TL;DR The Legendary Sannin are Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. They were given this title by Hanzo of the Salamander after surviving a battle against him.
Origin of the Title "Legendary Sannin"
The term "Sannin" literally means "three people" in Japanese, but in the context of Naruto, it refers to the "Legendary Three Ninja" [2:2]. This title was bestowed upon Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade by Hanzo of the Salamander after they survived a battle with him during the Second Great Ninja War
[3:2]. Hanzo was so impressed by their abilities that he allowed them to live and gave them this honorary title
[2:5].
Characteristics and Abilities
Each member of the Sannin is renowned for their unique skills and contributions to the ninja world:
Impact and Legacy
The Sannin have left a significant impact on the Naruto series and the shinobi world. They were trained by the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and each went on to train the next generation of powerful ninjas, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno [5:1]. Their influence extends beyond their individual achievements, as they played crucial roles in major events throughout the series.
Cultural Significance
The title "Legendary Sannin" is not an official rank within the ninja hierarchy but rather a recognition of their extraordinary abilities and teamwork. It is similar to other honorary titles in the series, such as "Yellow Flash" or "White Fang," which highlight exceptional individuals who stand out from the standard ranking system [2:4].
We all know that they were protégés of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. Given what they did during the war, are they considered the three most powerful ninja's? I've been pondering about this for a while now lol
Not sure, But I bet that their names are well known all over the shinobi world
Naruto and Sasuke are the de facto top 2; as for Sakura, there are around 4 shinobi at least (excluding the top 2) who are clearly superior to her.
Aside from that, they're basically the new Sannin because of their general power and who their teachers were.
Gaara, killer bee, Kabuto, orochimaru?
Did I get it right?
but only kabuto and orochi are from konoha
Spot on.
Those 4 are the only other shinobi alive who are undoubtedly superior to Sakura.
there's no legendary sannin....and sakura is no way the third strongest ninja
the gap between naruto / sasuke and sakura is so large that you can't really put them in the same title
Sannin was an arbitrary title given by hanzo, it’s not a measure, rank, status, or whatever. Just a title
A mocking one I believe. Left alive at the mercy of the enemy....
God of Shinobi thinks so, so yeah.
Just to clear things out, again. Ive seen people saying these 3 achieved a rank higher than "Jonin" or "Anbu". Some other guys saying they know so many jutsu because they are now a "Sannin".
Maybe some of your opinions about power scaling will change with the understanding that these 3 are not "Sannin" , they are the "Legendary Sannin" practically means the legendary 3
Isn't legendary* sannin the name Hanzo gives them after their fight?
Yes, he named them "Densetsu no Sannin" which means the legendary 3 after surviving his attacks.
*Legendary Sannin
Yes hanzo gave them that name because of how well they worked together the legendary 3 people, or the legendary squad of 3. Think of them as the strongest all around Shinobi squad of all time until war arc squad 7.
Now yes they are basically kage level shinobi or at least approaching kage level.
Orochimaru may not have had edo tensei, but his kit allowed him to kill the kazekage and have part 1 kakashi shit his pants. How much of a gap do you think part 1 orochimaru is from his confrontation with hanzo?
Im not sure when jiraiya had his imperfect sage mode, but that ability is for sure kage level and his chakra levels and jutsu arsenal is insane. Itachi had a conflicting interest and could have taken out jiraiya but he would have to go all out. Sage mode genjutsu takes out kisame with ease since pain with his rinnegan couldnt have broken out of the frog song. And im assuming jiraiya has imperfect sage mode because of his ties to mt myobuku and learning the prophecy before he even went to war in the rain village.
Tsunade with her hashirama cells allowing a 3rd rate senju vitality regeneration and huge AP breaking a perfect suasnoo during the war arc is nothing to sneeze at. Considering ems sasuke is easily beyond kage level and that is just a complete regular susanoo.
I think they were the strongest because they were relative to kage level ninia and working together allowed them to take on high kage level shinobi.
I like how this title somehow differs to the ninja ranks normally given in to people who serve the kage.
The white fang, yellow flash, etc. As if the formal ranking is not giving them them justice of how good they are
Still, sannin level is very vague and arbitrary, and it’s similar to ”kakashi-level”. Also kage level is a bit shady but more understandable, as it only means leader of a village who is not even always the strongest (like Kakashi as hokage when Naruto was still around)
"guys did your opinion change knowing they are only the LEGENDARY 3 people?"
