TL;DR
Affordable Options for Men
Several discussions highlight affordable options for men's business professional clothing. Banana Republic Factory Store is frequently recommended for its reasonable prices and stylish offerings [1:1],
[4:1]. J. Crew Factory is another popular choice, especially during sales
[1:3],
[2:2]. Charles Tyrwhitt offers good quality shirts at discounted prices online
[1:4],
[1:8]. For budget-friendly dress shirts and pants, stores like Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Winners are recommended
[1:6],
[4:6].
Affordable Options for Women
For women's business professional attire, H&M is praised for its affordable and stylish options [3:1],
[3:6]. J. Crew Factory provides significant discounts on clearance items, making it a great option for budget-conscious shoppers
[3:2]. Loft and Zara also offer good deals on business casual attire
[3:2],
[3:3]. Surprisingly, Costco has been mentioned as a source of affordable business casual clothing
[3:4].
Thrift Stores and Tailoring
Thrift stores are a valuable resource for finding affordable business clothing for both men and women [5:5],
[4:1]. Additionally, investing in tailoring can enhance the fit of inexpensive clothing, making it look more polished and professional
[4:5]. It's often suggested to buy cheaper clothing and have it tailored for a perfect fit, which can be more cost-effective than purchasing expensive brands
[4:5].
Additional Recommendations
For those willing to explore beyond traditional retail options, eBay and other resale sites can offer high-quality pieces at reduced prices once you know your measurements and preferred styles [2:2]. Furthermore, checking out outlet malls like Woodbury outlets for J. Crew Factory and other brands can yield great deals
[1:11].
Besides Uniqlo and H&M. Thanks in advance!
Bonobos is also good for stylish but professional clothing.
J. Crew. Wait until one of their weekly X% off sales and pick up some muted colored basics. The ludlow slim pants, shirts, and shoes are my go-to for affordable office wear.
There’s no actual store in NYC or the area, but J. Crew Factory is great too. Good quality. Comparable fits to J. Crew. And significantly cheaper. They also always have great sales every week that you can apply. You can always try stuff on at J. Crew in NY and just order online at the Factory store if you’re not sure about your general sizing.
If they’re willing to travel a bit, the Woodbury outlets have a J Crew Factory. Great outlets in general. People go from all over to shop there. Tends to be crowded, but the deals can make it worth it if you look around a bit.
Re: The J. Crew comment check out /r/frugalmalefashion for dates.
Charles Tyrwhitt online has pretty regular sales where you can pick up good business and business casual shirts for ~$30/ each - Recommend you go in store and figure out your size.
Second Charles Tyrwhitt. Their store is in WTC. Shirts online are listed at $35/piece. I'm planning to check them out myself.
Century 21. Banana Republic Factory Store. Nordstrom Rack.
Century 21 and then take your I’ll fitting close to the tailor to proper fit. High end brands that fit perfect for much less
How much do you pay for your tailoring?
Came here to say Banana Republic Factory Store! My boyfriend and I went once and he got the most gorgeous suit for a wedding, and at a really reasonable price.
Marshall’s has great dress shirts for men for a decent price
Yeah I love TJ Maxx/Marshalls. I got a ton of printed short sleeve button ups there this year.
I’m starting a new job in May and I want to put together some nice outfits. All I really have now are a couple pairs of khakis and one pair of dark grey chinos, alongside a couple different colored polos. Not very good.
Where should I go to shop for some nice clothes, and what are some of your favorite pieces?
Budget: Uniqlo
Semi-budget: J. Crew (especially on sale), Spier & Mackay
More expensive but not luxury: Todd Snyder (especially on sale), Proper Cloth, Howlin', Meermin for shoes.
I personally like long sleeve polos and oxford cloth button downs better than s/s polos (too casual) or dress shirts (too formal).
Once you get your basics and measurements down, you can start picking up really nice stuff on eBay and other resale sites.
My advice here - buy a few outfits to get you through your first week. Business casual means different things at different companies in my experience so you’ll want to settle in and understand the vibe before investing in a bunch of new stuff.
