Code geass.
amazing ending
It was decent but the ending it frustrating as hell in my opinion, like if Iron Man flew the missle into the portal and never came back, then everyone thanked Loki instead. That was the best example I could think of, but I hated it so much bro
ERASED
cmon man what’s the show namr
School Days
I have watched maybe 20 anime series, and for the first time I recently ran into a series that had no ending (One Outs), and it was so unsatisfying 😱
After consulting the community I learned that most anime series do not have endings, and they just sorta fizz out when the viewership numbers have fallen below a certain threshold. So...
As I love complete stories with satisfying endings like Death Note, Monster, Food Wars and Kaiji, I would like to hear...
Which anime series have the most satisfying endings? And... which anime have the most satisfying and "filler-free" journeys towards those endings?
86
Not really an "ending" though. Just a good stopping off point for the anime.
True.
But I kinda feel like if I don't watch the next season, this is a perfect point. They are first meeting/reunited and ready to go off on their next adventure. But really together this time. Has all the emotional beats of an ending at least.
Gurren Lagann
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Texhnolyze
Casshern Sins
Assassination Classroom
Fruits Basket (2019)
GunBuster
The Tatami Galaxy
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
Madoka Magica (there are 2 sequel films -- one of which is upcoming -- but the 12-episode show itself is a complete story)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Ashita no Joe
The Rose of Versailles
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
FLCL (original series)
Kill la Kill
Paranoia Agent
Romeo's Blue Skies
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Serial Experiments Lain
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Whilst in very much a minority opinion, the ending of FMAB really annoyed me lol [FMAB] >!Unless he got off at the next station or came back to Winry almost immediately.!<
Honestly there's a good few I'd argue with here. Evangelion is hardly satisfying.
In no particular order :
Ping Pong the Animation
Violet Evergarden
Monogatari Series
86
Katanagatari
Fruits Basket (2019)
Sakurada Reset
86 ending is peak anime
Violet Evergarden had a spectacular finish with the movie.
Guy loses everything. Definitely a satisfying ending....if you're a sadist.
evangelion such a fun and happy mech anime, real feel good show if you haven't seen it yet
Surprised no ones mentioned Mob Psycho 100
Yes that's the new version and it's completed now with 3 seasons (1st, 2nd, and The Final). You don't need to watch the one from 2001 unless you want to
I love any kind of ending that will make me cry or feel down through the rest of the week, so I'm looking for recommendations like this. I don't mind being spoiled because it doesn't ruin my experience, but the post is marked as spoiler for obvious reasons. If you want to give details, remember to cover it as well. Thanks in advance!
I don't mind if it's a recent or classic anime, how many episodes it has, or if it's a series with seasons, an ova or a movie. It just needs to fit the requirements of the title post ☺️
Devilman crybaby
Grave of the fireflies
Angel beats
Clannad
Death parade
Akame ga kill
Erased
Clannad has an unambiguously happy ending, no room for any other interpretation imo
Clannad movie not so much. People so heartbroken that the two series makes it happy.
Erased is definitely bittersweet. Many say it's sad or depressingly, but I think its bittersweet to even happy depending on interpretation
It actually reminds me of the movie the butterfly effect
code geass also fits this.
violet. evergarden
can top this
I mean... Violet Evergarden for me was a happy ending, something like anohana really broke me
cyberpunk edgerunners
one of my favorites, it's even better if you've played or know the context of the games.
Hard to top this one. I was hyped for days after finishing this one. Still get excited thinking about how good this one is. This will probably be the epitome of what you’re looking for.
Violet evergarden

Kyousougiga is full of all sorts of crazy and plot twists, not as serious as the ones you've listed here though
Dennou Coil has a bit more of a balance between serious and fun, and good if you like Scifi
My-Hime also if you're looking for something in a different genre to what you've listed but still building into a similar feel. Also I don't see Madoka Magica on your list, have you watched that?
pet aired recently and was very underwatched, so perhaps that if you're looking for shows strongly about the psyche of characters
You might also like Gankutsuou
Sounds like you'd enjoy Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei as well, similar intensity to what you've listed here and they make an unofficial spiritual trilogy with Lain
Dennou Coil is one of the most underwatched masterpieces in anime. It's a perfect blend of scifi, drama, and comedy. I'd rank it alongside Steins;Gate as top tier scifi.
