The Legendary Sannin in Naruto

TL;DR The Legendary Sannin are Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. They were given this title by Hanzo of the Salamander after surviving a battle against him.

Origin of the Title "Legendary Sannin"

The term "Sannin" literally means "three people" in Japanese, but in the context of Naruto, it refers to the "Legendary Three Ninja" [2:2]. This title was bestowed upon Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade by Hanzo of the Salamander after they survived a battle with him during the Second Great Ninja War [3:2]. Hanzo was so impressed by their abilities that he allowed them to live and gave them this honorary title [2:5].

Characteristics and Abilities

Each member of the Sannin is renowned for their unique skills and contributions to the ninja world:

  • Jiraiya: Known for his mastery of summoning jutsu, particularly involving frogs, and his ability to enter Sage Mode, which greatly enhances his physical abilities and chakra [5:1].
  • Orochimaru: Famous for his extensive knowledge of ninjutsu, body modifications, and snake-related techniques. He is often considered a genius due to his innovative and sometimes unethical experiments [5:1].
  • Tsunade: Recognized for her unparalleled expertise in medical ninjutsu and her summoning of Katsuyu, a giant slug. She is also known for her immense strength and being the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage [5:1].

Impact and Legacy

The Sannin have left a significant impact on the Naruto series and the shinobi world. They were trained by the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and each went on to train the next generation of powerful ninjas, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno [5:1]. Their influence extends beyond their individual achievements, as they played crucial roles in major events throughout the series.

Cultural Significance

The title "Legendary Sannin" is not an official rank within the ninja hierarchy but rather a recognition of their extraordinary abilities and teamwork. It is similar to other honorary titles in the series, such as "Yellow Flash" or "White Fang," which highlight exceptional individuals who stand out from the standard ranking system [2:4].

ORIGINAL POST

We all know that they were protégés of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. Given what they did during the war, are they considered the three most powerful ninja's? I've been pondering about this for a while now lol

Not sure, But I bet that their names are well known all over the shinobi world

Naruto and Sasuke are the de facto top 2; as for Sakura, there are around 4 shinobi at least (excluding the top 2) who are clearly superior to her.

Aside from that, they're basically the new Sannin because of their general power and who their teachers were.

there's no legendary sannin....and sakura is no way the third strongest ninja

the gap between naruto / sasuke and sakura is so large that you can't really put them in the same title

Sannin was an arbitrary title given by hanzo, it’s not a measure, rank, status, or whatever. Just a title

"Sannin" means 3 people

Just to clear things out, again. Ive seen people saying these 3 achieved a rank higher than "Jonin" or "Anbu". Some other guys saying they know so many jutsu because they are now a "Sannin".

Maybe some of your opinions about power scaling will change with the understanding that these 3 are not "Sannin" , they are the "Legendary Sannin" practically means the legendary 3

Isn't legendary* sannin the name Hanzo gives them after their fight?

Yes, he named them "Densetsu no Sannin" which means the legendary 3 after surviving his attacks.

3 upvotes on reddit
ZeustyLukey · 16 days ago

Yes hanzo gave them that name because of how well they worked together the legendary 3 people, or the legendary squad of 3. Think of them as the strongest all around Shinobi squad of all time until war arc squad 7.

Now yes they are basically kage level shinobi or at least approaching kage level.

Orochimaru may not have had edo tensei, but his kit allowed him to kill the kazekage and have part 1 kakashi shit his pants. How much of a gap do you think part 1 orochimaru is from his confrontation with hanzo?

Im not sure when jiraiya had his imperfect sage mode, but that ability is for sure kage level and his chakra levels and jutsu arsenal is insane. Itachi had a conflicting interest and could have taken out jiraiya but he would have to go all out. Sage mode genjutsu takes out kisame with ease since pain with his rinnegan couldnt have broken out of the frog song. And im assuming jiraiya has imperfect sage mode because of his ties to mt myobuku and learning the prophecy before he even went to war in the rain village.

Tsunade with her hashirama cells allowing a 3rd rate senju vitality regeneration and huge AP breaking a perfect suasnoo during the war arc is nothing to sneeze at. Considering ems sasuke is easily beyond kage level and that is just a complete regular susanoo.

I think they were the strongest because they were relative to kage level ninia and working together allowed them to take on high kage level shinobi.

Best_Revolution_178 · OP · 16 days ago

I like how this title somehow differs to the ninja ranks normally given in to people who serve the kage.

