TL;DR
Scott Toilet Paper
Scott toilet paper is frequently recommended as a non-toxic option that is PFAS-free. It has been verified through multiple independent tests and is considered a safe choice for those looking to avoid harmful chemicals [3:1]. It's also affordable and easy to find at major retailers.
Reel Bamboo Toilet Paper
Reel bamboo toilet paper is another popular choice among users seeking hypoallergenic options. While it may not be as plush as some premium brands like Charmin, it is considered better than other bamboo and recycled toilet papers [4:5]. Reel comes in cardboard boxes without plastic packaging, making it a more sustainable option
[4:4].
Caboo Bamboo Toilet Paper
Caboo is praised for being soft and hypoallergenic, made from 100% bamboo. It ships in cardboard and is paper-wrapped, adding to its eco-friendly credentials [4:10]. Users have found it to be a good alternative to traditional toilet papers, especially for those with sensitivities
[4:2].
Who Gives A Crap
While Who Gives A Crap is mentioned frequently, opinions on it are mixed. Some users love their subscription service and find it convenient [3:3], while others criticize the texture and softness
[3:5],
[4:8]. It might be worth trying if you're interested in a subscription model, but be aware of the varied feedback.
Additional Recommendations
For those experiencing irritation or allergies, switching to hypoallergenic toilet paper might not be the only solution. Consider using a bidet or unscented baby wipes, which can reduce reliance on toilet paper and minimize skin contact with potential irritants [2:1],
[2:4].
The title, basically. I have such horrible itching right now and can’t figure out why. I’m switching my laundry detergent to free & clear and would like to try different toilet paper but I’m unsure what brand to get. Thanks!
I would get a handheld bidet and just use washcloths to pat dry if you’re having issues like this. You can even cut up on tshirts into small squares to use to dry. Just keep a little bin in your bathroom for them and wash after each use.
This isn’t really realistic for me though because I work 12 hour shifts at a hospital and I’m in school.. I am often not home :(
I kept switching paper brands until I realized I had my first yeast infection. Before spending too much if possible I’d get checked out just in case.
I have been to the gyno and all my tests are negative for everything including yeast, BV, STDs
Did you get checked for mycoplasma and ureaplasma? Every time I’ve had ureaplasma my only symptom is itching on my labia and the opening of my vagina.
i’ve used charmin ultra strong for pretty much my entire life, but lately it seems like they’ve changed how they make the toilet paper and it suddenly started feeling really rough and causing way more irritation than usual during flare-ups. i switched to ultra soft but it leaves a LOT of lint residue which feels so gross. what toilet paper do you guys use that’s soft AND strong?
Angel soft all the way.
When a bidet isn’t available. I just dampen folded TP and use that.
Baby WIPES! Unscented. Trust me.
Bidet
Seriously, if you can, get a bidet. We had an electrician in to install a power outlet near the toilet because the Toto Washlet we bought requires power. It’s a blessing for IBS, hemorrhoids, even yeast (our bidet has a dryer).
Hey everyone! 👋
I keep seeing posts and TikToks talking about toilet paper having bleach, formaldehyde, and other chemicals that can irritate skin or mess with your health. 😳 Is that actually true?
If so, what clean or non-toxic toilet paper brands do you all recommend? Bonus points for ones that are: • Affordable • Easy to find (Amazon, Target, Costco, etc.) • Still soft and durable
Would love to hear what you all use and trust! 🙏
I personally don't switch my toilet paper (sorry yall, just can't justify the price), but I've heard good things about HeyBamboo and WhoGivesACrap
I love my who gives a crap subscription! I think we get the nicer choice & never have to worry about running out! The price really isn’t bad when you figure out the per sheet price compared to others
WhoGivesACrap is the worst toilet paper I've ever used. I wouldn't even gift it to an enemy.
There’s bamboo and recycled. Bamboo is the correct choice. The recycled is horrid.
we use whogivesacrap! whole family loves it
just use Scott toilet paper - it's been verified PFAS free through multiple independent tests. no need to shell out for the fancy d2c brands, which probably have less oversight into their supply chain anyway.
This is the one to use. Pfas free, cheap, and good for the septic if you have one
Yes, those things are all true. You also missed PFAS. There are several options on the market (and several BS ones). Reel has been pretty good for us.
We use WhoGivesACrap when we can afford it, other stuff when we can’t. So we’re seasonably supportive 🤣😅
Do not listen to these idiots online. They are only trying to generate traffic on their account. I saw someone the other day say that drinking water was bad for you. Ugh
😅i don’t even understand the objective. do they think we’re gonna engage with their account based off of this?
