generally
JayB & Youngjae (GOT7), Ailee, IU, and Sammy (the Rose). It's way too difficult to only pick one.
Woosung has such a unique voice. He stands out all the time.
IU followed closely by Heize.
BAEKHYUN
1000% agreed
EXO D.O
personally i love BTS’s vocals, ik their vocals aren’t the most technical in the industry but this is what preference is about. imo bts have the most unique voices in kpop, and i’m such a sucker for unique voices. some others i love are:
IU - solo
eric nam - solo
onew + jonghyun - Shinee
seungmin - Stray Kids
jongho - ateez
mamamoo
siyeon - dreamcatcher
woozi - seventeen
baekhyun, chen, d.o - exo
and honestly so many more. i do enjoy all the members of most groups including those which i’ve mentioned above but i wanted to specify some of my fave faves :3
For me it’s:
Soyeon from Idle
Dami from Dreamcatcher
Chanyeol from Exo
Yeeun from CLC
J from Stayc
Han of SKZ
Bang chan of SKZ
Changbin of SKZ, I've been in love with his singing voice since their survival show. 3Racha are simply amazing.
I guess I should have just written 3Racha lol 😄
Hongjoong from Ateez. When their main vocalist Jongho was on hiatus HJ filled in and did all the high notes.
Jongho* :)) but yeah, Hongjoong is definitely amazing!!
(I actually used to confuse his and Jonghos voice back when I started stanning them😭 I don't exactly know why but I find it kinda funny)
Moonbyul from Mamamoo.. I always wanted more vocals in Mamamoo songs for Byul; Dami and Gahyun of Dreamcatcher; IM and Joohoney- especially Joohoney of Monsta X. I also like EXY of WJSN.
Moonbyul definitely doesn't get enough credit for singing
Omg I forgot about Moonbyul!
YES!!! Girl can sing!
J-hope!! He sings in his recent singles Mona Lisa and Sweet Dreams and he has smooth stable vocals.
Han of Stray Kids. Really love when he’s singing ballad. 🥹❤️
I love a lot about kpop, but as someone who sings, the vocals are definitely the thing that catch my attention the most.
Who are your top 5, and what are some of your favorite moments of breathtaking vocals in kpop?
Of course in listing my personal top 5 vocalists, this is my opinion, so I will have some bias. However I will try my best to be fair and draw on my degree- a B.A in music. I have experience and training in both vocal and instrumental performance.
Also I must apologize that this will mainly be a boy group list! I don't follow Girl Groups all that closely. However a few female voices within kpop really impress me; first of all Mamamoo's Hwasa, she has an incredible range that I think not many people give her credit for. Red Velvet is very strong vocals-wise, Wendy, Joy, and Irene all have caught my attention at various points. Also Weki Meki's Doyeon has a very unique tone to her voice and I find it very pleasant to listen to.
Here's my top 5:
UP10TION's Sunyoul - There are many vocalists in kpop, and so many I could name, but Sunyoul has definitely made a name for himself (maybe in my heart at least? lol!) as a very unique one. His appearance on King of Masked Singer, where he fooled all the judges into thinking he was female, is legendary at this point. He is a very high tenor, and on top of that very well trained, and there are very few of those out there in general, let alone in kpop. It's beautiful and I always appreciate hearing him sing. It's DIFFICULT to be so EFFORTLESS in hitting notes as high as he does!! ugh I wish I could do that...also have you heard his VIBRATO lord....it's always spot on and makes me happy!!
Tie: Pentagon's Jinho, Pentagon's Hui - I became a kpop stan in November 2016, not long after Pentagon's debut, and I've always thought that they have one of the strongest vocal lines among boy groups. I'll start with Hui; maybe it's just because I'm a Universe, but I find his vocal tone very refreshing and unique? I'd recognize his voice anywhere, and he has the versatility to do many, many different genres--Jazz, Rock, RnB--you name it. He has a spectacular range as well. Then we have Jinho; he has a lot of singing experience, going back to being in SM The Ballad, and every time I hear his voice I'm blown away. His range matches, if not exceeds Hui's, as well. Just a very amazing natural talent.
Super Junior's Kyuhyun - his voice is so emotional, and he's superb at conveying that to his listeners. It's one thing to say someone is an incredible vocalist; but that is a very special talent that transcends language. Kyuhyun truly deserves his title of ballad king imo. He also has incredible vocal control. I've watched his King of Masked Singer stages many, many times and they never fail to impress me.
