Choosing eco-friendly toilet paper is an important step in reducing your environmental impact. Here are some of the best brands recommended by users, along with their features and considerations.
Reel Bamboo Toilet Paper
Reel is a popular choice for those seeking eco-friendly options. It is made from bamboo, which is a rapidly renewable resource. Users appreciate that it comes in recyclable cardboard boxes and individual paper wraps, avoiding plastic packaging [1:1]
[1:5]. While not as plush as some mainstream brands, it is considered strong and functional
[2:2].
Who Gives A Crap
This brand offers both bamboo and 100% recycled toilet paper options. The recycled version is praised for its strength [1:4], while the bamboo option is noted for being environmentally friendly
[1:7]. However, some users find it less plush compared to premium brands like Charmin
[2:8].
Caboo
Caboo is another bamboo-based toilet paper that receives positive feedback for its softness and sustainability. It ships in cardboard and is paper-wrapped, making it a good low-waste option [2:3][[2:7]](#sr-2-c-7].
Unbleached and Recycled Options
Some users prefer unbleached or recycled toilet papers due to the absence of harmful chemicals used in bleaching processes. These products are often softer than bleached alternatives and are available in many grocery stores [3:2]
[3:4]. Brands like "Danke" offer recycled options that are functional and less wasteful
[3:3].
Considerations on Bamboo and Environmental Impact
While bamboo is generally considered sustainable due to its fast growth, there are concerns about the environmental practices of some bamboo producers [5:8]. It's important to look for certifications and consider the entire production process when evaluating the sustainability of bamboo products
[5:2].
In summary, choosing eco-friendly toilet paper involves considering factors such as material (bamboo vs. recycled), packaging (plastic-free), and production practices. Brands like Reel, Who Gives A Crap, and Caboo are highly recommended by users for their balance of sustainability and functionality.
I'd like to use a more environmentally-friendly toilet paper, but it needs to be strong enough to not fall apart when it's wet. We've cut down on toilet paper use generally with a bidet, but Seventh Generation shreds when wet and leaves little bits behind. Any recommendations?
My compromise with the bidet has been to buy the expensive fluffy Charmin paper. I used cheap simply toilet paper for years and it really doesn’t do the trick for drying off.
A more environmentally sensitive option would probably be to move to family cloth/rags, which is less gross than it sounds when you’re using a bidet. But I still haven’t been able to get over the ick factor. I know it’s not much different than drying off with a towel after a shower. But with a shower, I do the full soap and scrub, which just doesn’t happen with the bidet.
Yeah Charmin Ultra Strong is the best I've tried...I wish they'd come up with a way to make it with recycled paper.
Charmin uses bleach to whiten its TP. Bleach is bad enough, but to me, using it for one-time use as bumwipe is extra unfortunate. Give bamboo TP a try - it's very strong and absorbent.
Who gives a crap bamboo paper is great. Not zero waste however
Who Gives A Crap also has 100% recycled tp. That’s what we use. It’s strong as hell
I'm in Australia and apparently it's made in China - the shipping negates benefit for me, just something I'm adding in to the discussion to consider :)
We use Reel Bamboo Toilet Paper
Seconding Reel, that's what I use. It's strong stuff and not too linty. I like that it comes in a cardboard box that can be recycled instead of the normal plastic wrap most toilet paper comes in. The rolls are individually wrapped in paper as well. Maybe not truly zero waste, but it's definitely much better than most toilet paper packaging.
Somebody repurposed towels into drying cloths with the bidet. Brb to get linkrecent post on r/zerowaste a few posts below yours
Along the same lines, I use cut up tshirt squares for this purpose! Works great and it’s easy (free) to have a big pile of them.
This. It's the best.
Yeah if you're with a bidet and not using much, just splurge and get what works. And you can dry off with towels if you're confident that the situation is handled and you're only drying water. I don't personally have such skill with the bidet to trust that, my friend who does that has the water pressure that'll blast their hair off your butt.
Who gives a Crap is pretty strong and all, it's just too expensive for me these days
Everyone else in my house will only tolerate the very plush, premium, top of the line, nicest type of Charmin toilet paper. If the nicest Charmin is a 10, Who Gives A Crap--the virgin bamboo option--is maybe, maybe a 3 to them at best.
I know I'm not going to get a 10 here, but are there any low/zero waste brand you can recommend that will get me to a 7 or 8? I will even take brands that come in plastic packaging but might otherwise be sustainable (see next sentence).