Or are you perhaps one of those who believe a sannin is a actually the rank higher than jonin 🤡
Oh I don't care about this at all. But you're pointing out that sanin doesn't mean anything it just means 3 people. And that it shouldn't effect scaling or whatever. But they are the LEGENDARY 3 people. It's not the sanin part that people are focusing on.
Not to be that person but cmon, clearly when someone says that a character is "sannin level" they are refering to being around Jiraiya/Tsunade/Orochimaru levels of power.... They're not refering to an actual rank, just being around that level. Let's stop making everything an issue
This is literally a sub where minor details are important.
Not sure why you received it as an issue, i was just explaining. I literally just read someone saying "he is a sannin" . What does that even mean.
And if we're being honest, not many people know how theyd become the legendary 3 and where the sannin term comes from. I also hear people saying naruto has to reach chuunin, jonin and sannin first before becoming hokage. Which is not true.
Ok? They are all three mid Kage at lowball
Fight ends, they go their separate ways, and then Hanzo just starts walking around telling everyone about the strong Konoha shinobi he met? I highly doubt the three of them did it themselves. What would they even say? 'We survived a fight against the greatest, the very god of shinobi named Hanzo? Now go tell all your friends that our official title is now Sannin'?
While a lot of the answers are quite funny, I think there might be a more serious version of events that realistically might have taken place. From both perspectives.
Hanzo: clearly impressed by the trio, but still victorious. He himself makes a big deal out of giving them a title, the legendary Sannin. It wouldn't mean much if he wouldn't at least get the ball rolling to make that declaration official. So he probably talked to his own people about how he defeated the three strongest Konoha Shinobi, but let them live as they were worthy adversaries.
Sannin: At some point they must've returned to Konoha and given a report to the reigning Hokage or other higher ups. A detailed report about what happened, how they fought and couldn't defeat Hanzo, but were spared their lives. Really can see the three of them sitting there, frustrated, saying "he didn't even bother to kill us, instead he damned us with faint praise and called us the Sannin." which made it into the official report. From the side of Konoha, it might even have been a blessing, turning that defeat into something positive by running with it and praising their strongest Shinobi in the press, like "The three legendary Sannin, the Shinobi even Hanzo couldn't kill!", probably good for morale and conscriptions.
Ah Konoha! Always doing it's best to make itself look good. Even if it's all built on lies. Lol
Propaganda is how you keep other countries from invading you. This is why Iruka was saying dumb shit like Hiruzen being the strongest kage. Jiraiya believed Hanzo to be too powerful to be defeated by 1 guy. If word gets around that three Konoha shinobi survived the fight against him then the other villages are gonna be a little more cautious in their dealings.
Well... other people?
Hanzou didn't kill them. Rumor mill starts. Only one person needs to have heard it for word to spread - not to mention that Sannin literally means "three ninja". They are the three ninja whom Hanzou didn't kill. Not hard to come by when referring to them.
Actually Sannin is just Japanese for three people 三人
三人 means "three (persons)", yes, but The Sannin are written 三忍.
Exactly, shinobi gossip travels faster than a shunshin no jutsu. One dramatic retelling and boom, legend status
Canonically Hashirama's rumours were so wild that most people just kinda assumed they were bs and he essentially became a myth
They watched Naruto too
Obviously, Hanzo sent out a memo. Probably by fax.
He uploaded the footage to YouTube
Not seemed, they are broken
Large chakra pools that are more than the uchihas and senju
Sealing chains and Hutus
Forbidden scrolls like reaper death scroll
Can be used as perfect jinchuriki’s
They were so broken it took 5 villages to deal with them
3 if I remember correctly... Four according to the community... And you forgot one aspect, the high vitality aka longer life span... If I remember currently that is...
You know what... I just got a notification from pinterest about a Kushina x Mikoto fan art...
The namikaze clan I really really wanna know more
Bruv... It mentions like a dozen times that Minato was an anomaly amongst the civilian ninjas... No clan, just talent, hard work, and a shit ton of good luck.
