TL;DR
Dual Blades (Firearm Blades)
The Dual Blades, particularly the Firearm Blades, are highly praised for their versatility and effectiveness. They allow players to attack continuously while maintaining full health due to their healing on clash ability [1:4]. The firearm blades also offer a dodge move that positions you behind enemies, making them ideal for quick successive attacks and staggering humanoid opponents
[1:5]. Players have expressed that these blades make combat more engaging and fun, even considering them the best weapon for a "revenge tour" in New Game+
[1:7].
Ghost Weapons
Among the ghost weapons, Kunai and Sticky Bombs stand out as favorites. Kunai is often ranked as one of the best due to its instant kill potential and utility in various situations [5:1]. Sticky Bombs are appreciated for their ability to deal with groups of enemies effectively, providing both humor and usefulness in combat scenarios
[2:3],
[2:8]. Smoke Bombs are also highly regarded for their strategic advantage in creating opportunities for stealth attacks
[5:2].
Armor and Charms
While not a weapon per se, the choice of armor and charms can significantly enhance your combat capabilities. For instance, the Kensei armor is favored for its synergy with ghost weapons, allowing players to stagger and pick off enemies efficiently [3:2]. Additionally, charms like the Charm of Shinatsuhiko and Charm of Inari’s Might can augment melee damage and provide uninterruptible attacks, further enhancing combat effectiveness
[3:3],
[3:5].
Claymore-like Weapons
For those interested in claymore-like weapons, options such as the Iron Greatsword and Claymore are recommended. These weapons offer unique movesets and are suitable for players seeking strong, versatile swords [4:1],
[4:2]. The Claymore, with its piercing fang combos, is particularly noted for its effectiveness in combat
[4:2].
In summary, the best weapon in Ghost of Tsushima largely depends on personal playstyle preferences. However, the dual blades, especially the firearm variant, along with certain ghost weapons like Kunai and Sticky Bombs, are frequently highlighted for their effectiveness and fun factor.
Hard take: The firearm blades (dualt) is the best weapon in the game.
I see a lot of talk on how the Twin Bandits are the best dual blades. Doesn’t make sense to most the time to block when you have clash or can just dodge.
The block ability works only with weapon wielding enemies. The “perfect shot” ability the firearm blades has works as a dodge. As you’re light attacking you can pop off your L1 as a dodge and continue attacking. Literally in quick succession as many times as needed. And it’s staggering them if they are humanoid, if they are not you can constantly keep the pressure up.
PLUS, it does poise damage. It’s honestly insane. Yes the twin bandits have better scaling and raw damage. Not enough to discredit the combat style the firearm blades provides. I’ve tested both for a while and to me, firearm blades comes out on top.
Subjective to personal opinion and play style of course.
Lashing whip for me.
Ngl, the lashing whip was my go to until dual blades but it’s still S tier and probably the best all around weapon. I’m just personally having more fun with dual but yeah, lashing whip is insane
I’m thinking of doing ng+ and I def want to completely switch weapon types. Dual blades is sounding tasty
I swing at nothing but air with dual blades thanks to the lashing whip spoiling me rotten. It's reach is supreme
Ol' faithful. All through playthrough 1 and then used Leech dual bandits for NG+ and the lashing whip just works so well for larger enemies.
Lashing whip and Dual Bandits are my go to's
Nah the steamspear literally trivializes all non-large bosses. Easiest parry skill in the game to build up combo points, then use the weapon skill to turn the enemy around and hit them with a heavy attack to break their poise instantly
I try it, is not the same, dual blades just let you atack everything and be at full health all the time ebcause of the ehaling on clash
Spear is nice and strong but any big damage you recieve you wont be healing it fast with it
With dual blades yu usually never use a single pot for entire chapters while playing like a monkey
Been using them solely since I picked them up. Gun swords with a super good dodge move that usually puts you behind the enemy whilst doing a ton of stagger? Love it!
Agree, I was going to experiment in NG+ but those blades are just so good for a revenge tour.
