TL;DR
Many bars in NYC are open until 4 AM, especially in nightlife-centric areas like the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village. Notable mentions include McCoy's Pub, Kettle of Fish, Stonewall, Blind Tiger, Barrow St Ale House, Marie’s Crisis, Cellar Dog, and Arthur’s Tavern [1:1]
[5:1].
Popular Areas for Late-Night Bars
The Lower East Side (LES), Greenwich Village, and Chelsea are known for their vibrant nightlife and have numerous bars that stay open until 4 AM [1:2]. These areas tend to attract a crowd looking to party late into the night, with many establishments catering to this demand
[2:1]
[2:2].
Specific Bars Open Until 4 AM
Several specific bars were mentioned as being open until 4 AM. McCoy's Pub near Times Square is one such spot [1:1]. In Sheridan Square, bars like Kettle of Fish, Stonewall, Blind Tiger, Barrow St Ale House, Marie’s Crisis, Cellar Dog, and Arthur’s Tavern are popular choices for those seeking late-night drinks
[5:1].
Legal Restrictions on Serving Alcohol
Under New York State law, bars must stop serving alcohol by 4 AM, although they can remain open without serving alcohol [4:1]. This means last call typically happens around 3:30 or 3:45 AM
[5:1]. Each bar has its own license detailing when it can serve alcohol, which usually ends at 2 AM or 4 AM
[4:9].
Post-Pandemic Changes
Post-pandemic, many bars have resumed their pre-pandemic hours, allowing them to stay open until 4 AM [3:2]. However, some bars may still close earlier if business is slow
[3:3]. The return of 24/7 subway service has also facilitated late-night operations for bars and restaurants
[2:11].
For anyone planning a late-night outing in NYC, it's advisable to check current operating hours online or directly contact the establishment, as hours may vary depending on the day and neighborhood.
now post-pandemic?
Hey so I'm in NYC for the first time in about a year due to the pandemic and I subway to a couple of my favorite haunts last night, including Jimmy's Corner near Times Square, only to find out they're closed LOL. So does anyone know of any bars - preferably near Times Square where I'm staying but doesn't really matter - in Manhattan that are open past 2am? Thanks!!!
Try downtown. Times Square is not in the same state of reopening as other parts of the city are. Also, it's July 4th weekend, so a lot of people are probably out of the city despite the weather.
Lower East Side, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, etc.
Nearly every bar is open till 4am now that was before. Meaning, lol yes motherfucker, you can party till 4am basically at every bar. Leave times square unless you're eating at olive garden, which I highly recommend. Unlimited breadsticks
Can you name one or two bars as examples? The couple I went to last night were closed.
It’s more only a couple bars that aren’t open.
YMMV, but in my experience:
Wilfie & Nell, Holiday Cocktail Lounge, The Wayland, The Spaniard, Bua, Mother’s Ruin, Goodnight Sonny’s, Tree House

Basically everywhere between Murray Hill and Murray St.
McCoy's Pub on 9th between 52nd and 51st. No food, just drinks and a good vibe. They stay open until 3:30-4am
Moving to NYC I got surprised by the amount of stuff that shuts down early. After 10pm there seems to be little open (at least in my area) besides fast foods and the odd deli. There's also not that many people out and subway service is very sparse. Personally I don't mind at all, in fact I like it, but I did expect NYC to be much more "around the clock" but instead it seems pretty similar to the European city I come from.
Some folks told me it's primarily because of Covid and that seems to be a long lasting change.
I don't live in the nightlife areas like West Village though so that might be different.
What bars are open until 4 am? All the bars in my neighborhood that used to stay open until 2 now start shutting down at 11.
Check out bars in the LES. Sing Sing on Ave A also stays open until 3-4 on the weekends, karaoke bars are fun when nobody has any sense left in them.
