, even Heart of Galaxy I personally like more. Even more I like Solaris, Andromeda: Rebirth of Humanity, or Hades Star. But this is a completely different conversation, because. these are MMO games and should not be compared to offline games. From offline strategies, I recommend trying Age of Ottoman and Demise of Nations.

I have been injecting Balatro directly into my veins the last couple months. Hitting a god run is like winning a decent amount in a scratch off. Plus it really allows you to be creative and take a different approach each and every run, not to mention the different decks and how that can entirely change your strategy.

Before that, I was hooked on a game called 1010!, there’s a bunch more popular (and worse imo) ripoffs with different grid sizes and what not. One of those perfect offline games. It’s like Tetris but you place the pieces at your own pace. They started adding power ups and I lost interest because my high score was the only thing keeping me going and it didn’t feel legit anymore, I’ll still play it when I don’t have service or WiFi though.

I dont usually spend more than $1.99 on a mobile game if I can help it & Balatro was $10 & so it was a big gamble for me but I def got my moneys worth from it at this point.

Good mobile strategy games

Posted by NanookoftehNorth · in r/AndroidGaming · 2 years ago

What are some of the best strategy games on android?
The play store top chart for premium strategy is messed up (I know right?), so it's hard to determine what's good.

On PC I am loving Total War: Warhammer 3, but I hesitate to buy into other ported total war titles on Android since I don't imagine them to be particularly good or easy to pick up and play on Android.

I loved Starcraft and Starcraft II back in the day. Iron Marines is the only one that people seemed to have recommended in the past, but the art-style is off putting to me. However, if people think it's good past that, maybe I'll give it a shot. Northgard people were saying the DLC doesn't come with it so I'm not sure it's worth it, but I haven't played the PC game.

I tried X-COM 2 on android, and I realize such a game is a little intense to play on mobile. Hard to just pick up and play with long loading screens and the intensity of combat where if you mess up things get pretty gnarly.

I like idle games, and I'm not sure what ones are good in the strategy idle genre. I used to play a long form pvp game called "Conspiracy" based on the board game Diplomacy. Trying to summarize Diplomacy, it's risk but everyone takes their turns at the same time and there's no dice rolling. The game is more about communication since you can't get much done by yourself. The turns in this format are often done once or twice per day, and you'd be messaging people all day about what to do.

Loved Slay the Spire, I played it to death.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Looking for strategy games

Posted by SS_Scorpion · in r/AndroidGaming · 2 years ago

So I'm looking for strategy games with good monetization, single player and that are preferably offline. I'm ok with dlcs or the game being paid but I don't like anything pay to win or with excessively grindy multiplayer although I am open to games with multiplayer that aren't like that. Not a fan of anything too old either(like before 2010) or way too cartoony.

Here are a list of games I've played and enjoyed

XCOM XCOM 2 Door kickers Door kickers 2 Northgard SimCity (to some extent)

It looked really boring from the screenshots so I've been kinda avoiding it. Can you describe what it's like

1 upvotes on reddit
dibade89 · 2 years ago

It's kind of a rogue like rts game. You have a small squad of own troops, which you can evolve during sessions. In one session your squad is on an island which gets invaded be waves of enemies. Your job is to protect the houses on the island and also kill the invading troops. This can be tricky because they usually have much more manpower, so you have to make benefit of the individual skills of your troops and also the landscape.

3 upvotes on reddit
E
eudemonist · 2 years ago

Squad positional tactics, with units of archery/infantry/pike to position and move, to take advantage of terrain features like bottlenecks or elevation. Of course there are abilities/powers/etc, but that's the gist of it.

1 upvotes on reddit
E
ElWrobel · 2 years ago

In addition to what dibade89 said, it's a game of positioning and paper, rock and scissors.

For example, you see a boat of warriors coming in, you position your shielded troops to intercept them. Archers come in, you slam them with your warriors and so on. Positioning matters a lot and most often it won't be as easy as I described.

Overall, I second the opinion that it's not amazing, a little too shallow for that, but it's pretty good fun, well suited for mobile and for short sessions.

Key Considerations for Mobile Strategy Games:

  1. Gameplay Depth: Look for games that offer a mix of tactical depth and strategic planning. A good strategy game should challenge your decision-making skills.

  2. User Interface: Since you're playing on mobile, a clean and intuitive interface is crucial for a smooth gaming experience.

  3. Multiplayer Options: Many players enjoy competing against others. Games with robust multiplayer modes can enhance replayability.

  4. Updates and Support: Choose games that receive regular updates and have an active community, as this often leads to improved gameplay and new content.

  5. Free-to-Play vs. Paid: Consider whether you prefer free-to-play games with in-app purchases or premium games that require a one-time purchase.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Clash of Clans: A classic in mobile strategy, it combines base building with real-time battles. Great for both solo and multiplayer experiences.

  2. Civilization VI: A mobile adaptation of the beloved PC game, it offers deep strategic gameplay with turn-based mechanics.

  3. XCOM: Enemy Within: A tactical turn-based game that combines strategy with RPG elements, focusing on squad management and combat.

Recommendation: If you enjoy deep strategy and tactical gameplay, Civilization VI is highly recommended for its rich content and engaging mechanics. For a more casual experience, Clash of Clans is great for quick sessions and social interaction.
