TL;DR Some of the most popular men's colognes include Dior Sauvage, Acqua di Gio by Armani, Bleu de Chanel, Creed Aventus, and Versace Eros.
Popular Fragrances
Several fragrances consistently appear as favorites among users. Dior Sauvage is frequently mentioned for its wide appeal, though some find it too common [1:7],
[2:10]. Acqua di Gio by Armani is another staple, praised for its fresh scent suitable for spring and summer
[1:1],
[2:2]. Bleu de Chanel is highlighted for its versatility and ability to suit various occasions
[3:6],
[3:8].
Fragrance Preferences and Recommendations
The choice of fragrance can be subjective, influenced by personal preference and body chemistry [1:4],
[2:3]. Some users recommend trying decants or samples before committing to a full bottle, especially for more expensive options
[3:2],
[3:5]. Other popular recommendations include Creed Aventus for its sophisticated scent and Terre D’Hermes for a fresh, citrusy profile
[3:7],
[5:1].
Classic and Niche Choices
Classic scents like Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male and Fahrenheit by Dior remain popular due to their memorable and distinctive aromas [1:8],
[2:1]. For those interested in niche fragrances, options like Platinum Egoiste and LV Imagination offer unique profiles that are less commonly worn
[3:1],
[3:3].
Trends and Influences
The popularity of certain colognes can be driven by social media trends and influencer recommendations. Fragrances such as One Million, Invictus, and Cool Water continue to be best-sellers, often featured in influencer content [4:1],
[4:2].
Additional Considerations
When selecting a cologne, it's important to consider the season and occasion. Some fragrances are better suited for warmer months, while others excel in cooler weather [1:1],
[3:7]. Additionally, moderation in application is key, as overuse can be off-putting
[2:12].
What are your experiences in the cologne game? Which brands or smells are the best in your opinion. If you can recommend something share it in the comments:)
There's no universal answer to this. A man needs a scent that suits his personality, and some are better in fall, for example, than summer. My personal go to is Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee.
Age is also a big factor - your natural scent changes with age, so should your fragrance
Dior Sauvage if you wanna smell like “I lift and have feelings.” Girls love it, guys fear it.
This is one of my go-to's.
I run Acqua di Gio by Armani(Summer/Spring), Sauvage by Dior(Fall/Winter), Chrome by Azzaro(summer/Spring), & Unltd by Ecko for the time being but I am looking to phase the last one out for something like Fahrenheit or a warmer scent for winter.
Open to recommendations!!
Consistent compliments on Acqua Di Gio. Also Calvin Klein Eternity.
I'm really into fragrances so I guess I will chime in.
For starters, and not to sound like a snob, but the word cologne is a made up word so that perfumes can be marketed towards men.
Fragrances are diluted, which is where you get the terms like Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum. For example, a Parfum is going to smell way more intense and last longer than an Eau de Toilette.
Your body chemistry does play an important role in how fragrances will smell on you. Also, these are totally subjective, so while asking for recommendations is fine, you really just need to hit up Sephora or Ulta and just smell them. If a store doesn't have what you like, you can find a brand and get a sample set online.
If you're just now getting into fragrances, don't go out and buy a $500 bottle (ie Aventus). Figure out what you like, what smells good on you, etc. Ask your friends their opinion when you wear it. Then go explore some of the niche brands.
My favorites that I wear all the time:
Born in Roma Intense by Valentino
Sauvage Elixir by Dior
Spice Bomb Night Vision by Viktor & Rolf
The Most Wanted by Azzarro
Fierce by Abercrombie
Man by Jimmy Choo
MYSLF by YSL
Man by Jimmy Choo is my go to right now. I like Coach black as well. Was a Burberry man for probably 15 years before that.
My wife makes sure I don’t run out of Man by Jimmy Choo
The ones who are quite clearly in the market for cologne, ya know like this thread is about, apparently feel they do.
Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male. The original one in a blue bottle. Only one ive smelled and actually remembered, it was that good. And this was nearly 2 decades ago I smelled it for the first time.
I’ve had women tell me they weren’t into me but that my smell was distractingly good with this stuff.
Lynx/Axe tends to do both deodorant and cologne for each scent. Possibly also body wash and shampoo so you can be a lynx from head to toe.
