Popular Gimbap Chains
Several popular gimbap chains in Seoul are worth trying out. Kimgane, Bareuda Kimseonsaeng, and Ko Bongmin Gimbapin are some of the most well-known places for gimbap [1:1]. These chains offer a variety of gimbaps that are highly recommended by locals and visitors alike.
Local Recommendations
For those looking for a more local experience, exploring smaller shops and eateries might be the way to go. Many people fondly remember small shops that sell gimbap alongside other Korean favorites like ramen and tteokbokki [2:3]
[2:1]. These spots often provide fast, cheap, and delicious meals that capture the essence of everyday Korean dining.
Neighborhood Favorites
While not specifically focused on gimbap, exploring different neighborhoods can lead you to some hidden gems. For example, Yongsan and Mapo/Hongdae have unique food offerings that include traditional Korean dishes [5]. While these areas may not be known solely for gimbap, they offer a rich culinary experience that could include excellent gimbap options.
Mr. Kimbob
Although primarily known for bibimbap, Mr. Kimbob is mentioned as a favorite spot by several users [3:1]
[3:5]. Their focus on quality ingredients and taste makes it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring Korean cuisine, including gimbap.
Additional Tips
When searching for the best gimbap, consider visiting areas with high foot traffic or near tourist attractions, as these locations often host a variety of restaurants catering to diverse tastes. Additionally, asking locals for recommendations can lead you to lesser-known spots that serve exceptional gimbap.
I visited 3 popular gimbap places in Seoul - Kimgane, Bareuda Kimseonsaeng and Ko Bongmin Gimbapin. I tried their best selling gimbaps so if you have ever wondered which is the best gimbap to have in Korea, check out the video!
Tteokbokki and gimbap
Dipping kimbap in tteokbokki is the best!
God I miss those little shops that sell gimbap and ramen. It’s been nearly a decade since I lived in Korea, and those are one of the things I miss most. Fast, cheap, and delicious. I wish we had them in the states.
They are picking up popularity in southern California. A bunch of HMarts and Zion (korean supermarkets) now have food courts that sell street style food and there's even a restaurant opening near me that will serve on street stall style food. Maybe this would be closer for you?
There’s an H-mart near me. The food court’s nice, but not quite the same feel as those little shops.
The holy trio: jajangmyeon, tangsooyook, and jjamppong. Throw in some mandu too 😋
Welp…. I know what I’m doing in NY Koreatown tomorrow
The best!
This is the answer and I’m very happy to see it on top
When are we hanging out?
LA Galbi + Naengmyeon
Kimchi Jjigae + spam and bap
Oh fuck me up with that combo!
I love mr kimbob kahit ang onti ng meat ang sarap pa rin talaga. Bonchon medyo okay pwede na rin
Sana magkaroon na sila ng own delivery fleet/courier or Grabfood. Meron na ba for online orders?
Love this, though I usually get double meat!
Mr. Kimbob, sulit na sulit kasi

Hello Marriottistas , iam palnning to spend few weeks in Seoul South Korea, i checked and found like 20 hotel. What is your best experience there titanium or ambassador + mmp. Iam considering 3 options: 1-the courtyard 2- the Jw because when you book a suite at one of the above 2,they offer you free breakfast, mid day snack and late night snack ( any one knows about those snacks) 3- the marriott executive apartments for the kitchen and space. Any recommendation plz. Thank you
I live in Seoul. We normally think JW Marriott Seoul(located in Gangnam area) is the best. But the price is high. Also, in general, in South Korea Marriott hotels, you should not expect any room upgrade because in my country there are so many titanium, ambassador members. Even I am not sure if you can get late checkout.
How about The Westin Josun? It looks to be closer to some tourism landmarks like Gwanghwamun Square.
The Westin Josun Seoul is also a nice luxury hotel. Especially famous for delicious breakfast. In Seoul, most tourism landmarks are located nearby. Gwanghwamun is a old huge gate of ancient palace. If you re going to visit those tourists spots, the westin josun seoul is a nice choice. The only problem is the price. If you are going to visit the south parts of Seoul(Gangnam area), JW marriotts Seoul is the best. Courtyard is .. just okay. But it's definitely not luxury hotel.
I am only gold and stayed at the JW a few weeks back. I got late checkout no problem I think they gave me until 2pm. Very nice place with lots of shopping and subway station below it.