I don't have a list, but I'd say the popular ones where the party kids hang out. Your neighborhood place will close early if there are only a couple people around, but if the joint is jumping, they'll go all the way to last call.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that all bars close at 4.
The bars below my house close at 5am everyday including weekdays
If you open Google maps > search bar > filter icon > custom > pick a day like Saturday > pick a time like 3am > you’ll see all the bars claiming to be open at that day and time
A lot of bars in Brooklyn and Manhattan stay open until 4 am
This was so weird to me - I'm from a medium big city in Europe and even here clubs are open until at least 6am. Partying in NYC was..surprising, seeing as we got thrown out at 4am sharp lol. Didn't expect that at all in a city such as NYC!! Was it like that before the pandemic as well?!
I mean in Berlin it’s more out there of the 3 day party scenes and stuff but many other places in Europe close way earlier other than places in Germany, but tbh in New York it’s more of who you know if you want to go the party’s past 4am. Nowadays/ mister Sunday have 24hr parties thrown every last Sunday of the Month. There are parties that even go on until 10 am. You just have to know people at first I thought it synced until I found the right crowd and the underground night life in Nyc can not be matched even when I went to Berlin berghain was beautiful but places here are like that.
Certainly varies by neighborhood
Jackson Heights is alive until all hours of the night (and not even partying, just people living life and working weird hours)
Once the subway was back to 24/7, that was what enabled restaurants and bars to go back to staying open late.
The one thing I have noticed not come back is CVS's / Duane Reade's being 24/7. Not only did a lot of them close permanently, but they now close at around 10 pm. Bodegas being open more than make up for it, but that feels like one of the last pieces missing from before COVID.
There’s a CVS by where I live (ridgewood) that’s 24/7
Cvs in forest hills/rego park is still 24/7
with the midnight curfew over now, we back???
Can be. Bars are now able to decide what to do moving forward. They can extend hours to whatever their legal last call was pre-pandemic. And they can choose to check guests’ vaccine status and lift all other mandates if they keep unvaccinated guests outside or social distanced in their own area.
I’m pretty sure it’s up to them but I have no clue. My regular bar in the UES has been closing around 11 or midnight if it’s not busy. They told me it’s just not worth it to stay open for only a few people. Then last week I was at a crowded bar downtown and they still did last call at 12:30.
I left Sophie’s at 4am last night, and the spot I work at is 2am for now but moving to 4am once it start to show signs of more movement.
Man, what do people even do at bars till 4am? Do you get there at midnight or are we talking 9 pm ish?
I've only ever done it a couple times here, back when all my friends were around and I could drink like 12 pbrs and be fine the next day. Also, once was at Barcade where you at least have video games to stay occupied.
I couldn't imagine just paying for bar drinks and sitting around talking to people all night.
Maybe that's just cuz I'm a married old coot now.
Truthfully, (and this is coming from a bartender) I’m not someone who stays til 4 usually, I’m in bed early when I can be. We had a really good dinner at frank a few blocks away with some friends and I think everyone was just fucking happy to finally be able to stay out late at a bar. But yeah 4am is usually no-go for me and I’m still feeling it today.
as someone who gets off work at 11:30pm. I appreciate a bar closing at 4am.
Yeah only times I can think of staying at that last was if I went to a club. Like you said there’s something else to do then drink. But there’s no way I’m just sitting at a bar on a Friday/Saturday night till 4 am without an ambulance coming to pick me up lol
Sometimes ya gotta rage
anytime I've popped out til 4 Im not getting to said bar until 11-1. Usually leave the house around 9 and link at a friends crib then pop out from there
I want to know when are they opening back the Rose Bar at the gramercy hotel
Sadly it doesn't look like any time soon - the future of the hotel itself is uncertain.
Wow, thank you!
Or do they shut for a few hours only.
Not as many things are open 24/7 as you might think, in NYC. It genuinely surprised me when I moved here.
Different bars have different terms to their licenses. Legal closing time is 4 AM, though not all bars stay open that late.