Finally someone else who mentioned kyousogiga! Also the music slaps
Flip Flappers
Alien 9
Madoka Magica
Gakkou Gurashi-- GO IN BLIND. Look up nothing
Watched Gakkou Gurashi just as you suggested. Didn't look any plot nor any theme whatsoever. Enjoyed it so much and the thrill gets better as each episode has its own ups and downs. Cool anime series that reminded me of a certain Korean drama series hehe. Will definitely recommend this to others!
What's the genre on Gakkou?
Cute Girls Slice of Life
You will understand by the end of the first episode, and it's imperative that you watch the entire episode before deciding if it's for you or not.
Shinsekai Yori
Some of these aren't really underrated but:
Land Of The Lustrous
Baccano!!
Durarara!!
Casshern Sins
Dororo
Dorohedro
Shinsekai yori
Steins;Gate
Oddtaxi
Been wanting to watch this underrated anime. Thank you for this recommendation! Update: Just watched this and I'm definitely recommending this to my friends. Super epic ending! Not the type to leave you feeling heavy after watching it
for those who don't know circular endings are where an ending uses the same motif, words, idea, theme or setting as a beginning scene and mirrors it in a way. However the body of the story and the journey by the reader/viewer provides the emotional weight and when done well a circular ending not only provides a good sense of closure but can also put the growth of the characters or plot into a different perspective or leave you with something morally profound.
Without spoiling anything
two memorable circular endings that come to mind are Hyouka (my all time favorite anime ending) and The Devil is a Part-Timer! Which both feature a similar setting/theme/details as a scene from the beginning of their anime.
So yea I love a good circular ending and any recommendations would be appreciated, but note anything time travel is probably cheating ;)
Tatami Galaxy, or Yojohan Shinwa Taikei, is a show that executes this idea well, and in general, has one of the most masterful endings I've ever seen period in my 10+ years of watching anime. It's a little difficult to watch at first because of how unorthodox the narration is, but if you can stick with it, I guarantee it'll be an amazing experience for you.
(Also, props on appreciating the Hyouka ending.)
Recently Houseki no Kuni (super heavy spoilers!) and Yuru Camp had endings that mirrored the beginning.
Damn, seeing the ending versus the beginning of Houseki no Kuni is really just so crazy.
This is already old, but isn't Yuru Camp not a bad example / not even an example for what OP asked? It's only an in media res, which is not even a good example for that kind of narrative trick, since it doesn't have the effect that the first time and the second time are different for the viewer, a better recent example would be Hinamatsuri.
Houseki no Kuni has one of the best soundtracks in my opinion.
Steins gate comes to mind and it is also an overall enjoyable series
in my experience anything that has time travel and is any decent has some degree of circular ending, but I'd forgotten some of the details of Steins Gate ending scene that made it so satisfying until I re-watched it after reading this comment.
probably going to watch that the girl who leapt through time movie in the hope of something similar.
I gave Steins Gate a 9/10 on my first watch, but I put it up to a 10 after watching the first episode again.
The first time I saw it I didn't love it but after a second watch it was a 10 for me, and after playing the visual novel I can say that it would be apart impossible to have a better adaptation
Sakurasou no pet na kanojo (The pet girl of Sakurasou)
In my opinion one amongst the most enjoyable animes out there. It's not a masterpiece, but it's really good in my opinion.
For me it's a masterpiece. I don't usually give 10 on MAL, but sakurasou imo is one of the few that deserves it.
> Psycho-Pass
^FTFY
Questions:
#1 - did the author give up in the end? Like, for a romance it seems kind of crummy that only when kou and nazuna fell in love did nazuna have to leave forever (she was NOT gonna stop loving Kou)
(Btw I fking HATED that ending bro, like where did the plot get so unfair to the point where Kazuna had to accept her fate)
#2 - is there any q&a for after the ending? Like wtf happenned after they met up again????? Did they play a depressing game of tag or get back together?????
#3 - why did nazuna have to move to fking Antarctica when she could’ve just had kou live near capable people to protect him?
#4 - if nazunas problem was her desire for koi’s blood, then why did she move to Antarctica when she could’ve just satiated her thirst with blood bags from Kou? The ending clearly showed that she could’ve drink koi’s blood in a bag so whyyyyyyy..
Statements:
I have a gaping hole left in my heart after the ending. Idk bout you but it is so depressing that the first sign of love lead to a pre conclusion of eternal departure.
