TL;DR While true 24-hour coffee shops are rare in NYC, several diners and select locations offer late-night options. Consider places like Coppelia, Donut Pub, and Chelsea Square Diner for late-night coffee and study sessions.
Diners and Late-Night Options
Many commenters noted that while traditional coffee shops open 24/7 are scarce, diners often fill this gap. Diners such as Chelsea Square Diner [2:3], Ritz Diner
[3:2], and Tick Tock Diner
[2:10] provide a place to work late into the night. These establishments typically won't mind if you bring a laptop, especially during off-peak hours.
Specific Locations
For those seeking specific locations, Coppelia is a Cuban diner open 24 hours with good food [3:5]. The Donut Pub on 14th and 7th is also open 24 hours and offers breakfast all day
[2:1]
[2:9]. Cafe Reggio near NYU stays open until 3 AM, providing a late-night option though not quite 24 hours
[2:2].
Challenges of Finding 24-Hour Coffee Shops
The decline in 24-hour coffee shop availability has been noted across discussions. Many users expressed disappointment that NYC, once known as "the city that never sleeps," now has limited late-night coffee options [1:5]
[2:5]. This shift has affected students and night workers who rely on these spaces for studying or working late
[2:12].
Alternative Suggestions
If you're flexible with location, consider exploring other areas like Brooklyn, where some cafes stay open late. Nook in Bushwick is a laptop-friendly spot open late [4:1], and Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery stays open until midnight
[4:4]. For those willing to compromise slightly on ambiance, chains like Dunkin' and select 7-Eleven locations can serve as alternatives
[1:4]
[2:4].
In summary, while NYC may lack dedicated 24-hour coffee shops, diners and select cafes offer viable alternatives for late-night coffee needs.
They are called diners.
Triggered.
Not all diners are 24 hours, most NYC diners have shitty coffee, most definitely don't have WiFi and most won't easily let you work super late without buying food
Also also, there aren't a ton of diners in South Brooklyn (for example; I am assuming this applies to all of the outerboroughs). Getting to the diner on 5th and 9th from Borough Park took >30 minutes by public transit at night. This is a two mile trip that is five minutes by car.
OP wants a place to hang out all night and buy one cup of coffee.
"where tea was once five cents and hot water was free: "So the old men would bring in their own tea bags, drop them into the free water, and then sit for hours talking about the war."
gertel's bakery, hester st, 1930s.
I'm not really looking for a diner though, rather a coffee shop where I can study/work. Free wifi, nice seating, no noise, etc.
Dunkin donuts.
Still sounds like a diner.
Why do you need a 24 hour escape from where you live?
Are you sure you're not looking for a library + BYO coffee?
I often work all night. I used to work all night in 24hr coffee shops.
New York City used to be a 24-hour city. There were diners on every other corner, open all night, and walking uptown or downtown would allow you to smell all kinds of food being made in all-night pizzerias or delis or restaurants.
Sometime in the last 5-7 years, things changed. Starbucks, which used to have a few 24-hour locations, started closing at 10 or 11pm. Diners closed. Pizzerias close earlier. The restaurants and diners that do stay open 24 hours now charge nearly twice as much for menu items, and they are no longer the havens for artists and authors they once were, who would work on new ideas in them throughout the night.
I think the problem is homelessness. If you go to enough late-night haunts, you’ll see regular people empty out, and homeless people settle in. They go there to sleep, to bathe, and to shelter themselves from the elements, whether it be the heat or cold or rain.
I sometimes work all night on projects and see homeless people come into a Starbucks as the first or second customer of the morning, lock themselves in the bathroom, and bathe for the next 20 minutes. It’s the same in a McDonald’s or other restaurant that’s open all night.
These homeless people have money. They can buy a cappuccino and sit at a table for hours, waiting for people to stop noticing them so they can sleep.
I don’t think the problem is people who buy one coffee and sit for nine hours, working on a laptop. Those are the people who are driving the growth of coffee places in general, and there are coffee places everywhere. But the issue, for a business manager, is running a shop that gets filled with homeless people, which has the effect of attracting more homeless people, while driving away everyone else. And, in 2019, no one really wants to tell a homeless person to leave. Everyone knows a paying customer has a right to stay as long as he or she likes and enjoy their coffee. So the solution has been to close the doors earlier, before the “homeless rush” starts, around 11pm or so. (Another solution has been to raise prices to the point where poorer people won’t visit.)
This. NYC is no longer the city that never sleeps. It’s less worse than Boston. But still.
For my nocturnal night-owl status my buddy suggested that I move to Las Vegas. It’s getting pretty bad out there in terms of homeless and operating hours...
So why don't 24 hour diners have this problem?
Most McDonald's locations in midtown are open 24/7
I'm a student in social work school and sometimes I am up late working on school stuff. I prefer to do work outside of my house. I grew up in the city but went to college in Portland, OR. Portland had 24 hour coffee shops and I refuse to believe Portland has amenities that NYC doesn't. Anyone know of any? I know there are 24 hour diners but I would feel kind of like a dick doing work on a laptop in a diner.
