Outdoor and Nature Activities
Exploring the outdoors can offer unique date experiences. The Lefrak Center in Prospect Park offers kayak rentals for a fun and reasonably priced outing [1:1]. Walking across the Henry Hudson Bridge and up to the Cloisters via Inwood Hill and Fort Tryon Parks is a favorite walk that combines nature with historical sites
[4:2]. Another suggestion is to visit the newly opened Hallet Sanctuary near the Central Park Zoo
[4:5].
Cultural and Artistic Experiences
New York City is rich in cultural and artistic venues. Consider visiting the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, which features interactive exhibits and a Jim Henson exhibit [2:1]. The Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, and Museum of Arts and Design are also great options for art lovers
[2:1]
[2:3]. For those interested in live performances, smaller theater shows, opera, and magic shows like Urban Illusions in the East Village can provide memorable experiences
[1:2]
[1:3].
Unique and Offbeat Activities
For something truly unique, consider attending events hosted by the Amateur Astronomers Association, which offers free telescope observations [1:7]. Participating in a zombie crawl or visiting a cat cafe can provide quirky and memorable experiences
[3:3]
[3:6]. Additionally, taking boats to different locations such as Red Hook for seafood and mini-golf at Brooklyn Crab adds a fun twist to traditional dates
[3:2].
Day Trips and Scenic Adventures
Take advantage of scenic day trips outside of Manhattan. DIA Beacon is accessible via train from Grand Central and offers a day filled with art exploration [4:4]. Storm King Art Center provides a beautiful drive and an opportunity to explore large-scale sculptures in a natural setting
[4:10]. These excursions offer a break from the city hustle and a chance to enjoy the surrounding beauty.
Interactive and Educational Experiences
Interactive and educational activities can be both enjoyable and enlightening. The Museum of Mathematics in Flatiron offers engaging exhibits for math enthusiasts [5:1]. Alternatively, gallery hopping in Chelsea between 19th and 26th streets allows you to explore contemporary art without spending money on entry fees
[5:4]. These experiences can spark interesting conversations and shared learning moments.
These diverse options cater to various interests and offer unique ways to experience New York City beyond the typical tourist attractions.
Hey everyone!
I was wondering if knows of unique/unheard of date ideas and locations to do in the city. I feel like I've done everything there is to do in the city (visiting the piers like Pier 25 minigolf, visiting museums, going through central park, doing all the touristy things, etc).
I know of some unique places like puttery (indoor minigolf in general) but they all require you to be 21+ which I am not. I've been to spyscape, comedy shows, broadway plays, shipwrecked, color factory, ice cream musuem etc. Are there any other ideas anyone has that are similar to these? Essentially I'm looking for more indoor activities that aren't just eating and walking around but would be good for a date! And if possible, on the less pricy side please! (Like max 50 dollars per person but under would be better for a broke college student).
Thank you all so much!
Edit: Sorry if I didn’t clarify, but these are activities I’m asking for a significant other!
Roller Skating, art cafe at Happy Medium, escape rooms, libraries, opera, off Broadway/smaller theater shows, art shows (lots of events on partiful & Instagram), governors island, roosevelt island, park events, etc.
Go to a magic show! My personal recommendation is Urban Illusions in the East Village.
First dates, or date nights with a significant other? Big difference
Sorry I didn’t specify, but a significant other! Almost 2.5 years actually :)
Check out some of the cultural centers and their free events.
Some of their events include free food and drinks.
NYC has so much cultural stuff and yet most people don't take advantage of them.
AAA.com or amateur astronomers association!
They do free observations, with provided telescopes. I’m taking my sweetheart out and we’re considering getting a membership for more direct outings !
Tons of talks, live podcasts and lectures to check out - look at event programming at NYPL, 92Y, and museums. Often free. Eventbrite will also feature these.
The Lefrak center in prospect park had kayaks you can rent to go out into the lake, it’s fun and pretty reasonably priced, iirc.
Brooklyn cat cafe is a fun date, too!
Hey all, my bf and I (both 20yo) love going to interesting museums like MET Cloisters, Intrepid museum, etc. Looking for some fun exciting date afternoon ideas of cool spots in or around nyc. If there is history, activities, or animals involved we are down- i’d love to hear suggestions. I appreciate it!
Do you have a NY library card? If so, go into culture pass and check out all the places you can get free tickets to (not that you were asking for free stuff, simply a bonus).
No, dyk do you have to be a ny resident to get one? Were from NJ. Ty this is such a good tip though!