I keep seeing the same names pop up whenever people talk about “the best fragrance to attract women”—stuff like Dior Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel, Creed Aventus, La Nuit de L’Homme, Armani Code, and Versace Eros.
But I’m curious about real experiences:
Women, which scents on a guy have actually made you stop and think “damn, he smells good”?
Men, which colognes have gotten you the most compliments or attention?
Do you prefer something fresh and clean (citrus, aquatic) or more warm and spicy (amber, leather, oud)?
Bonus: Does too much cologne kill the vibe even if it smells great?
I want to know if the hype fragrances really live up to it, or if women actually like something more unique and low-key.
Thanks in advance—your answers might save a lot of us from blind-buying the wrong bottle 😅
These are oldies, but my all time faves are Issey Miyake (L’eau de Issey) and Fahrenheit by Dior
LOVE farenheit.. i see so many gen x women here.. Drakkar Farenheit so good.. i also love Aqua Di Gio
L'eau D'issey is absolutely fantastic (male perspective)
Was gonna say. The only constant with attraction is that you have to smell clean underneath the cologne smell. You can only achieve this the boring way, by showering daily, brushing and flossing on schedule, using deodorant/antiperspirant (unscented if wearing cologne), and wearing clean clothes.
It goes a long way if we know we can rely on you to be clean. This is fundamental to attraction.
After that, you should choose your own favourite cologne, make sure it smells good on you and not just in the bottle. Then the scent will be attractive to women who share your taste.
Lol this smells great but it's also what my dad wears
I didn't say it smelled bad. Just that it's, in my opinion, generic as hell, so when I smell someone smelling like Dior Sauvage, I'll (on a subconscious level) probably assume they're generic. Which doesn't matter in the slightest with strangers, but I would be actively turned off on let's say a date, and every woman I've talked to about this felt the same way. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it and just dislike it because I've smelled it so much. Of course, there's selectionbias bc every woman who even knows what Dior Sauvage is probably is into fragrances, while most people just think "this person smells nice" lol
Honestly, plain soap smell on a guy is pretty awesome. It's a great starting point!
> Does too much cologne kill the vibe even if it smells great?
I love sitting around a campfire. I love that smell. I love the smell of a roaring fireplace. If you set my house on fire I would die of smoke inhalation.
If boy math is “one spray will attract one woman so ten should get me a harem”, you have failed math class.
Funnily enough, Duke Cannon and a few other men’s soap companies have a campfire scented soap.
Now realizing the reason I might dislike men’s cologne is bc of rampant overspray.
Give me a sec, I'll connect to the woman-hivemind.
But seriously, absolutely not Dior Sauvage. Generic as hell
Smells like my mouth is being washed out with soap and water. Hope never to smell it on a guy I am attracted to!
My wife of 15 years has been getting on me lately about not wearing cologne anymore. But it’s been so long, and I’m out of the loop. I used to wear department store cologne (Armani, RL, Lacoste, etc.) in my younger years. That said, I’d like to buy something a little more classy ($$$) now that I’m an actual adult.
What top three would you recommend? Honestly, I started to research, but at this point, I don’t even care. I’ve had a few drinks, and will just order whatever you tell me. I trust you.
Lastly, one of my friends recommended Creed Aventus. But before I spend $300, is it worth it?
Appreciate any and all help, thank you!
UPDATE: Just want to thank everyone for taking the time to respond. I honestly learned a lot. Decided to heed the advice from many of you, and go to the store with my wife to test out the different fragrances. I will be making a list of all of the frequently mentioned fragrances from this thread. Thank you!!
I’ll chime in and say make sure you buy decants of your choices before you blind buy larger sizes especially since you’re looking at more expensive selections. If you haven’t worn cologne in a while it may take some time to figure out what you like. If your wife isn’t used to you wearing cologne she’ll also have to figure out what she likes on you as well. Get those decants and have a nice evening sampling them and getting each others opinions on them
This is the way to go. Smells are so subjective. You will want her to smell them too. Decants will help you find something you like. Before you buy a $400 bottle of something that makes you gag. You can get them from Scentsplit and Jomashop.
I did 2ml samples of a bunch of scents. I ended up liking Green Irish Tweed, Viking Cologne, and Prada’s Luna Rossa Carbon the most.
