TL;DR
Individual Standout Dancers
Several individual K-pop idols are consistently recognized for their exceptional dancing skills. Taemin from SHINee is often highlighted for his fluidity and emotional expression in dance [3:1]
[4:2]. J-Hope from BTS is praised for his musicality, versatility, and contribution to popularizing certain dance styles
[3:1]. Other frequently mentioned names include Kai from EXO, who impresses with his powerful moves, and Lisa from BlackPink, known for her sharp and charismatic style
[2:2]
[4:5].
Female Dancers
In discussions about female dancers, Momo from Twice, Yeji from ITZY, and Hyolyn are often cited as some of the best [4:5]
[4:2]. Momo is noted for her precision and energy, while Yeji is recognized for her stage presence and dynamic movements. Hyolyn's fluidity and strong performance skills also earn her a spot among the top female dancers
[4:1].
Group Dance Dynamics
When it comes to groups, Seventeen is frequently mentioned for their impressive synchronization and complex choreography [2:1]
[5:2]. NCT is also noted for having multiple members with strong dance skills, such as Ten and Taeyong
[2:7]. Itzy is recognized for its "monster" dancers like Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yeji, who set a high bar for girl group performances
[5:3].
Diversity in Dance Styles
The diversity in dance styles across K-pop makes it challenging to rank dancers definitively. Each dancer brings unique strengths, whether it's through powerful moves, emotional storytelling, or technical prowess [3:4]. This diversity is reflected in the variety of dancers that fans admire, with each fan having personal preferences based on different dance elements
[1:10].
Underrated Talents
There are many talented dancers in lesser-known groups who may not receive as much attention but are highly skilled. For example, Hwanwoong from OneUs is recognized for topping his year in the Practical Dance department at SOPA [1:5]. These dancers contribute to the rich tapestry of talent within the K-pop industry
[1:6].
I should begin by saying that everyone will have different answers to the question, and everyone (including my self) will be a bit biased in our opinions. With that said, who would you put in the top 10 dancers in Kpop? 1 being the best and 10 being the least best out of them, I understand most people won't be able to put as many as 10 but I am saying top 10 just in case.
My list:
I know there aren't many women on there, but I know alot more about male idols, so I am sure there are many fantastic female and probably some male dancers I forgot.
People posting their top 10 male kpop dancers and purposefully omitting Taemin make me laugh
I’m just surprised no one is saying Ten from NCT. I thought he was like iconic for dancing. Jimin, Jhope, Taemin, etc. I agree are just all iconic.
Edit: just kidding I now see that Ten is on some lists ooops lol
Agreed.
Also people posting top 10 dancers at all but omitting Momo is beyond ridiculous.
sorry but Momo is definitely not going to be in most people’s overall Top 10 lists lol. she’s a great dancer, but Top 10 overall..? don’t think so.
There's plenty of excellent dancers in lesser known groups. Hwanwoong (OneUs) topped his year in the Practical Dance department of SOPA, beating people who were aiming at a professional dancing career, while being an idol trainee in an agency that specializes in vocals.
>Hwanwoong (OneUs) topped his year in the Practical Dance department of SOPA
3 years in a row iirc. He was legit famous amongst other students. Here's a choreographer mentioning him when asked about the best idol dancers
Seconding Hwanwoong! I very rarely watch performances, even for my ult groups, but the man's a prodigy. I'd basically watched all of Oneus' performances because of him for about 3ish comebacks in a row before I realized maybe I ulted them too lol
Oneus' Tempo cover stage made me stan tbh
Also agreed. It's clear looking at so many of these lists people have limited knowledge of the best dancers in the whole industry. I see huge omissions in some lists that show up in others.
I only know GG so,
I placed a number, but ignore those, halfway I realized I don’t know which should be above the others 😅
I think unless these kinds of lists should be "favourite dancers" rather than "best dancers" because unless you aren't biased and actually know how to dance then it's more of a personal preference but here are my personal top 5:
It’s impossible to be unbiased and even if you somehow are unbiased and you know how to dance, ask three different people they’ll give you three different lists based on their own preferences.
Not to mention they're trained in different styles of dance. It's a form of art, not a math test where they can be graded just like that.
Hi, pretty new to kpop. I wanna know what group is considered to be the best dancers. Both guy and girl groups. Thanks!
