Colorado Avalanche vs. Detroit Red Wings
The rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings is often cited as one of the greatest in NHL history. It began during the Avalanche's successful 1995-1996 season, marked by intense games and memorable brawls, such as the infamous "Brawl in Hockeytown" [1]. This rivalry was fueled by both teams being powerhouses in the late '90s and early 2000s, with numerous playoff battles and physical confrontations
[2:1].
Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens
The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens have a long-standing rivalry that many fans consider the deepest in the NHL. Known for its passionate fanbase and historic matchups, this rivalry has been a staple in both regular season and playoff games [3]. The intensity of their encounters is legendary, making each game between these two teams highly anticipated
[3:4].
Battle of Alberta: Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
The Battle of Alberta between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers is another classic rivalry. Known for its fierce competition and high stakes, this rivalry has seen periods of heightened tension, particularly when both teams were performing well [2:5]
[5:1]. Although it has cooled down recently due to player trades, it remains a significant part of NHL history
[5:1].
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens
Another historic rivalry is between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. These two Original Six teams have a deep-rooted animosity that extends beyond the ice, influencing fans and local culture [3]. The rivalry is characterized by passionate debates and fierce competition, making it a cornerstone of Canadian hockey
[4:3].
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
The rivalry between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins is known for its intensity and physicality. Spanning several decades, this rivalry has produced epic playoff series and memorable moments, driven by the geographic proximity and competitive spirit of both teams [2:1]
[5:6].
These rivalries highlight the passion and drama that make NHL hockey so captivating. While some rivalries have faded over time due to changes in team dynamics and league structure, they remain an integral part of the sport's rich history.
Ah yes, the Avalanche. Established during the 1995-1996 season with the relocation of the Quebec Nordiques, the Avs found success right out of the gate, getting all the way to the 1995-1996 Stanley Cup Final and sweeping the Florida Panthers. During the cup run, the greatest rivalry in hockey was born with the Detroit Redwings. No one can forget the Brawl in Hockeytown. With all stars and hall of famers at every skill position, the Avs of the late 90’s early 2000’s were a force. Add in the legendary Ray Bourque, the Avs dominated their way to a second Cup in 2000-2001. One of the few teams to go toe to toe with the 2001-2002 Redwings, the Avs took a 3-2 conference finals lead, only to have the wheels fall off and get absolutely butt fucked in game 7. Add in an embarrassing 3-1 blown series and losing to the three year old Minnesota Wild, who pay roll was less than Joe Sakic’s salary, in 2003, the Avs took a turn. Here’s a look following the disappointing 2002-2003 season:
2003-2004: Lost second round to San Jose. 2004-2005: Lockout. 2005-2006: Lost second round to Anaheim. 2006-2007: DNQ. 2007-2008: Lost second round to Detroit. 2008-2009: DNQ. 2009-2010: Lost first round to San Jose. 2010-2013: DNQ. 2013-2014: Lost first round to Minnesota. 2014-2017: DNQ. 2017-2018: Lost first round to Nashville. 2018-2019: Lost second round to San Jose. 2019-2020: Lost second round to Dallas. 2020-2021: Lost second round to Vegas. 2021-2022: Won Stanley Cup against Tampa. 2022-2023: Lost first round to Seattle. 2023-2024: Lost second round to Dallas. 2024-2025: Lost first round to Dallas.
I’m not going to sit here and feel sorry for Colorado’s current playoff mishap. Only thing missing a quality goaltending. Their Captian Gabriel Landeskog returning from major knee surgery will help with this coming season. Nathan McKinnion and Cale Makar continue to show why they are two of the best hockey playoffs in the world. A 4th Stanley Cup Banner doesn’t seem far off…unless they meet Minnesota or Dallas in the postseason, the Avs kryptonite.
They got some really lucky calls against Tampa to end Tampa’s dynasty with a couple of OT wins. Now they are on a fast decline.
They are on the decline. Everything but the top line and top pair sucks.