I have the NRDC most environmentally friendly list and yes, I could just go down the list and try them all, but I started doing that and it's mostly been a frustrating trial and error process. I was hoping folks had some other brands they could share.
And even if we get a bidet, we still need TP - we will not be using reusable cloths to wipe, period.
Reel bamboo toilet paper is good. It's not as posh as Charmin, but it's a lot better than any of the other bamboo and recycled toilet papers we're tried. It comes in cardboard boxes (which make excellent storage boxes for up to 17 pint-size canning jars) without any plastic packaging.
Caboo is nice, 100% bamboo, ships in cardboard and is paper wrapped!
Whole foods has small packs if you want to try before you buy a bunch, but definitely better price if ordered direct from Caboo if you like it....Actually looks like Costco online has the best price on Caboo currently!
Seconding Caboo
I went from Charmin to other brands desperately trying to find ones that were softer and have been using Caboo for years now
Charmin is gross. IDK how people can wipe with that stuff. 🤣 Good luck! Hopefully you find something satisfactory for your family’s tushies.
I also find the powdery texture of Charmin very off-putting! I would almost rather get pee on my hands. I thought that was just me!
it's like using tissue paper, i hate that stuff! and when you tear it off the roll, all these fibers become airborne.
I stack Scott to make my own 3-ply which is even better than the mushy Charmin.
I’m sure it’s not good enough for your fancy-bottom family (just a little gentle teasing). But FYI, WGAC recently changed up their regular (not bamboo). It’s a bit thicker/nicer than it was.
Haha, I don't care what toilet paper I use, it's everyone else who complains. :P Unfortunately I bought the WGAC regular a month ago, so the 3 rating I gave was for that one. I think it's fine. I wouldn't call it soft or plush, but it does the job.

So... the majority of the Store brands labeled "compare to AS or QN or the Bears" means they are very close to those name brands in lab testing - thickness, strength, softness, liquid absorption, sheet size, etc. Different raw pulp (new vs recycled) paper, embossing pattern, and packaging are the main differences aside from the obvious name brand marketing and subsequent higher cost. Some companies fluff up the finished product diameter without increasing the sheet count. The name brands might run slightly more consistent "quality" but any production line can run a couple shifts before an issue is noticed and corrected. Of course this info is for educational purposes and is in no way meant to influence any consumers' final decision at the store. Everyone likes a certain type of feel when they use their paper, but you can try them out. Hopefully it helps.
I'm with you 100%.
We do have a bidet. Highly recommend. It's not just about using less TP, but it just feels so much cleaner! I was worried because ours is just tap water cold. But even in winter, that's no problem at all.
I usually buy Reel and really like it. Fortunately for me my husband will wipe his ass with whatever I buy 🤷♀️.
With the issues of climate change and environmental pollution in our world today, I am beginning to make a conscious effort to contribute my quota in protecting the environment.
I am doing this by deciding to use unbleached toilet paper. Unbleached toilet papers skip the bleaching process that turns it white. Chemicals are used in the process of bleaching, which results in the release of harmful substances into the environment.
I know my decision might have little or no significant impact on the environment. But toilet paper is something we use every day, and making this decision will definitely have an amazing compound effect. I have sourced a month’s supply of unbleached toilet paper from online marketplaces like Alibaba or Amazon.
I know these toilet papers maintain a natural colour, which is brown because they don’t pass through the bleaching process. Additionally, due to the non-bleaching, it’s safer for the environment. It is safer for the body as well by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.
Do these make unbleached toilet paper safer than other similar products, such as the bamboo toilet paper? I have also heard of recycled toilet paper, and I don’t know how that works.
However, I am trying to consider and compare their mode of processing to understand their amount of impact on the environment. Please, if you have any insight, kindly share.
I use TP that is unbleached and made from 100% recycled paper pulp, or sometimes a bamboo-based brand. It's perfectly functional and not necessarily brown or gray. Depends on what pulp is used.
Bleach is a poison. It should be kept out of the water table and only used when needed. I can't think of a lower priority in the world than using bleach to make TP more aesthetically pleasing.
So go for it! Let's make these products the standard. And I'd just add that if you can find a local retailer, it's always a good idea not to contribute to the Amazon economy if you can avoid it.
I realized the rawness I was experiencing (eg when having a cold and wiping nose often) wasn't from the wiping, it was the bleach. I use one ply bleach free and its so soft, unlike standard 1 ply
Disclaimer though I'm allergic to bleach (now) along with many other things
Long ago used to work for a global cancer charity - at the time there were consistent reports/ studies about bleached tp causing rectal cancer
It doesn't cost me much more buying bleach free. I don't go all out on organic cotton or whatnot, though
Seconding the statement to AVOID Amazon if you care about our environment
I use recycled toilet paper(specifically "Danke" brand, haven't found another option that isn't too thin), it's a sort of greige color, not really brown. The other brands are technically also usable, but the multilayered paper I'm using seems ultimately less wasteful because I don't need to manually triple-layer.
