Improving Last Hitting in DOTA 2

Understanding the Mechanics

Last hitting is a fundamental skill in DOTA 2 that requires precise timing and understanding of your hero's attack animation. One effective strategy is to pay attention to the ranged creep, as it deals significant damage and often sets the threshold for when a creep can be killed [1:1]. Additionally, knowing how much damage you and your allies (including towers) deal to creeps is crucial; this allows you to time your attacks effectively [5:8].

Training and Practice Modes

There are several training modes available to help improve last hitting skills. The "Training Polygon" is a popular choice among players, offering a realistic setting against a Sniper bot [1:7], [4:5]. Practicing in these modes can help you get familiar with different heroes' attack animations and improve your consistency [4:4]. Regular practice, such as dedicating 30 minutes before queuing each day, can significantly enhance your last-hitting ability [4:2].

Creep Aggro and Positioning

Managing creep aggro is another important aspect of last hitting. Drawing creep aggro can help reposition creeps to make them harder for opponents to deny or contest [1:5]. For ranged heroes, standing as close as possible to the target creep can minimize projectile flight time and improve last hit accuracy [1:2]. Practicing these techniques can give you an edge in contested lanes.

Settings and Techniques

Different players prefer different settings for last hitting. Some use the "A stop" method, which involves using the 'A' key to initiate attacks and the 'S' key to cancel animations, allowing for precise control over attack timing [5:1], [5:7]. Others prefer right-click force attack, but this can lead to positioning issues if misclicked [5:5]. Experimenting with different settings and finding what works best for you is key.

Mindset and Consistency

Ultimately, improving at last hitting comes down to consistent practice and patience. While some find the mechanic tedious, others see it as a measure of skill [2:1]. Regular practice, both in training modes and real games, will gradually build proficiency. As one user noted, the skill can deteriorate if not practiced regularly, so maintaining consistency is important [1:4].

ORIGINAL POST

I can reach 80% in the last hitting tutorial, but I'm much worse in real games. Is it possible to fight a bot at last-hitting through unlimited waves, always at level 1?

Any other tips to improve?

Get your damage to 60 using branches or faerie early game. If last hitting under t1, for ranged creeps, allow tower to hit 3x, then easy last hit after. 6x for melee. . But prepare to start your attack animation as the towet projectile flies so enemy cant deny.

Draw aggro

If ranged hero, draw aggro, then stand as close as possible (as safely too) to the creep to minimize projectile flight time.

Watch the projectile animation of the ranged creep as it deals the most damage., then try attacking imediately after the ranged creep's attack land.

Idk this last one but sometimes when i play exort invoker (high atk damage) you can use his range (projectile flight time) to secure last hit. Idk how to explain it.

Im mid crusader lvl so take with a grain of salt.

Pretty sure that since the tower damage changes several patches ago, you want to get to 70 damage In order to last hit on a melee creep without pre hitting it under tower (if the only variables are your damage plus tower damage)

You can try the training polygon lh challenge. It's pretty good, IMO, and puts you up against a Sniper bot.

You can find it in arcade games.

This is an amazing mode. I play it until I have 20 more hits than misses. Some days I get it immediately, some days I'm on the struggle bus and it takes forever. When I get lazy and skip it for a few weeks, my last hitting deteriorates to the point where it's painful to watch myself miss creeps.

Yes, just checked. Go to arcade and search for polygon. Training polygon is what you are after and then select LH challenge. It looks like it is still working even though the last update was in July.

practice with training polygon and abuse drawing creep aggro to get creeps to a spot where they're harder to contest (or at bare minimum force the opposing laner to have to make choices between denying and getting their own last hits). if your issue is missing free cs though it really is just a matter of practicing.

Drawing creep Aggro to move the lane eq is only half the trick. What you actually want to practice is dragging creep Aggro when a creep is in kill range so the enemy can't deny it or punish you for last hitting.

A tip I was told way back in dota 1; pay attention to the ranged creep. It does the most damage and usually defines the "threshold" for when you can kill a creep. Time your last hit for right after the projectile hits, and you'll get way better at last hitting.