For your first week - For day one, wear a navy or charcoal suit your first day (no tie). The rest of the week plan on a few pairs of nicer chinos / slacks with white or blue button collar dress shirt. All classic items you won’t regret owning even if your new job ends up being more or less casual.
Agree with the first paragraph. Wait and see (and get a paycheck) before buying much that's new.
On the second paragraph, my advice would be not to buy a suit unless you have the time and money to get one you really like. Whatever the vibe is, if they expected a suit they wouldn't have said business casual.
Your post didn't mention shoes, make sure you're giving that some thought.
Charles Tyrwhitt, Banana Republic, Spier & Mackay.
Depends on your budget, but im a huge fan of lululemon's dress pants (a bit expensive). Uniqlo has alot of lower priced, high quality stuff.
My business casual wardrobe is built around the trad/ivy-look and could be reduced to some chinos, OCBDs, a few dress shirts, gray wool trousers, a sportcoat or two, and at least one suit (navy or gray). I do most of my shopping online at Spier & Mackay (wool trousers & OCBDs/dress shirts), Banana Republic (chinos), and eBay (misc sportcoats and outerwear).
Hey everyone,
Broke Millennial with a corporate job that requires 30/70 business casual/business formal attire. Other than local and online thrift stores, where are some affordable places I can get skirt suits, blouses, etc?
Thanks so much!!
J. Crew Factory. They currently have 50% off clearance + 20% off of regular prices. Buy through ebates (3% cash back rn) to save a little more. I usually get like a solid 6-7 things for around $130. Not bad.
Loft also has great business casual deals, but the sale selection is usually better in the store.
Agree with everyone else's comments about H&M having good blazers/work basics.
I agree - H&M has some great options, also Zara - really like their tailoring.
Surprisingly, I’ve found some cute and affordable business casual attire at Costco.
TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, also Versona!!
H&M has cute/affordable business styles!
I don’t know why I did think of H&M. Probably because going inside a store has always been so overwhelming to me. But $15 slacks!? Yes please!!
Where would be the best place in HRM to find affordable men's business clothes? mainly just dress shirts, dress pants, ties.
I say affordable, but I would also like nice quality. Is there anywhere that offers a good in-between?
Thanks!
Honestly the key is fit, no one can tell the difference. Just buy cheap and get it tailored... that's one thing ive learned... I used to buy from Duggers a lot but I'd still have to replace them yearly...then I just went Walmart and a tailor looks the same no one can tell
Do you have recommendations for tailors? I bought something from duggers before and thought they told me I have free tailoring, but I'm not sure if its only for things I buy there.
Sherzad tailors are great. They have two locations: Bishops Landing downtown and in Bedford.
Dugger's will not tailor your George shirt for free.
Check Simons, their house brand stuff is at the same price level as RW&CO.
Winners/Marshalls would be the first spot to look.
Is the Bay still open? They might have some sales with the upcoming closing happening. Might be worth checking out if you are in the big mall
H&M, Moore's, RW&CO, Banana Republic if it's on sale....almost any clothing store in town will have good quality and affordable prices if you look.
Outside of that, try the thrift stores.
Hi I start a new job on the 19th and looking to buy clothing appropriate for a sales position. Not really entirely sure where to start in town but just looking for dress shirts and shoes (favoring towards Chelsea boots) mainly. Thank you in advance!
In order from least expensive to most (with quality somewhat commensurate) based on my experience and personal preferences:
H&M
Gap
Nordstrom Rack
JCPenney
Men's Wearhouse
Stallone's
Old Navy is super cheap I bought like 3 collared for less than 45 bucks.
I know when I left an airport ramp gig for an 'adult' job with the state I got black, navy and khaki slacks from Kohls to get me started and hit Nordstrom (that's how long ago it was) for some smart care shirts (they make a decent dress shirt that didn't require much fuss).
I'd hit Nordstrom rack and see what you can find there, Kohls and target honestly wouldn't be the worst.
What sizes you need?
