Resources in the Lost River in Subnautica

Magnetite and Other Minerals

The Lost River is known for its abundance of various resources, although magnetite can be somewhat elusive. Magnetite is present in the Lost River, particularly in areas with green "fog" or brine [1:1], but it is more commonly found in the Jellyshroom Caves [1:9]. In addition to magnetite, the Lost River contains large drillable deposits of other valuable materials such as nickel, which is unique to this biome and essential for progression in the game [5:1].

Drillable Deposits

For players equipped with a Prawn Suit, the Lost River offers numerous drillable resource nodes. These include rare materials that are crucial for crafting advanced equipment. It's recommended to bring a Prawn Suit with a drill arm to make the most of these opportunities [2:2], [3:2].

Navigational Tips and Hazards

Exploring the Lost River requires caution due to the presence of Ghost Leviathans, which pose a significant threat. Players are advised to stay close to walls to avoid encounters with these predators [2:8]. Additionally, the complex layout of the Lost River can be challenging to navigate, so having a well-prepared vehicle and understanding of the terrain is beneficial.

Additional Resources and Preparation

Besides minerals, the Lost River does not provide many consumables, so it's wise to bring ample food and water supplies, such as a melon farm or extra water bottles [5:4]. Power management is also crucial; bringing extra power cells for your Cyclops is recommended since recharging options are limited until deeper resources are accessed [4:5].

Strategic Exploration

While the Lost River is rich in resources, strategic exploration is key. Building an outpost or scanner room near the entrance can help manage resources and facilitate deeper exploration [4:2]. The area is also home to alien technology sites, which are integral to the game's storyline and progression [2:6].

ORIGINAL POST

I thought there were more resources. I'm still having the hardest time finding magnetites. I was hoping for Lost River. Or, could it be I missed something? Don't get me wrong, I was able to fill up, both perfsonal inventory plus seamoth with lots of stuff. I just thought it'd be more abundant.

There are magnetites in the lost River, they were just hiding under the river sulphur. Not a whole whole lot, but it is there

Go to jellyshroom caves. If you want to find by lost river go to the tree that is in between the lost rover and lava zone that has a bunch of see through string rays swimming around. Look for a blue and pink tree with blue mist, inside the blue mist on floor you should be able to find 1-3 magnetite deposits

EmotionalSnow2000 · 18 days ago

Hehe, you can still find it in the lost river, just easier in the shroom cave

Bondubras · 19 days ago

Magnetite is mainly in the jellyshroom caves. I'm not 100% on if it's only found in those caves, but at the bare minimum, the vast majority will require you to dodge crabsnakes.

Silvaria928 · 19 days ago

It definitely isn't found only in those caves. There's a hill between the southwestern Blood Kelp Zone and the Sea Treader's Path that has magnetite on it, if I recall correctly.

Go deeper! Magnetite is easier found at the Jellyshroom caves, in my experience. Build a scanner room just above them.

Yes, lots of magnetite in the Jellyshroom cave.

You need a scanner room with the HUD upgrade, and if I remember correctly, you can stack 3 distance upgrades with it

There are also very large deposits that you need a drill to collect; do you have the drill yet?

Some of the trees have cage-like root systems which you can hide in when a certain large predator is trying to have you for dinner. They can't get through the narrow spaces. Scanning/stabbing time :)

Prawn suit with drill, grappling and torpedo if that's your style when you feel threatened. The game will require you to go deeper so try to upgrade depth module for your suit as soon as you can.

That area in the Lost River is rich with large drillable deposits, but pretty lean on magnetite. Best place for magnetite is the Jellyshroom cave, lots of loose magnetite deposits and a few large drillable deposits. Also the thermal vents in the Mountains biome by the QEP have a lot of loose deposits.

Unless you're building a lot of something that uses it, you generally don't need that much for the game. A load from the Jellyshroom cave should cover it.

If you look around just past the entrance from the northwest blood kelp forest there's a scattering of it in the shallow water. It's interspersed with lithium and sulfur. Tbf it is present throughout the lost river but from my observations the most concentrated area is by that entrance. But the easiest place to obtain it is in the jelly shroom caves.

