Current Top-Ranked US Players
As of the latest discussions, several American players have reached career-high rankings. Notably, Taylor Fritz is ranked 4th, Ben Shelton is 12th, and other rising stars like Alex Michelsen (32), Brandon Nakashima (33), Learner Tien (68), and Nishesh Basavareddy (101) are making significant strides [1]. This surge in talent highlights a promising future for American men's tennis.
American Women in Tennis
The American women continue to be dominant on the global stage. There are currently three American women in the top 5 of the WTA rankings, showcasing their consistent performance and success in major tournaments [1:2]. Historically, American women have been more accomplished than their male counterparts in recent decades, with players like Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin achieving Grand Slam victories
[1:3].
Prominent US Tennis Towns
Atlanta is often cited as one of the best places for tennis in the US due to its large number of players and extensive league systems like ALTA [4:1]. Florida is another popular location, especially for professional players, due to tax advantages and favorable weather conditions
[4:4]. Southern California is also considered ideal for amateur players due to its excellent weather
[4:5].
International Presence of US Players
The United States, along with Russia and Chile, is one of the few countries with multiple players in the ATP top 20, including Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Shelton [3]. This international presence underscores the depth of talent in American tennis, although the men have not been as successful in recent years compared to the women.
Up-and-Coming Talent
There is a lot of excitement around young American players who are beginning to make their mark on the international stage. Players like Basavareddy and Tien are seen as having great potential, and there is hope that they will soon join the ranks of top players [1:5]. The emergence of new talent in the top 100 indicates a dynamic shift and growth in US tennis
[5:6].
These insights reflect the current landscape of US tennis, highlighting both established stars and emerging talents poised to shape the future of the sport.
Feels like kind of a lot, but what do I know?
Fritz (4)
Shelton (12)
Michelsen (32)
Nakashima (33)
Tien (68)
Basavareddy (101)
Paul also reached a career high #9 a few weeks ago and then Rublev and Tsitsipas fucked around and won titles.
Impressive from them, but still remarkable how under-accomplished the American men are compared to American women in the last two decades.
There are 3 American women in the top 5 right now. Insane.
It is, and we're at a point where you can expect an American woman to win a slam most years, if not every year. They clean up at masters as well.
The men...not so much.
Even more than that. In like 1999-2005 we had Venus/Serena/Monica/Lindsay/Capriati all multi slam winners in the top 10. Tho ofc Monica was born Yugoslavian. And a few others like Chanda Rubin, Alexandra Stevenson, Amy Frazier hanging around the top 20.
American women gotta be tired of carrying American tennis on their backs ever since Roddick retired. It's insane how many have been so accomplished. Then you've got players like Stephens and Kenin who were able to swoop in and grab one time slams.
That's every sport though, American women are better everywhere than American men in the world stage.
Football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, swimming, athletics, overall medals per gender every Olympics too.
Could that be because female participation in sport is much higher for women in the US vs women in other countries? Not saying all countries, but in some that might be true.
A lot of exciting young talent coming up. Basavareddy has a lot of promise. Tien's game is truly unique and I hope to see him in the top ranks one day.
We're going back to the 80s when small US tournaments were just wall-to-wall rows of American flags.
So much talent in the top 50, and that’s not even including some of the younger guys like Tien or Fonseca who will soon be in there. Medjedovic another one.
Five players between the ATP and WTA. Go.
Sinner, iga, coco, fritz, alcaraz, and arya
Hold on, all your favourites are top players😭? With the exception of Fritz the other 4 are literally top 2 in men's and women's in terms of being slam contenders and rivals over the last few years
Is it crazy for someone to have their favorites be top players?
Jannik, Carlos, Iga, PaoPao, Jack. Honourable mentions: the Argentinian guys, Canadian girls, Czech b&g, and everybody playing doubles.
Sinner,Ruud,Zheng,Djokovic,Machac
Jannik, Fritz, Caspar, Coco, Iga
Alcaraz, Shelton, Ruud, Keys (she grew up in my hometown and went to the same tennis club I’d go to for hs practices and private lessons), and whoever Zverevs current opponent is lmao I’m a hater
Rublev, Medveded, Fritz, Tommy Paul, Shelton, Tabilo and Jarry.
I still find it hard to believe lol.
Only Russia has 2 in the top 10 😎
Top 100 AUS, France & Italy comes out well
Argentina too.
Chile is barely in with two (19th and 20th). Italy and France are not that far but it depends on Musetti/Mannarino.