Not every character belongs to a “clan” like Sakura as an example
The Namikaze was probably just a family name that lead to an anomaly as strong as minato, or if you believe NChammer tsunades kid had a kid with a namikaze and led to minato, which is why he has so much chakra
shlawg sakura is from the haruno clan theyre mentioned like once but doesnt mean they dont exist 💔
I heard the Namikaze clan specializes in storm release chakra nature... Like kekkei genkai (wind and water).. which is considerably strong compared to other
The uzumaki (you know the main character's clan that we basically know nothing about)
naruto's real last name isn't even uzumaki 💀
The Houzuki Clan have literal finger guns and the ability to cancel blunt force and slashing damage by turning their bodies into water, how the hell have we not heard more about them?
Anyone else wonder about that forest where Shimamaru buried Hidan? Said something about his family watched over the forest, I think? I haven't watched in a while but I remember him saying something about how the forest was special and it was never brought up again.
When tsunade returns to the village she talks to shikadad about deer (for medicine) and given the deer in that forest, presumably that is what the Nara clan get up to.
I think it's also a reference to a place in Japan with friendly deer who come up to people in the city.
Now, I have my own speculations on this, but I want to hear what other Naruto fans have to say
My thoughts
Jiraiya: he can summon so many different kinds of frogs and he has sage mode
Orochimaru: (probably) unmatched knowledge in ninjutsu, body modifications, and snakes
Tsunade: (probably) unmatched knowledge in medical ninjutsu, Katsuyu
What do you think?
luck and bad team balance management of konoha
Probably because they were raised by the Third Hokage? Because Tsuande is Hashiramas granddaughter? Because Orochimaru is a once in a generation genius? Because Jiraiya is the gutsiest motherfucker there is?
I just realized that each memeber of team 7 was a student of a legendary sannin!! Idk why I'm finding this mind blowing, it hadn't crossed my mind until just now.
I’m actually happy that’s Mitsuki is with The team . He’s so cool lol
So far cooler than Boruto ngl
Yeah and I seen some spoilers about boruto and I don’t like what I’ve seen lol
How they were each personally trained by them wasn't a dead give away?
Yeah legit didn't hit me all this time
You still didn’t notice it even when hiruzen in the war arc literally stated it?
Dude you are a smooth brain. This is the shittest attention seeking ploy ever. Or the saddest admission of your own idiocy. Either way delete
Lol wait until you realize the ‘ “brothers” that fight and split up’ story is re-used every generation going back to the founders of the leaf village
Wait till you figure out it’s not every generation and it goes even farther back than Madara and hashirama
Wait till you realize cloning and ninja tech had been there since Naruto and Shippuden
Uhm Hashirama is made of Hashirama's cells...
You’re legitimately so, so sweet.
It even trying to be rude. Your excitement at realising this is such a sweet fan moment.
I hate by the end of the series, they were relatively mediocre shinobi
I agree with this statement. Especially Orochimaru was depicted really weak against Itachi and even Sasuke. Jiraiya v Pain was great but in the end, all the akatsuki and the sannin were depicted weak against one Obito Uchiha, mainly all the Uchiha bitches. So, yeah the sannin were mediocre compared to the overpowered blonde kid and all the red-eyed overgrown idiots.
Hey, we love that overpowered blonde kid ok?
That’s the point. Our mentors are the people we’re meant to grow beyond. Otherwise, why teach us? Plus Tsunade was there helping out in a pretty major way vs. pain and madara
Ummm. Did you see either jiraiya v pain or tsunade v madara?
Orochimaru.... no one knows what he is or where he came from.
That’s the case for a lot of characters though. Kisame is the one that comes to mind first. How come that he’s a fishman? Did his Dad/Mum had sex with a fish? Did someone experiment with his Body? Is it someone of Jutsu? Did he escape One Piece because otherwise Zorro would have made Sashimi out of him? We‘ll never know.
Yep. I’d love to know the story behind kisame too. He’s an interesting character.
Both his parents died in battle, which led to him having little care with the value of life. Experiemented on himself to fufill his goal of having immortality and acquiring all the jutsus in the world. Trained by the Third Hokage. Was once a candidate for Fourth Hokage. Has a fascination with snakes as they symbolize rebrith and eternal life. Became a rogue ninja after he was caught performing many illegal human experimentations. Conquered the Land of Sound and established the Hidden Sound Village.
That’s incredible and they all look so good! Especially Jiraiya!
Really good job on jiraiya
Lmao this is probably the best theory we have right now.
