What Redditors are Saying

Location and Availability of Leviathan Eggs in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Leviathan eggs are mostly non-interactive props.
  • Sea Emperor and Sea Dragon eggs are present but not collectible.
  • Reefback eggs can be spawned using console commands.

Leviathan Egg Types and Locations

In Subnautica, there are several types of leviathan eggs mentioned, but most are not interactable or collectible. The Sea Emperor Leviathan eggs are part of the storyline and can be found in a precursor base, but they cannot be moved or hatched by the player [2:1]. Similarly, Sea Dragon Leviathan eggs are visible in the game but remain non-interactive [2:1].

Reefback Leviathan Eggs

Reefback Leviathan eggs do not naturally spawn in the game world for collection. They exist as a model that was likely intended to be used but were ultimately not included in the gameplay. Players can use console commands to spawn these eggs if desired, although this will disable achievements [1:3], [5:7]. Some players mistakenly believe they have found them in the wild, but this is not supported by the game's mechanics [5:10].

Ghost Leviathan Eggs

Ghost Leviathan eggs appear in the Lost River biome, specifically at the Tree Cove, where they are part of the environment but cannot be collected or interacted with [2:2], [5:5]. These eggs serve more as a visual element rather than a functional item within the game.

Other Leviathans and Misconceptions

Some creatures like the Squidshark and Glow Whale in Subnautica: Below Zero are sometimes mistaken for leviathans due to their size, but they are not classified as such in the original Subnautica game [3:1]. Additionally, there is confusion about the existence of Reaper Leviathan eggs, which do not exist in the game either through normal play or cheats [4:1].

Overall, while leviathan eggs are an intriguing aspect of Subnautica's lore, their role is largely limited to environmental storytelling rather than interactive gameplay elements.

Not sure if this works in BZ as I just started playing it but it was true in the first game. You can use hatched leviathans to push wild leviathans to the opposite side of the zone, essentially altering their route.

So let's say you want to build in an area where other leviathans roam but you don't want them near your base you can put alien containment there and a leviathan class creature, in this case a squidshark, and the algorithm registers a leviathan in the area and it will cause the wild leviathans to stay away.

In the first game I built in the LR on the edge of the ghost leviathan path, placed a crabsquid in a containment and I never saw the ghost again. I would run through the LR in my cyclops full noise and never be bothered.

Can anyone confirm this works in BZ? I started to test it yesterday but fell asleep before I could get all the materials needed to build. I should be able to finish it tonight if no one else confirms.

That´s weird. Anyways the only "ownable" leviathan in BZ is glow whale.

2 upvotes on reddit
I
Ippus_21 · 2 months ago

Kinda.

Basically if you can grow it in your containment, you can keep it in there as a pet, or release it outside and it'll be non-hostile.

Just be aware that:

  • True leviathans (chelicerates, shadow, iceworms, ventgardens) don't have eggs you can pick up. I'm not going to weigh in on whether or not squidsharks or glow whales count as actual leviathans.
  • Some creatures are hazardous to have near your base/vehicles even if they're not hostile to you directly.

Might I recommend glow whales? They're really big, and completely chill, and they make cool sounds. You can even grab onto the big wild ones and ride them for a bit. Eggs are kind of a pain to find (check the tops of some of the floating rocks in the lily pads).

I wish there were eggs for those eye jellies (which I think are the juvenile form of ventgardens? That may just be headcanon--nah, I looked it up. Juvenile ventgardens are similar free-swimming things, not the same as eye jellies).

82 upvotes on reddit
Spider1928 · 2 months ago

The eye jellies do have (very abundant) eggs, and they’re a completely different species from the vent gardens. You can actually find juvenile vent gardens by the mercury wreck at the delta island

Eye jellies do have eggs! They’re in the eastern entrance to the underground tunnel from the west arctic to the glacial basin. If you start from the glacial basin dock, head south while hugging the wall and you should see the entrance about where the eye jelly population is most concentrated

You didn't realize? Wild. Yeah, it even says so in the PDA entry if you scan them. They park themselves over thermal vents in their sessile adult form and use the vent to supply energy and nutrients.

Also, 2? there are a lot more than 2. There's a whole biome full of them, WSW of the lily pads.

Command: [item reefbackegg] It's the only hatchable leviathan egg in the game >!(not counting Sea Emperor Eggs)!< It looks the same as the Spadefish egg, but it's much larger. You can hatch in your "aquarium" and get a mini version of Juvenile Reefback. The egg takes about five in-game days to hatch and juvenile won't grow up even if you let it swim in the ocean.

1 upvotes on reddit
Detonatress · 5 years ago

So it stays a tiny version of a juvenile reefback? Sounds like it would make an adorable pet to keep around the base. Too bad the devs didn't officially allow this.

1 upvotes on reddit
Illuminati_132 · 5 years ago

It was an actual in-game feature. It was removed somewhere along the way. And just to clear any doubts you may have: they don't grow larger than other fish in containment, but if you set it free, it will instantly change its size. They shouldn't despawn, but they shouldn't be able to grow up.

Not through normal gameplay.

You can use console commands to spawn them in and yes, they do hatch and work fine without glitches. The command is "item reefbackegg". Just don't release them near your base.

They are small and don't cause any issues inside the containment. Here are two images of them:

I'm pretty sure the reason they were removed is because of the potential to have a full grown Reefback stuck in your base after you release it . Release creatures grow to full size after a while.

You can hatch reefbacks in containment chambers, but the egg is only obtainable through console commands. The command is "item reefbackegg". For some reason the reefback egg was cut from the game, despite the codes clearly being there to do it.

Or at least, so I have heard, and as is supported here: https://subnautica.fandom.com/wiki/Cut_Content_(Subnautica)#Reefback_Leviathan_Egg. Never tried it myself though, so I guess it could be a hoax.

I think it would be fun to have at least one leviathan that’s so big you don’t see it for what it is, until there is some big realization. Like maybe there’s this cool biome that has all these great resources, and then you realize there’s a big eyeball looking at you, and the whole ground moves…

A leviathan that is not too big but stealthy and sensitive to light in a very dark biome. A leviathan thats sensitive to sound thats guarding an important resource. Leviathans that can work together to destroy your large vessel or maybe just to hunt and trap you. A very large and very slow leviathan that can finish you in one hit.

Where are leviathan eggs in subnautica

In Subnautica, Leviathan eggs can be found in specific locations throughout the game. Here are the key locations to look for them:

  1. Sea Treader's Path:

    • Look for the Sea Treader Leviathan eggs in the grassy areas along the path. They are often found near the large Sea Treader creatures.
  2. Lost River:

    • In the Lost River biome, you can find Leviathan eggs near the large skeletons and in the deeper areas. Pay attention to the environment as you explore.
  3. Crater Edge:

    • Eggs can also be located near the edge of the crater in the deeper regions. This area is less explored, so be cautious of hostile creatures.
  4. Ghost Tree:

    • Near the Ghost Tree in the Lost River, you may find Leviathan eggs nestled among the roots and surrounding structures.

Key Takeaways:

  • Leviathan eggs are typically found in biomes where Leviathans are present.
  • They are often located near large structures or in areas with significant flora.
  • Be cautious of hostile creatures while searching for eggs.

Recommendation: Use a Seamoth or Prawn Suit for protection and mobility while exploring these areas, as they can be dangerous. Make sure to have adequate oxygen supplies and be prepared for encounters with aggressive fauna.