Yes. And buy whatever supplement or course they're selling.
Everyone else in my house will only tolerate the very plush, premium, top of the line, nicest type of Charmin toilet paper. If the nicest Charmin is a 10, Who Gives A Crap--the virgin bamboo option--is maybe, maybe a 3 to them at best.
I know I'm not going to get a 10 here, but are there any low/zero waste brand you can recommend that will get me to a 7 or 8? I will even take brands that come in plastic packaging but might otherwise be sustainable (see next sentence).
I have the NRDC most environmentally friendly list and yes, I could just go down the list and try them all, but I started doing that and it's mostly been a frustrating trial and error process. I was hoping folks had some other brands they could share.
And even if we get a bidet, we still need TP - we will not be using reusable cloths to wipe, period.
Caboo is nice, 100% bamboo, ships in cardboard and is paper wrapped!
Whole foods has small packs if you want to try before you buy a bunch, but definitely better price if ordered direct from Caboo if you like it....Actually looks like Costco online has the best price on Caboo currently!
Seconding Caboo
I went from Charmin to other brands desperately trying to find ones that were softer and have been using Caboo for years now
Charmin is gross. IDK how people can wipe with that stuff. 🤣 Good luck! Hopefully you find something satisfactory for your family’s tushies.
I also find the powdery texture of Charmin very off-putting! I would almost rather get pee on my hands. I thought that was just me!
it's like using tissue paper, i hate that stuff! and when you tear it off the roll, all these fibers become airborne.
I stack Scott to make my own 3-ply which is even better than the mushy Charmin.
I usually buy Reel and really like it. Fortunately for me my husband will wipe his ass with whatever I buy 🤷♀️.
Reel bamboo toilet paper is good. It's not as posh as Charmin, but it's a lot better than any of the other bamboo and recycled toilet papers we're tried. It comes in cardboard boxes (which make excellent storage boxes for up to 17 pint-size canning jars) without any plastic packaging.
Came here to recommend Reel as well! My bf (who is VERY picky about his TP) actively requests it and gets disappointed if I buy anything else. It is kinda pricey but worth it imo
I’m sure it’s not good enough for your fancy-bottom family (just a little gentle teasing). But FYI, WGAC recently changed up their regular (not bamboo). It’s a bit thicker/nicer than it was.
Haha, I don't care what toilet paper I use, it's everyone else who complains. :P Unfortunately I bought the WGAC regular a month ago, so the 3 rating I gave was for that one. I think it's fine. I wouldn't call it soft or plush, but it does the job.

So... the majority of the Store brands labeled "compare to AS or QN or the Bears" means they are very close to those name brands in lab testing - thickness, strength, softness, liquid absorption, sheet size, etc. Different raw pulp (new vs recycled) paper, embossing pattern, and packaging are the main differences aside from the obvious name brand marketing and subsequent higher cost. Some companies fluff up the finished product diameter without increasing the sheet count. The name brands might run slightly more consistent "quality" but any production line can run a couple shifts before an issue is noticed and corrected. Of course this info is for educational purposes and is in no way meant to influence any consumers' final decision at the store. Everyone likes a certain type of feel when they use their paper, but you can try them out. Hopefully it helps.
🧻 Toilet paper keeps changing and crumbling and falling apart. Target’s Ultra Strong was my go to but lately it’s been terrible — so thin, and it leaves bits of lint everywhere. Would love to know what are your favorite TP brands that are actually durable and not rough?
Charmin ultra soft. (Soft but durable).
I had a bidet but the water was cold and giving me dry skin worse than TP.
No tp lint or crumbling?
Charmin Ultra Strong. Very soft and a lot less lint.
Thank you for sharing that!
Anytime!
Getting a bidet (even a portable one) was a total game-changer. Way cleaner and no more worrying about paper quality
With a bidet you still use paper to wipe and dry. I find the crumbling aspect worse with a bidet.
For all the bidet users what TP do you use?
A decent 2-ply works. It’s more like drying than wiping at that point.
When I was in uni, they had the thinnest TP imaginable, so anything better feels like a luxury now. A portable bidet in a single-person bathroom on campus was the holy grail.
I use cloth tp from a company called Marley’s monsters paired with a bidet.
+1 for the bidet.
I honestly don’t use our often, but I’ve been on a 10 day vacation and it’s made me realize how much I appreciate the option. You can get a cheap one off Amazon that’s super easy to install.