Red Wings hate, hate, hate the Maple Leafs. The famous 1938-39 season brawl at the Olympia. The famous 1940 brawl in Game 2 of the finals where Sid Abel scored to make it 3-1, and a donnybrook occurred that stopped play for 10 minutes. After the game, HC Jack Adams punched a fan who confronted him.
Don’t get me wrong, Detroit hates the Avs as well. The Avs can lose for the next 70 years. But 30 years of hate don’t go back as 100 years of hate.
Just got into hockey so I know about some rivalries, but what’s more recent intense rivalries if you were to rank a top 3 order
"Recent" is kind of a vague word. Does Red Wings/Avs count as recent? Back in the 90s/00s that was one of the most explosive rivalries in all of sports. But the conference realignment in 2013 broke them up, now they only play twice a year and never in the playoffs, so the on-ice rivalry is basically dead and just lives on in the fanbases.
More recent great rivalries would be Chicago/LA between 2010/2015, when both teams were winning Cups and regularly meeting in the playoffs. Avs and Blues has also been very hot recently, especially since the "win and you're in" game 82 of 2017/18 and the consecutive playoff series of 2021 and 2022. And Toronto/Boston has been pretty bitter, although that one is a bit one-sided because Boston has won every playoff series in recent memory.
Juat popping in to say fuck Claude Lemieux.
Bettman vs fans
But seriously:
Ovi vs Sid in the playoffs was always a treat.
Flames and Oilers getting spicy again.
I’d argue Oilers vs Flames is less spicy than it was 3-4 years ago, since both teams were good at the time.
Toronto vs Playoffs
I was gonna say Toronto and Boston, wait no Toronto and MTL, wait no Toronto and Tampa, wait no Toronto and Florida
Boston vs having clean players
Really its Marchand that seems to be the main offender.
As a leaf fan, this made me laugh and cry 😂
As a leaf fan, hockey makes me laugh and cry
Tkachuk vs Tkachuk
Not in order.....
Penguins Flyers circa 2006-2016. Days when guys like Orpik, Kunitz, Hartnell, Carcillo would kill each other every time they met. Playoff series were epic.
Penguins Capitals. 2007-2018 Sid vs Geno. Numerous memorable playoff battles.
Avalanche v Red wings circa 1997-2004. The Brawl. Just YouTube it. There is even a documentary on it on ESPN+
Personally I think its still Boston vs Montreal, there's something special when they face in the regular season or playoffs.
You can obviously argue penguins vs capitals, Boston vs Toronto, Toronto vs Montreal, Flyers vs Penguins, flames vs oilers etc
Bruins and Canadiens are both equally good NHL franchises overall, every time they face I just feel the atmosphere is amazing, whether it's in Boston or Montreal.
ps: PK Subban breakway goal in 2014 is probably still my favourite playoff goal ever lol
Rangers and devils and flyers back in the day. (90s)Fans would fight in the stands if anyone of them played each other
I live close to DC. Penguins and Caps with Ovie and Crosby over the years have been special to see. And it still continues, which is wild tbh
I feel like if the Canes had a real breakout marketable star then the Caps could have a real rivalry with them too.
Battle of Alberta
This is the correct answer and the deepest rivalry in the NHL for sure. A true rivalry born of hate. The others are rivalries but not on the BOA Richter scale
I don’t know of any other rivalry that has people straight up bashing each other’s actual cities… like infrastructure and shit. Cities which, by the way, are three hours away from each other. Always makes me laugh.
Battle of Alberta on Lake Louise.
Stonks if only Bettman made it happen
Leafs vs the 1st round
I was going to say the Leafs vs Themselves, but this works too.
Not much a rivalry if it’s 6-0?
To be faaaaaiiiirrrrrr. It’s been one sided for too long. I do miss the hate of the early 2010’s
No rivalry in the NHL will ever equal the one between Quebec and Montréal.
The rivalry wasn't only on the ice, it was also in the homes of those who watched, people would fight over who's the best team at family gatherings. Some restaurant owners went as far as not serving the opposite team.