You do need to be a resident, yes.
For animal lovers, the Central Park Zoo is a nice option with a more intimate scale.
If weather is challenging, go out to Brooklyn and visit the Cat Cafe: https://catcafebk.com
Some other museums include the Museum of Arts and Design on Columbus Cir which is adjacent to the park and there is a Xmas market across the circle as well as The Shops at Columbus Cir.
NY Historical Society on the Upper West Side and The Museum of the City of NY on the Upper East Side are both very informative. El Museo del Barrio is closed to the City of NY Museum.
Use search bar or the guides.
You can find them in the side bar for new and old Reddit.
They’re in the community resources on mobile.
Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria is great - the Jim Henson exhibit alone is worth the trip (do Muppets count as animals?), and there are a lot of neat interactive stations that would make for a fun date.
The Brooklyn Museum is usually interestingly curated, and it's right next to both Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, so you can make a whole day of it in nice weather.
In further deep cuts, the Queens Museum usually has offbeat art exhibits, and the room-size Panorama model of NYC is surprisingly cool to look at. Pair that with getting Dim Sum in Flushing.
I've only ever been there for a wedding so I can't speak to the normal visitor experience, but the Queens Farm Museum might also fit the bill if you're looking for animal-related places.
Let’s hear it - what activity did you do, where did you go or what made it stand out?
Taking boats anywhere. I started dating my partner in the late spring and so many of our early dates revolves around boats it became a running joke. Great memories of taking the ferry to Red Hook and eating seafood and playing pool and mini golf at Brooklyn Crab.
Oh, and much longer ago, but joined a guy for a zombie crawl complete with people on hand to give us zombie makeup (I think we were participating in a movie shoot of some kind?) followed by ending up at a bar where there was mud wrestling. The guy was a dud but the date was definitely unique.
I went on a blind date for a NYC magazine. The match was made by the magazine - all I got was the person’s first name and where to show up. That’s it. Not even a photo. Dinner was comped. In exchange, I had to do an interview and photoshoot after.
Huh. I always wondered how one would sign up. What happened afterwords?
At the bottom of the article and on the webpage, I think they have instructions for how to sign up. You basically send in a short bio, and then wait for the magic to happen.
What happened after? Married with a baby on the way! Just kidding. We were really into each other during the date, planned for date 2, and then… things just fizzled out. Never spoke again. It was sort of a perfect NYC experience.
Was it that Time Out NY column 'undatable' or something like that?
Those were kind of fun to read.
Yup! That’s the one. We’re real people!
She wanted to meet at this cafe but it was down in brooklyn (matched with her on an app). When I get to the cafe, there's like a front porch-like space that was fully screened in and a clipboard with all these rules like "no unwanted hugging or touching" and a sign-up sheet. Whatever so I order a double espresso and the woman at the counter says I'll have to wait till we start our session inside (wtf.) It apparently wasnt a normal cafe, but a cat cafe. There was a little girls birthday party so all the cats were being chased by little kids. This girl kept talking about how she has two cats and her landlord won't let her have more. I notice her earrings and they are cat earrings. Her sweater is a cat sweater. Her socks are cat socks.
I think I spent like $80+ on cat time, but at least I got out of there.
This is one of the funniest and most relatable posts i've read on reddit
heaven
They said UNIQUE.
Went mini golfing on the Hudson. Headed to a bar in Tribeca afterwards where we saw John lithgow eating a hot fudge sundae. It was the most fun date I’ve ever had and mini golfing is a great first date activity
I’m an international college student in the Bronx who has lived in the city for a year now, but I’ve started dating a girl from New York a few months ago and I’m struggling to come up with good dates. She has lived in New York her whole life and she already knows all the well known stuff as well as a lot of the lesser known stuff.
Because of this I was hoping you guys could tell me if you know of any hidden, secret, underground, unknown date ideas. Anything that you wouldn’t find on a Buzzfeed list of “10 cute date ideas in New York City” is good.
Also we’re both under 21, so keep that in mind.
Thank you!
go to the cloisters or the conservatory garden in Central Park (entrance on 105th and Madison)
Since you're coming from the Bronx, if it's possible walk the Henry Hudson Bridge and then up to the Cloisters via Inwood Hill and Fort Tryon Parks. One of my favorite walks in the city.
Cloisters is a pretty good idea, it's not unknown but most people don't go there that often or at all.
Or that new section of Central Park that was recently opened near the zoo. Hallet Sanctuary, I think?