Yeah, don't expect many places opened until 4 am on a Monday (though there's always a few open).
Same goes for Buffalo.
Under NY state law, establishments must stop serving alcohol by 4 a.m., however the actual closing time is left up to each of New York's 62 counties. The 4 a.m. time applies in New York City; clubs and bars may remain open without serving alcohol; they may start serving at 7 a.m. except on Sunday when sales begin at noon.
Yep, to put things in perspective there's only 3 counties outside of NYC where bars are opened until 4 am.
People will actually cross the border from Niagara County where bars close at 2 am, into Erie County to keep on partying.
I’m pretty sure they have to stop serving alcohol at 4 AM, so that’s generally when they close.
Why do you have those closing times for bar but not for supermarkets? Do clubs have to close this early as well? When do people in general go to a club? In my country ypu usually go to a club around midnight or maybe 1 am. I think the latest I went was 6 am on a Sunday...
The bar can stay open, it just can’t serve alcohol, same with a club, and same with the grocery store. I’m not much of a club kid but 11 PM-Midnight isn’t an unheard of start time.
In Buffalo, most people go out between 10 pm and Midnight and stay out until 2 am and 4 am.
Often getting some drunken eats around 5 am.
Actually confuses visitors who go out at 8 or 9 and don't realize places don't start to get crowded until midnight.
They sure as heck are in Las Vegas! And not just tourist places, either. A surprising number of local bars go 24/7. Live there long enough and you might literally start to forget what that thing called 'last call' is.
Not as fun as it sounds, though. Every once in a while I'd lose track of time and I'd walk outside of the dark barroom just as the sun was coming up. Right in my alcohol bloated face. It made me feel like fucking Dracula, every time. Like, "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, I have to walk home in this!!!!!"
Each bar has a licence that details when they are allowed to sell alcohol. Usually that ends at 2am or 4am.
3am in Indianapolis. We just gotta be a bit different.
You wacky Hoosiers, you're alright.
Not trying to be pedantic, but none (legally at least) - last call is usually 3:30-45 at places that are open til 4 as at 4am they can no longer legally serve.
If you’re wondering which ones are OPEN til 4, a lot of the older spots near Sheridan Square fit the bill. Kettle of Fish, Stonewall, Blind Tiger, Barrow St Ale House, Marie’s Crisis, etc. Cellar Dog (previously Fat Cat) and Arthur’s Tavern both stay open til 4 on the weekends. Also - Coppelia is once again open 24/7, and they have a full liquor license as well.
I will give Arthur’s a try. Two weekends ago I walked up and down the Village on a Wednesday at midnight and could not find a spot for anyone over 25 that was still open.
How old are you and what is your ideal bar vibe? I know that neighborhood real well.
for some reason i thought NYC was the the city that never slept
I remember sometimes in the UES in the early 2000s, when the bars closed we would just go to one of the neighborhood diners and keep the party going. I remember one or two which had actual bars in the diner which would serve. I'm not sure if this was legal, or just not enforced.
Many on the LES. Generally Friday and Saturday is 2-4, and then weekdays as early as midnight.
You can filter google map results by “open now” so the next time you’re up past 2am this might be a good way to find places
I’ve found the map results are completely off these days.
Seriously, of the already pathetically small number of bars that are even open past midnight nowadays, none of the ones I've tried have the kitchen open.
Is there any place that's holding down the fort for the people who aren't living like Manhattan is the fucking suburbs?
crazy how different it is across the river. BK has bars and food open until 2-4AM on a regular basis. And I grew up in the city lol
I'm actually based in Queens anyway, so if you have BK spots, that's probably closer than the voyage I made tonight. My go to late spot down there has been The Narrows, but I've never really looked for late night pubs or anything.