I swear the author was praying on the downfall of nazunas and koi’s relationship, bcus no way is it logical that there is a ONE YEAR TIMELIMIT. That dumb fking myth also pmo cus WTFF the second I read about the rule in chapter 100 smth I already knew the ending was gonna be cheeks.
Actually, this is one way to interprate this ending since it's an open one.
Personnally, when I finished the manga I was just like you but since I couldn't deal with the idea of a sad ending, I decided to analyze it and it's only after that, that I found a way to think they could still live together and that the author was suggesting it.
To sum up what I found and what I believe now about this ending, here are the most important thing :
The part with the kids is a full interpretation on my own so this is just my honest opinion. But for the rest, I tried to limit myself only to what was showed. And maybe I got carried away by the fact that I didn't want to believe in a sad future for them but I will definitely not envision it now.
May I help you to heal your heart.
Eeeeh, no one answered this so I'll do it with my humble interpretation. B) I'm not the biggest fan nor the one who has investigated the most for answers, but I really like reading stories from that point of view of "what would the character have done" or "because the author did this." I hope someone else complements my opinion.
No, I don't think the author gave up on the ending. I do think it was a bit rushed, but there are many explanations for this. It could be that he needed a break, and released a sequel (doubtful), it could be that he got tired of the manga publication deadlines and decided to finish quickly, or simply (and most likely) that was the ending he had for his story and that's how he wanted to represent it. Even so, I leave many doubts open, and the ending itself is open, so it is possible that at some point the ending will be extended or its universe expanded with a new story with different characters.
The thing about Nazuna going to Antarctica is logical because she loved Kou and I don't think any person in love would like to be close to said person without being able to really get close to talking to them. Antarctica was a perfect place to not see Kou and also not be tempted to go out looking for him. Also in these kinds of places the night lasts longer and there are fewer humans, so it was a win-win. And the blood thing happens after Kou meets Nazuna again, so probably the first time he left, that idea didn't occur to them. Maybe it occurred to Kou to give her blood that way after some event in those 3 years he spent looking for her (MAYBE Rakuen Hen has data like this).
The point is that the ending was actually good. Many interpret it as something sad or empty because it is too good a story and finishing it is sad. But they really stick together in the end, so you have to live with that. Furthermore, leaving so many doubts in the air gives a slight hope that this may not be the true end of the story. In several parts of the manga they make reference to the author's open endings, such as when Kou says that they hate open endings, or when Nazuna is reading a novel and asks Anko if it has a continuation, and Anko answers yes. Maybe in the future these protagonists will return. Maybe in the anime. There are many stories whose universes expand when animated. This is what happened with Evangelion, and the release of the movies 1.0, 2.0, etc., which added totally new and refreshing, and canonical stories.
What anime/s do you guys believe has the most satisfying ending ever? If overall, I'd say mine is Code Geass, although its a bit sad, the ending is still the best and the most satisfying I've ever watched. But as for romance, theres quite a lot, but I'd say Saekano's ending has satisfied me the most.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood probably has the most satisfying ending for me.
Some other favorite endings of mine are Ashita no Joe and Monster.
While Monster is one of my favourites and I agree that the ending is great, it has its cryptic elements. Still, it perfectly goes with OP's request.
Yeah, I get why people wouldn't like Tenma's decision or how it's open-ended, but I personally love it. It just really fits the themes of the show.
There's no such thing as a painless lesson-they just don't exist. Sacrifices are necessary. You can't gain anything without losing something first. Although if you can endure that pain and walk away from it, you'll find that you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle. Yeah... a heart made Fullmetal.
Steins Gate ending was so satisfying. The 2018 season was the cherry on top.
Saber Marionette (both J and J to X)
Assassination Classroom
Rebuild of Evangelion. Get over the childish cartoons and go to the real world with big boob lady
Exactly
Tsuki ga kirei
Possibly controversial, but I think End of Evangelion is a beautiful, exciting and haunting, if depressing end to the series
EoE is one of the best endings in any medium for me. I know a lot of people hate on the original NGE ending but EoE seems to be mostly well-received, especially by Eva fandom from what I’ve seen.
I'm told EoE was somewhat controversial, hence why I wasn't sure whether to put this here. I do agree with people that the original NGE ending is terrible though. EoE is what makes it worth it for me.