I feel like I am missing something. Am I going too fast into the deep?

I got a grappling hook/drill arm prawn suit BTW. I also own a cyclop, but I can't recharge it.

Edit: I finally got the power cell recharger. And oh god, I can't believe I transversed the Lost River without reinforced suit. That shit is a game changer.

By the time you have to go to the lost river, you should have the blueprints. There are some resources like nickel and, farther down, kyanite. But you should have the blueprints already. Keep exploring the areas you can reach. To recharge the Cyclops, you need to recharge its energy cells with a charger. You need blueprints for that.

Do you have a checklist for necessary blueprints?

The far best experience of rhe game is to find it yourself. It's not forbidden ofc to ask for it, but most Subnautica-lovees will tell you this. Keep exploring. Wreckages and Aurora/bases etc.

Just to clarify. When you say you cannot recharge Cyclops, while there is a module for charging, the materials can only be found much deeper. You have to rely on power cell chargers until you get that.

If you don’t have the blueprint for power cell chargers you should go find it. If you don’t have the materials for a power cell charger you should go find them.

All of the Aurora wreckage and fragments lands in places consistent with landing in the water and sinking to the bottom (perhaps rolling into a cave). If you want to find that wreckage, you'll have to go far and wide, not deep.

I recomend bringing a melon farm or ALOT of water, as far as I know theres no source of it down there, also extra Cyclops power crlls

2 upvotes on reddit
GreatSeaBattle · 4 years ago

I mean, you don't need the stasis rifle, I didn't even use it until after I'd beaten the game. Propulsion is technically optional but it's convenient for getting your Prawn unstuck and for exploring somewhere else.

So what's in the lost river? Basically everything. Nearly every material is available down there and it is awesome, but you're going to need the Prawn's drill to access most of it. It's also the only biome with nickel, which will eventually be important. Oh, there's also ghost leviathans, so yeah, be ready to dodge those.

As for what to bring? Prawn with a drill at minimum, but it's a lot more convenient if you shuttle it around in a Cyclops. You just need to get that Cyclops past the ghost. A shield generator helps a lot. Sonar isn't needed but it's real nice for the upcoming areas. You'll also want material to do some building, all the stuff down there will need to go in lockers. Once you start going deeper than the lost river, carry that propulsion cannon around, just in case.

Yeah, all of it. Reapers stay up top (except the ones that get dragged into the depths and eaten by >!sea dragons!<).

In the lost river, you only have to contend with 3 juvenile ghost leviathans, and they're spread way out and not too hard to avoid.

Pretty much where I put it.

Lost River isn’t the end game, but it’s at the door steps of it. Obviously you can only go a lil deeper

But you could feasibly go there fairly early if you made that choice. But I think most average players first time there they are likely nearing the end of their first play through

Late game. People who say mid game are bonkers. There is like…. 5% of the game’s content after Lost River. It’s cool content. But it’s still very speedable. No voice logs. No pdas. No survivors.

Having just finished a hardcore run, I think 5% is a bit of an exaggeration. I'd say a solid 30% of my hardcore game was based in my secondary, Ghost Tree base - my main base for all endgame content.

Granted, it was hardcore mode, so I did a good chunk of careful exploration down there, but still. There's a good amount of story there, it's just more you-focused. Thermal plant + the lava lakes and the emperor means lots of back and forth from surface to the PCF. I think if you speed through it sure, it's fast, but I'd argue you can speed through a lot of the beginning of the game in a similar way!

First time I found myself there I was somewhere about 2-3. That was a lot of fun. There quite by accident, under equipped, and kept prodding in and out scanning things and collecting resources then running away again.

Subsequent playthroughs I'd agree with your numbering.

I think you underestimate things in the game that aren’t physical space. In terms of crafting, story, biome diversity, discoveries, logs, and flora/fauna documentation…. The remaining game after the lost river is reskinned fauna, lizards, kyanite, a two short alien facilities, sea dragons, and…. Yeah. It’s a lot of open space. But not much there to do or explore.