Please get a bidet for your ass' sake
Hello friends, my spouse is very low maintenance on just about everything and does not care what I buy (cleaning, toothpaste, deodorant). The big exception is toilet paper. He misses the Charmin-types. He has deeply disliked the various brands I've tried for many years now in hopes of finding a good cruelty-free option.
We do have a bidet in our main bath, but still use toilet paper. I've tried SO many brands over the last few years and they are all scratchy or thin. It'd be amazing if it was more eco-friendly, too, but main priority is soft/strong. Any recommendations??
Have tried: Who Gives a Crap, Reel, Open Nature, Grove, Seventh Generation. Caboo, NooTrees, 365.
Edit: I'm in the U.S. :) thanks in advance!
Totally get it! I still live at home (still a college student) and both my folks have auto-immune conditions that make the type of toilet paper we use very important. I want to be as sustainable as possible but it's hard to compromise on something that can cause more harm than good if it's rough and irritating. If you find a good brand, please let me know!
Cheeky Panda, bamboo stuff. I don't find it scratchy, it's reasonably soft, quite strong, and obviously highly sustainable source.
Edit - apologies, I assume you're in the US - not sure if it's available there.
Appreciate the input still even if I can't get it! I should have clarified that I am in the US!
I did check and it's available on Amazon (edit - in the US). Clearly not recommending you purchase it from there but it does suggest it might be available through other stockists too.
I like the bamboo ones from Who Gives a Crap but I think the issue is your bf needs to realize he can’t always wipe with something that feels like a towel if he cares about the environment.
So I am willing to compromise a bit on the eco-friendly part for this one product, as long as it's not tested on animals. Maybe it really doesn't exist (I was wondering, hence the title lol).
He's used recycled or bamboo TP for over 8 years - since we moved in together - and has transitioned everything else pretty happily/without issue (including a plant-based diet!) so I figured it was worth a shot asking the community!
I figure we all have our sticking points of an area where it's tough to find a cruelty-free option that fits our preferences. Some people it might be a skincare product, some maybe a cleaning product, etc.
Edit: typos!
Who Gives a Crap is vegan! And they donate 50% of their profits to clean water and sanitation nonprofits.
Its time to treat yo’ butt good!
Charmin ultra strong. Been using it for years and years. All through two people's food poisoning, two people with the Norwalk virus, and my wife's IBS, never once has a finger been put through it.
Although during particularly difficult session, something like Cottonelle ultra soft is a nice relief, though it doesn't 'grab'...things quite as well as the Charmin.
Charmin for sure. I used to use Purex but man! I was so wrong. Charmin is 1000% better.
I don't go for best. I go for best deal. Therefore I only buy TP in packs of 30 large rolls. Walmart brand has some, Royale has some, and most people know about Kirkland brand at Costco.
GV brand is cheaper than Costco and when the Royale is on sale, its even cheaper than both
Kirkland Signature, from Costco.
A bidet.
I've had an attachment for the last 4 years and will never be without. I bought my mom one and she loves it so much she got my brother one lol.
I have also started a bidet pyramid scheme. Only instead of money, the reward is a world with more bidets.
Royale Velour!
Just ran out of both and it seems that quality has gone down again since end of last year (stocked up before that). The brands I purchased no longer seem to be good. Whatever I look a seems to have complaints.
Used to get bounty paper towels, it seems like the quality has gone down and the prices have gone up. I used them in produce containers to keep veggies and salad dry so they last longer, and sometimes for cleaning up the grosser messes. Mostly use rags though.
I used to get kirkland TP when I had a costco membership. I switched to another brand from a local drugstore, which I stopped using after getting utis out of the blue and had trouble getting rid of them till i switched. Later I got Target Up & UP and that was ok for a bit, till the last batch, which has been pretty rough.
We live in a rental that has a tankless toilet, doesn't seem like anything will work with it. I heard that travel bidets aren't that great either, but I will try one and see if I can at least reduce toilet paper.
Tp- cottonelle or charmin - both last us longer (we use less) than cheaper brands - but scotts does better if you have old plumbing
Paper towels- Viva (only the soft ones that are “select a size” style - they last me a long time…I can only find them in the large packs and one large pack will last our family 6months)- so about a roll/month.
Charmin and Costco are a nightmare on old plumbing in my experience, though I do agree they last longer.
Scots, while good for plumbing, is the worst thing I’ve ever bought.