Madison?
I think you mean 5th.
you’re right, I was thinking 5th and typed Madison. cheers!
DIA is a ~90 min Train ride from grand central. No need for a car. Highly recommend a day trip out to Beacon.
Cars are more fun though, it’s a beautiful scenic drive up there
You can't impress a New Yorker
Maybe hit up fiddlesticks if you go to storm king OP
if you go to beacon there’s lots of nice little shops to check out on main st after you’re finished at the museum
OP prolly too young to afford it but I did it with train + uber. just waited a bit longer for the car to come
BDSM Dungeon
Hi all! I've been seeing this girl for a bit, and we go on dates near where we are from on Long Island mostly and hang out at home. Now that the weather is getting better and we're getting more free time on the weekends, I wanted to take her out to the city for the first time. I go pretty often because some of my friends moved there after college and I've gotten more familiar over the years of living here. However, she doesn't go a lot nor is she 21 so it wouldn't make sense to go there for the bar scene either. So getting back to my initial question - what would be a fun thing to do? Preferably I'd have some event/thing I could invite her to instead of just asking "wanna go to the city someday," because she definitely prefers more concrete plans.
She likes good food, museums but not too stuffy (a stem girl to her core), indie, folk, and some country music. We've watched some shows and movies together, and she prefers horror/thriller over rom-com. Maybe something casual like a farmers market too? I am definitely a gift giver but I don't want to overstep boundaries-wise because were not in an official relationship, so something like that would provide me with a good way to get her something. She's competitive to her core and likes sports and nature. And adores dogs.
To be honest I am head over heels for this girl, and I want to show her the best version of this city that I love so much, on a more familiar level rather than the touristy stuff that we've all done. Maybe some hidden gems? For fridays, evening things would be preferred and for the weekend the afternoon would probably work best, but not firmly set.
Anyway - are there any events/things going on that you guys can recommend that fit into this picture? Hope I'm in the right place, thank you!
The high line
you could get a citibike and ride around central park.
Walk around Chelsea between 19th and 26th and visit the galleries there. Start at zwirner, Hauser and wirth, gagosian, whatever. Just pick one and you can gallery hop for a couple of hours. Then get some lomo saltado at coppelia. Great vibes and the galleries are all free so you can save your money for food.
Maybe check out the Museum of Mathematics in Flatiron?
Hi guys, I want to take my boyfriend on a date tomorrow night, he’s been stressed out from work so I want to surprise him. What are some unique places I could take him to that you wouldn’t normally find online? (Restaurants and an activity??) Places that you guys have gone to and loved. Let me know and thank you!!
Chamber Magic at the Lotte hotel. Its an excellent show with a small group of people. Formal wear is required. https://chambermagic.com/
It’s 2022 and nyc. If anyone has ever been there it’s online lol.
OP: Pikachu face
Whiskey bar, then a sex club. You asked and its certainly unique
I wish someone had told me that when my BF said he was stressed out from work, he was NOT stressed out from work. Other than that I can’t be of much help
I recommend taking a look at some of the many date idea threads already asked of, and answered by, this subreddit including the very popular Running out of date ideas from 14 days ago.
i have a guy visiting the city in a few weeks and i need ideas of cool/fun/interesting places to take him. this will be his third time in the city, but from what he’s told me he hasn’t seen much of it (has only been around midtown) he’ll be in town the 21st of this month. i was hoping to take him to some cooler “underground“ spots (i know how annoying that sentence is) he’s not into theater or jazz if this helps.
names of speakeasys, cool restaurant/bars, events, romantic spots, literally anything would be helpful really (preferably brooklyn and/or manhattan) we’ll be with each other the whole day so i need stuff to fill the time. i was already planning on taking him to walk around st. mark’s place and maybe to The Box, but i’ve got nothing other than that.
thanks in advance
The Ride is really fun---it's a quick light funny bus tour--can be combined with other things in the area (Broadway etc).

18th Room, Shalel Kitchen, Sugar Monk, Garfunkel’s, XIV, Velvet Brooklyn
Thanks for actually giving some unique suggestions as opposed to the same bullshit this sub gives over and over again. OMG SLEEP NO MORE
Sunshine Laundromat in Greenpoint is a functioning laundromat with a hidden door at the back disguised as stacked washers that leads to a pinball bar.
He might enjoy Chumley's--a former speakeasy and writers hangout in the West Village.
>Chumley's
Why did this get downvoted? It's a nice place, just what OP asked for.