I personally like LV Imagination a lot. It’s so clean and fresh that it doesn’t even really smell like cologne. That being said, sample before you buy because it’s not cheap (~$350). With LV specifically, when you buy a bottle of their cologne you get two free samples. I would suggest buying a bottle of Imagination and choosing Imagination as one of your free samples. When you get the package, try out the sample on your skin first. Let it dry, get your wife’s opinion on it. If you both like it, keep the bottle. If not, return it (they include a return label in the packaging in case you wanna return it, you just need to call them first to initiate the return process).
Myslf by YSL is seriously one of the better colognes I’ve ever used
Some options I’ll throw in:
LV Imagination: clean, fresh, citrusy, smells like luxury soap on the best way.
Bleu de Chanel: I have the Parfum and IMO it’s a perfect all around scent. Dress it up, dress it down, you’ll always find that it works for the occasion.
Chanel platinum egoiste: Fresh barbershop vibes. Clean, woody, lightly floral.
Those are the three in my collection that are easy reaches any time if I just want to smell good and not overpowering or offense. Prices decrease top to bottom.
Platinum Egoiste is just a classic scent. I know it’s not for everyone but I just love that clean and fresh smell. Top 3 for me.
If you’re not trying to jump too far in the deep end I would say go with:
Tom Ford Noir Extreme edp for colder months
Terre D’Hermes EDT for the warmer months
Bleu De Chanel EDP or Parfum for all year round
What does Noir extreme smell like? I know I can look up the notes online, but I’m just curious why it’s so highly recommended. My fiancé loves ombre leather on me, but she’s not a big fan of stuff like tobacco vanille and tolerates oud wood, if that provides any useful context 😅
For me it’s an easy reach in the colder months. It’s sweet but still spicy and masculine. I’m not a fan of tobacco Vanille or oud wood honestly. My wife doesn’t like either of them. She loves Noir Extreme though. She’s actually the one who bought me the bottle. If you have a Nordstrom’s near you I highly suggest you check it out. Then go buy it from a discounter.
It's much different from Oud wood and Tobacco Vanille. It's not overly masculine but just smells like a well put together guy in a suit. It's great for date nights since it's not super loud, and IMO stays closer to the body.
Bleu De Chanel Eau De Parfum. This is just great, masculinity and cleanliness in a bottle. Wife will love it, as will you.
If you like citrus Eau Givree TDH

There's a simple formula to figure this out:
Just scroll through the countless rinse-and-repeat photos from people asking for fragrance collection evaluations on here. You'll notice the same fragrances popping up over and over, directly tied to TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube influencers' "best ever", "the beastiest of beast modes", or "I was chased down and tackled 9 times because of this fragrance" recommendations. That trend alone reveals the top 5 best-sellers, driven purely by the massive reach of these platforms and the human urge to fit in.
Nailed it
Acqua di Gio Parfum
sauvage, aqua di gio, one million, jog le male, invictus
honourable mentions: stronger with you, jpg scandal, phantom, cool water, ck one
Cool Water is still hanging in there I see. Just for that I know what my scent of the day is going to be 🥹

I've had colognes here and there in the past but I never really did too much research, or tried samples, or looked into which ones fit my own personal profile. Most of what I had would be gifts from friends/family, or just me picking up something on sale. I would end up with a nice one here and there (Armani Code and YSL La Suit De L'Homme for example) but never bothered to look into colognes any more beyond that.
Lately though I've been looking to get into the game a little bit more, so I started reading up on well-regarded/popular scents over the years, and started to order samplers to see what worked for me. I didn't want to go too hard to start with, so after months of trying ~20 different scents, I narrowed it down to the 3 in the photo that I ended up buying to start my collection:
- Mont Blanc Explorer EdP
- Azzaro Most Wanted Parfum
- Terre D'Hermers EdT
These 3 just felt like the perfect combination of smell and longevity for me - and also the ones that got some of the most compliments from my wife lol, so that was also a factor.