A man of culture I see. I’m towards then end of my first playthrough wanting to experiment but… they are so good..
I used this on my gun playthrough and it made every human boss totally free. Shoot, clash clash, shoot loop.
Exactly!!! And I mix some dark frost edge dodges in there then back to shoot clash clash shoot
I picked Kunai (maybe I was Forced to I can’t remember) m. What did you guys pick for your second? Was thinking of wind chime? Or what’s the best to get this early that would be useful?
Thanks in advance!
Sticky Bomb second upgrade can destroy groups of 10-15 mongols easy
Personally I've found the sticky bombs super helpful in a sticky situation.
Yeah they are like an instant win if arrows aren’t doing the trick
Hahahahaha that’s funny and good to know! Thank you.
After unlocking all the ghost weapons the Kunai is one of the best, imo, a close second is the black powder bombs, I rarely find myself using the wind chimes, although they do have there pros in some cases.
Try the chimes with the charm that makes them poison enemies who pick them up. You can wipe out 8 enemies easy.
I didn’t know this existed thanks!
About the black powder bombs, I have aim assist turned on because I cant aim for crap on the console. Works great for bows but when I try to trow a bomb it just locks on to the furthest target and keeps snapping back. its near impossible to trow it effectively for me :(
I picked smoke bomb>sticky bomb>wind chime>black powder bomb
Sticky Bomb because i thought it would be a good combination of hilarious and useful. I was not disappointed
What’s the best build you guys have found to plow through hordes of Mongolians?
As someone who uses a lot of ghost weapons my favorite armor is the kensei. I finished the game and haven't fully upgraded the damage of the Kunai. Too OP to instantly kill. I just enjoy staggering and picking them off one by one
I like this Gosaku build:
I tried using the charm of Shinatsuhiko, but I didn't notice anything happening. What does it actually do?
Exactly what it says. You get 6 seconds of uninterruptible attacks after you stagger someone, which is more than enough to snuff out several Mongols.
Sakai Clan armor was my favorite as you can kill up to 5 mongols in a stand off
Ghost armour max and offence charms and increased parry window charm.
Specific charms?
My general purpose armor towards the end was Ghost with Inari Might, 1 ferocity, Silence, 2 fortune and increase Terrify major charm. Killing 1 enemy would usually send another dropping for an easy kill (or just let him flee). Most broken was probably infinite arrows with Tadayori or infinite resolve with Kensei.
I’ve beaten the game a few times but now wanna try it with a claymore like sword and I’m looking for recommendations. Keep in mind I’m not that good so I would prefer for it to be strong, but I don’t need some cheese thing.
Claymore thanks to its unique poke moveset (much like the zweihander) Piercing fang into R2 and R2 into piercing fang combos nicely, storm stomp into R2 makes NPC's very very easy.
Or the knights greatsword thanks to its unique R1 moveset and hit combos it can pull off.
Or zweihander with lightning slash for a devastating combo, full slash into R2.
All three are absolutely superb weapons that are really fun to get used to.
Claymore
Claymore
Technically speaking, the Iron Greatsword is the best Greatsword class weapon with most affinities. But there are slightly better Greatswords for specific builds.
What kind of stats are you looking to focus on?
IMO, the generally strongest build while leveling with a greatsword is a cold claymore or bastard sword, upgrading to a banished Knight Greatsword if one drops. Otherwise using the Gargoyle Greatsword once you're able to defeat the Valiant Gargoyles. And then eventually an iron Greatsword if you farm one in Leyndell or Haligtree.
This is mainly a STR build, but gains benefit from int and Dex to lesser degrees. The primary ash of war is Impaling Thrust due to having a fast combo alternating with R2.
How would you rank the Ghost weapons from best to worst? And why? Is the order of which you think they should be unlocked the same as how you would rank them when they’re fully upgraded? Why or why not?
From the way I play
Smoke Kunai Chime Blowgun Fire cracker Sticky fire Black fire bomb
IMO:
The only reason the sticky bomb and black powder bomb are so low is because explosive arrows exist and do basically the exact same thing, but are easier to find ammo for. I don't think any of them are bad though, even the black powder bomb has its uses.