Le match du Vendredi Saint was a good example of how they hated each other.
Fights, pure hatred, and fans hating each other
Vegas Golden Knights/San Jose Sharks is my personal favorite. Edmonton Oilers/Calgary Flames always explodes too. You can’t forget the rivalry between Florida and the playoffs either.
MTL vs BOS vs TOR in any order these three teams hate each other with passion.
Islanders/Rangers
Don’t disagree that this is a big one. As a Rangers fan, you could make an argument for Rangers/Islanders, Rangers/Devils, Rangers/Flyers, or even Rangers/Caps.
But I think old school, long term Rangers fans would say Rangers/Islands. Potvin Sucks!!
On different note - as a random visitor to New York area - with all due respect - I can tell there is absolutely no fan atmosphere in MSG (I guess no real fans can afford going there but wall street financiers), but boy, it is a hell of rumble in Colliseum (because a lot of ordinary people there are).
Minnesota sports in general have an issue where we think someone is our rival, but they beat us every time so the other team doesn't see us as a rival.
Sabres and Leafs
I’m trying to get into hockey recently. I’m familiar with some historic rivalries but am looking for some juicy games to watch
Probably Winnipeg/Minnesota? Regular season rivalries are next to non-existent in the current NHL because of the way they do the scheduling. It’ll be the most random-ass games that have the highest tension and PIM. Rivalries don’t exist until playoffs pretty much.
Honestly it’s kinda upsetting, I wanna go back to playing the same teams a ton of times in the regular season bc it developed rivalries. Boston montreal doesn’t exist anymore, Boston leafs makes more sense but that’s bc they happen to meet in the playoffs so often, the closest we’ve had to a good rivalry is oilers flames in the battle of Alberta but then both the main players in that got traded and there wasn’t enough to keep it going.
The rivalries developed in the 56 game covid season were ruthless. Playing 7 teams 8 times each will do that I guess. I kinda liked it.
flyers x pens is still very alive and well hahah
The NHL vs local fans who don't have cable.
It's probably the biggest in the league.
As a local fan without cable I’d argue this one is too one sided to be a rivalry :(
Ottawa vs Detroit have been better imo
Chicago Blackhawks and the IR.
Not sure what IR means, so this may be a redundant statement but I can’t wait for the next Chicago/New Jersey game
Same here!! It’s when they pan the camera to poor Mrs. Tkachuk looking disapprovingly at both her son’s teams destroying each other that always gets me though lol
That game was an embarrassment to hockey
Can’t wait for a Tkatchuk vs Tkatchuk
Everyone knows the Leafs and the Bruins hate each other. Big fucking deal. I want REAL niche rivalries.
Vancouver vs Chicago was insane for a few good years
Vancouver vs Boston was also insane for a couple years
Vancouver vs good management is the only rivalry we have now.
Blues-Red Wings in the 90s was must see hockey. I treasured every time I got to go to a playoff game between those two. Really sad when that rivalry died.
I was going to post this one as well. It was obviously lopsided as the Wings typically got the best of the Blues, but those were some great games and a great rivalry that is completely gone now.
Montreal vs Quebec
This is the answer. It was fueled by cultural, political, and economic tensions, plus genuine bad blood between players.
The Canadiens were seen as the establishment team: rich history, Stanley Cups, backed by English-speaking ownership for much of their early history.
The Nordiques were the insurgents: representing working-class Quebec City, fueled by separatist pride during a time when the Quebec sovereignty movement was politically explosive.
The best example is the “Good Friday Massacre”, on April 20, 1984, when Quebec and Montreal met in the playoffs
In the first two periods, 252 penalty minutes were handed out.
Multiple bench-clearing brawls happened, one literally at the end of the second period when players didn’t know the period had ended and kept fighting.
The Nordiques’ Dale Hunter sucker-punched Guy Carbonneau, which set off another wave of fights.
Referee Bruce Hood ejected 10 players, and some had to be dragged off the ice.
This game is still shown in highlight reels as the example of unrestrained NHL violence.