The white fang, yellow flash, etc. As if the formal ranking is not giving them them justice of how good they are

korkkis · 16 days ago

Still, sannin level is very vague and arbitrary, and it’s similar to ”kakashi-level”. Also kage level is a bit shady but more understandable, as it only means leader of a village who is not even always the strongest (like Kakashi as hokage when Naruto was still around)

Oh I don't care about this at all. But you're pointing out that sanin doesn't mean anything it just means 3 people. And that it shouldn't effect scaling or whatever. But they are the LEGENDARY 3 people. It's not the sanin part that people are focusing on.

4 upvotes on reddit
Maleficent_Park5469 · 16 days ago

Not to be that person but cmon, clearly when someone says that a character is "sannin level" they are refering to being around Jiraiya/Tsunade/Orochimaru levels of power.... They're not refering to an actual rank, just being around that level. Let's stop making everything an issue

38 upvotes on reddit
Best_Revolution_178 · OP · 16 days ago

This is literally a sub where minor details are important.

Not sure why you received it as an issue, i was just explaining. I literally just read someone saying "he is a sannin" . What does that even mean.

And if we're being honest, not many people know how theyd become the legendary 3 and where the sannin term comes from. I also hear people saying naruto has to reach chuunin, jonin and sannin first before becoming hokage. Which is not true.

I'm curious how the information about Hanzo naming the three legendary Sannin became known to the world?

Posted by EngineeringFair2842 · in r/Naruto · 2 months ago

Fight ends, they go their separate ways, and then Hanzo just starts walking around telling everyone about the strong Konoha shinobi he met? I highly doubt the three of them did it themselves. What would they even say? 'We survived a fight against the greatest, the very god of shinobi named Hanzo? Now go tell all your friends that our official title is now Sannin'?

While a lot of the answers are quite funny, I think there might be a more serious version of events that realistically might have taken place. From both perspectives.

Hanzo: clearly impressed by the trio, but still victorious. He himself makes a big deal out of giving them a title, the legendary Sannin. It wouldn't mean much if he wouldn't at least get the ball rolling to make that declaration official. So he probably talked to his own people about how he defeated the three strongest Konoha Shinobi, but let them live as they were worthy adversaries.

Sannin: At some point they must've returned to Konoha and given a report to the reigning Hokage or other higher ups. A detailed report about what happened, how they fought and couldn't defeat Hanzo, but were spared their lives. Really can see the three of them sitting there, frustrated, saying "he didn't even bother to kill us, instead he damned us with faint praise and called us the Sannin." which made it into the official report. From the side of Konoha, it might even have been a blessing, turning that defeat into something positive by running with it and praising their strongest Shinobi in the press, like "The three legendary Sannin, the Shinobi even Hanzo couldn't kill!", probably good for morale and conscriptions.

Propaganda is how you keep other countries from invading you. This is why Iruka was saying dumb shit like Hiruzen being the strongest kage. Jiraiya believed Hanzo to be too powerful to be defeated by 1 guy. If word gets around that three Konoha shinobi survived the fight against him then the other villages are gonna be a little more cautious in their dealings.

Well... other people?

Hanzou didn't kill them. Rumor mill starts. Only one person needs to have heard it for word to spread - not to mention that Sannin literally means "three ninja". They are the three ninja whom Hanzou didn't kill. Not hard to come by when referring to them.

When tsunade returns to the village she talks to shikadad about deer (for medicine) and given the deer in that forest, presumably that is what the Nara clan get up to.

I think it's also a reference to a place in Japan with friendly deer who come up to people in the city.

Now, I have my own speculations on this, but I want to hear what other Naruto fans have to say

My thoughts

Jiraiya: he can summon so many different kinds of frogs and he has sage mode

Orochimaru: (probably) unmatched knowledge in ninjutsu, body modifications, and snakes

Tsunade: (probably) unmatched knowledge in medical ninjutsu, Katsuyu

Which is what it seemed Kishimoto was going for at a point but he was not able or didn't desire to pull it off.

Sasuke was the ninjutsu and weapons expert with the most training. Naruto was the strongest, the brawler with the strongest will and had unlimited chakra pools. Sakura was the smart one, expert in medical ninjutsu and (here is where she wasn't allowed to grow) the genjutsu master and poison expert.

Ranking is hard, unless some guidance is given cause they have very different strengths and weaknesses, but each capable of a lot.
