Naruto Filler Episodes: To Watch or Not to Watch

TL;DR

  • Skip most filler episodes for a streamlined experience.
  • Key arcs worth watching: Kakashi's and Itachi's backstories.

Understanding Filler Episodes

Naruto is known for having a significant number of filler episodes, with estimates suggesting that about one-third to 40% of the series is filler [4:1][4:5]. These episodes often do not contribute to the main storyline and can be skipped without missing crucial plot points [2:3].

Recommended Filler Arcs

While most fillers can be skipped, some arcs are recommended for their entertainment value or character development. The Kakashi ANBU arc and Itachi's backstory in "Naruto Shippuden" are frequently mentioned as worthwhile [1:2][3:1]. These arcs provide deeper insights into beloved characters and are considered engaging by many fans.

Filler Lists and Resources

For those looking to skip filler episodes, several resources are available online. Websites like Anime Filler List offer detailed guides on which episodes to skip across the Naruto series [2:1]. Additionally, fan edits like "Naruto Kai" condense the series by removing fillers and unnecessary content [2:2].

Mixed Canon/Filler Episodes

Some episodes contain both canon and filler content. While it's generally safe to skip full filler episodes, mixed episodes might require more attention to ensure you don't miss important story elements [5:2]. It's advisable to consult filler lists that specify mixed content to make informed decisions.

Personal Preferences

Ultimately, whether to watch filler episodes depends on personal preference. Some viewers enjoy the additional content and character interactions provided by fillers, while others prefer to focus solely on the main storyline [3:4][5:3]. If you're new to the series, consider skipping fillers initially and revisiting them later if you desire more content [5:5].

And also if you suggest skipping fillers also do suggest which filler episode I should really skip that won't effect character development and storyline of the anime?

Yes its definatly worth it! Story and character development is amazing. And the characters are so cool and interesting. I suggest skip the fillers. But would reccomend Kakashi and Itachi backstory arcs in Shippuden.

Watch 119-120. 349-361. Covers Kakashi. Watch 451-558. Covers Itachi.

Use a filler list and skip every other filler. But some are cool and I suggest watch them after the show.

Its definitely worth it and you can skip the filler as it will not impact development of characters or plot. As top post mentioned the back stories of kakashi and itachi are worth it.

Another thing to note: Naruto is notorious for flashbacks and replaying the SAME ones to remind you of certain things during some present scene (it'll be like several minutes of flashback not a quick montage) and you can fast forward after you've seen the flashback before if you want.

I’m currently watching it, and haven’t skipped any filler. And to be honest, I think the filler is entirely worth watching if you have the time. If you really like the show, the filler is just more of it, and has some pretty interesting characters and battles. Of course, if you just want the story, then you can skip it without missing any vital information.

100% skip the filler. It will not feel fast paced lmao there are 700 episodes, about 500 of them being canon and some episodes drag. Pretty sure one specific fight is like 5-9 episodes even skipping filler

Some of the fillers are pretty fun to watch. Like “gotta see gotta know, kakashi’s true face” is a really good one. I’d say just watch a little bit of the fillers and if you don’t like it skip em.

There's a fanedit called Naruto Kai that condenses the episodes down into ~1.5 hour long volumes, which cuts out anime-original episodes and filler that exists within canon episodes.

Is it true that Naruto has too much filler episodes?

Posted by glez_fdezdavila_ · in r/Naruto · 4 years ago

I'm told that Naruto has too many filler episodes. I started the anime from 2002 a few days ago and I'm already feeling that, for example, the battle over the bridge against Zbuza I think that took way too long, and this is not stopping me to watch the Anime, but I only want to know if it's real or it's just exagerated for the meme.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike this anime, but the fillers just aren't one of them.

The series is like 40ish percent pure filler episodes, and canon episodes are stretched out to death. Read the manga is my recommendation.

Can we also discuss the flashbacks and recaps?

It makes it impossible to watch. It cuts down on actual content and makes you feel like over half of what you're watching is just wasted screen time.

Are the Naruto fillers really safe to skip?