Generally I agree.. except I'd made the Wind Chimes number 1 when used with the charm that makes them deadly. Besides the effectiveness, I love how freaked out they get when they witness the someone die from it. Often one will even run away. Bwahaha!!

I know the uchigatana has bleed but is it better then the greatsword
Just use something you like for a while. You will eventually start finding weapons that are really interesting and unique that you will want to try. Uchi is great and could be used for the entire game. Pretty much anything can be used the entire game if you like it.
I ended up using the uchigatana through base game and dlc, so i need a new weapon to run with
If you've beaten the game already, I am surprised you are asking this question. There is relatively little difference between the power of weapons in ER.
Every weapon can be taken to the end of the DLC and even the Overpowered SSS Tier weapon category has like 15-20 options.
i love the greatsword movesets, i find them the most versatile
Any greatsword suggestions
Banished Knight’s GS. It has the DS2 Claymore 2H light attacks.
Greatsword. It's a great sword
claymore is always my go-to
you get it really early too
They're two completely different weapons, one is a DEX bleed sword the other is a STR colossal sword. If you're DEX go with Uchi, if STR go with Greatsword.
Use the bloodhounds fang and finesse through the whole game
You are comparing apples to oranges. Within their respective weapon classes, they are both among the best picks. But it's like asking which is best of a bike or a train when you need to travel somewhere.
I would do a little googling about weapon scaling and how stats affect your play style - it’ll help a lot in the long run!
Hey folks. Just done with the game and starting ng+. With 138 stat what’s a real bad ass weapon set I can begin with. I did the first one with the nagakiba(boss fights) and Dual handed with uchigatana for the rest of the game.
I am looking at scavengers curved sword which I just got. Any good recommendations? ☮️
Ate like a KING
Colossals might be a nice change of pace. The Prelate Crozier is very fun. Twinblades too- the Godskin Peeler has unique heavies. Twin rapiers are also really strong and the moveset looks awesome. If you have the DLC, or a friend owns it, you can get the Backhand Blades or the Beast Claws by asking them to drop them for you. Messmer's spear is also great.
Found this. Thought it was interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntvgcT__8dA
Sorry I know this is a bit old now, since this game is going to be so big as in open world I imagine there will be customization of some sort.
With ghost in the title maybe there will be some ninja or shinobi elements. My weapons wishlist if there's more than just swords.
1: Kama and or Kusarigama 2: Tekko Kagi / claws 3: Bow 4: Bombs
Katana
Ehrmmm katana?
What's that?
Yeah, there’s no good samurai game without a katana. I even would like to see wakizashi in the game. The sai doesn’t really match for a samurai game in my opinion
I tried various weapons (spear, odachi, axe), I am currently in midgame in my first overall playthroughy (bought on an PS5 sale). But Tonfas really maximized the fun, versus bosses (esp. humans) it is a blast to play! Formerly used an axe and it was strong, but slower and fights were more tactical than speedy. I still use may crushing axe versus very hard and stubborn enemies, but Tonfas became now my main weapon. I am running axe and Tonfas since both share similar attribute scaling.
Any advanced combat tips to share? E.g. status effects with fire talisman work pretty well, which armor would support this playstyle? Thx in advance
I loved susano set, with a purity set up, and tonfa gun of course.
Tonfa flows so well its really easy to keep versatility and confusion up.
Late game having a constitution and courage scroll makes you feel unstoppable.
Don't fall into a noob trap of spamming pulverize. That skill is great as link between combos, but just ok at everything else.
Wild Lions has insane status buildup. Can put fire, water, lightning arcana in each stance (I'd just use oni bi soul core instead though).
Tiger Bite is the best tonfa skill. Staggers, ducks under horizontal swipes, gives you frame advantage.
Shove in high stance is very fast ki damage move.
High stance strong into heavenly chain has insane momentum and distance coverage.