Patrick Roy was once asked how he felt playing for the Montreal Canadiens. He said he hated them growing up since he was born in Quebec City.
The wings/avs rivalry was already dead by that time, but other than Columbus the Central division hated each other. Chicago/Detroit/St.Louis/Nashville all had bad blood except for maybe the Blues and the Preds.
The old 5-team divisions were interesting at the end, because some were one team dominating for stretches (the southeast with Washington beating up on Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, and atlanta/winnipeg) and others were just complete and total bloodbaths (the Atlantic with NYR, NYI, NJD, PIT, and PHI)
I remember how I got excited for March to roll around in the late 2000s and early 2010s, because Sundays on NBC i could flip on a noon matinee in the Atlantic division and just see a crazy fucking grudge match between Pittsburgh and the islanders, or devils/Rangers, or out of division and see the flyers and Bruins just trying to kill each other.
I like the larger divisions though, and I like that every team plays every other team twice, but I do miss seeing divisional opponents play each other like 6+ times a season.
TJ Oshie vs Rick Nash in 09 was the closest the Blues ever got to a rivalry with the Blue Jackets
Avalanche v Red wings. Is it extinct now? Feels like it.
I live in Colorado as a Wings fan and it’s extinct. The nostalgia is there among the fans that remember but we all agree that it’s over.
There are tales of Christmases ruined because a Habs fan receiving Nordiques gear as a gift from his Nordiques-loving brother-in-law turned into an all-out brawl…
I remember being so excited for that rivalry to continue when they met up in the 08 playoffs, only for Franzen to singlehandedly obliterate the Avs more than I've ever seen any skater take over a playoff series. 9 goals in 4 games, what a legend.
Which historic rivalries does your team have that feel like "old news" and why?
As a Detroit fan, we talk a lot about the rivalry with Colorado and what it was. Now though, it feels like that is just another really tough team to beat, but not like the blood feud it once was. By contrast, when we play Ottawa, I feel like we need the contemporary equivalent of McCarty to throw down on whoever is the Lemieux of the Senators.
I think it is interesting how these change over time, but I am curious what other rivalries of yesterday are "over" or cooled off enough that you can watch without feeling that over hostility to the opposing team.
Caps vs Pens
Used to be a top rivalry, it’s still big, but not the marquee value used to have
That's what happens when the two main guys get old and the teams get worse.
Still the games I look forward to the most each year
Detroit and Chicago. People keep trying to fan the flames whenever they happen to play, but TBH it was dead before they even went to the Eastern Conference.
Same here ; Detroit fan and I miss those good days battling with Colorado.
That was flash in pan rivalry for a few years. Still fun, but never expected to be sustained (even if Detroit stayed in west conference).
At least now they can meet in the Cup finals. Detroit will keep leveling up
We sure hope so ...
Good old Yzerman and Lidstrom days are LONG gone (unfortunately)
The heated, historic Florida Panthers fans vs Florida Panthers ownership rivalry is at an all time low right now for sure
Boston/Montreal was significant for so long and means nothing today.
Interesting note: Before the rinks were standard-sized, teams would build playstyles that gave them more home-ice advantage. Montreal had a bigger, wider rink. The playstyle was built around speed and passing. Boston had a smaller rink and they were built around strength and size. The differing flavors made for a stronger rivalry.
Came here to say this. I mean, Fuck the Habs, but it isn’t anything like it once was.
That's awesome. I didn't know it was that varied. I do remember that some rinks had unusual quirks. Joe Lewis Arena had very lively boards so you could expect big rebounds if you shot wide, but nothing to the extent of different dimensions.
For this, it has to be a mutual rivalry both ways. So how the Sabres biggest rival is Toronto, but Toronto is always occupied with bigger fish. So it would have to be like Montreal vs Boston, where both teams acknowledge that 4 times a year is war.
Wild fan, the first round of the playoffs.
First round of the playoffs is Minnesota's biggest rival in every sport
We love getting hot right before the playoffs
First round of the playoffs are more occupied with the Leafs
I say Islanders. I was a Ranger fan in Islander country. It was hell.