I would like using a bidet, but I don't have the space for a separate one and don't know of a combined version that isn't plastic XD
There is no major difference that I've noticed except the brands of recycled TP I get are softer than bleached TP and don't poison your privates. Just don't buy anything from Amazon. Most grocery stores carry recycled unbleached TP. You just have to look between the name brands cause they normally have smaller displays than the bigger brands. If not I believe Grove Co. Also sells TP.
Different approach, but you could consider a bidet! I personally don’t really like them, but they would be the best way to go. I use the brand Who Gives A Crap bamboo toilet paper if you want brand input :)
Second the bidet! I tried using one when I traveled abroad, and honestly, it was a game changer for cleanliness and definitely seemed way more eco-friendly. I installed one in my toilet so very happy with it so far.
I have a bidet but still use TP to dry off.
Bidets don't get everything, so you're still going to need at least one or two wipes if you poop. Plus, you're wet unless you have a bidet with a drying feature.
>Bidets don't get everything
And how much tp does one need to get everything after Taco Bell night?
Jesus bamboo and unbleached toilet paper is so expensive. I'm so glad I learned how to make toilet paper during quarantine. Bamboo paper takes several extra wasteful steps to make and uses harsher chemicals than just bleach like sodium hydroxide and lye. You also need use more water to make bamboo paper.
If you know how viscose is made, that's pretty much what bamboo toilet paper is. Chemically broken down bamboo.
If you have a bidet, try making your own toilet paper sheets. If you grow okra, then you can turn any woody plant material into paper, even grass and corncobs. The slime from okra is a natural binder (potato skins work too in a pinch). Just blend all that food waste with paper from the shredder bin and you got good paper slurry. If you make seed milk, that leftover pulp can be tossed into your paper making slurry and you'll have toilet paper qualities.
Hey all. I find buying high qualoty toilet paper and using less to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. What are some of the best brand you reccomend based off of best value? How about best tp, period?
I love Costco brand toilet paper. Great quality and great price.
I 2nd that. Kirkland brand ain't no joke when you're ready to get serious about your tp.
Cottonelle Ultra. It’s nice and thick and doesn’t leave that nasty toilet paper lint like the cheapo shit does.
When you have a septic tank as I do (the joys of living rural) it's Scott or Marcall 1000.
For a sparkly anus and fresh feeling, I suggest investing 30 or 40 bucks in a bidet attachment for your toilet. It takes 5 minutes to install and I have cut my toilet paper consumption in half. Also, quality doesn't matter for the paper since all I am doing with it is blotting dry. I recommend.
I'm surprised no one has suggested a bidet yet. Quite awhile ago a redditt post asked what was the best use of Amazon gift cards, and as I recall the top comments were electric kettle, bidet, and ODI scanner. A bidet kit from an online retailer will add one to your toilet for a small cost, and save lots of toilet paper (just drying yourself, actually).
40 dollar bidet attachment was a game changer for me.
Save a ton on toilet paper.
Im curious why a 100% bamboo product is not more than just a B rating? Seems to be better environmentally since we use a lot less trees and switch to a product that grows quickly and easily harvestable. Also why no hemp products on this list?
I was always under the impression that converting bamboo from hard to soft products caused environmental harm. I don’t have the brain to google if that is the case or still the case.
Textiles Since the fibers of bamboo are very short (less than 3 mm or 1⁄8 in), they are not usually transformed into yarn by a natural process. The usual process by which textiles labeled as being made of bamboo are produced uses only rayon made from the fibers with heavy employment of chemicals. To accomplish this, the fibers are broken down with chemicals and extruded through mechanical spinnerets; the chemicals include lye, carbon disulfide, and strong acids. Retailers have sold both end products as "bamboo fabric" to cash in on bamboo's current ecofriendly cachet. The Canadian Competition Bureau and the US Federal Trade Commission, as of mid-2009, are cracking down on the practice of labeling bamboo rayon as natural bamboo fabric. Under the guidelines of both agencies, these products must be labeled as rayon with the optional qualifier "from bamboo". Wikipedia
Bamboo doesn’t biodegrade as fast as other toilet papers
I purchased some bamboo TP once. It was by far the worst I've ever used.