I’m a between a size small or medium in shirts really depends on the fabric and typically an 8.5 in shoes
Damn I got a closet full of stuff that I mean to donate but it's all XL and bigger (started XL got fat then got back to XL again).
The comment ranking spots to check seem spot on.
Go through the thrift shops first ....
Thrift store, next to duluth on old Seward
Burlington used to have great dress shoes and pants /suits/everything for men at great prices, but I haven’t been to either location since they’ve moved/opened new ones so I’m not sure if it’s still that way anymore
Started a new job and dress code is business casual. Last job was WFH and prior jobs were all casual, so I'm lacking a sufficient wardrobe. Lookong to buy a few pairs of pants and polos and maybe a few dress shirts without breaking the bank. In terms of "affordable", I'm thinking up to $75 for pants, $50 for a shirt.
Outlets at YVR and I like RW and CO, Uniqlo!
Go to the outlet by the YVR airport. You can get some cheap polos and pants from eg Banana Republic.
That's definitely going to be my first stop, especially since the new job is in Richmond, so it's also more convenient than Metro.
Uniqlo
Probably going to go there for dress shirts. I have two from there that I use for the rare special occasion and been happy with them so far.
Pants there as well! And they will hem them in-store.
Uniqlo is definitely good too
I see you have some fine options, but if you are really trying to save, I suggest winners or marshall's.
Weird take: Costco. While they don't have a big selection, every time I go in there they have a couple items by Hilfiger or Calvin Klein or Banana Republic or Lucky or Ben Sheman... All for like $25 for a shirt or pants. Over the last few months I've completely updated my business casual wardrobe by just buying one or two items each time I go.
Same. My Costco clothes are great value for money.
Not a place I would have thought of but sounds like there could some hidden gems. Thanks!
I find it's very hit or miss, so don't pin your hopes on this but definitely give it a go.
I work remotely but need to attend an event next month that I need to wear business casual (or dressier if I wish), and I’d like to find something classy and cute but not too bland. I have an average shape (in the process of losing some weight) and just want to find a couple outfits that are classy and flattering while professional. I’m willing to pay for good quality. I am mid-career (45). If you have your go-to stores for this kind of thing, I’d love to know what they are! Thank you. 🙂
Ann Taylor has great business pieces, and they have different cuts so some styles that work for most body types.
H&M and Zara both have some fun business pieces as well, and I really try to shop their sales (because I don’t think the quality is always great). But I just got an amazing tweed pair of slacks for like $11 last week.
Also love J Crew, I’ve found their clothing seems to be geared towards middle aged bodies, especially more roomier in the arms. With sales and clearance you can get some great suit separates for amazing prices.
Nordstrom Rack can be a hit or miss as well, but has a nice mix of mid to higher end.
… you can find suiting, beautiful blouses, and slacks for super reasonable prices or sales
I was pleasantly surprised that Kohls has some decent options
seconding Kohl's, got an interview suit there not too long ago
White house black market.
I second White House black market. I find it so hard to find clothes I like and fit these days. I like a very classic look, not trendy, like the giant wide leg pants I’m sorry I can’t do. WHBM has pretty solid sales too. I have also found basics I like at banana rep factory but the fabrics there are pretty cheap.
I bought a WHBM skirt from goodwill and it's my favorite, but I don't feel like 8ve ever lived somewhere that actually had this store!
This is my go to as well!
I agree with all these nice brands, and I find them for less on Poshmark.
I second this, especially once I know exactly style and fits from certain brands, I shop heavily for them on poshmark.
I’ve been loving LOFT lately.
I’m looking for recommendations of retailers who offer professional clothes that look more high end without being super expensive. Think mid-tier cost. I’m accepting a job where I need to morph out of the polyester blends of Torrid and Old Navy professional clothing, but I don’t know where to start!
I’m thinking things like structured dresses, soft sweaters, well cut blazers in nice thick fabrics and structured cuts.
Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s have plus size that is professional and you can do well on sales.