The Canucks vs the front office and ownership.
Tampa and the salary cap
This year we lost
At least you’re still 2-1
And ours has gotta be the Rangers, I've never heard of the Islanders
They’re on some island somewhere idk
This is the only correct answer for the Yotes
I just finished watching an NHL documentary of the best rivalries of the 1990's and found it very interesting. What rivalries would you say are the best in the last few years? Which ones are more intense now than they used to be or not as intense anymore?
Bruins fans: Mom can we have the Canadiens rivalry?
Mom: No, we have a Canadian rivalry at home.
Canadian rivalry at home: It's the fucking Maple Leafs.
Can you even consider it a rivalry when Boston just wins all the time
We lost something like from 1943 to 1988 to Montreal in the Playoffs and it was one of the biggest, if not the biggest rivalry in Hockey. I would say yes. Ralphie beat up Scott Farkus eventually, its bound to happen.
I just hope not now for the memes.
Absolutely. It’s like the opposite of Bruins Habs in the sense that they always have our number in the playoffs as well. Sooner or later Toronto will come up with the win and that’s going to feel amazing for your fanbase.
That aside, even if you’re on the losing side of it now our series are always entertaining as fuck and get increasingly butt clenching with every year. After certain games last year I was all but convinced it was finally your meme revenge
If the Habs can actually pull it together under Claude I have a feeling that rivalry will increase ten fold. I’d love to see it too, Habs Bs is easily my favorite all time sports rivalry. Absolutely hated those fuckers for so many years
We hated you too brother, we hated you too...
Seriously though, I wish we can get back to that.
There's nothing like a game 7 between our two teams. Now it's just sad cause there's no stake to our games anymore. We're about as threatening to you guys as an ant is to a giant...
Gut feeling says if Lafreniere goes to Montreal, that rivalry will come back overnight.
Battle of Alberta or San Jose and Vegas
Alberta definitely took the pacific crown for rivalries this season. Rivalries die when one team isn't competitive
I feel there’s more vitriol to that rivalry than any other ones currently besides the battle of Alberta. Just because SJ isn’t very good as a whole on the year doesn’t mean they don’t bring it against Vegas. I do see your point though and it will be interesting to see next year how the games are.
Pegulas and their fanbase is getting up there. Very underrated.
Going to be a lot of Battle of Alberta in here, but honestly if I'm picking outside my bias, Leafs Bruins is so full of salt on both sides. I've never seen so many fans on either side get so pissed that their own player fell down, calling for penalties on an opposing player 4 feet away from the play.
Hi guys,
In your opinion, what is the best rivalry in the league and why?
Montreal-Boston is something too
That is some big hits and history behind that rivalry
Being from Hartford, I have to mention Whalers-Bruins. It was one-sided, but it was so big that it spilled into Bruins-Penguins and, well, this hit happened. Then, Neely’s leg ossified (muscle turned to bone), ending his career. SB Nation did a thing on it.
I'll go with the Penguins vs Flyers.
I much prefer Flyers v. Flyers
That three game stretch in early 2020 was the stuff of legends.
Kassian vs Tkachuk. Bear vs Tkachuk. Smith vs Talbot.
Really? If we’re reminiscing nobody for Detroit vs Colorado?
easily one of the most insane rivalries in ANY sport
I'm picturing your dad holding baby you, going up behind every dude at the urinal, "Hey, are you a Red Wings fan? No? Oh, how about you?" Peeking his head under stalls: "Hey bud, you like the Red Wings?" Until he's finally met the quorum and can change your diaper.
And a obligatory, Red Wings Suck! I miss the days we did photoshop battles on the avs message board. Good stuff.
Disagree, as neither team has been properly competitive in a seriously long time.
I give my vote to MTL/BOS.
Have to say, last year both teams looked closer to any sort of Battle of Alberta compared to the 80s that I can remember. Hope to see more of that!
And also Toronto vs Toronto as mentioned previously is Canada’s favourite rivalry.