My sweet summer child. There is no answer to this question. Everyone is just gonna say their bias groups.
Lmao I was hoping for like the general consensus among fans. Like even if you don’t like Michael Jackson most people would say he’s a good dancer. Or like most people agree Mariah Carey is/was one of the best singers etc
There is some kind of general consensus for individual idols. Like if you say that EXO Kai, SHINee Taemin, BTS J-Hope, NCT Ten, SNSD Hyoyeon, Twice Momo, BP Lisa, RV Seulgi etc are some of Kpop's finest dancers, most people would agree. But once you make the question about whole groups, it gets too complicated for anyone to agree on anything.
I feel like everyone here, in the typical redditor fashion, is making it more complicated and confusing than it is for you, there ARE groups that are well known for dance - sometimes it's more about pure skills, sometimes about complicated routines, sometimes about how good of performers they are. You will quickly notice that very time kpop fans discuss dance some names pop up more than the others - Seventeen, NCT, TXT, Ateez, Le sserafim, Loona, Twice, Dreamcatcher, Itzy, in the past Shinee, Infinite, Izone and Gfriend were known for their skills too! It doesn't mean every member of these groups is an above average dancer but as TEAMS they are considered to be among the best, like no one in their right mind is going to argue Seventeen or Twice aren't even that good and BTOB and aespa are better than them, and if they do they will be ridiculed.
Fair enough. The replies are still gonna be biased toward the more popular groups in this sub though (which isn’t to say that those groups wouldn’t necessarily also be the “best” dancers, but they also might not necessarily be)
Kpop groups are kinda by default created to balance all aspects of idol life, so it's really rare for all members to be great at one given thing. You'll usually have the dance line, whose focus lies mainly in dancing, and the other members, who just have to be decent.
So you can either compare the dance lines, the baseline of non-dance focused members or the groups as a whole (how good they look as a group dancing group choreo). Or some weird mashup of the three.
Every version will give you different results, so it's hard to give a conclusive answer.
Not even getting into the "performance vs dance" discourse lol
The best BG dancers I lean Seventeen.
The best GG dancers are probably Everglow followed closely by Itzy. If you count XG, then XG by a few miles.
i just started watching some XG videos and was looking for this... it's pretty absurd how much better they are than every kpop gg. I was shocked.
Yeah, they are not really in the same league when it comes to dancing. They were kinda trained as pro dancers and their main choreographer Sienna Lalau.
Ateez
I wholeheartedly agree with this, and would say your user name is a close second for me, nct/wayv are incredible.
Seventeen, SHINEE Taemin, MonstaX Shownu, BTS J-Hope. Biases aside, I think GOT7 sp Yugyeom and his friend BamBam dances pretty well too.
In my opinion, Taemin is the best dancer in the industry.
The way his body moves is unreal. He can make powerful moves look so effortless and fluid, has so much control, insane footwork… all of that could be said about a few other dancers but what really makes him stand out to me is the emotions he put into his performance. I don’t know how to explain but he just makes you feel like he lives inside the song he dances to.
What do you think? Please add some videos too!
Some of the best in my opinion:
Jhope, Taemin, Momo, Hyohyeon, Lisa, Jimin, Minzy, Luna, Hyolyn, Yeji, Ten, Lay, N, The8, Hoshi, Dino
You are never going to get a proper answer, everyone will just name their bias. Not sure if it even can be determined unless they were all to attend the same competition judged by real (non-Kpopper) professionals.
Also, once you reach a certain level, it doesn't really matter who is the best. It's like comparing Astaire and Gene Kelly - both were great dancers who brought something special to the stage.
I honestly wanted everyone to share some dance videos rather than trying to find an answer, but I guess I should’ve added some examples of my own so people would get the hint lol. I wanna see some good dancing videos!
If you're looking for videos, I enjoy this person's analysis videos: https://www.youtube.com/@facts_in_fiction
I don't always agree with their rankings, but I appreciate that they always include a lot of clear examples of what they're talking about. My dance training is in ballet, but the examples they use are clear enough that I can usually spot the specific strengths or weaknesses they're discussing despite my different background.
Since Taemin is your favorite, a good starting point might be their Taemin analysis video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpEUOByb98k
Taemin, Jimin, J-hope, Momo
J-Hope and Jimin.
Jhope from BTS!