If you can't last hit in actual games, you're either getting stressed by variables or you're getting fucked with. In case of the latter, use creep aggro to pull creeps towards you when one is getting low; this makes it harder for them to deny as it's walking away from them. Build more damage; it sounds obvious but it's important, and an early stat item or two will often pay for itself if it secures you two or three more last hits. Bully the enemy; if you think you can't get a last hit, pretend like youre going for it, then get a few hits on the enemy when they go for the deny. Do this when you have more creeps or when youve aggroed creeps in the last 3 seconds (their aggro will be on cooldown and they wont attack you). You'll make them think twice about denying and it can buy you space. Get good enough at bullying and you can force them out of lane for even more space.

In the case of the former, relax and focus on what's relevant. When going for a last hit, let yourself tunnel vision a bit, just while you're learning. When you start to get better, you can add more variables to consider (like enemy spells, who is showing on map, what you'll do after the last hit etc) but don't stress yourself out about random variables that you aren't yet good enough to predict or react to. Just focus on the timing of the last hit, and exactly how much health they need to be at before you should hit them.

I've tried getting into DOTA 2 on multiple occasions, but this one mechanic has been putting me off because I personally just find it tedious. Why not just have a mechanic where the last hero to hit the creep within ~5 seconds gets gold for killing the creep?

It would be way too easy to get gold and games would feel like turbo for carries but the same for supports resulting in even worse support experience. Making last hitting hard creates a better distribution of skill.

One model situation: you got wave pushed under your tower. A 6k+ MMR player would easily get 3 to 4 last hots from those 4 creeps. A 1k MMR player would be very happy to get 1. With your change, both players would always get all 4 creeps as one hit to the creep almost anytime would give them gold.

LieutenantEvident · OP · 5 years ago

I think my suggestion could use some work. Maybe lower the time to a couple seconds, introduce a threshold of damage required, adjust gold gain, etc. These are just some ideas off the top of my head. I can see where you're coming from, though. To me, it reminds me of "Korean Backdashing" in Tekken, which is basically a complicated method of backdash cancelling in order to continuously backdash more quickly (b,b,db~b,n,b,db~b,n,b,db~b,n,b and so on as opposed to just b,b,b,b,b,b,b, etc.). It started off as an exploit all the way back in Tekken 1, but it has made its way all the way to Tekken 7. Yeah, it's more difficult than just backdashing and raises the skill ceiling, but does it actually add any necessary depth to the game when the developers could just allow you to backdash at the same pace normally?

holy duck these peoples replies are sad af. Anyway, i feel last hitting is pretty fun dude, its the easiest way to see whos more skilled between players. I cant imagine dota without last hitting. If you are having troubles last hitting or find it tedious, play the micro heroes. I think lycan and meepo are most easy to last hit with in a non tedious way. Although they come with a problem of learning to micro(which's difficulty is kinda overrated, its really not that hard when you get the hotkeys set).

For example I played wind ranger against sniper and he rekted me...He had lvl 10 I had 6 and I wasn't able to deny anything or even last hit because he can win trades in 1v1 with his support...what to do in this scenario?

Practice last hit training. It's a feature under tutorials in dota. And just play and focus on getting them. Eventually you'll get really good at it. Last hitting also depends on your hero so it just takes time.

my biggest problem is to last hit as ranged hero vs melee.. because melee will be always faster in denying than me in last hitting because he is closer :/

Well i play a lot of ranged heroes like wr and drow and usually when they go for the last hits i focus or harrass a little and when they back i last hit. It's all about trying to gain control of the creep wave so as a ranged hero you can have an advantage at that. Also really just practice as well as try and learn how to aggro the creep wave. Trust me it gets really easy. On wr i usually go two nulls and then i can out lasthit anyone.

Best Last Hit Training Option?

Posted by Faild0zer · in r/learndota2 · 3 years ago

Which Last-Hit Trainer do you all prefer or think provides the best applicable experience?

The last hit trainer from the learn tab doesnt let you buy items and there is no competition in the last hits so you can sit there and let a 1 hp no-aggro ranged creep help even equilibrium before killing it which you could never do in game.