Monsta X's Kihyun - I probably have listened to Kihyun the most of all the vocalists here, and he just continues to get better imo. His range might not be as large as some of the other vocalists on this list, but he has amazing breath and vocal control, and a whole lot of power. Also he's always working to be more versatile- he smashes rock covers, like in his recent covers of Believer and Natural (Imagine Dragons), and he's also a king of ballads, with the release of the OST Again Spring and also his cover of 안아줘.
BIGBANG's Taeyang - To me, Taeyang's voice has always been the definition of Sexy, and I think it says a lot of my admiration of him that I enjoyed his vocals and was impressed with his talent even before I knew what kpop was. I remember listening to Ringa Linga and Eyes, Nose, Lips for the first time and I just fell in love with his voice. It might not be one that critics find particularly impressive, but I always enjoy listening to him sing. His voice is comforting to me.
Honorable mention-- CRAVITY's Woobin - I think it's too early to put him on my list of 'best kpop vocalists', but he's already proven himself to be a rising star -- I love his adlibs and high notes in Ohh Ahh, Believer, and Realize, all of which are pretty extensive. I think he'll only get better as his experience grows and time goes on.
no order:
Suhyun (Akmu), Baekhyun (exo), Dokyeom (seventeen), Youngk (day6), Taeyeon (SNSD)
In no particular order:
Male
Female
Edit:
Personal best vocal moment in kpop
i know who i think, but i’m curious to hear what you guys think. can be from any gen, any group/solist, from a band, etc! may or may not be editing this with my own opinions ^__^
EDIT: okay so the vocalists i’m listing below are a mix of my personal favorites and ones that i love and genuinely deserve the title:
-hweseung (n.flying), seunghun (cix), lee honggi (ft island), bora (cherry bullet), jinho + hui (pentagon), wendy (red velvet), leo + ken (vixx), solji (exid), yonghoon (onewe), baekhyun (exo), hyojin (onf), bohyung (spica/keembo), jonghyun (shinee), yuju (gf/solo), luna (f(x)), rocky (astro), dk (seventeen), taeil (nct), jongho (atz), winter + ningning (aespa), oneus and e’last have great vocalists too!
Exo- chen, baekhyun, Kyungsoo (honorable mentions: suhoo, minseok, chanyeol)
Shinee- Jonghyun, Taemin, Onew, Key (honorable mention: Minho)
I'm another one here to say thank you for including Key. I think that a lot of people don't appreciate his vocal abilities because he doesn't sound like Onew, for example (you know, what many consider more traditionally beautiful vocals). I love the vocals of all of the SHINee members because they harmonize so, so beautifully and they are just all incredible vocalist. However, Key's voice will always and forever be my favorite. I don't think he gets the amount of love and appreciation that he so truly deserves, both vocally/musically and just in general.
I always have to laugh at the shinee vocal line-up and Minho being the odd man out. He’s a good vocalist it’s just stiff competition in that group
Yes he is great i just put him to be honorable bc the others have better skills its separating them somwhat but still giving him credit/appreciating his vocals
So sad no one mentioned Yang yoseob from Highlight/B2ST 😢 He is currently 2nd place for the most wins on King of Masked Singer and will probably be the only person from a kpop idol group to get 9 consecutive wins on that show. I recommend watching his King of Masked Singer performances for sure!!!
Came here to say this. Hands down the best vocalist in K-pop. Unfortunately our international fandom isn't very big so many people don't know him.
If anyone would wanna discredit his abilities pls listen to bad love if he hadnt have released anything still this song demonstrates just how good he is
I heard someone say his voice is one of the crown jewels of kpop, and this person couldn't have been more right
Hyolyn (sorry don't have a particular performance for her)
Solar (from Mamamoo), but I don't have a particular performance for her either!
Hyolyn's performance of Fate on "I Am a Singer" is one of my favourite performances ever
I thought people say Wheein has the best technique in Mamamoo
Kim Jonghyun of SHINee, He one of the greatest vocalist in kpop history. When he sang that man would SANG!!! he had so much soul and life to his voice. The industry was truly blessed to be given his voice, artistry, literature (via his novel.) and lyrics. He’s such a talented Individual, He has writing credits in 74 songs for sm and wrote for other artists. He was a host of his own radio talk show where his profoundness truly shined. Talking about his poetry and writing process, he would discuss bullying and mental health issues of Korean youth which is a taboo in many cultures to speak on. And it’s something idols weren’t open to taking about so publicly. He in my opinion is one of the greatest vocalist that has graced us. He will always be remembered as a poet & artist. He did well, and may he be at peace🙏💎❤️
i mainly listen to female vocalists so here's my opinion:
bada, eunji, taeyeon, luna, solar, wendy, wheein, yuju, ailee, hyolyn
These are some of my favourite voices in Kpop ever. Their voices have something that makes my ears feel heavenly whenever they sing. Voices, that are present in my before bed playlist. Of course there can be more but I only have them on top of my mind. What are yours? Do share.