Tonfa Gun makes Devastation into health bar destroyer. Crimson Lotus with tonfa gun can push you back enough to outspace enemy attacks.
Focused Strike is a great opener. Knocks humans on their ass too.
Mountain Breaker is not a true airborne move, can jump over only selected attacks.
Both parries suck. Thousand Tongues can be parried on successful parry. Dragonslayer leaves you open in the air for punish.
Double Kick for blocking humans, deals good break.
Sweep Kick deals a lot of ki damage, ducks under horizontal swings.
Any advice on which arcanas to put where? Outside of wild lions for elemental procs I struggle to tell what's really having an effect
Do you mean all the active skill customizations? First decide where to assign Masterful Slice (extra ki damage). For tonfa good options are Shove and Sweeping Kick or Double Kick but it’s a little slow for my taste and I use the others more often. Assuming you’re using Tonfa Gun put stat bonus on the gun skills Devastation and Crimson Lotus, or Focused Strike is a good option too. The rest of the modifiers are less impactful IMO and some I never use, like the one preventing ki pulse.
Not really tbh. I personally dislike arcanas myself, so never use them. Maybe somebody else could chime in here.
Damn and here I am just spamming Dragon Dance and loving life I really am the dumbest “ok” Tonfa user
Well, Dragon Dance is a pretty powerful move, like most splitstaff moves.
Tonfa's Pulverize however is just ok. There are better health damage moves. Better ki damage moves. Better status application moves. Better 0 ki combo extension moves.
Extranice, thank you so much for sharing these insights and tips! Will definitely try out a lot
As a Tonfa main Let me recommend you a build, If you love playing aggresive with tonfa. Find and equip these;
-Tonfa (any you prefer),
-Conquerors set (from older Nobunaga),
-Hyobishin guardian spirit (from younger Nobunaga), equip; Kasha, Tate Eboshi or Shuten Doji soul core,
-join Toyotomi Clan,
-Equip Medicine case or Magatama types accessories (reroll through blacksmith until you get life recovery with amrita absorption).
The idea is to sustain aggression and generate amrita as much as possible, by spamming the heavy attack (HA) before transitioning to other techniques.
Conqueror set lets you extract amrita with heavy attacks and tonfa's HA can generate a lot of amrita per combo.
With enough "life recovery with amrita absorption" from reroll on the torso and accessories, you can sustain aggression with relative safety as you heal while attacking.
Next, Hyobishin give you 30% chance of dispelling most ailment (fire, water, lightning, corruption, purity, confusion, poison, paralytic build up, stench, Ki down) by hitting enemy with HA, since tonfa's mid stance HA hits multiple times per hit, it increases the chance of dispelling ailment as you attack.
Also, most buffs from accessories (DEF UP, KI REC UP, LIFE REGEN) and soul cores (like Shuten Doji's; DEF UP , Tate Eboshi's; ATK UP or Kasha's; MOVE SPEED UP) are activated by absorbing amrita, if you have those equip you can activate the buffs by simply hitting the enemy with HA.
So, with this build you can maintain aggression while buffing, healing and dilpelling most ailment. This build has carried me from NG all the way through the depths.
Furthermore, this build is also pretty flexible, it can fit other playstyle or weapons as you gain more experience, new equipments, new graces and face different challenges.
Hope this helps and Goodluck
I main tonfas as well, and I usually run a lighter armor set. Granted, the style I play the game relies more on dodging than blocking (unless I have no choice), kinda like hit fast and move out of the way before they have a chance to counter and it's worked out well for me so far.
P.s. not sure if it really matters in the end, but there is a skill unlock in the tonfa tree that increases your damage based on how light your gear is.
You can demon dance through grab attacks. If you really wanna play this game on the edge, that's how you do it...
I'm going to state the obvious, Tonfas pairs extremely well with the Toyotomi clan and extraction talisman, it hits very frequently and the life recovery is georgeous
Lightsaber
stick
Shotgun
Seduction
No horse option? I'm gonna run over everyone I can.