The training polygon doesnt include any terrain changes for miss chance and the creeps walk right past the tower without aggroing it which makes denying them a hassle and unrealistic. If you turn on the sniper bot, you cant zone it and smack the deny down because it has unlimited range.

And the third choice ive been using is bot lobbies where i try to abuse the bot as best I can and end the game as fast as i can BUUUUT it's a bot.

What do you all find to be the most beneficial form of practicing for last hits?

Step1: Go last hit trainer to get familiar with hero atack animation. Get at least 75%. More is better but it depends on hero (some heroes have better base damage and easier to hit)

Step2: Create private lobby with cheats, no bots. Commends to use are -teleport and -stargame (just to start faster).

Get starting items for normal game - go lane You like to learn and take all last hits till 10 minute mark. There will be 80 creeps + catapults. Buy items on the go and deliver them by Courier. You can use abilities if You use them in normal game that way (WK crit for example). Aim for all the 80 creeps at 10 minute mark. Than close lobby and launch again. You will be amazed how hard is to hit 80 CS. Funny part is if You cant get 80CS not beeing harased so how can You get CS against oponents :-) So git gut.

Step3: Let's Play a game.

How yo last hit in Dota 2 ?

I am a 2k player, I am struggling on cs. Which is the best settings for last hitting: right click force attack (and continous right click) and stop (s) or classic a (attack)+ click?

Personal note : with right click force attack if I missclick the creep my hero goes off the position especially if she/he is a ranged hero... In the mid-lane this is so important i guess.

Thanks for your recommendations...

I do the first setting but I think either setting works. The main thing about last hitting is its a skill that can be trained. Training using the same hero again and again will help you understand your limits. Same for last hitting.

Another 2k player here. I use A stop. I have smart attack on so I only have to press A to attack the creep my mouse is hovering. I use A to turn my hero towards the creep. And then I press stop to animation cancel and then A to last hit. I can use this to feint and it’s great for ranged heroes.

Have you seen Bsj’s videos on last hitting? He explains it better than me. Also if you try bsj’s method and it doesn’t work, I wouldn’t give up on it too soon. I had trouble with this when I first started using it and it was because I was last hitting with clicks for years and had to unlearn it while also learning this. These days it’s still a work in progress but it feels more natural and def better than what I was doing before. I’ll link the video below. He starts talking about it around 6 minutes into the video.

Just a quick correction if someone is reading this comment without watching the video;

The setting you are describing is Quick Attack. Smart Attack is another setting that makes your hero attack the unit closest to your cursor, instead of the unit closest to your hero (default).

In any case, both are really great for last hitting purposes when you get used to them!

Also 2k MMR here and I feel you about it feeling so much slower at first. I was maining right-click heroes and felt like I constantly messed up LHs and hitting the enemy in “high-stress” situations. Now, a couple of months later, I don’t want to go back.

Getting used to a/s was especially helpful when starting to auto cast Clinkz’s W or Viper’s Q without having to toggle it on and off so I can harass without drawing aggro.

Stick to it, play a couple more unranked matches, you’ll get there (:

I’m using move and then attack. This allows you to position your self better specially if you want to harass the enemy hero or to avoid being harassed. I also use stop button specially if the hero has long wind up time like lina. I think there’s an option in game that when you click on the ground, you either attack the closes enemy on the place you clicked on or you attack the closes enemy to your hero. Maybe you can use this.

On a sidenote, if you play on windowed full screen mode, you can increase the brightness by 150%. It’s easier to see the creep’s HP bar this way.

It's not about the settings. It's about knowing how much damage you do to the minions and how much damage towers/your minions do to the other minions. It's literally just repetition by playing. If you want to improve fast, go into a custom game and practice csing.

It's a world of change for ranged heros. If you misclick a creep while right clicking your hero moves to that spot. But if you misclick while A clicking it will just attack the nearest enemy.

It does take some getting used to but it's invaluable for ranged hero positioning in lane.