Thanks for your recommendation, normally i dont wait till they give me upgrade, i Insist , and i check availabaliy of suites … and i never accept first upgrade offer they offer me if i dont like it, i am a bit demmamding.. especually when they get gready , also my best tool is to negociate the upgrade on chat even before checkin.
Thats the spirit, especially when traveling on MMP.
The JW Gangnam is my go-to. Great location plus the Flavors buffet is awesome.
If you want to splurge, the Josun Palace is really nice, as well as good location too.
One hotel I’d warn you away from is the Four Points Gangnam. The hotel itself is perfectly nice. However the road by it (Dosan Daero) is apparently the de-facto racetrack for all of Gangnam’s supercar owners and you’ll hear them revving loudly and gunning it all night, every night, into the wee hours of the morning - even from the upper floors. I guess the soundproofing is extremely poor despite being a new building.
I once stayed at JW Marriott dongdaemoon. Location is fanstastic, direct subway entrance from the hotel, across the street from the market, ddp, etc. I think I was a platinum back then, with MMP and was not given access to the mclub lounge. However, when I booked another hotel reservation with points for my girlfriends to stay, the second room came with club lounge access. I thought it was weird, but that was our experience.
Forget option 3 - .. with kitchen. Please enjoy Korean food delivery (i am not talking about Hotel room service)
Also iam considering marriott executive apartments for these reasons:
I love Korean food man! From Kimchi to bimbimpan to the meat that you cook yourself… all delicous, but sometimes u need a healthy plate at home, had i have been traveling a lot and spending lots of time in hotels and eating outside …
I'd go for Courtyard. They have lounge in Asia and the price is usually on the lower end.

Been to Seoul a couple of times so I wanted to drop a list of my favorite eats by neighborhood - mostly Korean spots and a few that are totally worth the wait. Hope it helps! I would to receive recommendations too!
📍Yongsan
📍Mapo / Hongdae
📍Jongno
📍Jung-gu
📍Itaewon / Hannam-dong
📍Changshin Station
📍Seongsu / Ddukseom
📍Sinsa
📍Jamsil
📍Sillim
📍Mullae
📍Seoul National University Station
You might want to skip Bukchon Dodam, 24-Hour Bone Gamjatang, and Odeng Sikdang since their menus are mostly spicy :)
How many restaurants have you been to? I.e. what percent are "must go" versus ok-to-go or don't go?
I’ve been to over 50 restaurants, and for this list, I tried selecting 1–2 favorites from each area :)
Great list! Unfortunately, only some of the links work - others are not valid, it seems.
Thank you for letting me know! I just fixed the links :) hopefully all of them work now
following!
Great list! Maybe this helps once you’re there - it’s a Ordering Helper for Korea I’m building, maybe it helps: https://www.menu-please.app/
Bon Juk - This is a chain but the quality of their bibimbap is great and it's great for solo diners. Its like the subway of bibimbap but way better
Any sundae gukbap place - I tried four places and the one that stood out the most was Cheongwaok Euljiro 3 Ga Branch. It had much more blood sausages and slices of meat.
Ssak Ssak Bibimbap (great to eat at after going to the yangjae flower market). Family run by a sweet husband, wife, and daughter. They really cut their ingredients evently and each item is so carefully prepared. Even the sliced cucumbers are so perfect. Honestly I would give this place a michelin star if I could.
Imo Restaurant - at off hours the samgyetang was really good. I was scared the chicken would be dry but it was not. They don't let you eat alone for anything else but that dish. When you hear old korean music playing in the background in the kitchen you know that food gonna be good.
What’s the address for Ssak Ssak? My partner loves a good bibimbap and we haven’t had the chance to have one yet while here..
I think it’s this place? It’s a bit off though, and you can definitely find bibimbap places more closely to where you’re staying

if you like flowers i HIGHLY suggest going to the yangjae flower market its HUGE and smells so good. even if you don't buy any (which I did not) I enjoyed walking through and seeing all the different vendors. The bibimbap is family run and adorable and served with a smile, recommend over going to it. Then you can walk around the Yangjae area (citizens forest) for the most serene walk (compared to the other parks Ive been to here)and ending it at Cafe Moho
I was in Seoul for a week on holiday, eating alone is not a problem! So much to choose from...!!
I think maybe it's because Im really small they think I can't finish food and reject me
They crossed their arms age said no no. I said but I will buy two dinner. Two. No no. Very petite and a senior. I had a great time but it was very very challenging to eat alone.