Posted by MrSaucyAlfredo · in r/Naruto · 7 months ago

I'm going through the series and intend to get to Shippuden when I'm done but Naruto Filler List | The Ultimate Anime Filler Guide states that there's basically almost 3 straight seasons of filler right at the end? Posts I've found online indicate it is all safe to skip with the exception of episode 220. I just wanna double check and be sure before committing, that skipping these won't leave any gaps for Shippuden? Like some power someone learned that comes back or an experience they flashback to or something from a purely filler episode?

Are they fun to watch? Some of them maybe. But it’s filler. It has nothing to tell storywise, nothing manga related. So yes, you are very save to skip them. But only the full filler episodes. There are some mixed canon/filler episodes.

I've watched through Naruto 4 times, including OG and Shipudden, I haven't seen a single episode from those last 3 seasons of OG Naruto lol.

Some of the filler in Shipudden you should definitely watch; the main two being Kakashi's backstory and Itachi's backstory.

Curious what folks thought are on the original series’ fillers?

Posted by Alita_the_lily · in r/Naruto · 4 months ago

I’m rewatching the original series and I know Naruto fillers get a lot of flack (and no doubt there are a few really cringey and kinda hard to watch/haven’t aged well ones) but the bad ones seem to mostly be just single episodes. Idk I kind of enjoying them and in the context of the show I think it does kind of extend things in a nice way. It’s nice too that the filler arcs are only like 7 eps long each so if there is one that’s not great it’s not like it takes much time to finish and move on to the next one. Idk the canon material feels kinda short to me so I’ve kinda felt like the filler gives a bit of a nice buffer before shippuden, and a chance to give some love to less seen characters. There is a lot no doubt about it and none of it is going to be as good as the cannon material, but there are still some cool moment that I’ve definitely enjoyed.

I’m currently finishing up my re-watch of the canon part of OG naruto. I skipped the filler with Ibiki’s brother because it just made no sense to have Sasuke on a mission between his encounter with Itachi and leaving with the sound 4. I’m not sure if I will watch any of the filler before Shippuden.

I’ve never watched all of Shippuden so I’m excited to see some of the filler that expands on the manga

If you are saying filler only lasts 1 to 7 episodes then you are very early days in your rewatch.

Naruto and Shippuden are literally 40% filler.

Yes, there are the occasional single episodes or even minimal episode sections of filler that are pretty good. But in my opinion the filler completely ruined the pacing of the series as a whole.

The end of Naruto is when it really gets bad. There's like 70 episodes straight filler after the Sasuke retrieval arc.

Then in Shippuden basically every other arc is filler. And they aren't just up to seven episodes. There are like 20 to 40 episodes of filler at a time.

3 upvotes on reddit
Alita_the_lily · OP · 4 months ago

No I was saying the arcs are only 1-7 I know that towards the end of the series there is a block of like 64 episodes of nothing but filler. But each arc within is only max 7 episodes so if one arc sucks it’s not like it’s a huge chunk. I definitely think the amount of filler stretched on too long so I get where you are coming from pacing wise. And like I said this is a rewatch so I was aware of this. I’m going to rewatch shippuden too but I’ll be honest it’s been a while since I’ve seen that so I don’t remember the filler situation there that’s why I was primarily just talking about originally series

2 upvotes on reddit
S
SaiyajinPrime · 4 months ago

Oh I knew what you meant. Yeah, I agree in the original series, the filler isn't as egregious until the end of the series.

But then Shippuden does pretty much every other arc of filler.

2 upvotes on reddit
cazador_de_sirenas · 4 months ago

There's a ton of fillers, so just by statistics, some were good and some were bad. Personally, I enjoyed most of them because they expanded on characters' background or contributed to the world-building.

2 upvotes on reddit
Alita_the_lily · OP · 4 months ago

That’s definitely how I felt too! I think by the nature of filler it’s never going to be as good as canon content when there are no stakes considering everything has to be back to normal for when the canon starts again, but it can still be done well enough to be somewhat enjoyable

There will be the odd time that you meet a character, or hear characters reference events that you won't recognize if you skip the filler, but I personally don't think it'll take away from your viewing experience more than watching the filler would.