So imo (4k player, so make of it what you will) the main advantages of a click vs rightclick for last hitting show up with quick attack move on. It makes pump faking attacks way easier, because it’s all left hand motion and it’s a lot easier to control your mouse precisely when you’re not spam clicking it. Plus, if this is an enemy creep, you can pump fake by just spamming a over and over, only one button needed. It does seem to make aggro easier as well, but I don’t think for a technical reason in game, rather splitting the mechanics accross both hands (right hand only does hover hero>move to where you wanna go>Rightclick) instead of having to click twice, which for me personally is significantly faster and stops me from walking towards the enemy too long.

The long story short is that last hitting is the most common mechanical skill required in dota, and like most mechanical skills the less buttons you need to press the more consistent it’ll be in the long run.

Ranged creep has a big value, so use spells if it'll be otherwise denied.

Some heroes have the spell-based lasthitting tactics to combine lasthits and harass, or maybe even diving with creeps after clearing enemy creeps. Necro, Lina, DK, Storm Spirit, Zeus, Lion, Pugna, etc. You often have to choose the strategy before even buying initial items: to go mana regen for spells or stats for damage.

1 upvotes on reddit
Schmarmin · 6 years ago

Let's say u are a Luna and you wouldn't be able to kill the creep with an auto attack. (for whatever reason... let's say enemy would otherwise deny it or something) In this case using Lucent Beam would be the right play. The mana you use for this is worth the gold you get out of a ranged creep.

EDIT: Other than this you can and should use your spells to harass the enemies in lane. One of the biggest mistakes you can probably make is having full mana in laning stage. :D

Pick a ranged hero, hold position, wait until the creep gets low, attack click to hit it and kill it, hold position again.

Once you can comfortably do that then you can start working on walking around in between last hits instead of just standing there.

Once you can do that then try picking up a melee hero and timing it so you walk up to the wave, get there just when it’s time to last hit, kill the creep, and then walk back.

Once you can do all of that then you can start working on doing pump-fakes and animation cancels between attacks.

Lastly note that you can practice on the last hit trainer even while queueing, so there’s no excuse not to.

When you refer to “hold position” are you using the Hold command or simply don’t move?

Whatever button lets you stand still and not start autoattacking. Depending on your particular autoattack settings “stop” might work or you might need something like “stop and hold position”, etc.. The idea is that your hero should be standing there, in range of the creep, without doing anything at all.

U need to watch the health and what creep is getting hit by the enemy range creep. Also don't wait afk for CS, cuz enemy will mess with ur last hit. Keep enemy busy while keeping an eye on creep health or aggro at last moment when creep is about to die so that u can get the cs easy.

You would go mantle of intelligence in that case. Always get the stat item that matches your hero stats. Starting with items that give you your primary stat also gives you damage and this allows you to more easily get last hits. Also important to have higher damage as the enemy can kill last hit their own creeps and deny you gold so you want to be able to last hit when they cant because your damage is higher. Note that this only applies to core heroes, if you are playing support you dont need to buy these items because you shouldn't be last hitting, getting farm isnt your job

I wonder what mechanic good players use to last hit. I used to last hit with right click + stop for timing. I recently saw a video from BSJ suggesting you should use attack button + stop to last hit and right click only to move in order to avoid miss clicks. I try to implement it but it does not feel powerfull for me yet. What do you think? Which way do you prefer?

I saw the BSJ video and tried to implement it, with a little practice it became natural, specially if you already use quickcast, which I do, just practice the little spamming a + d (or the key you use to stop) and it becomes automatic, I wouldn't say it's life-changing but I prefer it this way, the less mouse clicks, the better for me.
Edit: as someone else mentioned, denying and LH feels the same, so you can focus more on just the creeps health bars.

I just right click creeps. No A-click. Its all down to preference and practice, whatever feels more comfotable.

A-click does offer more accuracy, but it also requires some new muscle memory you gotta develop. If you think that's the way to go for you, it's worth it to give it a shot for a while. :)

Why does a clicking provide more accuracy? What is the difference between them really? Thanks in advance!

A-Click is pressing the 'A' key (or whatever key you have set for the attack command) then left-clicking on a unit to attack. Otherwise, you can just right click on an enemy unit to attack.