I don’t think anyone else comes close tbh. I’m a dancer myself and his musicality, versatility and skill level is unmatched. It’s clear from his documentary on street dance to his stage performances.
He’s an actual dancer and probably the only idol who has ever been recognized by a dance community for bringing that style to the public eye. Literally the creators of the locking dance style wrote a thank you post to jhope for his efforts in bringing the dance style to a bigger and wider audience. Unmatched imo!
I love the way part of his concert set was a love letter to dance, and the way he celebrated his dance crew is so heartwarming
Here are mine:
J hope from BTS
Jimin from BTS
Taemin from Shinee
Kai from Exo
Hoshi from Seventeen
Ten from Nct
(This is not in any particular order)
IMO, it’s Hyo, Boa, Seulgi, Momo, Chungha, Minzy, Lisa, and Yeji.
I don’t pay much attention to male idols but Taemin and Kai have impressed me.
same with the second part.
In female idols, my favourites are: Hyolyn, Minzy, Seulgi, Momo, Sua and Yeji.
In male idols, they’re Hyunjin, San, Kai, Dino and Hoshi, Soul (from P1Harmony), Hwanwoong, and Taemin.
Eunhyuk from SJ, he is unfortunately always left out but the only one who impressed me. His fluidity and effortless ease with which he dances is amazing imo.
From female idols. Hyolyn
>His fluidity and effortless ease with which he dances is amazing imo.
Yes fully agree!!! He's my most favorite dancer ❤
Lisa from Blackpink
Momo from Twice
Yeji from Itzy
Chaeryeong from Itzy
Hyoyeon from Girls generation
Minzy from 2ne1
This isn’t in any order, I’m just listing out only female idols because they tend to get left out these discussions.
+1
This is a little pet peeve of mine. Even if people aren’t familiar with female idols, I wish they’d put that out there and say they’re only talking about the best male idol dancers because they only know male idols.
Otherwise - even if that’s not their intention - it implies that all the best dancers in the industry are male :/
I am on the opposite side. I only follow girl groups so I never mention male groups/idols since I only know maybe 3 male idols? so I cant talk about them so my lists are always like
Momo
Chaeryeong
the end
only "male idols" I know/like are in coed groups
Min from Miss A trained with Hyoyeon!
Minzy’s dance regression broke my heart but she was crazy good on the scene.
Lol thank you. I would also like to add Chung Ha and Seungyeon from CLC.
SVT - Hoshi, Dino
SKZ - Lee Know (!!)
NCT - Shotaro, Ten
Ateez Le Sserafim GFriend
I mean, to be able to keep up with Hoshi + Dino and stay synchronized to not obviously appear like you're worse than them, you really gotta be a good dancer! Kind of amazes me how even the "worst" dancers are still really good!
This is the answer. Having 3 of the best dancers in the kpop industry in one group, sadly kinda makes the other two not shine as much, but both Lia and Yuna are very strong dancers as well, it's just that Ryujin, Chaer and Yeji are MONSTER dancers that would make most gg look like amateur dancers.
lia definitely is not a bad dancer, she just comes off as weaker one as other four members are main dancer material + as said: she needs more confidence (even though she has already improved that too, which i love for her <3)
true Lia is not a bad dancer, it's not her strongest suit. It's JYP and I don't think anyone in JYP is a bad dancer to begin with.
let’s be honest there are very little bad dancers in kpop currently, there are so many trainees that if one of them can’t dance as well they’ll be cut from the lineup and replaced
This. Companies focus so much (I would argue too much) on dance these days, it’s hard to find a “bad” dancer. I wish the same was true about vocalists and rappers…
Because they can fix "bad" vocals in post-production and many idols lip sync live performances... but there's no fix for bad dancing.
this tbh bad dancers are only the ones that you can clearly see do not give a f about the performance. you may not execute the steps perfectly but if you look like you are enjoying yourself and are in sync, then everything is good.