My experience with career clothes is to spend more on quality and not quantity. A really good pair of black pants can be worn multiple times with a different top. A good blazer or jacket elevates most looks into a more professional style. Same thing wouid be true if a basic black skirt but pants tend to be trickier to look well
If I found a good pair of black pants I wouid buy multiples
I didn’t get anything that didn’t go with my black pants 🤷♀️
I always forget about Macy’s, though they can be overwhelming. Do you have any brands you recommend to narrow it down?
For better or worse the best list size departments are fairly small and th3 professional styie clothing is generally in its own section and easy to hone in on
Universal Standard is great for basics. They are having a huge sale right now too.
I didn’t realize they did workwear. This is the perfect price point and a nice jump off for basics. Thanks!
Universal Standard is great for this stuff. Super high quality and almost everything is intentionally designed to mix and match so you can buy a few staples and build around them. Definitely shop the sales though or it gets expensive fast.
Elloquii!
Oh, yes! I ordered a dress from them for a gala. The cut was nice but the fabric was unexpected. I will totally give them another chance.
They have nice professional clothes, but hey try and send it back if it's not right. I also had good luck with stitch fix when I was last shopping for professional clothes.
There’s an Australian company called City Chic and they have lovely plus sized clothes.
I can’t say enough good things about City Chic! They run great sales and their clothing is high quality. I work in an industry that’s trendy (and the people are judgey lol) and I have to attend a lot of events. City Chic is my go to.
I'm here for the retailer suggestions as well! But I wanted to mention using Pinterest or Google to get ideas for a professional capsule wardrobe. That way you can mix and match to create lots of looks with the same few basic pieces. Great way to start if you're rebuilding your wardrobe and need to save $. However, don't let your frugality get the best of you when something out of the ordinary and magical presents itself (you'll regret not getting that purple dress I know from experience)
After a very long job search I finally got a job! After being unemployed for months I've been living paycheck to paycheck doing freelance work. Does anyone have aby suggestions on where to get clothes and wouldn't be super expensive? Preferably new (been letdown by goodwill lately)
congrats on the job :) seconding h&m and uniqlo! they have great basics for pretty cheap, a lot of sale items can be decent-good quality and less than $5. they also carry fast fashion if you want more trendy items as well
thredup can also have some good deals if you'd like to shop secondhand online. I've found that the 'like-new' and 'excellent condition' items are pretty much like the ones that are new with tags. though honestly it can be pretty addicting to shop on there lol so be warned!
Congrats on the job!
I would look at examples of good business casual capsule wardrobes, to get an idea of how to make the least amount of stuff go the furthest. I find that Ross, TJ Maxx, Burlington etc can have good prices for pieces. I get camis to put under jackets and sheer blouses for super cheap at Walmart and Target.
I found a tooon of good work clothes at Uniqlo this weekend!
H&M
Other comments have lots of great suggestions. I would like to add, don't be afraid to look in clearance sections in some of the mid-range stores. I've scored a large number of great business casual pieces from Ricki's (not sure if they have them where you are), and other, similar stores for under $15 just by regularly thumbing through their clearance, and stores like that typically have frequent sales on top of clearance prices.
I will be starting an office job soon and I need work clothes "smart casual" like. Where should I go? Thanks in advance.
dd's discount. go hecka early in the morning. they open at like 7 or 8. get comfy shoes, 2 black pants and maybe 2 tops. rotate until the next paycheck, then head to ross or marshall to get 2 more tops. upgrade your wardrobe slowly until you have a good capsule going. do not buy all at once. Remember you'll need to complement/rotate some items for the winter months.
Easiest would be to get a white button up and another color button up/top for now if you don't already have any.
Hecka💀
H&M ngl most of the best dressed people at my workplaces buy from there. Their clothes all go together and without much thought you will look well put together
i went to uniqlo for my fits when i had an office job.
don’t sleep on marshall’s or ross either.
buy shit you can wear multiple times or mix well together to stretch the fits furthe.
congrats btw
Costco
Marshall’s Ross and TJ Maxx for new clothes at good prices. Styles will be hit and miss, so it may take some time to find everything you need