Uzumaki clan and how their hot bitches like Kudhiba are trained by villages. Think about that dammed story of how fragging Kuahina went from "I want to be a Hokage" to "I want to be a Hoekage." Think of all the cum we can shoot from these type of stories. Entire rivers of cum flowing upwards to the North as we all jerk at full power.
The hell is wrong with this comment.
PROBABLY A TROLL
The inferior Uzumaki be sold as whores and these whores having their brains melted for the Uchigger men to prey on. These whores must have their brains melted and bigger their dreams, the more money shall be paid for them. There are only two kinds of their whore kin The whores and the sissies. The whores are Karin and Kuzhina. The sissies are Naruko and the Nagako. All of them are whores and sissies. For ages, they have no men.
Kurama.
i liked the Star village filler
With "most legendary", I mean who had the greatest impact on the Shinobi world and Is still well known and remembered in the current Boruto era
Madara has legendary as his middle name.
Right? There's only one other Shinobi as legendary as Madara Uchiha and then there's everyone else.
Obito and Madara had the most impact. Without them, the entire plot wouldn't have moved the way it did.
If we're counting Boruto era, then it should be Sasuke.
Without itachi the story would have ended multiple times
Take away madara and obito the show is more peaceful
I specified "still well known to the current Era". In that case, Obito Is the last between these four because, even though he had a great impact on the Shinobi world, he was doing It with Madara's name and was a nobody to the rest of the world
Itachi would be the last in any era
Madara easily more importantly how r these guys lined up because by power Obito is above itachi and by age he is too it's bothering me
Plus Itachi is blurred out a bit, it makes no sense. Otherwise its a nice picture
Yeah, It bothered me a little too when I got this image long ago😂
Madara
None the real answer is Sakura
The true legend
honestly i like that they are considered the three sannin because they are all pretty evenly matched. Busted summons. Jiraya got sage mode and is the goat. Tsunade can heal anything and is def the physically strongest. Orochimaru does whatever weird freaky snake he wants and never dies.
They aren't actually pokemon type thing. Even in the og folklore, Oro got only beaten by combined forces of Jiraiya and Tsunade
Oro > Jiraiya ~ Tsunade
Oro is considered a generational prodigy when Jiraiya and Tsunade aren't. Oro barely used his full force and mostly underestimating others due to his god complex.
Which is what it seemed Kishimoto was going for at a point but he was not able or didn't desire to pull it off.
Sasuke was the ninjutsu and weapons expert with the most training. Naruto was the strongest, the brawler with the strongest will and had unlimited chakra pools. Sakura was the smart one, expert in medical ninjutsu and (here is where she wasn't allowed to grow) the genjutsu master and poison expert.
Uhh, shouldn't Sasuke be the genjutsu master ..?
You should read her light novel also the hundred healing seal isn't just nothing oh and by the way she came from a no-name family her parents were ordinary citizens and could you really call what Sasuke had training because if you look at it the frogs talk pervy Sage everything he pretty much knows and they kind of picked up his slack llol
lol I like the part you wrote about Orochimaru lmao. I remember years ago when I first watched the fight between him and 4 tailed naruto (in shippuden) and he randomly swung on Naruto and rocked him in the 4 tailed state. And that blew my mind. I was like wtffffff? he can do that?????
There's only one sannin who's constantly trying to improve as the other two age out. They did start out equal in part 1 then hiruzen took away orochimaru's jutsu and he made zero progress through most of shippuden. Now post shippuden, Jiraiya is dead, tsunade is growing older but snake boi is still in his prime and kicking.
>They did start out equal in part 1 then hiruzen took away orochimaru's juts
They aren't. In part i, Oro was mentioned superior to those two
They’re called a 3 way deadlock for a reason
Orochimaru > Jiraiya > Tsunade > Orochimaru, in OG anyways
Orochimaru with no arms*
It is made perfectly clear Orochimaru is above them both.
Yes, bit pro later becomes more stronger in the folklore ( stronger than Jiraiya and Tsunade )
Orochimaru kinda the wild card with all his jutsu.
Jiraiya kinda the powerhouse proto typical ninja
Tsunade has healing jutsu and really powerful taijutsu. She also great leader. I think many sleep on her.
Ranking is hard, unless some guidance is given cause they have very different strengths and weaknesses, but each capable of a lot.