Lots of bamboo is grown in countries where there are limited protections for primary forests. The widely recognised sustainable forest certifications (FSC, PEFC) have been shown to be certifying bamboo growers with very, very poor environmental practices. It’s a very unclear picture.
Toilet paper is not green. Use a bidet and stop killing trees.
If paper products aren’t sustainable then nothing is lmao
We have bidets on every toilet but one still needs to wipe a little.
I'm always baffled by the people who insist that they only need the bidet and zero issue. I have a bidet and I've never NOT needed a little bit of TP after the fact. I can only assume these other people are either a) walking around with dirty buttholes or b) have a diet that consists of only bone broth or 100% fiber.
wipe with your hand after/during bidet then wash your hands like a man
Bamboo is sustainable
Water might be the least sustainable item on earth
Use leaves from trees like real men. Or the bark from trees for that extra clean feel.
In a move blending innovation with alleged treason, Donald Trump has announced the launch of Top Secret Soft™, a luxury toilet paper line crafted from the classified documents he famously stored in his Mar-a-Lago bathroom.
"It’s the softest paper you’ll ever use—presidentially endorsed and confidentially smooth," Trump declared at the product unveiling. Marketed as “Patriot-grade wiping,” each roll features redacted text and a golden Trump logo.
While the former president touts the line as “recycling at its finest,” critics argue that shredding classified material into 2-ply is a new low. Trump insists, “Nobody knows sensitive materials better than me, and now you can use them better than anyone!”
Now this is an ONIONHEADLINE & writeup
I had never thought of toilet paper being bad for our health, only bad for our planet. But then an ad popped up for one of those bamboo TP brands with a whole lot of claims about PFAs, etc. Is this real? Should I make a swap? Any suggestions?I can't really go for family cloth though, just a bridge too far for me. We cloth diaper and I can't imagine spraying poop off anything more.
Your thoughts on the health impacts of toilet paper are really interesting and it's great you're questioning these products for your family's well-being and the planet too. I'm guessing the best answer here is use a bidet, there's less PFAS in the water maybe.
If yuo're going to comit to PFAS free TP, there are some different brands of PFAS free toilet paper here, makes it easy to find and compare a few.
I never gave too much thought about PFAS in toilet paper. I guess it’s such a short amount of time that it comes in contact with my butt that if it was present, I’m not going to try and stress about it.
But, we use Who Gives A Crap toilet paper subscription service because I like their environmental impact (100% recycled and sustainable materials) and also their community service (provides sanitation services like toilets to developing countries).
Never heard of this but I’d love to give them a try. I’ve been using the bamboo TP from Grove Co for a few years but my friends always complain that it’s rough lol. I don’t really care or notice but they def make fun of me for it. Is it any softer? Or similar to the bamboo
The grove bamboo tp is my favorite! I don’t get why tp needs to be soft. I care that it’s absorbent, effective, lint free
We have used both their regular TP and bamboo TP… it’s not particularly soft 😂. We joke that it helps clean your butt better. I’m probably going to “splurge” on a roll of soft toilet paper after I give birth in a few months but otherwise I personally never understood the obsession with cottony soft tp. 😅
I switched to Caboo, they say they’re PFA and BPA free. Idk if it’s greenwashing or not, but figured it could hurt to make the switch. I do kind of miss how soft regular toilet paper is, but it’s not a big deal.
Yea TP softness isn’t something I ever notice either but I had said in a previous reply my friends all poke fun at me for it lol.
I’d rather have slightly less soft TP than forever chemicals in my asshole LOL.
I got into it and then spiraled because I’m tired of having to find healthy alternatives and paying so much money. So I just bought a bidet. And I use much less tp sooooo in my eyes less is better and i save money so it’s a win.
That seems like an excellent middle ground. We use cloth reusable paper towels in our kitchen but family cloth is a bridge too far for us too. We've been looking into bidets but we're on a well so we need to figure out not having freezing cold ice water be what comes out the first couple minutes haha.
The nicer ones will heat the water from the tank before dispensing!
I went down that rabbit hole not long ago and yes so pricey.
Really debated on getting one. I’m going to talk my husband into it!
Just ran out of both and it seems that quality has gone down again since end of last year (stocked up before that). The brands I purchased no longer seem to be good. Whatever I look a seems to have complaints.
Used to get bounty paper towels, it seems like the quality has gone down and the prices have gone up. I used them in produce containers to keep veggies and salad dry so they last longer, and sometimes for cleaning up the grosser messes. Mostly use rags though.