My comments often get immediate downvotes. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with content most often. Kind of you to notice!
Just moved to New York! My boyfriend's visiting in a few weeks so I'm planning to show him around. It's also just in time for our anniversary so looking for romantic things to do in the city! Dinner, museums, fun activities, anything like that really!
What part of NY? There are no shortage of options. Are you working with a budget - if so provide it with real numbers as this will avoid some one recommending either Punjabi Deli (which is tasty) vs Daniel (which i$ ta$ty).
A couple easy ones
All great ideas here I especially luv Governor’s Island and or a picnic in Central Park in Sheep’s meadow A rooftop bar to watch the sunset, a circle line cruise around the island of Manhattan you can catch on the Hudson River and 42nd St Walk from the top of CP at 110th st to the sanctuary off of Fifth Ave near 100th st is so peaceful and beautiful a great romantic spot too Top of the Rock in Rockefeller center for great views Stroll around the West Village Have fun 🤩
Sunset walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, picnic in Central Park, and maybe dinner at a rooftop spot, can’t go wrong with that vibe!
A rooftop spot sounds like a great idea! Do you have any reco?
Welcome to NYC! 🗽 A sunset stroll on the Brooklyn Bridge, rooftop drinks in Midtown, and a cozy dinner in the West Village would be perfect. Happy early anniversary! 💕
Hang out on your roof at night
awwww you go girl! anywhere will be romantic as long as you two are together 🥰
Taking a girl (23) who I’ve been friends with for a while on our first date to NYC. Trying to make it really special but I’m not super familiar with the spots around the city. Was thinking Modern Art museum, dinner, and Rockefeller/Bryant Park since we’re both into the art stuff. Trying to keep it walking distance from Grand Central. Any recommendations on places/activities that could really blow her away?
Also want to prepare indoor stuff if it’s extra cold/bad weather that day. Was thinking maybe heading over to the Edge if that’s the case
That sounds like an amazing first date! 🎨💫 If you’re both into art, the MoMA is a solid choice, and for dinner, I’d recommend Gabriel Kreuther (Michelin-starred, artsy vibe) or L’Adresse (cozy but stylish).
For something unique & interactive, you could take a hands-on cooking class together at Selfup in FiDi—it’s fun, romantic, and lets you bond over making amazing food. 🍝🔥 Plus, it’s perfect if the weather turns bad!
Other cool indoor spots near Grand Central:
✨ Summit One Vanderbilt – insane skyline views with mirrored floors
🖼️ Fotografiska Museum – artsy, moody photography exhibits
🍸 Raines Law Room – hidden speakeasy for a classy nightcap
Hope that helps! Whatever you do, she’s gonna love the effort you’re putting in. 💕
30% off Bathhouse Williamsburg or Flatiron! New rooftop pool at Williamsburg location! Saunas, Cold Plunge, Hot Tubs! So much fun!
Murray's Cheese in Grand Central Market, you can try samples of cheese. If you're getting her something, get a small thing of havarti (the one with dill) and combine that with apple butter.
7/10/2019
there is a textiles show in the nypl that would be nice, then you could go to bryant park or up in one vanderbilt observation deck without straying too far. also for dinner near grand central is sakagura, a cool japanese izakaya in the basement of an office building that is fun and i think romantic to find. its a common kind of thing in japan, but unusual here and its very good.
Hey everyone, I'm looking for suggestions for fun interactive date night ideas. I know that there are several interactive museums in Manhattan, but I was hoping to find some cool activities in the Westchester area.
Here's this post from 3 months ago asking the same question, easily found by using the sub's search feature using keywords "Date Night".
Although, there are a myriad of previous posts similar or exactly identical to this one that will have the information you are looking for.
Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville is fun if you’re looking for something active. Plenty of restaurants/bars to swing by after.
Kanopi Restaurant in White Plains is doing a HARINGS! pop-up/collaboration with Trimper Gallery, featuring art by Keith Haring. You can make reservations now through August 29. Sounds like a great date night spot! This Restaurant Showcases Iconic Keith Haring Art in White Plains
They show old movies at Bannerman Castle. You get the ferry to the island at the Beacon train station. I highly recommend booking in advance. The boat can only hold 44 people.
That sounds amazing
https://www.hrm.org/ - Hudson River Museum in Yonkers is a wonderful place to visit. I know its not the evening as you asked for but, it's an option for an afternoon date! Planetarium shows are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 12:30, 2, and 3:30pm