Why is that a big deal? I have only been refused at a single restaurant in my time in Korea. Doesn't seem like an issue to eat out alone.
Same! I was so concerned before traveling and safe to say, one single time I was sent away. For some dishes I had to pay a premium when they were meant to be group meals for others I could've probably just pay for 2 but decided to eat something meant for one person.
It’s not so much refuse as “confusing”‘ I’d say. I lived in Korea for over a decade so kinda get it. For example, I love kamjatang, but I never really crave it alone. It’s a communal meal because it’s too big. There is always ppyeohaejangguk which is similar but I don’t crave that often.
Jjimdalk and dalkgalbi are other meals I love but never crave them alone. My brain I guess just associates them with eating with someone.
On the rare occasion when it’s a restaurant in rural Korea and not many options, I just ask if they have 1 person options or look at the menu. It’s rly obvious.
I get nearly no visitors can read Korean, but it’s not malicious to be “refused,” the request to be served a 2 person meal by yourself feels kind of absurd. It’s like if you go to a restaurant and order a whole turkey by yourself. Even if you’re willing to pay, the request itself is kinda weird and with no take out culture, it’s a lot of waste.
Sorry this was in Seoul I forgot to put in the title*
Its easier to make a list where you cant eat alone.
no it is not, not in my experience
What I miss the most about Korea were def the highway stop food courts!
There are so incredible foods at highway stop food courts!I miss it too... I wish this covid-9 virous situation is over...
That looks sooo good!
This is making me hungry
yum
It was Korea Year day last week, And we had lunch at Korea Highway Rest Area Great food, Great place!
r/KoreanFoodVideos - Korea Highway Rest Area Great food, Great place
Goddamn I love gimbap. All day everyday.
For the love of god drop the location pls 🥺🥺
My wife picked it up from her church group in LA (St. Basil's Parish)
Church kimbap can definitely hit
Thank you ❤️
The Korean church food are legit !!!
Gimbap > sushi
What about onigiri?
I got the joke.
Oh man, I don't know if I could ever pick!
Good ratio of filling to 밥. Also username is ace
✌️✋✊
This is mini/ggo-ma gimbap (꼬마김밥 = little one gimbap), more commonly called ma-yak gimbap (마약김밥 = narcotic gimbap). The rolls by themselves are good, mostly due to the liberal amount of toasted sesame oil brushed on the seaweed wrapper, but what makes them addictive is the hot mustard and vinegar sauce that comes with the rolls.
p.s. I love Gwang-jang Market. The bin-dae-ddeok is one of my favorite things to eat, ever, and Gwang-jang Market is definitely my favorite place to eat it. A couple bowls of makgeolli aren't optional.
Am I the only one who found Gwang Jang market really underwhelming? Not to be a party pooper, but IMO Gwang Jang market really just felt like a tourist trap to me. Most of the stalls are basic carbon copies of one another, trying to capitalize on each others' fame. Prices are relatively high for what you get. It seems like there are more unique markets in places that don't attract as many tourists.
I guess it depends on your expectations about the experience and how much you like the types of foods at the market. I've thoroughly enjoyed it every time I've gone, but YMMV and that's ok. Sincerely, I'd like to know if you feel there are better traditional food markets in South Korea. I'm asking very sincerely, because I do enjoy these types of markets, the entire experience, and would like to go to the best ones in the country.
You are not alone. Also, I much prefer the bindaetteok near Nagwon Arcade to the ones at Gwang Jang. And it is certainly not relaxing to eat there.
It was almost closing time when I went there but indeed there were a lot of stalls selling the same stuff.
Its kinda random. It used to be the worst when we were poor because the main protein was put in the middle of the Kimbab meaning that the ends had nothing but lettuce and vegetables. But nowadays we can afford more meat so the loose ends end up having more meat then the other pieces. Also the ratios are completely random so that adds to the fun.
What kind of kimbap would like?
A whole fried chicken with a few cucumber and carrots please
Coming right up.
The soju!
I agree. The best bit of gimbap is the soju!
That’s usually the “cook’s piece” which is why you hardly ever see it in a roll of kimbap, the one who makes it gets the ends!
Even at home. I always cut and eat the ends before I bring to the table. Pretend there are no poorly rolled.or filled pieces. Makes everything look better and neate makes me happy.
The things you learn on Reddit, thanks for sharing!
Everyone knows the kkongdari is the best part
love kkodari
obviously!