For reference, I sampled the below (not including the 3 I bought already) before committing. Putting in my now personal rating out of 5 as well:
- Bleu de Chanel (4/5)
- Prada Luna Rossa Carbon (4.5/5)
- Givenchy Gentlemen Privee (3.5/5)
- Tom Ford Grey Vetiver (4.5/5)
- Creed Silver Mountain Water (5/5)
- Versace Eros (3/5)
- D&G The One (4.5/5)
- YSL Y (4/5)
- Armani Acqua di Gio Profondo (4/5)
- JPG Le Male Le Parfum (3.5/5)
- Spicebomb by Viktor and Rolf (3/5)
- Valentino Uomo Born in Roma (3.5/5)
- Dior Sauvage (2/5)
- Parfums de Marly Layton (4/5)
- Hugo Boss Bottled Absolu (3.5/5)
- Bvlgari Man in Black (4/5)
- Guerlain L'Homme Ideal (4/5)
- Armaf Club de Nuit Intense (2/5)
- Le Labo Santal 33 (4.5/5)
I think the scent that I overall loved the best was Creed Silver Mountain Water - but I'm not ready to spend that kind of money just yet so I'm holding off for the time being. D&G The One was amazing as well and but it really doesn't last very long.
Still though, excited to start this new addiction to consumerism!
I’m guessing we have a same style/nose. Agree with pretty much all of your ratings even. But SMW has also been my absolute favorite. Check fragranceswap on here and see! I got a 100ml of SMW for $150
Have the Terre d'Hermes - awesome scent 👌
What’s it like? apart from awesome
CEO, orange, fresh, mature, brave, woody.
Bought yesterday Explorer, smells great but it last maybe 3 hours, disappointed.
Explorer is such an easy reach for any day or any event. Plus it’s cheap. Enjoy my friend!
I have them both but explorer blue is so damn good
Haven’t tried that one. What’s it similar to?
great start
What do you honestly think is the best smelling men's fragrance of all time?
Dior Homme original (pre-2020)
It's Habit Rouge you heathens.
Oh yes Habit Rouge is lovely. I've also fallen hard for Heritage. It's at the top of my wishlist.
Heritage is excellent, I wore it for many years and it remains one of the smoothest and cosiest drydowns I've ever experienced.
They did? I do one light spray in the morning, and if I’m too close to it I immediately regret it. I find it very intense.
Which version do you recommend, the edt or parfum?
I only have ever tried and used EDT.
YSL LNDL or Bleu De Chanel. They're basic by this point but I've never smelled anything as good as either of these.
Everyone in here is talking about it so I bought a sample of the EDT and parfum version, we'll see if I like it
Where do you buy your samples?
Pleased to see my personal favourite near the top! Truly an iconic scent, and I've been wearing it for so long that it actually feels like an old friend now.
Same, it doesn’t get old for me. I try other fragrances from time to time and think “Mmmh, nice”, only to be tired of them 20 minutes later.
New to fragrance. I'm always paranoid that I'm wearing to much so I never wear cologne. Any recommendations for mild scents to wear casually everyday?
Banana Republic Classic smells like soap, so that's a very mild fragrance.
Eau de Lacoste L.12.12. White is a pretty shower-gel-type of fresh scent. Quite mild too.
Almost anything in Acqua di Parma's Blu Mediterraneo line is pretty mild/light citrus-forward. For example I would say Arancia do Capri, Bergamotto di Calabria, and Fico di Amalfi are all nice and inoffensive.
Burberry Brit is more of a cold weather fragrance, but it strikes me as good for white collar working men looking for something inoffensive and professional.
Oh, and the biggest factor: Don't use much. I would start out with a single spray on your inner elbow or wrist and see how you feel about that level. If you feel even that's too light, you could step up to a spray on each arm/wrist. I wouldn't go more than that, even with the lightest of scents, if you're looking to keep the smell to yourself.
I second Lacoste blanc. It’s strong to the wearer at first but after about 30 mins my girlfriend won’t notice it on me in public.
Talking about Acqua di Parma: the "Colonia" line is also very nice as subtle men's fragrances. They have a more classic feel to it, maybe leaning a little more masculine than the entirely unisex Blu mediterraneo line.
I wore Arancia di Capri this morning - sprayed myself a LOT from a sample I got at Bloomingdale’s and it maybe lasted an hour.