Personally, I don't think Lia is a bad dancer, she's pretty good in idol standards, it just happens that shes in a group with four others who are incredibly strong dancers. If she was put in any other group, I really don't think people would have called her a bad dancer.
they're so underrated when it comes to dance! their stage presence is also unmatched
yep not a single bad or even weak dancer
ateez 100% they're all breathtaking
I'm curious to see what yours are! Some of my favorites are definitely Seventeen- Don't Wanna Cry, Loona- Butterfly, and Gfriend- Sunrise (but it's hard to narrow it down...) I've been dancing my whole life and choreos like these with beautiful formations and different dance styles always make me so happy! :)
Cherry Bomb is, for me at least, the best choreo in all of kpop. My personal faves would probably be Drama by TXT (they're so in sync and it's so satisfying) or maybe Likey or TT by Twice because they're the only ones I can even remotely dance to
Cherry Bomb is so good, and when they did it on that speed up speed down show they were the first group to ever get 100%. Sorry I don’t know what that show or program was called haha
also Criminal by Taemin because wow
My personal faves are:
I tend to really like either artistic / unique choreography and/or ones where there are really powerful/swag moves.
oh my gosh I forgot about Move! so iconic.
I love the traditional Korean dance elements too! I wish there were more choreos that incorporate them :')
Only a few months into kpop so these are probably very obvious answers for fans of these groups:
BTS — Idol, Mic Drop
Seventeen — Aju Nice, Snap Shoot, 24H
Ateez — Wonderland, Inception, Illusion
I LOVE Nice - mostly Jun being so extra and fabulous in it but everyone is truly wonderful.
Very obvious for a good reason! These are all great- also, welcome to the fandom :D
Bless you,my child. I felt like a basic bitch giving these answers.
Seventeen- very nice , don't wanna cry Taemin- move izone- eyes of the swan Blackpink- dudu duu duu I.o.i - very very very
BTS - Blood Sweat and Tears
Taemin - Move & Criminal
GFriend - Rough
Dreamcatcher - Deja Vu
[deleted]
The best one I learned was: dice nmixx, antifragile lesserafim, feel special twice
The hardest : miroh straykids, dont wanna cry seventeen
Best ones: Dynamite, Mona Lisa, Seven, Like Jennie, etc.
Hardest ones: Standing next to you, Easy, Jellyous, butterfly by loona
The best: Crazy bi le sserafim Hardest: i thunk rockstar and like jennie
Jellyous - ILLIT
I've learned the chorus of Blackpink's dances, and I think at least I can see them clearly.
I also think the hardest one is Seventeen Super
I’m just curious, how reliable are these rankings actually because I’ve never really heard about kpopstarz?
kpopstarz didn't do the ranking, it was conducted by ilgan sports, a korean news source! kpopstarz just translated it to english for some reason. the survey was actually conducted back in 2018 so this isn't new news. i just thought it would be kind of interesting to share!
ooh i see. thank you for this!! deserved for hoshi btw XD
hoshi is in 2nd place with 10 votes! i wonder which two members didn't vote for him? /j
Ha, I always think this when I see these poll results.
I adore Woozi and Seungkwan, but when they are ranked high for best body and most beautiful, I do begin to suspect that Seventeen has formed a voting block!
Dino and The8 voted for themselves /j
I was so confused because it mentioned Wanna One/Nu'est W in the article and it turns out they reposted it from another translated article posted 2 years ago lol
PERIOD. Where's Dino tho ;-;
Edit: Kinda shocked that Lisa, Chung ha, and Hyoyeon weren't included maybe they're in the top 10?
DRUNK-DAZED, AND FEVER DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE. the part where they get on the floor in drunk-dazed, chef kiss. Everything about fever is iconic. I also think Twice has some iconic choreography, like Fancy and some of the formations in Feel Special are amazing, I haven’t seen much of Seventeen yet but I’m predicting that a lot of people are going to say Seventeen
Hoshi - Spider
In the practise video, there is a dance sequence when all dancers wearing black are on one side and white are on other and Hoshi in grey sweatshirt is the centre. It's might be planned or not but it's so on point with the concept!
Black Swan it's so elegant and beautiful, really fit the song and message overall.
Also, special mention to RUN BTS that live rent free in my mind since the concert. 😭
Getting Closer by Seventeen! 🫶🏻
Seventeen Fallin Flower. What a beauty.
And 24hr from their Japanese discography
The imagery in these choreos, it's brilliant.
The formations and imagery are outstanding.
NCT 127 - Kick it
iconic. catchy. memorable. and the dance break with the imitation of fighting? ICONIC. the dance practice is as interesting as the MV
agree this one is definitely one of my favorites !
puku puku pow pow