My point is that little old Chile has achieved something only powerful countries with lots of resources can do, it’s weird.
We suck at football now, but at least we have this.
Twice, with two different duos.
Spain and Switzerland in shambles rn
If you include the WTA Top 20 then you can also add,
Poland (Swiatek/Hurkacz)
Greece (Tsitsipas/Sakkari)
Italy (Sinner/Paolini)
Fun fact. USA and Russia both have 1/4 of the Top 20 WTA players.
best place for tennis in USA?
Moved to Atlanta just for the tennis. It did not disappoint.
I’ll co-sign on Atlanta. But access to free/inexpensive court time given the rise of pickleball had been a real issue in the last few years. That being said, there is no shortage of people to play and leagues to play in. The timing of the Atlanta open (R.I.P.) was always abysmal, but it always surprised me that we couldn’t support anything more than a men’s 250 level tour event. I hope that changes sometime soon.
Pros live in Florida for tax reasons and warm winters. I think southern CA is the best place to live as an amateur. About 300 days with good weather a year.
> Pros live in Florida for tax reasons and warm winters.
Also because I think they consider it relatively central in terms of flying to major tournaments.
And because the USTA and IMG is there. Most grew up training in Bradenton
In addition to USTA we have a robust doubles league called ALTA which plays all four seasons. We also have a number of flex leagues (Ultimate Tennis, T2, League Tennis) for singles, doubles, or mixed with reasonable drive times to matches. There are maybe two weeks in the year where there is not some type of league tennis happening. Matches are my preferred way to play and improve but there are big tennis centers in each county that offer drills and other ways to play. We also have a good local chain of tennis gear stores called Your Serve that my family has been going to for 30+ years. Our one annual professional tournament just left but Atlanta is so spread out that it’s not a surprise that the tournament never found its fit. Sure, we have weather and that can put off matches, but weather is everywhere. Nothing can make you feel quite as invincible as winning a singles match in 90% humidity and 95 degrees.
Wilmington, NC has an enormous tennis community, relative to its population. Lessons for all levels, a ton of teaching pros, lots of facilities in city/county parks and high schools, country clubs and neighborhoods with private facilities, tournaments, leagues, ladders.....you name it, they have it. I pretty much play all year long except on days when it's really cold out, like below 40 degrees (temperate for some but after you're used to warm/hot weather, it's cold). The courts are mostly hard but we do have a couple of facilities with har-tru and I think all the country clubs have har-tru.
Lots of folks live in communities that have their own private courts. I go to my friends’ places or invite people to my gym that has courts.
It’s a great place to play tennis year-round. But so is California. If you remember when Isner said the Miami Open is more prestigious than Indian Wells due to hundreds of thousands less to pay in taxes from one’s winnings, well — he might obsess about taxes more than most due to his MAGA politics, but the reality is lots of athletes think like him. So ultimately, it’s a combination of both. It would have been one of the 2 most popular states for tennis in the US regardless, but it’s probably #1 over California due to its tax code
It’s a big mix: country clubs, neighborhood association courts (which are semi-private, but not a country club) and public courts.
I play in multiple leagues and I think the neighborhood association courts are most common type I end up at, but it’s fairly evenly distributed.
Not true at all, there are soooooo many tennis courts in Atlanta. I think a lot of people just tend to stick to what they know and dont bother to look for more.
Atlanta. Number of players is enormous. ATLA, the largest org for the leagues, has ~25 different levels of play, all filled with teams.
You can play all year round. Yes, it’s warm and humid in the summer, but not nearly as bad as places like Houston. Rest of the year is great.
On my block, which has ~26 houses, 14 adults play in an ALTA league, as one example of the participation levels.
Coleman Wong, Ignacio Buse for the men
Aoi Ito, Panna Udvardy, Emerson Jones, Francesca Jones, Destiny Aiava, Ella Seidel for the women.
I’m all for Buse too, my only hesitation is that the US Open is the only GS main draw that Kimmer Coppejans hasn’t played in, and he’s at the tail end of his career, so I wouldn’t be upset to see him make it instead of Buse.
That said, I’m behind Coleman all the way 🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰
Ohhh in that case I hope Coppejans wins for your sake!!! I just know tennis isn't very popular in Peru and I hope Buse going far changes that if at least a little bit.