I'm lucky in that I find their stuff stays for hours on me. Even more so if I put it on clothes rather than skin - that will last an easy 12 hours for me. It doesn't project much but I'm happy with that.
Chinotto Di Liguria is my absolute favourite but sadly seems to have been discontinued.
I second Arancia di Capri. Very light orange scent. One of my least noticeable out of a large collection. I wear it when I want to be invisible but nice if someone gets really close.
Prada l’homme
Seconded. I’d also try Prada L’Homme L’Eau, especially in the summer months.
I like this recommendation.
Very likeable/inoffensive, versatile, and classy. It's not a loud fragrance, or something that will offend your workmates. Easy to sample in a store too. A great fragrance to start with.
I like L'eau d'Issey by Issey Miyake. It’s pretty easy on the nose, and is one of my favs. Also not that expensive.
I was also thinking that or the flanker l’eau d’Issey intense.
To be honest I used to be obsessed with wearing cologne, and feel your struggle. There's only been two that I've ever recommended for being mild but incredible. They've both landed me tons of dates, compliments, and hookups actually. First one is Aqua Di Gio for it's subtle but masculine scent. And Dolce & Gabbana light blue! Aqua is more of a daytime scent, whereas the Dolce & Gabbana is more nightlife-y. Really depends on your tastes though, but both are long lasting and not overly-scented.
Versace- pour Homme
Valentino- Born in Roma Coral Fantasy
YSL- MYSLF
This is the answer!! 😮💨😮💨😮💨🔥🔥🔥 Eros energy is pretty good as well
Eros Energy, Yellow Dream, and Y EdT

😔 it’ll drop at midnight trust me
What colognes would you buy without a second thought if you saw they were on a big sale?
Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee
Yea it almost smells like the og armani code profumo and that was wonderful, sadly it's discontiued, but it's my favorite.
I wear Qaa’ed Intense a lot. It’s my signature scent. If you like the Gentleman Reserve Privee, you might want to check it out.
Spring/summer Carolina Herrera bad boy cobalt elixir Fall/winter Paco Rabanne 1 mill royal, elixirs not bad as well.
I love Bad Boy Cobalt and honestly, I find the regular 1 million to be better than the others, it's a hot take but I just find the spiciness and vanilla notes to be really well combined.
I am also a fan of the EDT over most others in the line. Royal is a close second, followed by Lucky.
Tom Ford Black Orchid
Music Fest/Jazz Club is boozy, leathery, spicy. Bonfire/By The Fireplace is kind of a vanilla/cloves scent.
Rasasi: shuhrah, al-shagaf, hawas. Lattafa: Assad. Al-Haramain: amber oud Aqua dubai
I love Asad, but sometimes it’s too strong 😭 but I like that I can get away with saying I’m wearing DSE when I wear it
I wore it today, just one spray, felt like I probably got 4 or 5 good hours out of it.
How many of you wear cologne and what scent is your favorite? Trying to get some ideas. Late 40's man here.
I like Club de Nuit. They're knockoffs of really popular colognes for like 1/5 the price and smell the same.
I like Sillage, it's a knockoff of Silver Mt Water by Creed. I'm 99% sure the moving company I hired stole my Sillage.
I didn't know this was a thing. Good tip
Really? They're goated. Extremely good fragrances, and pretty close to their original counterparts. Armaf is the brand.
D&G Iight blue is my favorite.
The One by D&G is my favorite.
yo i’ve that one too!.😭😭, feels refreshing!.
Just deodorant, no cologne
Sex Panther by Odeon. Its made with bits of real panther. 60% of the time, it works everytime.
I heard that one smells like big foot’s dick?
The only real man in this thread. I salute you good sir.
Stopped using cologne a long time ago, as it bothered alot of people. Deodorant is enough. Armani Code is my deo of choice.
What are the most popular men’s colognes
Here are some of the most popular men's colognes to consider:
Creed Aventus
Dior Sauvage
Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani
Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de l'Homme
Tom Ford Noir
Paco Rabanne 1 Million
Key Considerations:
Recommendation: If you're looking for versatility, Dior Sauvage is a great choice due to its broad appeal and adaptability for different settings. For a unique signature scent, Creed Aventus is highly regarded, though it comes at a premium price. Always try samples or testers to find what resonates best with you!