I used to get kirkland TP when I had a costco membership. I switched to another brand from a local drugstore, which I stopped using after getting utis out of the blue and had trouble getting rid of them till i switched. Later I got Target Up & UP and that was ok for a bit, till the last batch, which has been pretty rough.
We live in a rental that has a tankless toilet, doesn't seem like anything will work with it. I heard that travel bidets aren't that great either, but I will try one and see if I can at least reduce toilet paper.
Tp- cottonelle or charmin - both last us longer (we use less) than cheaper brands - but scotts does better if you have old plumbing
Paper towels- Viva (only the soft ones that are “select a size” style - they last me a long time…I can only find them in the large packs and one large pack will last our family 6months)- so about a roll/month.
Charmin and Costco are a nightmare on old plumbing in my experience, though I do agree they last longer.
Scots, while good for plumbing, is the worst thing I’ve ever bought.
Angel soft is a good balance for me as it doesn’t clog toilets or feel like sandpaper. Middle price point too.
Agree that Angel soft is a compromise but not a frugal one for us as we end up using way too much of it.
I subscribe to Who Gives a Crap for toilet paper - ethical, sustainable, and affordable.
Me too. I get the bamboo and it's the best I've ever used. Ask me anything!
Yes! I've tried both (the recycled paper and the bamboo) and can honestly say both are as good as the other. And they're just a great company. If people don't have the space to store all the rolls at once it's the easiest thing in the world to go halvsies with a neighbor, friend, or family member.
I do the same. If we are still full on to when the next box comes in, I gift it to my in laws or friends. Honestly the rolls last forever.
And a single wrapped roll makes a great gag gift.
Oh, and the wrap can work great for gift wrapping small items
That's true! They come in such fun wrappings, they're lovely.
I thought the same thing when it came to toilet paper lol but maybe OP is thinking bidet users?
I have been getting this toilet paper for years even though it's a bit pricey (a lot of toilet paper now is) because I really think bamboo tp is a lot more sustainable than wiping our asses with boreal forest trees. Honestly I just really like it for environmental and texture reasons and I want to give out five rolls to people who may have been curious about it in the past and just want to try it but haven't done so yet for one reason or another. Comment if you're interested!
I'm down to try some, I already use a bidet to cut down and would love to try this.
cool! i have used it with a bidet and its great! dm for pickup!
That’s what I use! I’ve got a bunch, just commenting to encourage others to take advantage of your generosity :)
You know!
Sick! Hell yeah I'd love to try some.
Cool! Dm me for the address for pickup!
*five rolls as in one roll each to five different people so more can try it!
I'm getting ready to move, so don't want to pick up anything unnecessary, but I think that what you are doing is great and I'm studying sustainability myself
I've read a ton about it so let me know if you have any questions
I have started going to aldis much more often as prices soar, but have mostly stuck to food. I found myself looking at paper towels and plates on my last visit and wondered how comparable they are to name brand? I can be a little picky, I usually get large packs of bounty/charmin at sams, and the sams brand paper plates. Has anyone had any experience with any of them?
I buy the Bounty copy cat one, it's green packaging and it's not bad at all. And it's so much cheaper.
I think that's the one I was looking at, one said compare to sparkle and one was compare to bounty. If it's comparable they were definitely a much better price.
We used to only buy Bounty until we switched over to that one, if it's not tolerable we'd never make the switch.
If you don't mind my asking (granted I know it's a year old post), is that by chance the brand called Boulder?
I second this. The price is great and they are good quality. Nice and thick.
I would pass on the toilet paper. I too thought I wasn’t picky but the toilet paper proved me wrong.
I discovered how picky I was about toilet paper back in 2020 when I had to buy what was available, now I make sure to never be low on the good stuff!
Is Costco Kirkland brand considered the good stuff? That’s what I use and I like.
Agree, do not get the TP. A bad time will be had by all.
Their paper plates are great for the price. I buy them exclusively and get annoyed when they are out!
The green Bounty comparable paper towel is definitely good, maybe not as good at Bounty but for the price savings it's worth it. The blue one is def not good.
The toilet paper for me is fine. I get the Angel Soft comparable, but if you like Charmin they also have a Charmin comparable that I got once that was really good. Better than I expected.
Since you’re a Charmin/Bounty buyer, P&G often has a rebate where if you buy $50, you get $15 prepaid Visa card back. I’m picky too and it’s made it a little more affordable. https://www.pggoodeveryday.com/rebates/
The Boulder paper towels are comparable to Bounty. I buy the Willow 2-ply, the big 30pk. No complaints.