All my men’s favs (besides Arthur and Jesper) ended up getting eliminated already 😭 but I’m thinking Prizmic and Mochizuki should be able to win their matches and hoping for a Wong win too
Me with Popko, Draxl, Stricker, Rodesch, and Holmgren... sigh. Sorry most of your favorites lost too! 😭
Yeah it’s been rough I cheer August too plus seeing Tirante, Juanma, Gigante, Burruchaga, Barrena, Monteiro, and Rodri all lose was also too sad 🥺 Sorry for your favs as well
Popko has been in Q3 multiple times, but never made it … so close yet so far.
Can’t believe Struff is having to qualify
Whenever somebody new enters the Top 100, we forget that somebody else is getting pushed out. There’s a lot of new guys entering the Top 100 recently.
Let's go Coleman!
Wu-Heads rise up
He was awesome against Van Assche
Is it Christian Pulisic or is it someone like Tim Howard or Clint Dempsey?
While Pulisic will undoubtedly take the clear lead in few years, as far as I can tell right now the top ones are close enough that we can't be sure who is richest. Estimates on Pulisic's net worth look to be around $15-$20 million, which is the same ballpark as Donovan and Dempsey, and only a little above Michael Bradley or Mia Hamm.
ETA: u/space_coyote6 got it right, I missed Brooks in the low $20s, who looks to be the reasonably clear winner.
I thought for a moment the answer might be Jozy Altidore if you count marital wealth, but Jozy's estimated at $8m with Sloane Stephens at $4m. So that puts them up there in the top group, but not as high as Pulisic, Donovan, or Dempsey.
ETA: Rapinoe + Bird is $3m+$8m, but by this measure Lauren Holiday has all of them beat by a lot with $1m+$30m.
The ertz’s too with a roughly 3+16 sound like strong contenders for 2nd.
Mia Hamm is married to Nomar Garciaparra. I think his worth is north of $50m. They're both part owners of LAFC too so they're investing in the soccer community in the US.
Not sure why you wouldn’t include Mia Hamm then. That would be $10m + $50m
Probably the Bundesliga lifers like Brooks, J Jones, F Johnson are up there.
Jermaine Jones is in the $10-$15, FabJo well below that, but it looks like you might have a winner with Brooks. I found one site estimating $22m which would be a pretty clear first.
Mia Hamm. Half of Nomahh's money...c'mon folks!!!!
I would bet Donovan or one of the womens players who likely made far more in endorsements.
Guys like Bocanegra and Berhalter might not be at the top now but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were in the $8-$10 million range based on their combined playing and coaching/front office earnings, and considering relative longevity and continuity in earnings while knowing nothing about their spousal earnings.
I'm not talking about UTR, NTRP, or wtn. I mean USTA national ranking, itf, atp, wta, etc
A long time ago I played a USTA top 50 in boys 18s who went on to play singles at top D1 program that fall. During warmups, I was redlining because I wanted to prove to myself and anyone watching that I could hang with this guy. Meanwhile, he was casually chatting with a buddy on the court next to us. The result was a double bagel but I did get to deuce in several games.
Many years later, I played a woman who formerly had a WTA ranking in the 800s. She was coming back from a layoff and slumming it in my league mostly 4.5 and 5.0 men. I was her first match back and was lucky enough to win in a third set tiebreak. She destroyed everyone else she played after that.
Oh that's super fun. Back when I was a junior we had a wta ~500 helping out during our summer camp. We played a match with the goal of hitting every single ball through the middle. Great shot tolerance test.
I love how u replied “that’s always fun that’s super fun” to every comment. U sound like a fun guy haha.
Got to play a high level D1 player in a charity tournament (open level, 5.0+) Back when I thought I was half decent. He played some futures. Got a wildcard into some local challengers. I was playing the best tennis of my life at the time. I lost 6-0, 6-0. He was not trying.
That's always fun. Makes you realize just how big that ball is when you're facing it. I got to play a guy who's making the semi's of challengers in doubles.
Not sure of their rank, but a cement wall. They seem to get every ball back.
I played a career high doubles 564 in USTA open doubles league. I think he had to self rate 7.0 and would casually flick kick serves above my head (6’2”).
You played in open as a 4.0?
Yeh how do the pros deal with the kick serves. They seem to have no problems lol
Either early or way back. A lot of players these days are staying back and ripping it rather than trying to square up an early return.
I'm in my 40s and usually only able to play once a week, so I typically play at a weak 4.5 level these days. I was pretty happy with the win.
Jessie Pegula. She beat my a—
Because he looks and plays like 45-yo John Krasinski and also was absent from the circuit for 2 years
Brooksby just outside the top 100. He’ll be on this list soon!