I had pretty mixed opinions on the show throughout, but EoE single-handedly cemented it as possibly one of my favourites. I'm a sucker for a good ending
I really enjoyed End of Eva, but the series ending is my personal canon. As a spectacle, EoE for days (having a budget, what a concept) but I prefer the positive and hopeful ending of the series to the cynical and bleak alternate ending of EoE.
I'm pretty sure both are canon. The ending of Eva happens right before the final scene of EoE
Mob Psycho 100
I watched MP100 last year. When I finished S3 I immediately thought "there's no more, right?".
The show ended so perfectly that I didn't want there to be more, despite how much I liked it.
Code Geass
The perfect ending if I have ever seen one
Indeed. I usually don't like the protagonist dying but this one's an exception.
Assassination Classroom 😭😭
Princess mononoke
darling in the franxx
Fax my brother. A lot of people hated the ending but I actually liked how bittersweet it was. Really tugs at the heart strings
Top three off the top of my head: Code Geass, Assassination Classroom & Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
What's the sad part of FMAB's ending? (Besides not having any more episodes to see)
Hoenheims death
then, they ruined it with Lelouch of the resurrection. What a way to milk the show 😒😒😒
Different universe.
Main series Lelouch is in C's world with Euphy, Shirley and Rolo
Omfg I cried my ass off worst I was cursing when ppl cheered when he died I was like stop celebrating!!!
You fucker, spoiled me
Spirited Away if you count movies.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.
Clannad After Story
This question was spurred on my mind after a recent post made me look back at some old discussion on Attack on Titan's ending, about pretending that the story had ended when the rumbling begun or after the basement reveal, at the ocean scene.
But at the end of the day, no matter how much I dislike the actual ending, I can't honestly say these would have been good endings either as they are. Too much still left to explore, too much still left incomplete. And more importantly, no matter how much I disagree with them there are plenty enough of people who are fine enough with the ending or that even outright like it, so I can't say there was no merit to the series continuing either.
So enter the question, is there any series with an earlier point that could had truly served as a good ending, and with an actual finale SO utterly horrible or disgusting most everyone can collectively agree we should pretend the series ended at that earlier point and try our best to forget the canonical ending? I only really arrived at one answer I can shoot with 0 reservations whatsoever
Enter Usagi Drop.
The manga is about Daikichi a regular japanese 30 years old dude that goes back home to his grandfather's funeral, only to learn that grandpa has managed to get a lover pregnant at his ripe old age, a now 6 years old daughter named Rin that he kept a secret from the family, and that now with him dead and the mother nowhere to be seen is by all means an orphan.
And over nobody wanting to take her in and talks about sending her to an orphanage raising, Daikichi steps up and takes her home himself, eventually turning into him raising her until adulthood.
So that's what the series is about, right? Daikichi struggling with suddenly becoming a parent and needing to raise her. From dealing with all normal issues from sickness to school, to not having as much time for himself and his dynamics with work changing, to all the extra baggage Rin had over having lost her only parent that young and having such an unusual family structure, to navigating complicated relationships like with the rest of the family that didn't take her in and the girl's mother, and even a little bit of that trashy manga romance with the single mother of Rin's now best friend
What was done really well mind you, down to even the characters that had no businesses being that compelling like the biological mother turning out quite well handled, and the story ends with Daikichi finally being able to tell himself that he's happy like that, and that raising that child isn't a sacrifice anymore. Every plotline pretty much solved, and a bright future ahead.
.... That would be a better timeline than the one we live in. And instead that's only the first half of the story, next chapter picking up after a time skip in which now Rin is almost an adult dealing with high school drama like a love triangle with that childhood friend or needing to pick a future or bulliying.
Okay, that's not what people signed up for when they began to read this manga, but it doesn't sound THAT bad, right?