That's a good point. But still I feel like with the amount of students in this city it would make sense? I know the library at my school closes at 9pm so there's a definite need for late night studying options. But I guess people ordering 1 coffee wouldn't make it economically feasible.
Cafe Reggio near NYU is open till 3am. I'm not sure what the scene is late at night though.
I think students study the most around finals. A lot of the school's libraries are open 24/7 then. Before Covid, the Think Coffee near NYU used to be open till 10 PM. I think they changed their time a while ago before the pandemic, like maybe a year. I think they were trying to be a coffee and wine bar, and it didn't work out.
Is your school an accredited college/university? Some of NYU's Bobst library study areas are 24 hour.
They do cross honor access for students from certain schools.
Other than this, a membership to a workspace would be the best bet.
Chelsea Square Diner is open 24/7 and they won’t care if you bring a laptop in at 2am. They might give you some grief if you’re sipping on a coffee for two hours during Sunday brunch hours, but late night you will be totally fine.
Not only do the coffee shops miss out on the late night crowds, but they also don’t cater to the early morning commuters. I have to leave my apartment for work at 5:30am each day and so many times I would have purchased a latte en route to the subway, but alas.
This did surprise me about NY. Of the 30 coffee shops near me only a few open at 6:30am, and I couldn’t find any that do earlier than that except for Starbucks but I don’t wanna go there when there’re so many other options
This EXACTLY. Very dissapointed to not be able to find decent coffee for early commuters (hospital workers, construction, night shift etc.) This is NY for crying out loud. The first person to jump on this would make a killing!
Always surprises me how hard it is to get late night coffee. Even the latest Starbucks close at 10:00p (one in Times Square used to be 24/7). I know other big cities like LA have a few 24/7 or at least midnight.
There’s always 7-Eleven (most if not all are 24/7) or the few Dunkin’ locations across the city out of the ~600 already here which are open 24/7.
It’s really sad that this question needs to be asked. There was a time when every part of New York had stores, services, restaurants open 24 hours. Today, it’s only the subway. Worse, everything closes by 10 or even earlier. The sidewalks and streets are dead after that.
Anyway, Coppelia is a really nice Cuban diner next to Donut Pub at 14th and 7th. Both are open 24 hours.
Donut pub is also open 24 hours and the name a mean breakfast all day long.
The Ritz Diner on 62nd has an all night after. I like it a tad more than the Chelsea Square.
It’s a shame so many places are gone and the ones that are still with us are shells of themselves
I know Tick Tock Diner is common or at least used to be. Probably an old school diner is your best bet.
I want somewhere to use my laptop at night time
More coffee shops than cafés, but...
Midnight Express - 89th/2nd
Gracie Corner - 85th/2nd
Ritz Diner - 62nd/1st
Last I saw, Gracie's Corner is closed for renovation
The Gracie's I'm talking about moved from 86th and 2nd to 85th. The original is likely closed because some devpig wants to build a tower.
Tysm
Pretty much only diners are open 24/7
I would use Google maps, search by the "open times" you are looking for, then call the place to confirm they are open when they say they are.
One that actually has good food, mostly Cuban, is Coppelia
Molasses among others are recommended by this late night question from 18 days ago and links to similar questions.
Basically what the title says: I do a lot of laptop-based work at night and my apartment isn't really a particularly cozy or comfortable space for that sort of thing.
I don't particularly mind a bar, but I'm not too keen on drinking every night. Are there any coffee or teashops in the Brooklyn or Manhattan areas where I can go, sit down, enjoy a nice cup of tea, and work until at least ~11 or so?
Martha's Bakery in Williamsburg. Either one.
eataly has a cafe and is open til 11pm
Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery is open to midnight in Brooklyn.
I love High and Dry in Brooklyn! Super lowkey, lovely staff, and it's nice and small. Nook is good but I prefer how cosy and intimate High and Dry feels.
Nook in Bushwick is a huge laptop-friendly coffee shop open late! they have events some nights tho
I came to say this. Yeah, check schedule as they have live music on some nights.
So a friend of mine & I want to make a day out of it in Meatpacking area. Central points of our visit is the Whitney Museum and High Line Park.
I’ve been browsing for ideas to get iced coffee; So far: the lost draft or Kobrick coffee.
We will stop for midday break with a cocktail & light bites at the standard grill.
We’re looking to fill up rest of afternoon so any ideas and recommendations? We like window shopping and check out funky places. Maybe another bar for pre dinner drink?
And dinner somewhere at Meatpacking area: ideas so far.
Catch NYC, Pastis, or Tacombi?
We love seafood, awesome Mexican or any other interesting places that’s good for people watching, cocktails and lively vibe.
Any other recommendations to replace my research for iced coffee, cocktail and dinner places I have so far?
Dinner budget: 200 or less each including drinks and taxes.
I wouldn’t recommend spending this much time in Meatpacking. It’s a very sceney (and new) neighborhood that isn’t particularly interesting to explore or great for dining unless you like expensive chain restaurants like TAO.
My rec: take a 10 min walk over to Hudson, grab a drink at Employees Only or Katana Kitten, and find a nice WV spot for dinner
Second Kitana kitten and also not forcing a full day in Meatpacking
Los Mariscos is great for casual seafood, try that for lunch.