He was top 20 in 2021
I don’t watch tennis as much as I used too, but seeing Tiafoe being ranked 12th is incredible to me lol. I thought that he was in the 30s-40s at best.
He mainly just peaks at the US tournaments so feels over ranked the rest or the year
He reached the QF of Roland Garros THIS YEAR…what do you mean? No other American male (before he and Paul) had done so in over 20yrs.
I mean, that sounds about right.
Since 2022 there have been 31 completed Masters.
Seven players have won multiple with 22 between them: Alcaraz, Djokovic, Sinner, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, and Rublev
Nine players have won one: Fritz, Carreno Busta, Coric, Rune, Hurkacz, Popyrin, Draper, Mensik, Ruud.
Fritz is among the best one time winners. Probably most similar to Ruud and Rublev (the latter clearly the "worst" of the 2+ time winners)
Tiafoe and Paul would fit in with the one time winners, but closer to the worst than the best.
Shelton would also fit in with the one time winners, but more in line with the young but not megastar talent guys.
I like the kid a lot…he’s scrappy and I agree that his tennis IQ is high…one MASSIVE problem, he’s short. Maybe 5’10”…and while his serve will get better, it will only get 5’ 10” better…I just don’t think you can reach the top 10 consistently without a bigger serve and he can have the greatest 5’10” serve of all time, it’s just not going to get him enough free point against the top 25 to get there and stay there. I hope I’m wrong as I really like him, but I stood next to him last year and I’m 6’ and he might be 5’9” vs. 5’10”.
Opelka plays like he's 22. I swear all his matches have at least one tie break, due refuses to be aggressive on returns, he just loves serving
Our spiritual successor to Isner
He has really great tennis IQ, and he is great at finding a way to win. I also really like his ball striking, he seems to have good variety. He often gets a slow start (broken early) but he seems to be really good at figuring out how to hurt his opponents and often still comes out with a win. He seems to be really strong mentally, even keeled and focused. This is just what I have observed, I have been watching him since he was in the next GEN finals last year
Same!! I'm eagerly awaiting a favourable GS draw for him so he can go deep.
When you think of good doubles players the names always pop up in my head and I think everyone knows consistently great doubles players but what about singles players who are the best there? And are they YouTubers ?
abr, empo and either soulwind or mcmeghan. none of them are youtubers, sadly, but #5 (bkc) is. you should look him up
We all know it's Michaelderbeste
He's very good but he's definitely not top 3 all-time, unless you only consider Random Battles.
Fun fact he also got top 4 in vgc worlds in 2023 and 2024
tbf, top randbats players really prove that they know how to play competitively, considering they can work with pokémon they didnt build and can miraculously turn disadvantages into advantages — it's not like theyre rolling perfect teams every time, but they do know how to analyze the situation quickly and effectively
Well I'm a top 3 single (been single for 21 years) and I'm a showdown player so maybe me?
What format do you play ?
Has he ever been one of the top ranking players in any format ?
Pretty sure he was up there in DPP OU
He's getting top cuts for smogon singles tours now too
CTC at #15? Blunder and Pokeaim’s amigo? Ain’t no way!
Wym don't slander my glorious king, its 100% joey. My draft king GOAT
I used to follow the USMNT religiously, but since my wife and I had some life changes over the last couple years, I haven't had time for this hobby. I stopped paying close attention around the time the US didn't qualify for the last World Cup. So... what's changed in the post couple years? It seems there's a lot of new young players doing great in Europe.
What would the USA's best roster look like right now?
Nobody has scored more than Matthew Hoppe in the last two weeks, therefore he is the GOAT.
In all seriousness: Pulisic, Reyna, McKennie, Dest, Adams, Steffen seems to be the new young core. Plenty of other talented/promising pieces as well, but there’s no “best roster” without these guys on the pitch.
With John Brooks being our veteran who will play any game he is healthy at CB
Check my post history, a couple days ago i had help with a lot of guys in this sub to make a tier list. That will tell you everything you need to know. Maybe Walker Zimmerman (RCB) and more goalkeepers should have been added but they all would’ve been C Tier.
Graham Zusi, Mix Diskerud, and Brek Shea are the current stars of the team
And Beasley
someone made a list earlier this week, this should be instructive
The US haven't had this much attacking talent in Europe since 1945.
This is what I was looking for. Thank you!
2026 is going to be fun.
*2021
I think you mean 22 and of course... but the youngsters won’t be in their prime and it won’t be on US soil. That’s when it will really be fun.
And obviously michael bradley is still our best midfielder by a long shot
top tennis players in us