Well then shit actually hits the fan, and from a certain point onwards the story begins to build up to the main attraction being Rin putting it in her head that she's in love with Daikichi. No, not "I love dad!" love, but "I want to marry him and for him to put a child in me" love. Yeah. Is this some Oedipus situation to explore a messed up dynamic? A reasonable person would think so, especially since when push comes to shove Daikichi does reject her on the grounds of "I literally raised you since you were a toddler", but the author had other plans. And instead we begin to pretend that them getting together would be the happy ever after, and begin to explore Rin coping with that, everything preventing that outcome being removed, literally every other character who learns about it fully supporting the idea, and Daikichi kind of just melting into it little by little
Yes, exactly as it sounds. Her childhood friend love interest? Dude has the "If she won't be with me then he's the only guy I want her to be with!" speech ready and raring to go, hell he's the one to break the ice and tell the guy his daughter wants to bone him in the first place
The boy's mom, Daikichi's old love interest? Suddenly decided things between them can't work out and stars seeing another rando to open up the path for him. Then vanishes in thin air to very conveniently get remarried off screen
Rin's biological mother? "Slay bitch! I regret a bunch of things so if that's what you want go grab him by the balls before you miss your chance!"... And also hits us with the reveal that, since Rin didn't care about the adopted father incest angle already, she dosn't need to worry about biological one either since Grampa isn't actually her biological father! Hurray!
The mother's boyfriend? Also on board with the ship and giving cool speeches over it... For some reason
Daikichi's parents? No objections
On and on and until long bad trip short, we end the story proper with them engaged and Rin telling him she can't wait for them to have a child so they can raise them like he raised her.
...
...
Yeah, point being, "Actually compeling story about dude raiseing adopted daughter turns into the world unanimously decided they should bone each other the instant she reaches adulthood" is the only case where I really believe quite literally everyone that read this (except the author I guess) probably agrees the manga should have ended earlier, and that we should mind wipe the canonical ending away from our minds.
Hell even the anime and the live action seem agree considering they both ended before the time skip and refused to continue and cross that bridge despite not having fluked as far as I can tell
Would love to hear about any other such ideas
Honestly? Arcane.
If I could erase season 2 from my memory and pretend that the show had ended on the first season's beautiful cliffhanger, I'd do that.
I mean, Arcane was setting stuff up that ending it on season 1 would have been very unsatisfying, but yeah, the payoff sucks and is super rushed.
Tbh, I've never really understood why Arcane season 1 was so highly rated when so much of it was such blatant setup. Don't get me wrong, it's really good, but I don't know why people were so eager to give it credit for so much when it was introducing plot hooks twice as fast as it could wrap them up.
I feel like some core storylines really hit, like pretty much everything involving Silco, but a lot of them were basically running on fumes while new things kicked up around them, like the fact that the only uninterrupted interaction between Jinx and Vi was literally the last scene of the season. It was obviously the kind of thing where the followup would be make or break, so I was always nervous about it's future.
After rewatching season 1 and letting the hype die down
I must give s2 a 7 at best .
Its truly feels like 3 seasons cramp into one and even then it didn't manage its time right..we went from "" relationship between the city's are in an all time high " to "lets fight magic robots" in a episode
Fucking sucks
Also side rent: Vi sucks in S2 . She is a non character.
I’m pretty sure they did cram 3 seasons into 1. Apparently despite the first seasons popularity it didn’t translate into any real money being made in game. I’m betting the people making the show saw funding for the future suddenly become a lot more nebulous.
Honestly if you told me the ending, without telling me it's a Slice Of Life, I'd assume it was some kind of fetish H-anime.
Dear God the dragon prince fell off so hard after season 3 I kinda want it to retroactively be cancelled. Shit they apparently didn't resolve everything after season 7 and now want to do another set. At this point I don't think it deserves to have a full conclusion with how the story has been handled.
I didn't even watch Season 4 because of the trope of "they broke up between seasons"... but there are 7 SEASONS?????
Gosh and golly I'm glad I jumped off this train when I had the chance.
Rarely have I seen a series take way too long to get the story rolling, while simultaneously speeding through every relevant plot, character or world building aspect.
Its like at every point they decided to spend an absurd amount of time on the things that didn't matter, then realised they had no time to actually focus on the plot.
Yamai's introduction should have been where they ditch it. But instead she's in because they have to fill the quota.
What are you talking about? Usagi Drop never had a second part! It ended when Rin was a child silly... yes sir
Komi can't comunicate should have ended after the confession mainly because Year 3 is just that disappointing. Kawai arc is the worst written arc in the series. Manbagi get seperated from the group and get a participation trophy. The whole 100 friends stuff just doesn't help since most of the cast never get developement beyond their debut chapter so for me I forget them. I don't remember the whole thing between Shina and Komi get a conclusion. Looking back the 100 friends goal hurt more than help the series.