The old homestead steakhouse is ok but I would leave area and head elsewhere.
There's a Starbucks Roaster on 9th & 16th St (?) nearby. Near Chelsea Market too where there are some coffee places inside (Amy's Bakery for one).
Hey guys!
Just spent a few weeks in NY and stayed at my friends apartment near campus -- following them around. I thought I was in the Twilight zone because everyone was working at parks instead of tables where Wi-Fi is!
Sorry but I can't get down with the NY trend of chilling on grass with a Wi-Fi Box.
Tried some cafes -- they were pretty sketchy. I saw a guy with half his face burned off, zonked out of his mind starting at blank laptop from 1998. But he seemed very invested in whatever was on the blank screen.
ANYway -- I decided to throw NY into this digital nomad solution called Plan. ended up finding a really Japanese Cafe in Brooklyn that was open until 11. Also found a georgian bakery with soup dumplings (?)
Guys please try this out and let me know what you think! Would love any suggestions and greatly appreciate any knowledge about the area to make our application better!
Hope it provides value. Ended up finding a nice Italian place tucked off in Cambridge bc of it lol
qahwah house, mokafe, most yemeni coffee spots
Qahwah house is great! Space was a bit loud though. They are open later than most places in the city !
williamsburg one probs quieter
Haraz!! Super cozy and really nice interior, not to mention great coffee and service
Seconded on qahwah and try caffè Reggio
oasis cafe on ave A is opened til 12am!
I'm a bit of a night owl and a lot of the time I just want to go to a coffee shop after 10pm to read my book or work but the only 24 hour shops are DD or McD. For the city that never sleeps I'd think there should be other options for the casual insomniac.
There are 24 hr diners all around NYC, try those?
These kinds of places used to exist, but most seem to have closed down within the past decade or so. Some got priced out because of rent (like a lot of the diners in Manhattan.) But I myself have often wondered why coffee places now close so early - like 9 or even earlier. The few that are open later tend to also sell booze. I'm honestly not sure what accounts for this, but it's incredibly annoying. NY is now much less a 24-hour city than it was when I first moved here.
Its because the only customers at night time are police officers and club goers, so they try to limit it down to only DD and McDonald’s
You just said that Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds are open but if you're looking for something like Starbucks, a majority of their customers are during the day so it doesn't make sense to be open 24 hours.
I think there's still a 24 hour Starbucks in Times Square; that's the only one I know of.
this really isn't a 24 hour city anymore despite how hard you want to believe it. unless you are in a bar or club there is little else to do past midnight.
i think it is a combination of a)raising rent and b)the minimum wage. Due to that, it does not make financial sense to have an business open during the wee early hours of the morning with little to no customers. It is best only open during the day when everyone is out and about
Long story short: i need to finish up some serious work by tomorrow at noon and I'm looking for either a library or 24 hour place that is relatively quiet with wifi that I can utilize overnight. Any help? It doesn't help that tomorrow is Sunday but I'm sure there's somewhere.
Apple store on 5th avenue , it’s usually empty late at night and is open 24/7. I’ve personally sat there and worked on a lot of projects.
That's very good to know!
NYU has a 24 hour library (Elmer Hobbes). You have to pay 40 bucks for access to it, though.
Im also interested in OPs question but it seems like Friends of Bobst (their program that lets non-students use the library) members are only allowed in from 7am to 1am.
wait -- is it 40 bucks each time or like a one time fee?
Bobst is a Federal Repositary for government documents and any member of the public can access the library on weekdays during normal business hours. You are theoretically restricted to the 6th floor where the federal document collection is housed but no need to pay $40 just to get into the place. No idea if they’ll kick you out after 5 pm - I’ve never tried to stay that long.
Is that for, like, a year pass or one-time? I am looking at the site and not really finding an answer outside of the 3 and 10 visit passes.
> 40 bucks for access to it,
It this fee per-visit or an annual membership of some kind?
skylight diner isn't too loud and is open 24 hours. don't know about wifi though.
L'Express is more central, 24 hours, but also more crowded. don't know about wifi
Donut Pub
((Elmer Holmes Bobst))
There are 24 hour diners in NYC that should be pretty quiet overnight.
You may have to keep buying at least some food/coffee so they don't kick you out.
I’m into quiet, cozy spots—somewhere that’s great for reading and getting work done. Any favorites?
If you love cozy, quiet vibes, check out Grounded in the West Village, lots of natural light and plants, plus great coffee. Also the love Everyman Espresso in SoHo for a chill work-friendly spot. Let us know what neighborhood you’re in!
Chelsea. Plants & Macrame are a real turn-off.
If you’re into quiet, cozy spots, I highly recommend Birch Coffee (especially the Flatiron location) great vibe for reading and they have a little library corner too. Also love Everyman Espresso in SoHo for solid coffee and a chill atmosphere. Perfect for working or just unwinding!
In Sunset Park we run a coffee lab where we do barista workshops. We also roast coffee and have a variety of drinks available during our workshops. Check out the website. Brewedbyjose.com some of the best coffee you'll ever taste!