It is a good idea to build a base somewhere in the Lost River. And yes, everything you need can be found down there. Here are some tips and tricks I wish I knew before I ventured down there myself.

  1. The easiest entrance for a cyclops is in the northeast between the bulb zone and the mountains. It is plenty wide for a cyclops. There is one juvenile ghost leviathan along the path, but once you sneak past it, you won’t ever have to face it again. The other entrances are doable but it will be a tight squeeze for the cyclops.

  2. I consider the Tree Cove to be a prime spot for a base. The area is blue, you’ll know it when you see it. It is safe, pretty, and close to the Inactive Lava Zone. And there are plenty of resources around.

  3. Make sure your prawn suit is equipped with a drill arm. Most minerals in the Lost River large deposits that need to be mined. It is also a good idea to equip a grappling arm or at least bring one along, as it helps you move more quickly in the prawn suit.

  4. There are some items you should consider bringing to the Lost River that can only be found on the surface, or are just difficult to find down there. Bring creepvines and blood oil to plant in outdoor grow beds (for lubricant if needed and benzene). Table coral samples (several base components require these). Stalker teeth if you want to make enameled glass. Any kind of seed you want to grow (I always grow Marblemelons in my bases). And if you’ve found any ion cubes or alien tablets, definitely bring those.

  5. If you haven’t already, make a growbed or two in your cyclops and fill it with Marblemelons. They are a great source of both food and water and will keep you alive while you get your main base set up as long as you keep replaying the seeds.

8 upvotes on reddit
Agent37586 · 2 years ago

Agreed with all of this except for table coral - you can find that down there too. Only things you can't find down there are creepvines (seed clusters for lubricant), blood kelp (blood oil for benzene) and acid mushrooms (batteries/power cells).

My main base is in the junction, that or the tree are great places to build. You can find plenty of the minerals down there, but it's kinda annoying having to head up every time for some of the basic resources. Overall, it's a pretty nice place to build and I recommend it.

Epicswordmewz · 2 years ago

If like me, you're too lazy to plant things, creepvine and acid mushrooms are a 5 minute trip. Also, most of the corals can't be planted afaik, although there is some table coral down there, but some need a surface trip for that.

1 upvotes on reddit
ManiacDan · 2 years ago

There's a couple of items that you'll need to bring down with you, notably the Creepvines and purple gel sacks. I love making my second base in one of three locations (all of which have thermal vents):

- By the big tree where the blue "water" starts.

- Near the waterfalls by the big skeleton in the middle area.

- By the large structure in the lost river, between it and the eastern entrance.

The tree is the most important thing in terms of proximity, but by the time you're moving to the river you have plenty of experience zipping around. Watch your depth, the seamoth can never go past the tree.

I don’t want to spoil anything for you but the blue area is a great base area, I love to build there, also there is plenty of resources down there but a prawn suit is needed for most of it for the drill.

The safest imo is blood kelp zone

beksh2505 · 2 years ago

Well the tree is the best option then, you can put some nice thermal generators and grow beds. Safe and easy to access any area. The blood kelp zone is the best option as although it is smaller it can still fit a cyclops and it has no reapers in the beginning

Key Resources in the Lost River:

  1. Ion Cubes:

    • Used for crafting advanced technology and powering certain devices.
    • Found in various locations, often near alien structures.
  2. Kyanite:

    • A blue crystalline resource used for crafting high-tier equipment and upgrades.
    • Found on the walls and floors of the Lost River.

  5. Sulfur:

Additional Considerations:

  • Creature Encounters: Be cautious of hostile creatures like the Ghost Leviathan and the Warper that inhabit the Lost River.
  • Navigation: The Lost River is a complex area with multiple paths; consider marking your route or using beacons to avoid getting lost.
  • Resources for Base Building: The Lost River is a good location for gathering materials to build a base, especially if you plan to explore deeper biomes.

Recommendation:

Make sure to equip your Seamoth or Prawn Suit with upgrades for better navigation and protection, as the Lost River can be challenging to traverse. Always keep an eye on your oxygen levels and have a plan for escape if you encounter aggressive creatures.