A-Clicking provides more accuracy because, like OP said, you can't 'misclick' and accidentally move your hero when you meant to attack a unit instead. When you A-Click, you must use left-click to specify a target, completely removing the opportunity to misclick by moving. :D

Does that make sense? No worries if it doesn't!

I A click because then it is identical to denying. It's more intuitive if it's the same

You can deny by rightclicking, too. You can enable this feature from the options.

I use A click but have it set to where the minute I hit A it attacks. I use my S key to stop.

So it basically goes something like A click with an immediate S command to stop actually attacking, but positioning my hero for an easy last hit. Then I can juke out my opponent by using the A and S keys and try to secure my last hits and denies.

Hi, pos 1 player here, and recently improve a lot in my cs, just add some mechanichs like quick and smart attack options, start to use attack/stop comand to position my hero properly to cs, and the results are insane, actually with a win streak of 9 games.

Wanna know if have more room to improve, and how you guys feel comfort to cs, hotkeys, commands..

Here my last game, with am, where I feel so good with my new cs technic.

One thing I tried doing was practicing with really low damage heroes, so pick like SF and don't buy any items or level his passive. Then just try last hitting in lane as you normally would. Hope this helps!

I improved a lot by taking noticed of the enemy range creep's target and learning the timing to attack when combined with my attack animation. Also you can start hitting your creeps once they pass under half HP, which is a great way to pull the lane back towards your tower if you start to push out a bit. Just hit them a time or two to get the enemy wave pushing yours slightly and boom, equilibrium restored.

I think the way you get really good at CSing is by playing mid a lot, good mid laners will outCS you even if you have a dmg advantage by smart usage of spells and working with creep aggro. Just play a lot of mid and eventually you'll probably get better at it

as a 3k pleb, this is true. switched from carry to mid couple months ago when i noticed my mids would feed often, then i became the feeding mid lmao. started playing a lot of invoker and although i struggle on him whenever i play anything else after i spammed the crap out fo him, I became a massive lane bully and now RARELY lose my lane unless hard countered. Also may be a weird statement and had read this somewhere after I noticed my laning phase had improved drastically but apparently invoker is an amazing hero to learn how to lane with because of his need to think ahead and plan every single thing you do ontop of how punished he gets for falling behind in the first 2 waves, which is when hes essentially an angry marshmallow

Why are final hits more important than damage done?

Posted by Big-Fold-8501 · in r/rivals · 2 months ago

Sort of a stupid question ig. I don't play any other competitive game, and I was just wondering why final hits are considered more important than overall damage done? Isn't damage done a good thing, because it often leads to an enemy being pushed back/away from point, or makes them easier to final hit.

Hmm I guess if someone has a lot of final hits atleast to me it shows me that person is probably engaging a lot fighting the enemy team. If someone has low last hits but a lot of damage done while that is still good it would also tell me that person has kinda just fed the enemy healers free ult charge by dealing a lot of damage but not executing kills along with it.

If someone has high damage and high final hits then you are John wick

I think it’s just team comp dependent. I play a lot of psylocke and don’t typically finish with the most damage, but usually have the most finals in a good win. In an ideal world if I’m paired with someone playing punisher or similar, they’ll pump out damage and I’ll pick off people they’re shooting at. But if I’m playing psylocke and we have a BP, I’ll try to farm ult and put on damage pressure to get support cooldowns for the BP, so I’ll have more damage and they’ll probably have more finals.

Your logic is flawed. Even if you charge your dps ults more and you’re still doing less final hits, you’re just super charging even more support ults. Final hits is the most important stat.

cranetrain95 · 2 months ago

Oh I’ve been waiting for a post like this! All stats are meaningless without context. Examples:

Final hits mean nothing if you died in a trade while over-pursuing kills every time with the lowest damage on the team as a dps. Means you left your team into a 5 v 6 because outside those kills that you were trading and probably got a solid ult or 2 you were a non factor while the other person you were trading probably brought some value.

Damage means nothing without more than a final hit or two or even minimal kills because you probably had horrible target priority and just farmed off the tank or spammed into a group just to misuse your ult while feeding the other team’s support ults.