I have a loooong list ;-;
For gg it's a little shorter
Omg I love like all of those girls!!! Do you like Blackpink?
Such a unique tone. Agree
I know they're an obvious choice, but the ladies from Mamamoo are just so good at singing. In a similar genre, I've been relistening to Ladies Code- all so, so great.
For the guy groups, I know Jongho from Ateez gets a lot of deserved praise, but I think that whole vocal team is great; and I'll always give a shoutout to Pentagon and (again, probably obvious) Hui.
And you can tell me yours. Lessgooooo
Ateez
Yunho among the vocal line. I really like his deep tone and I often listen to Ice on My Teeth just to hear his opening lines 😅
Also really like Mingi's deep rap tone. Suits his style of rapping as well
P1harmony
I think Keeho is my favorite vocalist in all of kpop
I love both Keeho and Theo. I especially love Keeho's lower register 🤌🏻
These guys are sooo underrated and easily one of the best vocalists in 4th gen imo
Red Velvet
Ohhh it was so difficult to choose between Wendy and Seulgi but (and this could be because she is my bias) I think l like Seulgi's tone better. Although Wendy's parts are the most memorable to me.
There's this richness to Seulgi's voice that I can't explain which is why I like it so much.
Shinee.
Jonghyun without a doubt. One of my favourite vocal tones in kpop 🙌🏻
Rest in peace. It's Key for me.
Onew 🙌🏼
DK!!!!!!
Gosh I looooove his vocal tone so much and it helps that he's my bias too. I particularly took notice of his tone in Good To Me and I'd honestly love to see him venture into the RnB space in the future for his solo stuff
I would like to see people's tier list, and it doesn't have to be super long but feel free to do so lol. Girl groups only, from any gen, as a whole and not by an individual vocalist within one's group.
I assume girl group with on average the best vocalists?
The Grace
Davichi
Mamamoo
Heard Davichi floating around…probably will notice if I see/hear them. Never heard of The Grace 👀
Also called CSJH The Grace.
All of Mamamoo
Was listening to Starry Sea (MMM+) and continue to be struck by how incredibly Moonbyul’s voice is. She is their main rapper! They’re all main vocalists, tbh
They’re definitely top tier 💯
Yeah if we're speaking on a group average, out of all the active popular groups rn, Mamamoo is the best kpop gg when it comes to vocals and it isn't even a competition. (when it comes to individual idols, then the list opens up ofc)
From fourth gen, NMIXX are pretty widely accepted as having some of the best vocals -- Especially Lily and Haewon, which if you pay attention to the Most Replayed parts on YouTube, they're coincidentally always their parts lol
And NewJeans are pretty average vocally, but good at conveying feelings through their singing. You don't see them hitting crazy notes or doing anything very exciting for now, but who knows what will come in the future, they're the artists for League of Legends World 2023, so maybe we'll see some crazy singing like never before from the girls.
Best is all gonna come down to personal opinion.
really like ningning and winter combination tbh, i feel like they blend in super well
i swear, every other day these types of questions of who is "the best" are asked lol
Do we really need to think about this? C’mon, we all know it, it’s CHEN. One and only 😁
You know what's funny, the next letter is D and if we all vote for D.O we'll have the 3 EXO main vocalists in a round.
d is so obviously daesung tho like he's too iconic
That’s what I thought too hahaha well EXO is one of the good groups that are not afraid to sing live tho 😁 even you ask them on the spot? They’re not going to fail u 😉
What’s even more funny is that EXO-K, EXO-L, EXO-M are in order too 🥹
Was going to comment this as well. D.O. for D even if we're still on C.
Chen impregnated a whole nation in cream soda alone! His vocals are heavenly
Chen !!!
CHEN
CHENNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
D.O. - EXO
dokyeom!!!
DK from Seventeen !!!
D.O. - EXO
Yasss! This is the only correct answer.
No doubt ✨
yeeeesss
D.O