There are some filler arcs that are legitimately worth watching, but personally I'd watch the main series first and only watch the good filler on a rewatch. It's not worth it unless you already have an attachment to the Narutoverse and the characters within it.

I watched the entire Naruto anime probably more than 10x already... hahaha.. Including the filler episodes.. Sometimes they just play in the background while I do other important stuff.

Since it's your first time, perhaps skip em' so that you'll get the important stuff only first.

But watch em' next time.. there's some fun fillers in there. My fave is the one with Kakashi's mask, mission of Naruto and Shino, and Ichiraku Ramen mission. These fillers are so funny.. hehe

Some people love to watch everything, but most people skip all fillers and only watch ep 101; it is a fun ep.

There are also mixed filler/canon eps in OG Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, like:
OG Naruto: eps 136 to 142 (have some canon scenes) and ep 220 where the second half is canon.
Shippuden: ep 71 (end of the ep), ep 90, ep 112 and ep 179 (the beginning).

This post has some good filler suggestions to watch and will tell you how to watch some of the mixed eps

https://www.reddit.com/r/Naruto/comments/k2lsxi/ultimate_guide_to_watch_naruto/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Here are more good fillers suggestion:
For OG Naruto: If you're interested in Anko's backstory, then watch OG Naruto filler episodes 169 to 173.
For Shippuden: watch eps 176 to 178, ep 234 and ova7 (after ep 256).
Some of the movies are decent too

Make sure to watch them only after you finish all canon eps before them

When an anime/manga is good, normally the filler episodes are good too and add interesting content to the story. Especially relating to character development.

And some are just entertaining/funny and actually enjoyable to watch.

For reference

For Naruto Part 1, watch up to episode 135, then episode 220(last half of the episode, the first part is half filler). Ideally watch some episodes in between.

For Shippuden here are the filler episodes(I’ll recommend certain episodes)

57-71(must watch)

91-112(must watch)

144-151(must watch)

170-171(dont need to watch )

176-196(recommend watch the first 4 episodes of these, also 190 is also a really good episode)

223-242(don’t need to see, but some episodes are funny, especially 241)

257-260( recap of Part 1)

279-281(part of the overall arc that is happening, 281 is important to watch to understand the Will Of Fire(if you don’t understand yet that’s fine))

284-289(don’t need to watch, but helps with worldbuilding)

290-295(Power Arc, think a movie split into 6 episodes, doesn’t relate with the arc that happens after these episodes)

303-320(part of the episodes on the overall arc, I recommend 318 and 320)

347-361(a must see arc)

389-390(dont need to watch)

394-413(don’t need to watch)

416(it helps the surrounding by episodes)

422-423(episodes that shows how a certain character did something)

427-450(I recommend to see 427-431 to better understand certain characters, the rest is optional but watching it will also help you understand certain character dynamics)

464-469(helps you the viewer understand character dynamics)

480-483(look backs into the lives of popular characters)

The dont need to watch episodes aren’t necessary but recommended as they can explain small character dynamics. Anything not listed here is too be watched.

AI Answer

what episodes of naruto are filler

Key Considerations for Naruto Filler Episodes:

  1. Filler Episodes: These are episodes that do not contribute to the main storyline and are often created to give the manga time to progress.

  2. Total Filler Count: In the original Naruto series, there are filler episodes that make up about 40% of the total episodes.

  3. Filler Lists: It's helpful to refer to a comprehensive list to identify which episodes to skip if you want to focus solely on the main plot.

Filler Episodes in Naruto (Original Series):

  • Episodes 136-220 are primarily filler.
  • Notable filler arcs include:
    • The Land of Snow (Episodes 81-85)
    • The Search for Tsunade (Episodes 81-83)
    • The Bounty Hunter (Episodes 196-197)
    • The Konoha Sports Festival (Episodes 222-224)

Recommendation: If you want to enjoy the main storyline without filler, consider watching only the episodes from 1-135 and then jumping to 221 onward in the original series. For a more streamlined experience, you might also consider watching "Naruto: Shippuden," which has significantly fewer filler episodes.