Which bars are these?? Would love to know especially if you have anything non-Bushwick/Wburg (nothing against the neighborhood, just pretty hard to get from me)
At least in park slope, Freddy’s Bar usually has food late
Gowanus gardens has food til 1am most of the week and 2am Friday Saturday
Mother’s Ruin and Swift both have food till at least 3am everyday.
Commodore’s kitchen stays open till around 1 I think at both locations.
More a diner than a bar but Coppelia is 24 hours, serving booze till 4, and has much better food than Remedy.
It's true that diners like Coppelia are often the real saviors for late-night food, especially when you're not in a specific bar district. So many spots close kitchens early.
I really miss the old pre-Covid era NYC where the night life was 24/7/365 never close open 7 days a week. Those were amazing times.
the days of happiness when you could go drink in the west village, walk to washington sq and chill until you were less fucked up then walk some more to a random diner at like 4am to watch the sunset with friends. The last time we did that was… psh… pre-covid. Now it’s scary to take the train so i take uber or just drive. The only reason i’m holding to nyc is because my wife was born here, but i’m seriously out of love with this city, idk how to fall in love with it again.
After covid people started going out earlier, most places are dead by midnight, depending where u are in the city.
idk if it will, I wfh and every weekend I am looking for things to do and places to see and bars to go to until past 1am. The last nice place was schmuck, but no food past midnight, and closed before 2am, then you walk around east village and there’s nothing to do and you are welcomed by a bunch of weirdos. Bleh.
NYC, still not back
Can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. Just wondering if there are certain bars that do open earlier for that overnight crowd whose 5pm starts at 5am or something along those lines I do apologize if this is not the place for that. I heard the hotel Im staying at does have a bar, but I believe they open much later than Im anticipating. I'll be working on the eastside of manhatten commuting between Noho/East villlage area (i guess) towards Tudor City/Murray hill? Again as you can tell I'm not from here just hangin around for a week next month.
Plenty of Irish pubs in midtown open 24/7. Check out the ones from 5th to 6th between 43rd and 46th. Search on Yelp with the map in that specific area
Fuck yeah! Thanks you the man! My googling skills are not the best hahaha
Legally bars can't serve alcohol from 4-8am so good luck. Most aren't 24/7 they open at 8am
Scroll through this 24 hour list, some offer a bar:
https://www.gayot.com/restaurants/best-newyork-ny-top10-open-24-hours_1ny.html
kinda just focused on drinking tho but thanks
I believe spring lounge opens at 8 am still. Milanos and international bar may still as well. I'm not sure 100% on post-pandemic hours. GL, op.
Also was going to suggest spring lounge.
Rudy’s is open from 8am-4am
Hey! I’m flying in Friday, October 10 for NYCC then have a return flight 7am Saturday morning at LGA. My itinerary ends around 11pm Friday night, any good recommendations on how to kill 4ish hours before I go back to the airport? I was thinking a midnight movie but it would also be fun to hit up a dancey bar/club. Open to any late night/24 hour suggestions that keep me around Manhattan!

What are places that’s open 24 hours?
Some cvs and Duane Reade’s
Bunch of scattered diners.
Precincts
A lot less than there used to be.
The Apple Store on Fifth Ave.
The latest the clubs been closing is 4 am in ktown, I usually get food after but I was wondering if there’s any good spots to go to after that until like 9 or 10 am
Hit up a diner or go home and head to bed??
Let the kid party
Brooklyn doesn’t sleep..scan resident advisor.
Yes — any number of the after hours parties in Brooklyn.
Where in Brooklyn?
Get on ebikes and ride around the city while the sun rises
This all the way… my bff and I rode a Citibike from the UN to the LES at 5am on a summer night. The streets were ours alone
It's unmatched. After a night of stimulants there's nothing better to bring you back to earth, and it always ends with a good breakfast.
This!!! Some of the best riding is that middle of the morning / sunrise.
This post is brought to you by coke
Lmfao.. like if not just go to bed then maybe rehab 🤪
Go home? Tf