Doesn’t matter if you led the game in healing numbers if all you did was pocket your tanks while letting your other healer and your dps peeling for you die. There is a time and place to heal bot and it’s not when your tanks are at 800 health behind cover. For god sakes look up at your fliers!

Congrats you led the game in damage blocked as you died in the double digits because all you know how to do is move forward and don’t how to use cover. “Ggs no heals” brother 3 support ults couldn’t keep you alive the way you soak up bullets.

Other stats provide extra context and value as well though. Alternatively:

High final hits, low damage blocked. With a middling death count you were probably pretty efficient in securing picks.

High damage, lots of kills participated in. Even a middling amount of final hits means prioritized targets well recognized where to provide pressure and set up kills for your teammates.

High heals, low tank deaths, and lots of assists means you probably kept your dps alive while providing enough heals to your frontline.

If blocked an insane amount of damage and had the lowest amount of deaths it means you pushed and held space appropriately. You probably peeled effectively and kept pressure off your team because if your healers are alive that means you are alive.

Feel free to add any extra inputs!

TL;DR: Context matters. One stat only shows one side of the story.

Any unspent resource towards the objectives is useless. Damage not killing but making people retreat to make your team cap or stall, is sometimes better than a secured kill in an unplayed area.

Most of the time it is right, but it is more complex. Spend your resources on the objectives or it can be useless hence sometimes the better stats don't always win. Because there are no stats on capping or denying cap.

ThatCuntJerry · 2 months ago

Additionally high damage abilities, like punisher turret and jonny’s flame prison can make space by forcing enemy tanks to retreat, and on some payload maps with strong defensive positions this is especially valuable.

While it’s a good rule of thumb, it’s more character dependent and nuanced than people may think.

Yeah not shooting tanks at all can be pretty bad too.

You need to farm ult as fast as possible, and you need to keep applying pressure even if you have no LoS on squishes.

Taking moderate damage should be the goal actually, if your healers can keep up, let them charge those ults!

It's so annoying when I'm a support and I get an enemy's health down to like 10, and then the rest of the team doesn't finish them off. And then they sneak away as I reload. Wasted opportunity.

6 upvotes on reddit
romxza · 2 months ago

But, (relative) low death count on a tank isn't always good. Maybe you were so low impact that the enemy didn't even look at you while the dps is doing all the heavy lifting, distractions, retaking point, burning enemy cooldowns, making space. As a tank it would be more efficient for the team if you did that instead, and it needs to be done, but you could be solo thor flanking playing like you were panther. You have to take other context into account. Did you win the match?

Final hits means you’re removing a player from the fight

That’s why it’s one of the most important stats. Sure I can do a lot of damage and respectively the enemy team can just keep people healed up and never die. That just means my team is probably gonna lose the fight if I can’t secure kills.

DOTA 2 Last hitting

Key Considerations for Last Hitting in Dota 2

  1. Understanding Damage: Familiarize yourself with your hero's base damage and attack animation. This helps you know how much damage you can deal to secure last hits.

  2. Timing: Practice the timing of your attacks. You want to hit the creep when its health is low enough for your attack to finish it off, but not too early.

  3. Creep Health Awareness: Keep an eye on the health of enemy creeps. Use the last hit sound cue and visual indicators to gauge when to strike.

  4. Positioning: Position yourself close to the enemy creeps but not too close to the enemy hero, as they may harass you. Use the lane's positioning to your advantage.

  5. Creep Equilibrium: Try to maintain creep equilibrium near your tower without letting it get too close. This makes it safer for you to farm and harder for the enemy to deny.

  6. Use Abilities Wisely: Some heroes have abilities that can help secure last hits. Use them strategically to ensure you get the gold without pushing the lane too much.

Practice Tips:

  • Practice Mode: Spend time in practice mode to work on your last hitting without the pressure of a real game.
  • Focus on CS: Aim for a specific number of last hits per minute (e.g., 50-60 by 10 minutes) to gauge your improvement.

Recommendation: Consider watching replays of high-level players or streamers to observe their last hitting techniques. This can provide insights into positioning and timing that you can apply to your own gameplay.