Angel soft is a good balance for me as it doesn’t clog toilets or feel like sandpaper. Middle price point too.
Agree that Angel soft is a compromise but not a frugal one for us as we end up using way too much of it.
I subscribe to Who Gives a Crap for toilet paper - ethical, sustainable, and affordable.
Me too. I get the bamboo and it's the best I've ever used. Ask me anything!
Yes! I've tried both (the recycled paper and the bamboo) and can honestly say both are as good as the other. And they're just a great company. If people don't have the space to store all the rolls at once it's the easiest thing in the world to go halvsies with a neighbor, friend, or family member.
I do the same. If we are still full on to when the next box comes in, I gift it to my in laws or friends. Honestly the rolls last forever.
And a single wrapped roll makes a great gag gift.
Oh, and the wrap can work great for gift wrapping small items
That's true! They come in such fun wrappings, they're lovely.
I thought the same thing when it came to toilet paper lol but maybe OP is thinking bidet users?
Ever since developing infections in 10x more sensitive to toilet papers, so far the only thing I’ve been able to use is Scott’s 1 ply, not sure why but I’m trying to see if there’s anything softer that’s not irritating at all?
All the soft brands even when the say unscented always cause irritation 😞
Great value(walmart brand) flushable wipes, it's a blue and white package relatively cheap and effective
Forget toilet paper. Try one of these: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=portable+bidet&crid=1I0U08MLBSOMT&sprefix=portable+bidet%2Caps%2C239&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
I have the $8 one, doesn't have to be anything fancy. I soak it once a week in 10% bleach to sanitize it, and I let it dry between uses instead of storing water in it.
Try ecohiny
Yooo me too! I feel like I never had any issues before my cUTI and now I do!
I use bamboo toilet paper in addition to using a bidet. I’ve been buying the Ecohiny brand on Amazon lately.
Hey all. I find buying high qualoty toilet paper and using less to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. What are some of the best brand you reccomend based off of best value? How about best tp, period?
Cottonelle Ultra. It’s nice and thick and doesn’t leave that nasty toilet paper lint like the cheapo shit does.
I love Costco brand toilet paper. Great quality and great price.
I 2nd that. Kirkland brand ain't no joke when you're ready to get serious about your tp.
When you have a septic tank as I do (the joys of living rural) it's Scott or Marcall 1000.
For a sparkly anus and fresh feeling, I suggest investing 30 or 40 bucks in a bidet attachment for your toilet. It takes 5 minutes to install and I have cut my toilet paper consumption in half. Also, quality doesn't matter for the paper since all I am doing with it is blotting dry. I recommend.
I'm surprised no one has suggested a bidet yet. Quite awhile ago a redditt post asked what was the best use of Amazon gift cards, and as I recall the top comments were electric kettle, bidet, and ODI scanner. A bidet kit from an online retailer will add one to your toilet for a small cost, and save lots of toilet paper (just drying yourself, actually).
40 dollar bidet attachment was a game changer for me.
Save a ton on toilet paper.
what are the best hypoallergenic toilet paper brands?
Key Considerations for Hypoallergenic Toilet Paper:
Material: Look for toilet paper made from 100% recycled paper or bamboo, as these materials are often less irritating to sensitive skin.
Chemical-Free: Choose brands that are free from dyes, fragrances, and chlorine bleach, as these can cause allergic reactions or irritation.
Softness and Strength: Ensure the toilet paper is both soft and strong, providing comfort without tearing easily.
Certification: Check for certifications like "hypoallergenic" or "dermatologist-tested" to ensure the product is suitable for sensitive skin.
Recommended Brands:
Seventh Generation: Made from 100% recycled paper, this brand is free from dyes and fragrances, making it a great hypoallergenic option.
Bamboo Toilet Paper (e.g., Who Gives a Crap): Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic and biodegradable, and this brand offers soft, strong rolls without harmful chemicals.
Cottonelle Ultra ComfortCare: While not entirely recycled, it is known for being gentle on the skin and is free from dyes and fragrances.
Angel Soft (Sensitive Skin): This variant is designed for sensitive skin and is free from dyes and fragrances, providing a balance of softness and strength.
Charmin Sensitive: Specifically designed for sensitive skin, it is dermatologist-tested and free from dyes and fragrances.
Recommendation: If you have particularly sensitive skin or allergies, I recommend starting with Seventh Generation or Who Gives a Crap for their commitment to hypoallergenic materials and eco-friendliness. Always check the packaging for specific claims related to hypoallergenic properties.
